Time for action on employment front in Waterford
2007-11-09 00:40:00 Our worst fears were confirmed this week when Waterford Wedgewood Chief Executive Peter Cameron announced that there will be job losses at their plant in Waterford. Negotiations between management and unions are currently underway and lets hope that the result of these negotiations will result in these job losses being kept to a minimum. However what is worrying is that this announcement is part of a growing trend of job losses in the Waterford area over the last few years. Last week we had another announcement from Bausch and Lomb of around 100 job losses in their Waterford plant. Yet the response from the government to what is fast becoming a crisis in Waterford has been largely disappointing to say the least. In fact the government could make an immediate positive impact to the development of Waterford by announcing the upgrading of Waterford Institute of Technology to University of the South East. I believe that such an announcement would have an immediate effect on the economic ...

BreastCheck update for Waterford
2007-10-18 17:29:00 Waterford Regional Hospital has been approached to be a base for BreastCheck Mobile Units according to a response I received from BreastCheck this week . I was also informed this week that the mobile units for BreastCheck have been commissioned and the tendering process is now complete. According to the information made available to me this week BreastCheck will take delivery of these later this year on a phased basis through to next springtime. At this stage the schedule is not yet confirmed for the different counties including Waterford, Kerry, and South Tipperary. This will be dictated by operational reasons. These mobile units will be located in counties in the Southern area furthest away from the static unit in Cork. The location is generally in larger cities and towns and BreastCheck will negotiate with suitable locations / hospital sites in advance. A number of hospitals have already been approached in the Hospital Network in relation to the feasibility of locating units on t...

Waterford residents to petition Minister Gormley
2007-10-09 22:17:00 Recently I assisted the residents of Birchwood housing estate in Waterford city to take up a petition calling on Minister John Gormley to allow tenants of Voluntary Housing Associations purchase their own homes. Full story here. This campaign was started in Waterford a number of years ago by Respond tenants in Waterford and has since spread to other areas including Dungarvan, Carrick on Suir and Wexford where there is also a large number of voluntary housing association tenants. Residents in housing estates such as Birchwood and the other voluntary housing estates do not enjoy the same rights as residents in the local authority estates where there is a tenant purchase scheme. It is now time for the government to introduce a Tenant Purchase Scheme for tenants of the Voluntary Housing Associations similar to the scheme for local authority tenants. This petition highlights the demands of residents of the voluntary housing sector and will be sent directly to Minister Gormley. I would li...
Incineration for Waterford? No thanks!
2007-09-06 22:37:00 At a recent environmental conference Minister for the Environment John Gormley argued that landfill and incineration are the same and he wanted to encourage alternatives. This prompted me to pose the question whether plans for an incinerator in the Waterford area should now be abandoned. In light of this latest intervention by the Minister in the incineration debate let me know what you think of proposals for incineration in the South East.

Death of Spanish Civil War Veteran Moe Fishman
2007-08-09 15:42:00 Cllr Seamus Ryan, Michael O'Riordan, Jack Jones and Moe Fishmanat the unveiling of the memorial to the Waterford Volunteers who fought in defence of the Spanish Republic.I learned with great sadness today of the death of Spanish Civil War veteran Moe Fishman. Moe was one of those brave men and women who fought in defence of the Spanish Republic in the ranks of the International Brigade. I met Moe Fishman when he came to Waterford for the unveiling of the memorial to the eleven Waterford volunteers who went to Spain to fight against the Fascists. Also present on that memorable occasion in July 2004 were Spanish Civil War veterans Michael O'Riordan and Jack Jones. I believe that La Pasionaria, Dolores Ibarurri was referring to men like Moe Fishman when she said "You are history. You are legend."
Waterford City Community Challenge 2007
2007-08-03 18:07:00 Congratulations to the three successful projects in the Community Challenge 2007. Waterford City Council launched the 2007 Community Challenge Programme back in April with the aim of encouraging community based voluntary activity in Waterford City. The three successful groups announced recently were:1. St Paul's Scout Group for the creation of an urban garden for scout and community use and construction of storage facility for the scout group at the Scout Hall Lisduggan.2. Ballybeg Action Group for the design and creation of a remembrance garden at Ballybeg Park.3. Cork Road and Kingsmeadow Resident's Association for the development of the park area at Kingsmeadow Cork RoadAll of these groups are to be commended for their ongoing work in their communities. The scheme will finish in October and it is intended to have a presentation evening shortly after together with the selection and prize award for best project.Well done everybody!!
Waterford Peoples Park well worth a visit
2007-08-02 00:15:00 I visited Waterford Peoples Park yesterday to see for myself the improvements made. Waterford City Council has undertaken major improvements to the Park which when finished will see a new skateboard park and hard court area. This along with the children's play areas already in place will provide a wonderful recreation area for the people of Waterford and visitors to the city. Another new addition to the Park is the excellent Park Cafe which is situated in the old Park Lodge. Well worth a visit.

