Watching Jon Stewart should be required to vote
2012-01-25 16:38:00 Did anyone catch Jon Stewart last night? He perfectly captures the hypocrisy of Republican politicians. It’s not that it matters that Newt Gingrich was a sleaze to his wives per se. Playboyitis is an equal opportunity affliction when it comes to politicians. See also: Bill Clinton and the spectacle of Weinergate. The problem is when... Read more »

Dance Like No One?s Watching? In A Laundromat [Video]
2011-12-15 21:14:00 You know the saying, dance like no one’s watching. Well, it’s being done in this video, in a busy laundromat and the funny this is, at first, no one is paying any attention. Eventually, there are some people staring, wondering what the hell is going on. And then, well… just watch the video. The dancer ...

Drafting A China Manufacturing Agreement. Watching The Sausage Get Made. Pa
2011-12-15 08:58:00 Yesterday, I did a post, entitled, "Drafting A China Manufacturing Agreement. Watching The Sausage Get Made," seting out many of the questions we typically ask our clients before we begin drafting their OEM agreements. A reader, Phil, left us the following comment to that post: Can I ask about the wording of your agreements in Chinese? A deal I'm involved with has been running into a lot of trouble because the American law firm who wrote our contracts have written them in highly complex legalese, very different to the language of Chinese law and standard Chinese contracts. In the third tier city where we are trying to operate, our partner and potential collaborators are having real trouble just reading and understanding the documents. (I'm a translator, and I'm reasonably sure that both sides are right on this - the contracts are correct, but they really are very difficult to read.) How does your firm walk the line between the conventions of English (American) lega...

Drafting A China Manufacturing Agreement. Watching The Sausage Get Made.
2011-12-13 21:08:00 I love it when a blog post just lands in my lap, and one just did. It is a couple of emails from two of my firm's lawyers to two different clients, both of whom recently retained us to draft OEM Agreements for production of product by factories in China. Both clients are in the process of changing their Chinese manufacturers and this time around they want a strong and enforceable supplier agreement with their new Chinese manufacturer. I am doing this post to give an idea of some of what should go into a Chinese manufacturing agreement. Since we have a fairly standard initial questionnaire we send to our clients when we being working on China OEM manufacturing agreements, I have combined the two emails into one, further camouflaging the companies involved. Here are the questions posed by the emails: What is the name and contact information of the Chinese manufacturer? What sort of products will the Chinese manufacturer be making? Do you anticipate that these products will change...

Nov. 14, 1666: Watching a Transfusion, and Taking Notes
2011-11-14 20:02:00 From Wired Top Stories: 1666: Samuel Pepys, writing in his famous diary, records the first description of a blood transfusion. Canada's best seaside golf, whale-watching...and a haunted hotel?
2011-07-15 17:15:00 Distance in Canada is gauged by kilometers, not miles, and time, as opposed to range, is used as description in order to make travel appear more palatable. Although most of the world is accustomed to a metric way of life, as an American, I was a bit flustered! Jeff, our host and golf partner for the first leg of the trip, thought nothing of the two-and-a-half-hour drive from Fredericton, New Brunswick, to Moncton as he was born and raised in the Maritimes but I must admit that I was relieved to finally arrive in the French community of Dieppe in order to play Fox Creek Golf Club. I could see why we were brought to Fox Creek: this challenging championship-caliber golf course has been host to Prime Ministers, hockey legends and PGA golfers and now we were to experience its splendorous beauty and pristine conditions. Fox Creek and Kingswood Golf Club were designed by Graham Cooke. Both are very well maintained with commendable practice facilities as well as a number of...

Who's Watching As White House Collects Emails (For Illegal Campaigning
2011-06-05 19:14:00 -By Warner Todd Huston The Official White House website has a questionable new addition. When you land on the White House main page a notice fills your screen asking you kindly if you'd like to supply them with your email address so that they can send you "periodic updates from President Obama and other administration officials." Well, isn't that nice? Why, you can give Obama your email address and he'll send you his "updates." Gosh. Just before an election, too. Now, I wonder: just where will all those email addresses go? After all, it is illegal to use official government apparatuses for political campaigning, isn't it?...

The Whole World is Watching
2011-05-03 08:00:00 A man can die but once.  --King Henry IV, Part II, Act III -- William Shakespeare This is the blog title that I planned to use to write about the May 4, 1886 Haymarket Square Riot in Chicago.  About its 125th anniversary reenactment.  About the rededication of its statue in Waldheim Cemetery in Forest Park.  About its relevance today, specifically to the unions' reemergence in 2011.  About Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan government union workers' protests. About the whole world watching. Instead, I am writing about Osama bin Laden's death. And the whole world did watch ... kind of....
Who's watching you?
2011-04-19 17:24:00 Each day we move deeper and deeper into technology and with that progression we have opened ourselves up to living lives that are not so private anymore. This upsets me and I feel that we as citizens of the US have unknowningly signed away our privacy for the sake of being open to technology.

They Are Watching You!
2011-02-08 19:04:00 Ever feel like you're being watched? You are. In today's society there are cameras virtually everywhere. However, if you look around, you might also feel as though inanimate objects are also watching you. Seeing these little faces everywhere is not paranoia, it's actually called anthropomorphism. No need to call your shrink just yet, as humans we constantly assign human characteristics to non-human things. Here are 28 non-human faces found in everyday life.

