Watching my first marathon
2009-10-16 03:52:00 I had never been to watch the marathoners run the annual Chicago Marathon. This year I decided to head out and support my friend Catherine and the rest of the runners. I woke up on Sunday morning and waited for a friend to pick me up. Unfortunately, we didn't plan very well, because the streets were blocked and they could not get to me to pick me up. So I hopped in a cab and bypassed all the traffic. I was not going to miss seeing my friend Catherine. Catherine had set this goal to run the marathon months ago. She began training with the National Aids Marathon Training Group and raised money to support the...

What You Won’t Learn By Watching TV
2009-09-17 09:02:00 Warning: Mortgage Rambling Ahead. From the Inbox: Hello, I working with a reporter at <Insert National TV/Media Company Here> tomorrow on a story that is essentially a consumer’s guide to finding the lowest possible mortgage rates with a focus on the difference in rates between smaller community banks and the larger banks. Why are smaller banks often able to offer lower rates and is there any tradeoff between going with a smaller bank vs a larger one? We have some theories – mainly that community banks have less overhead and are therefore are likely willing to take a lower margin but just wanted to get some other opinions. Boy, did she just open up a can of worms there. In plain English: How do consumers get the best deal on a mortgage? My reply: In the mortgage business, you have mortgage brokers, mortgage bankers and federally chartered banks. Mortgage brokers are just that — they don’t loan their own money, they just broker the deals out. Mortgage banks len...
MarketWatch: Watching the charts
2009-09-17 06:00:00 "The third quarter ends in just a few weeks, and the market landscape is strikingly different today than when it started," says Michael Ashbaugh. In his top-notch The MarketWatch Technical Indicator, the advisor offers a technical assessment for the market averages as well as for a trio of global wireless stocks that now appear on his radar watch list."The major U.S. benchmarks are consistently pressing the year's best levels, with the S&P and the Nasdaq clearing major resistance."After breaking slightly higher last week, the S&P has thus far held the August peak as support. Its steep rally from the September low is constructive, improving the chances of further gains."Consider that each major U.S. benchmark has notched the following quarter-to-date performance: The Dow has rallied 1,126 points, or 13.2%, after finishing the second quarter at 8,500.The Nasdaq has gained 317 points, or 17.9%, after endin...

Watching the President?s Speech
2009-09-10 02:57:00 I had not intended to watch it, but switched on FoxNews at about 5:40 and was surprised that he was still in the middle of it. And he’s still going. Is Big Bro Watching You?
2009-08-06 19:16:00 George Orwell's novel 1984 did a good job of scaring a lot of us when it was required high school reading in 1950s. A main character was "Big Brother," who kept everyone in the county of Oceania under total surveillance by watching you, wherever you were, though the ubiquitous "telescreens." Thus came the popularized phrase, "Big Brother is Watching You."The popularity of the expression and the book played on the ingrained American distrust of government intrusion. Thus, the popular outrage in the 1970s about the Army and the Chicago Police Department's Red Squad spying on the radical (and sometimes violent) left. So, it is understandable that some Americans (this time on the right) are fuming ...

Watching those highs
2009-05-20 13:42:00 The retracement i was looking for appeared and it was in the strongest of fashion. Most of the stocks are rebounding off their 38.2% Fibo level. I learnt that this level is most useful in very strong price movement. Bingo! 3 weeks ago the rally is considered strong.... with that 38.2% supported... hence it may suggest that this rally can continue. My plan was to sapu stock at the retracement and watch if we breaks previous high as an indication of strength. I checked around, there are many stocks breaking their previous highs. Something that is positive in my opinion. Next to observe would be if there are bearish divergences around. There are still many stocks which i can go long technically. But i always prefered to trade high liquidity stock. Like UOB-KayHian has a buy signal, but due to the low volume, i will still give it a miss. Following sectors is one big advantage i learnt along the years. To make big or small money depends on the position sizing.I been monitorin...