BreastCheck delayed even further for Waterford?
2007-07-26 16:00:00 Regular readers of this blog will be aware of our ongoing campaign to bring BreastCheck to Waterford. BreastCheck is the national breast cancer screening programme for women between the ages of 50 - 64. Currently the service is available only in certain parts of the country despite repeated broken promises by both BreastCheck and indeed the government that the service would be made available locally. The Labour Party in Waterford has been campaigning to make this service available to women in Waterford City and County for a number of years. As part of this campaign we collected over 4,000 signatures and here on this blog I collected another 700 signatures in an online petition. However it seems this campaign is going to have to go on a bit longer as once again it seems there will be further delays.I received an email this week from BreastCheck via the HSE stating that they are unable to provide a date for the roll out of the service to Waterford. This failure to provide the BreastCh...
Watershed for Waterford?
2007-07-09 17:35:00 All aboard the Deise bandwagon! My roots are in Tramore (which rather aptly translates from Irish as big beach). For the uneducated out there, that’s in Waterford. It’s a tenuous enough link considering it’s donkey’s years since my grandad moved to Dublin. However when it comes to cheering on teams that are on the crest ...

Waterford City Manager Conn Murray moves on
2007-07-03 17:54:00 Waterford City Manager Conn Murray announced this week that he is to move on to a new position as County Manager with Louth County Council. Conn first came to Waterford City Council around 4 years ago and in that time he has certainly made a positive contribution to the development of the city. During his tenure as City Manager Waterford has certainly emerged to fulfill its role as Gateway of the South East. At last nights meeting of Waterford City Council members paid tribute to the work of Conn Murray. On a personal note while there were occasions on which I disagreed with Conn I would like to think we both shared the same vision and same aims for the development of the city. And even though we may have disagreed on certain issues his door was always open to me as a Councillor and by extension to the the people I represent.I wish Conn every success in his new position.
Shots fired after Peaceful Fridays in Waterford
2007-07-02 00:10:00 source: one876entertainment.com Wild rumours raced around the entertainment community yesterday that deejay Vybz Kartel had been shot at by gunmen in a section of Portmore, St. Catherine after the Peaceful Fridays dance.
New Labour Mayor of County Waterford
2007-07-01 21:12:00 Congratulations to new Labour Party Mayor of County Waterford Cllr Billy Kyne who was elected this week. Billy was first elected to Dungarvan UDC in 1979 and co-opted onto County Council two years later, retaining his seat on both local authorities at every election since. Billy, son of the late former TD Tom Kyne, has been elected Mayor for the fourth time, having previously chaired the local authority in 1988, '90 and '92, as well as Dungarvan Town Council on a number of occasions. I have no doubt that Billy will once again be an excellent Mayor of County Waterford. Congratulations Billy.
Historical Mayoral Election in Waterford
2007-06-25 23:38:00 I have just come from an historical meeting of Waterford City Council where we elected Cllr Mary O'Halloran as Mayor of Waterford City. Cllr O'Halloran of Fine Gael will now go down in history as the first female mayor of the city. It is amazing to think that in the long history of the city that haven't had a female mayor before now. She was supported tonight by her Fine Gael colleagues, Labour Party, Fianna Fail, Independents and Sinn Fein. I would like to take this opportunity to wish Mayor O'Halloran well in her new position and hope she enjoys her year in office.
Project 2014 launched today
2007-06-19 01:30:00 Waterford City Council launched its vision for the future of the city today. Project 2014 has been prepared by Waterford City Council in partnership with neighbouring local authorities and other stakeholders in the public and private sector. The visionary plan being put forward by Waterford City Council will see over ?2.4billion euro spent in the city over the next seven years. This plan will focus on developing the city in "quarters" such as the cultural quarter and the government quarter. But more than that it will also focus on quality of life issues in the city with improved and additional sporting and recreational facilities. Project 2014 will also see greater investment in public transport over the next 7 years. The roll out of the plan will be an exciting time for everyone in Waterford.
Waterford point the way
2007-06-17 23:01:00 Waterford hurlers came out on top in an exciting Munster semi final today against Cork. This victory sets them up for a Munster Final meeting against either Tipperary or Limerick. Today's game lived up to all the pre match expectations and was a pulsating encounter from the start with Waterford coming out on top on a scoreline of Waterford 5 - 15 Cork 3 - 18. It could be a long hot Summer yet!!