Illinois opens season tonight, good luck watching it
2010-11-08 17:37:00 Illinois opens the season tonight with a game against UC Irvine. Yes, this is the same UC Irvine team that lost to Concordia University in its exhibition game. Let's just say that I'm not expecting much from the Anteaters in this game, but I am happy that basketball is back. Now here's the tricky part. In order to watch Illinois basketball you have to have ESPN3. Also, if you want to watch two of the other games, Rhode Island vs. Pittsburgh (6 p.m. CT) and Navy at Texas (8 p.m. CT), you have to have ESPNU.Ah the joys of early season college basketball....
Watching LeBron Is Like Watching Your Ex-Girlfriend Fornicate
2010-11-03 12:04:00 ReutersI've now watched two full Miami Heat games out of sheer self-loathing. I have friends, including Phil and BooDaddy!, who say they will not watch LeBron James play in a Miami Heat uniform, but here's my argument: you can't avoid it, so why bother? LeBron and the Heat are on ESPN every 3.2 seconds, so unless you're going to stop watching the dominant sports network on television, you're going to have to see him doing his thing anyway. So after watching two Heat games I've come to the conclusion that, for Cavs fans, watching LeBron play for the Heat is kind of like watching your ex-girlfriend have sex with a guy who is much better looking and cooler than...
Big Brother Really is Watching
2010-10-21 20:51:00 Federal Agents Urged to ‘Friend’ People on Social Networks A privacy watchdog has uncovered a government memo that encourages federal agents to befriend people on a variety of social networks, to take advantage of their readiness to share — and to spy on them. In response to a Freedom of Information request, the government released a handful of documents, including a May 2008 memo detailing how social-networking sites are exploited by the Office of Fraud Detection and National Security (FDNS). As of Thursday morning, Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, and Digg had not commented on the report, which details the official government program to spy via social networking. Other websites the government is spying on include Twitter, MySpace, Craigslist and Wikipedia, according to the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), which filed the FOIA request. “Narcissistic tendencies in many people fuel a need to have a large group of ‘friends’ link to their pages, and...

Perspective Watching Miners Rescue
2010-10-13 05:31:00 Life definitely keeps you grounded. Today has been a time of emotional ups and downs. Things started off on quite a high and I was finishing up the Swedish Medical Center Health Care Symposium. It's fun doing the entire live tweeting thing. Not only does it keep me on my toes as far as paying attention to the lecture and tweeting that out. I was about 30 minutes before boarding my flight at SeaTac, when it was announced that my flight would be delayed for 2 hours due to mechanical problems. I knew that I was going to miss my connecting flight. So, I knew that I had to rebook my flight - hoping to get back to my home airport tonight. I was told that it was impossible to get home tonight, and that the earliest that I could get home was tomorrow. Needless to say, I was really upset by this. No only am I in the office tomorrow, I'm also on call tonorrow night. Being mad and embarrassed, I had to call my office to let them know that I had to cancel most of my morning patients and to ...

2010-07-25 22:11:00 Tonight on NBC, a special will run called "America Now: Friends & Neighbors." Here's a description from The Huffington Post. "'America Now: Friends & Neighbors' was produced from nine months of original reporting in the region, documenting those who have been hardest hit by the recession. The special includes a woman who opened a food pantry, a young mother who slept in a van with her children, a laid-off father unable to heat his home, and an extended family of 14 crowded into a 4-bedroom house to survive. It also features the Ohioans' clever appeal to President Obama: making pleas for jobs and food written on thousands of paper plates."

Tour de France: The Coolest Sporting Event You're Not Watching
2010-07-03 22:32:00 It's an event chock full of history, sure - but it's also packed with devilish personalities, persnickety announcers, petty villans, pain, blood, foam (at the mouth) sinew, sweat, and glory. They don't pay me enough to keep watching these
2010-06-03 14:47:00 I managed to tune in for about the equivalent of 4 outs of the Sox game last night. Frankly, I'm kind of glad I did, it just looked flat out awful. Really just needed a night off from sports. With all the other stuff going on, none of it positive, especially for Chicago, I needed the night off. Here's a brief game wrapup.Gavin Floyd was godawful. So, I watched about 4 outs, I had to see about 10 hitters double to catch those 4 outs. My favorite out was in the 2nd inning when Cooper came out to buy the bullpen more time to get ready, and I think he basically told Gavin to throw nothing but curveballs to the next...

Why I enjoy watching hockey and the Blackhaws
2010-05-07 20:20:00 So, I was thinking to myself today why I liked to watch hockey so much. Why I don't get all weird like I do with baseball--watching baseball I do things like analyze the game, get frustrated with poor play and say things like, "that pitch was the dumbest effing thing ever." Then I realized why. I never played/coached hockey.
Start Watching The Blackhawks. NOW.
2010-05-07 18:37:00 I'm not saying you need to jump on the bandwagon with both feet, buy a dog and name it Mikita, or spend a few hundred bucks on authentic Hawks sweaters. But you need to get over any bias you may have about the sport and just try it.

2010-03-17 19:13:00 For Christmas I received an iPod Touch from Mr. Schmitty.Wow. That sounded dirty and I bet quite intriguing for those of you who are technically challenged.Anywho. I heart this gadget so very, VERY much. I love listening to my tunes while I play games and read blogs. I can even play Bejeweled Blitz and update my staus on Facebook without leaving my bed.It is the perfect toy to suck the time right out of your day!And with Wi-Fi connectivity you can even play games against other lazy human beings and not just the game's computer player. My favorite game at the moment is Words With Friends, which is much like Scrabble. You can create a game with a random opponent or you can enter the screen name of someone you know.A feature of the application will also let you connect through Twitter and Facebook to announce to all of your friends that you are looking for opponents.I did this numerous times and had just one nibble.