2009-05-03 15:27:00 With May 1 arriving this week, Sweetie began her annual selection of a new swimsuit, an event that prompted me to ask her "What happened to that one that you had, the New York/Statue of Liberty themed swimsuit?"What happened to it, apparently, happened seven or eight years ago, which is how long it's been since Sweetie wore that suit. She gets a new one every year, as she told me last week, and getting that new one is a long, arduous process involving at least two or three trips to the store, wandering through the swimsuit section, picking out three or four swimsuits, buying them, taking them home, deciding she doesn't like those, and restarting the whole process.Because I am sympathetic to Sweetie, and because I have a great deal of interest in seeing her in a swimsuit, I have taken it upon myself this morning to help her cut that process short and get all the bathing suits she could want just by pointing and clicking. See, I've been looking at AmiClubWear, "the positive place ...

Watching CAPRICA? Watch This First!
2009-04-22 02:19:00 For the love of the Gods, before you press play on that just purchased copy of CAPRICA, why not take a moment to ensure the series gets off on the right foot by joining executive producers David Eick and Ronald D. Moore in a pre-screening libation, a tradition that goes back to the first initial bow of the BATTLESTAR GALACTICA mini-series. “We were very careful in those days to do it in private because we had a lot of dignity and a lot of self-respect,” revealed Eick mere moments before the curtain fell on CAPRICA at last night’s Paley Festival event honoring both BSG and CAPRICA. “But that’s all changed now.” So with that in mind, grab your shot of tequila (or for our underage readers, may we responsibly suggest a shot of milk… we hear it does a body good!), press play on the video above, and toast CAPRICA on what will hopefully be the start of a beautiful four, five or fifty-eight season relationship. So say we all.

When reporters approached him after his session, Zambrano said he was not speaking in either English, Spanish or Japanese. So how did the session go? "Hold on," Zambrano said before bending down to tie his shoes. He then got up from his stool and stalked off to the kitchen. "I'll be back in four hours," he said. When the clubhouse opened four hours later, Zambrano was gone. And Marmol appears to be staying in camp: Carlos Marmol postponed until Sunday his decision on whether to play for the Dominican Republic in the WBC. Marmol wanted to talk to Dominican manager Felipe Alou before deciding, though it looks like he's going to send his regrets. "It's hard to say no to your country," Marmol said. Tonight’s TV Addictions (Assuming You’re Not Watching the Super Bowl)
2009-02-01 15:14:00 Yes, yes, we all know the Superbowl is on. And unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know that directly afterwards comes the supersized episode of THE OFFICE, which has been so hyped we’re almost afraid it’ll disappoint. But what else is on tonight? Seeing as the other networks have opted against airing test patterns or the Yule Log, here are a few options for you. CBS REPORTS: THE ROAD TO THE WHITE HOUSE (7PM CBS) Figuring “if you can’t beat them, bore them”, CBS offers up an hour long report on the — say it with me — historic journey of Barack Obama. Frankly, we’d rather see the full, unedited Sarah Palin interviews. I mean, at least then there’s be some laughs. Â FORBIDDEN LOVE: POLYGAMY (7PM The Learning Channel) Can’t get enough BIG LOVE? Then this is the place to be. First, at 7, a look inside a polygamist sect (think Juniper Creek), and then, at 8 p.m., TLC presents MY HUSBAND’S THREE WIVES. That&r...