Waterford City Council sign up to Make Room Campaign
2007-06-05 21:40:00 Waterford City Council agreed last night to sign up to the Make Room campaign which seeks to end homelessness by 2010. This followed a motion in my name calling on the City Council to support the aims of the campaign. Focus Ireland, the Simon Communities of Ireland, the Society of St Vincent de Paul and Threshold have all come together under the banner of the MakeRoom Campaign. This is an unprecedented collaborative campaign by these organisations, and its success would mean that Ireland would be among the first countries in the world to successfully end homelessness. Here in Waterford there are over 110 homeless people with a small number of them sleeping rough in the city. Homelessness is a complex issue and is not just about providing accommodation. Over the past number of weeks I have met with a number of those who are currently homeless in Waterford City and in a lot of cases their story is one of addiction or indeed abuse. In fact local research shows that the two biggest reas...
Garda substation needed in Waterford
2007-06-03 18:44:00 The need for a garda substation in Ward Three area of Waterford City has been the subject of debate for quite some time now. Community groups, residents associations and elected representatives have all been calling for a more decentralised approach from Gardai in Waterford city. Here in Waterford we do benefit from excellent community gardai who have built up good relationships with local communities. However I believe that the best form of policing is gardai on the beat in our local housing estates and communities. The provision of a Garda sub station in Ward Three will help achieve this. This months online poll is asking the question whether you are in favour of a Garda Substation in Ward Three in Waterford City. So why not cast your vote and let me know what you think.
Waterford voters return a Labour TD once again
2007-05-27 20:46:00 Once again Waterford Labour Party TD Brian O'Shea has been reelected to represent this constituency. Brian has represented Waterford in the Dail since 1989 and in that time he served as Junior Minister on two occasions in the Departments of Health and Agriculture. His reelection not only reflects his own tremendous constituency work but also the work of Labour Party members in Waterford. Over the last number of years local party activists have been involved in various campaigns here in Waterford. Issues such as the Radiotherapy campaign, the campaign to bring Breast Check to Waterford and the campaign for a University in Waterford all remain a priority with the Labour Party in Waterford.
Exit Poll shows no clear winners
2007-05-25 08:41:00 This mornings exit poll while showing no decisive winner must be good news for Fianna Fail. The one thing it does show is the collapse of the PD vote. However I always treat exit polls with caution as they show first preference votes only and as we know only too well the government of the country will be decided not on first preference votes only but on the 9 and 10th votes from every box in every constituency. So its all to play for as we head out to the counts. Here in Waterford counting will take place in the Butler Hall, St Johns Park. Waterford is usually one of the first constituencies to declare a result and should give us an indication of how things are going nationally.
Election Upate - Waterford
2007-05-19 17:13:00 Brian O'Shea TD, Cllr Seamus Ryan, Cllr Jack Walsh andLabour Party members and supporters canvassing in Waterford City todayI have just come back from a very successful canvass in Waterford City centre today where we met with hundreds of Waterford voters. There is a definite mood for change amongst the voters and this was evident today. Without a doubt the main issue in this election is health. During todays canvass in Waterford City centre people were only too willing to tell us of their experience of the health services. Another issue that came up was the lack of affordable housing in Waterford. The slow delivery of affordable housing is a major cause of concern for many young couples who are trying to get a foot on the property ladder. Crime also featured and I met a number of local voters from my own electoral area who raised the issue of the location of a Garda sub station in Ward Three. This is an issue I have been campaigning for both on City Council and on the Joint...
Labour support University in Waterford
2007-05-18 01:30:00 The Labour Party has made a clear commitment to establishing a University of the South East based in Waterford. In fact the exact wording in the Election Manifesto is as follows:"We will establish a multi-campus University of the South East with Waterford Institute of Technology as its hub."This commitment cannot be much clearer and goes a lot further than any of the other parties. Fianna Fail in particular once again dodge the issue and give some meaningless commitment to examine the submission put forward by Waterford Institute of Technology. As a member of the governing body of WIT I am convinced now more than ever of the need for a university to be established. The South East continues to under perform economically and all the indicators show that we are being left behind as region in comparison to other regions. This is an issue that continues to be raised by voters on our canvass. Yet Fianna Fail representatives in Waterford have been silent on this issue and after seeing thei...
Fianna Fail not an option
2007-05-17 17:31:00 As reported by the Irish Times today the Labour Party leader Pat Rabbitte once again made it quite clear where he stands on coalition with Fianna Fail. He told listeners to Pat Kenny's radio show "I have no intention of doing any business with Fianna Fáil." This surely must end speculation by the media on the issue of coalition with Fianna Fail. This election campaign has shown that there is a hunger amongst the electorate to remove this current Fianna Fail/ PD government. Speaking to Labour Party members in Waterford and around the country there is no appetite in Labour for propping up a jaded Fianna Fail party. Quite the opposite in fact. I don't think I have ever come across a more concerted campaign to remove Fianna Fail from office. In case you missed what Pat had to say today here is a quote from the programme."As regards the electoral strategy I have risked my reputation as leader in constructing a platform with Fine Gael in order to ensure that the people will have the opp...
Election Update Waterford
2007-05-15 00:22:00 The last few days of the canvass have been hectic here in Waterford. Yesterday we were joined on the canvass by radio journalist Mark Power of WLRfm who came around with Brian O'Shea in the Manor Lawn and Cork Road area of the city. Once again the response was very positive and despite the inclement weather we were upbeat at the end of the canvass. One feature of this campaign seems to be the lack of Fianna Fail canvassers in the city. The word is that the Soldiers of Destiny are dropping their leaflets rather than calling at the doors. The main issues that came up on the canvass were mainly health related with some voters taking the opportunity to recall their own difficulties in the health service. Tonight we canvassed Lismore Park and had our largest canvass team so far. Speaking to party members after the canvass the clear message coming from the voters is that there is a demand for a change of government. One lady came to door and asked me not to vote to put Fianna Fail...
Election Update 3 -Waterford
2007-05-08 14:50:00 I have just come back from another good morning's canvass for Brian O'Shea. It is quite clear that the issue in this General Election campaign is Health. There is a certain amount of anger amongst voters about the condition of our health services. This was evident again this morning when a number of people complained about the failure of the government to deliver on the proposed cancer unit at Waterford Regional Hospital. The other issue that was raised this morning was the provision of services for our elderly. There is a recognition now that despite the unprecedented levels of wealth that this government had that they failed to deliver on a comprehensive health package for our elderly. The response from voters to Brian and the Labour Party remains strong and we remain on target to retain the seat. What is clear is the demand for change amongst voters. This is becoming increasingly evident as the campaign continues.
Election Update 2 - Waterford
2007-05-07 18:28:00 A week really is a long time in politics. During the past week McDowell has put it up to Bertie regarding allegations about his personal finances. It will be interesting to hear Berties response which he has promised to give before polling day. However thankfully voters in Waterford seem to be more concerned with the more important issues like health and housing rather than the state of Berties personal finances. All parties are canvassing hard in Waterford with the Labour Party team working hard for the reelection of Brian O'Shea. Having been out canvassing myself for nearly two weeks now I am pleased with the response of the voters to our canvass for Brian. There seems to be a growing recognition in Waterford that Brian is possibly Waterford's best bet for a cabinet place after the next election. If the alternative coalition of Labour /Fine Gael is succesful then I believe Brian could well find himself at the cabinet table. One thing that is surprising though is the report...

