Waterford City Manager Conn Murray moves on
2007-07-03 17:54:00 Waterford City Manager Conn Murray announced this week that he is to move on to a new position as County Manager with Louth County Council. Conn first came to Waterford City Council around 4 years ago and in that time he has certainly made a positive contribution to the development of the city. During his tenure as City Manager Waterford has certainly emerged to fulfill its role as Gateway of the South East. At last nights meeting of Waterford City Council members paid tribute to the work of Conn Murray. On a personal note while there were occasions on which I disagreed with Conn I would like to think we both shared the same vision and same aims for the development of the city. And even though we may have disagreed on certain issues his door was always open to me as a Councillor and by extension to the the people I represent.I wish Conn every success in his new position.
Historical Mayoral Election in Waterford
2007-06-25 23:38:00 I have just come from an historical meeting of Waterford City Council where we elected Cllr Mary O'Halloran as Mayor of Waterford City. Cllr O'Halloran of Fine Gael will now go down in history as the first female mayor of the city. It is amazing to think that in the long history of the city that haven't had a female mayor before now. She was supported tonight by her Fine Gael colleagues, Labour Party, Fianna Fail, Independents and Sinn Fein. I would like to take this opportunity to wish Mayor O'Halloran well in her new position and hope she enjoys her year in office.
Project 2014 launched today
2007-06-19 01:30:00 Waterford City Council launched its vision for the future of the city today. Project 2014 has been prepared by Waterford City Council in partnership with neighbouring local authorities and other stakeholders in the public and private sector. The visionary plan being put forward by Waterford City Council will see over ?2.4billion euro spent in the city over the next seven years. This plan will focus on developing the city in "quarters" such as the cultural quarter and the government quarter. But more than that it will also focus on quality of life issues in the city with improved and additional sporting and recreational facilities. Project 2014 will also see greater investment in public transport over the next 7 years. The roll out of the plan will be an exciting time for everyone in Waterford.
Waterford City Council sign up to Make Room Campaign
2007-06-05 21:40:00 Waterford City Council agreed last night to sign up to the Make Room campaign which seeks to end homelessness by 2010. This followed a motion in my name calling on the City Council to support the aims of the campaign. Focus Ireland, the Simon Communities of Ireland, the Society of St Vincent de Paul and Threshold have all come together under the banner of the MakeRoom Campaign. This is an unprecedented collaborative campaign by these organisations, and its success would mean that Ireland would be among the first countries in the world to successfully end homelessness. Here in Waterford there are over 110 homeless people with a small number of them sleeping rough in the city. Homelessness is a complex issue and is not just about providing accommodation. Over the past number of weeks I have met with a number of those who are currently homeless in Waterford City and in a lot of cases their story is one of addiction or indeed abuse. In fact local research shows that the two biggest reas...
Waterford City Council Boundary Extension falls on deaf ears.
2007-04-01 19:16:00 This months online poll asks the question "Are you in favour of Waterford City Councils Boundary extension application into South Kilkenny". I was prompted to ask this question following the comments made by Minister Dick Roche recently where he dismissed Waterford City Council's application for a boundary extensioin into south Kilkenny. Now Minister Roche has not read the application where an undeniable case is made by Wateford City Council or else he is just playing politics with the issue in the run up to the General Election. What do you think? Why not register your vote on the right hand side bar on this site.
CCTV announced for Waterford - again!!
2007-04-01 01:51:00 Forgive me for being cynical about the most recent announcement made on Friday regarding the provision of CCTV for Waterford City. This is an issue that I have raised on Waterford City Council a number of times only to be told that we were still awaiting government approval. It is also something that has been announced by at least two Ministers over the last number of years. So when I read yesterday that the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice Michael McDowell had announced that 17 new CCTV systems will be in place in towns and city suburbs across the country by the end of the year I failed to get excited. This is typical of this government who promise a lot but deliver little. There is certainly a need for a CCTV in Waterford City Centre as there is in any city centre. Such a system would be of great benefit to Gardai in the combat against crime in this part of the city. Lets hope that the government will deliver on its promise - this time!!
Waterford City Council Roads Programme 2007
2007-03-06 00:37:00 At tonight's meeting of Waterford City Council we adopted the Roads Programme for 2007. This was particularly welcome as it set out important road improvements throughout the City over the next year. The overall projected expenditure for 2007 is almost ?34million with just less than 50% coming from the Council own funds and the balance coming from state grants. Expenditure on the upkeep and improvement of the National Road network is funded from State grants and includes the N25 Waterford City Bypass, National Primary Maintenance, Rice Bridge maintenance and Bus priority measures. Waterford City Council is also committed to spending nearly ?23million on the Non National Roads. I was particularly pleased to see the inclusion of traffic calming on Ballybeg Drive and improvements on the Old Tramore Road and Kilbarry Road. I have been raising the poor condition of the Old Tramore Road for some time now and I am pleased to see this road finally included for improvements. All in a... |
