Odds And Ends: Weaver, Mulder, Pena, Giambi
2008-05-30 18:42:00 Here are a few random notes from the MLBiverse... Paul Hagen is reporting that the Mets are interested in acquiring a first baseman and/or a corner outfielder. Hagen says that Omar Minaya is rumored to be interested in Kevin Millar, Jason Bay and Xavier Nady. Hagen must share a source with Dan Graziano, who mentions the same trio. Might Aaron Heilman be used as bait? According to the minor league deal that Jeff Weaver signed with the Brewers, if he was not called up by this Sunday he could ask for his release. The Brewers and Weaver's agent, Scott Boras, have agreed to extend that deadline to June 15. Mark Mulder, who has made three starts since 2006, announced that he would retire if a third surgery became necessary on his ailing shoulder. The Royals snagged catcher Brayan Pena off waivers from the Braves. Rany Jazayerli proposes a Cubs-Royals trade. Joel Sherman wonders if the Yankees could buy out Jason Giambi for $5MM and then re-sign him. Cork Gaines writes for Ra...

2008-05-28 17:39:00 Plenty of links for today. Indians top prospect Adam Miller is pretty much done for the season. '09 free agent shortstop Orlando Cabrera and manager Ozzie Guillen are not getting along. Peter Bendix explains the savings the Reds get by waiting to promote Jay Bruce. Morgan Ensberg is a DFA candidate, while LaTroy Hawkins may be getting there. Bret Boone's comeback attempt has ended. Jeff Weaver (6.69 ERA in Triple A) can ask for his release if not called up by Sunday. Hank Blalock may not be in the Rangers' long-term plans. The Indians designated Jorge Julio for assignment.

Weaver Staying? Turnbow Not Going Anywhere.
2008-05-25 12:40:00 Tom Haudricout of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports Jeff Weaver has a 6.52 ERA in 29 innings in Triple-A Nashville and can ask for his release next Sunday if he doesn't see an opportunity with the Brewers as realistic. Weaver had no spring training, so he's still in rough form. Whether or not that form improves has yet to be determined. The Brewers currently have two struggling starters in Dave Bush and Seth McClung who just replaced Carlos Villanueva in the rotation. In that same piece, we find that Derrick Turnbow has "suffered a near-total command meltdown" in Nashville. In 6 outings, he has pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowed five hits, seven earned runs, and a jaw-dropping 15 walks! Still, there's no plans for his release. Writes Haudricourt, "'As long as we're paying him what we're paying him, there's no sense in doing that,' [Brewers GM Doug] Melvin said. "It's not like he's taking somebody's job.'" Turnbow is owed $3.2MM. ...

Sigourney Weaver On "Alien" Sequel
2008-04-18 22:42:00 The other day, we asked Sigourney Weaver to comment on any similarities that might exist between Ellen Ripley, the butt-kicking heroin from ?Alien? and its sequels, and Dr. Grace Augustine, her new character from ?Avatar.? But while we?re geared up for Sigourney?s newest, we couldn?t help but wonder more about her first big-screen role, especially given recent rumors that director Ridley Scott had an idea for another ?Alien? film. So, will we ever see Ripley again? ?The last time [Ridley and I] saw each other we talked about it. The character is still interesting [and] I?d love to work with Ridley again,? Weaver said, raising our hopes to their absolute apex before immediately dashing them against the rocks of reality. ?But Fox has effectively killed it because of 'Alien vs. Predator.? What else can you do with the creature? You can take the situation, you can go back to where they came from. ?To play someone who ages a couple hundred years was fascinating,? she added. ?[But] let [...

Jeff Weaver to sign deal with Milawaukee
2008-04-15 21:27:00 St. Louis Cardinals fans might get to see postseason hero Jeff Weaver back at Busch Stadium this summer. But if he makes it, he'll be wearing a Milwaukee Brewers uniform. Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel baseball writer Tom Haudricourt reported in his blog this morning that the Brewers are completing a minor-league deal with Weaver for "not a lot of money," according to GM Gord Ash.Ash said Weaver, 31, would participate in a "hurry-up spring training" in Arizona before reporting to Class AAA Nashville. The Brewers pursued the righthander after they put Chris Capuano (elbow injury) on the disabled list and released Claudio Vargas.