Election update - Waterford
2007-05-04 01:39:00 After over a week on the campaign trail here in Waterford the campaign to elect Brian O'Shea is progressing well. With nearly 9,000 voters on the Register of Electors in Ward Three in Waterford there are a lot of houses to canvass and not enough days in the week!! I always look forward to election campaigns and the cut and thrust of doorstep politics and this election is no different. This type of campaigning allows you to engage with local voters and to discuss the issues of the day. Over the last week voters have raised issues such as the University for Waterford, improved Cancer care, stamp duty etc. And to prove the maxim that all politics is local voters have also raised issues such as the provision of ramps and the closure of troublesome alleyways. These were some of the important issues that arose on the doorstep this week during a campaign that is now well and truly on. The message that is coming back from all our canvassers is that there is a mood for change among...
Waterford on the Double
2007-04-30 00:34:00 What a day for both the hurlers and camogie players of Waterford. Our hurlers won the National Hurling League title for the first time since 1963 beating Kilkenny on a scoreline of Waterford 0 - 20 Kilkenny 0- 18. Also our Camogie team won their title by defeating Down by 2 points in another exciting match. Well done to both teams. This was an extraordinary day for all of those associated with both hurling and camogie in the county.
Election 07 - 5 more years No thanks!!
2007-04-21 11:16:00 The general election campaign has really began in earnest in Waterford over the last few weeks with all the parties now on the campaign trail. According to the recent Red C poll the result will be predictable in this constituency but who knows there may be a surprise yet. Each constituency has issues that are unique to that area and Waterford is no different. The lack of inward investment into the South East and to Waterford in particular is a serious issue for all of us. The subsequent hemorrhaging of jobs from Waterford and the failure of government to replace these jobs with other quality jobs has resulted in an area that is underachieving economically. A fact recognised by the South East Regional Authority and the Irish Regions office. Undoubtedly there has been progress in areas such as the development of our airport and road infrastructure but when you consider the resources that were available to this government over the last 10 years there should really have been significa...
Waterford City Community Challenge 2007 - your opportunity!
2007-04-19 00:50:00 Waterford City Council launched the Community Challenge 2007 this week. This innovative initiative from the Council is offering a total fund of ?50,000 for a Community Challenge scheme.
