Hawaiian Shirts, wasps, and the wet chair
2008-07-19 12:23:00
Our trip to Hawaii being one of the few bright spots in an otherwise downbeat year, I have taken to wearing Hawaiian shirts as my summer default. They're comfortable, longer than most other shirts, and distinctly non-academic.But yesterday when I went out to supervise the kids in the backyard, I found myself surrounded by wasps the moment I plunked myself down in the patio chair. After several minutes of coping with hysterical kids screaming "wasps! wasps!" I got them to calm down by pointing out that the wasps were not following them, but sticking pretty close to me. "It's your shirt," Tigana suggested. "They think those are real flowers!"At about the same time I realized the chair I was sitting in had just been through one of the several freakish hail storms that have been plaguing our region, and the seat cushion was soaked through. Dripping from my now soaked pants, I retreated with the kinds back into the house to change clothes, leaving the wasps behind. The next evening, t...
Wasps Reveal Clues about the Evolution of Intelligence
2008-05-30 15:34:00
From Scientific American: Experts have long suspected that complex social interaction drove the evolution of large brains in humans. Now a study in wasps supports and refines that theory: it seems that dominant individuals have larger brain regions responsible for higher-order cogn

2008-05-08 18:47:00
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Orchids that mimic female wasps may not only waste the time of the male wasps they lure into spreading their pollen -- they also seduce them into wasting valuable sperm, Australian researchers reported on Wednesday.

The London Wasps continue their drive to the Guinness Premiership playoffs as they stomped Worcester today 49-12 at Adams Park. I expected the Wasps to win rather easily today and clearly that was the case as the men in black & yellow crossed the try line 7 times. Mark Van Gisbergen came off the bench to ...

2008-02-24 01:43:00
The London Wasps defeated Bristol 32-30 this afternoon at Adams Park. Bristol had the lead until the 80th minute, when Mark McMillan scored the game winning try with no time remaining. I had to follow this via match cast, but from what I could tell, this was a fantastic match.  I honestly feel the Wasps ...

Wasps ground Qantas flights
2008-02-07 15:30:00
A wasp plague has prevented three Qantas flights from taking off properly at the airport of Brisbane in Australia. This has become clear from a security report. The insects had made nests in parts of the Airbus A330-fleet of Qantas, as a result of which they disturbed the flight equipment. In one of the cases a plane had to make a stop while already taking off. This caused the brakes to overheat the tires, which in turn caused six out of eight tires to blow up. The airplane remained stranded on the tarmac. The pilot was forced to start the braking procedure while already traveling at a speed of 226 kph. In turn the brakes reached a temperature of 685 degrees. Since the incidents Qantas implemented a weekly wasp nest checkup on their fleet. read more here
Wasps to wreck Munster?s Buzz
2008-01-18 10:48:00
The bet of the weekend has to be Wasps at 6/4 to beat Munster. Wasps are the best team in the competition so far and on paper they are without a doubt better than Munster who’s pack doesn’t look to be as strong as it once was. Simon Shaw and George Skivington will eat O’Driscoll and O’Callaghan ...
Gigantic Nestball where 5,000 wasps Lived
2007-12-06 09:30:00
In the attic, something was stirring. All through summer, uninvited and unseen, the visitors congregated in the roof space at Ray and Daphne Jacobs's house. It wasn't until Mr Jacobs opened the loft hatch to service his heating boiler that the extent of the invasion emerged. The wasp factory: Daphne Jacobs with the gigantic nestball where 5,000 wasps lived"The wasps came out like snow," the 75-year-old retired carpenter, from Woodbridge, Suffolk, said yesterday."We couldn't believe it."The nest he discovered attached to two rafters weighed more than 4lbs."We're country folk and used to nests but never have we seen anything this big."The council expert they called in to help remove it estimated there had probably been 5,000 of the insects colonising the attic."It filled me with horror," said Mrs Jacobs, 74 (pictured), who is keeping the nest as a souvenir.
Leinster v Leicester and Wasps v Munster

Leinster v Leicester Preview This is an absolutely massive game to come up so early in the competition. Afghanistan’s Wasps and Rocks Want to Kill You
2007-09-26 05:36:00
September 26, 2007. Both of these videos from Afghanistan are amazing. After watching these you will come to fear Afghanistan’s natural hazards. First up, just when the Germans thought it was safe to go driving in the mountains of Northern Afghanistan…. And is it just me or do Afghanistan’s wasps weigh 1 kilogram each? Nature-wise, this place is almost as dangerous as British Columbia.

Joke Come True: Wasps in Cookies...
2007-09-09 06:53:00
You know, ever since I was a little kid, if I saw a fly land in someone's soup, or on a friend or family member's sandwich, I'd joke, "hey, a little extra protein, no charge"...I seldom got more than grimaces in return.Well, it seems I - and who knows how many others - may have been on to something. Take a look that videoclip below - wasp cookies are catching on in Japan!Apparently, wasp has been an ingredient in some rice preparations in Japan for a long time, so making cookies with the insects didn't seem like that big a leap. And - tada! - the wasp cookies are being touted for their protein content...But my tongue is probably barbed enough ... I expect I'll be sticking to sushi for my exotic protein...listen to Light On Light Through podcast also iTunes Paul Levinson's books

Tracking Wasps With RFID Tags
2007-01-30 18:50:04
We mentioned about the invisible (chipless) RFID ink, from Somark Innovations, being tested on cattle. What now? Information about the behavior of several wasps can now be aggregated, thanks to those small RFID tags fitted by the Zoological Society of London (ZSL). Movements of these wasps are monitored in real-time by sensors affixed at ...