Weekday Online Vid Watching Trumps Weekends: Nielsen
2008-12-17 17:49:00 Nielsen released new online video facts and figures today, among them the top video sites for October, corrected figures from September, and data that shows more people watch online video during the week than on the weekends. The number of unique online video viewers fell 3 percent to just shy of 121 million in October from 124 million in September. However, the total number of streams grew 1 percent to 8.894 million, streams per viewer rose 4 percent to 73.7, and the time spent per viewer surged 10 percent — to almost 172 minutes — during that same time frame. Hulu ranks third in Nielsen’s top online brands by video streams, with more than 206 million streams and 9 million unique viewers. Unlike comScore (which had Hulu at sixth), Nielsen is separating out Viacom sites by brand (i.e. Nickelodeon and MTV). As noted above, Nielsen said that it updated its original September stats to account for a change in methodology and the removal of video advertising streams from...
Manifestation – Watching The Magic Unfold
2008-12-13 00:25:00 In a previous post on Manifestation and the creative process I spoke about how the law of attraction can be positive or negative depending on your out look and how you can easily turn a negative into a positive as soon as you change your thinking and actions. Today I want to discuss the beauty and joy of the creative process. If you follow the advice in This Article at some point you will find the Missing Ingredient to manifesting your desires and if you have already reached that point then you will definitely appreciate what I want to discuss today. When it comes to the magic of the creative process, time and time again you come across people who say that they have proof that the Law of Attraction does not work. They will give you a long list of the things that they have tried to manifest and an even longer list of strategies that they have tried, all to no avail. What these folks usually do not mention is all the things that they were doing that diverted their desires from reaching...

Giants Watching Arbitration Closely
2008-12-02 00:56:00 Monday, December 1st at 9 pm pacific marks the deadline for teams to offer their free agents arbitration. There was already word out of Detroit early in the day that the Tigers would not be offering Edgar Renteria arbitration, meaning any team could sign him without forfeiting one of their top draft picks. This move comes as a surprise to few as the Tigers bought Renteria out of his contract last month and it was pretty clear that his time in Detroit was over. Now the speculation should start flying again as the Giants have supposedly already been exchanging contract proposals with the 33 year-old shortstop. The team is still expected to be in on Rafael Furcal, but as I stated in my last post, those chances seem to be dwindling by the day and now that Renteria is officially "free" coupled with the fact that Sabean likes to strike quickly could mean that Renteria has moved onto the top of the Giants wish list of shortstops. I'm still not at all sold on Renteria and I still would ra...

TV-Watching Rises to All-Time High
2008-11-25 22:05:00 Source: MarketingVoxUS use of TV, the internet and mobile ? the so-called "three screens" ? continues to increase across the board. In each month during Q3 2008, the average American watched approximately 142 hours of TV, viewed three hours of mobile video, and went online for 27 hours, according to research from The Nielsen Company, reports MarketingCharts. The "A2/M2 Three Screen Report," which details key findings from the research, also states that the average time a US home used a TV set during the 2007-08 TV season was 8 hours and 18 minutes per day, a record high since Nielsen started measuring television in the 1950s. With regard to specific age groups, users age 65+ watch the most TV each month, while those age 35-44 use the internet most. Watching Over
2008-10-27 15:03:00 This appeared fairly recently along Ponce De Leon, by the old railroad bridge and looking down upon the street. I'm guessing (not much of a stretch) that it's from Paris on Ponce, the sort of funky/oddball antique shop just a little ways up -- it's behind PoP and probably on its property, and it has the same folk art feel as some of the other pieces (see ape on Eiffel Tower, here) on the store's grounds.I'm not sure what it's supposed to represent -- there's a vaguely religious feel to it and my first thought was that it's a representation of Mary, but I think that's wrong -- the figure is protecting two children, and neither of them seem very Jesus-ish, though I'm not sure how you'd tell. In any case, it's pretty striking and a cool addition to the area. This is what the figure's watching over -- a small stretch of the street that's forgotten and rather trashed, despite being between two heavily-trafficked areas (the Borders/Whole Foods/Home Depot complex on the ground...
Real Housewives of Atlanta: Are Ya'll Watching?
2008-10-23 20:11:00 I just started watching this, as I've seen a couple episodes so far. Nene has to be my favorite right now because she's wonderfully ghetto, and that's always fun to watch, but all these women are just so fabulously tacky, always talking about their status, and their money and whatnot. It's just so over the top you can't look away! I watched "Orange County" I didn't watch "New York", but I think these Atlanta women probably has them all beat. Are ya'll watching? I wanna know what ya'll think.

Media Expectations Won?t Matter Much to Most Voters Watching Debates