Brewers Sign Jeff Weaver
2008-04-15 12:36:00 Sounds like Scott Boras finally found a job for Jeff Weaver. According to Tom Haudricourt, Weaver signed an incentive-laden minor league deal with the Brewers. I never would've guessed it - the Brewers will already have an extra starter on their hands when Yovani Gallardo returns. It's likely that Weaver has a clause where he can become a free agent if he's not called up by a certain date. It's a risk-free move by Doug Melvin, especially with Weaver willing to start at Triple A (as he should given the late start). Weaver, 31, posted an ugly 6.20 ERA last year in 27 starts for the Mariners. Perhaps between Mike Maddux's tutelage and a return to the NL, Weaver's career can be salvaged.

Andrew Charles Weaver - Teacher Continues Teaching For A Year After Police
2008-04-10 05:45:00 Brighton, Colo. (ThaLunatic Daily) -- Andrew Charles Weaver, a 28 year old former teacher at Brighton High School has been arrested and charged after he sent police officers pictures of himself, fondling his genitals.Does it really get more humiliating than learning you've just tried to seduce a cop by wanking for him through a computer? Now that's justice all by itself - knowing such insanity likely has been viewed by cops and the buddies of cops who happen past the evidence locker. What is NOT justice - is the fact that Weaver continued teaching for a year after he was caught by law enforcement displaying such behavior for what Weaver thought was a 14 year old girl.According to police, Weaver was caught in an undercover sting operation sending nude pictures of himself to the would-be teen-aged girl back in March, 2007.The Mesa County sheriff's office along with Grand Junction police conducted a sting in which investigators posed as a 14 year old girl on the Internet. Sigourney Weaver Reunites With Tim Allen
2008-03-25 22:42:00 Sigourney Weaver Reunites With Tim AllenOn his Crazy directorial debutSource: The Hollywood Reporter Good news for fans of Galaxy Quest ? Tim Allen and Sigourney Weaver are back back back!Sadly, they won?t be reuniting on a sequel to their cracking sci-fi comedy. However, their new project, Crazy On The Outside, does sound distinctly interesting, given that it not only marks Allen?s directorial debut, but it?s a comedy about an ex-con trying to go straight.Parallels with Allen?s life will be unavoidable, of course, given that he once served time for cocaine possession ? but perhaps that personal factor is what marked this project out for Allen, and it should be interesting to see a) how much of his own experience will be brought to bear on the screenplay, by Judd Pillott and John Peaslee, and b) how he can put a comic spin on it all.Weaver will play Allen?s loving but manipulative older sister, while the wonderful J.K. Simmons will play her s...

His struggle to rebuild his life is further complicated by a loving but manipulative older sister (Weaver) and her sarcastic, taunting husband (Simmons)." Ray Liotta, Kelsey Grammer and Julie Bowen also star. THR points out the "parallels to [Allen's] own experience as an ex-con. (He served time for cocaine possession.)" Judd Pillot and John Peaslee wrote the screenplay and Allen will make his directorial debut.

Weaver being considered as opening-day starter for Angels
2008-03-17 13:25:00 Manager Mike Scioscia has not named an opening-day starter, but Jered Weaver has done enough this spring to warrant strong consideration according to the Los Angeles Times. The right-hander threw five shutout innings Sunday, giving up two hits, striking out two and walking one, to lead the Angels to a 5-2 split-squad exhibition win over the San Francisco Giants at Scottsdale Stadium. In four spring starts, all wins, Weaver has given up two runs and five hits in 14 innings, struck out eight and walked two for a 1.29 earned-run average.More important than the numbers, Weaver's fastball seems to have a little extra zip, he's shown good command of his changeup and breaking pitch, and his mechanics, outside of a little blip in his last start, have been sound.

Nats To Pass On Weaver
2008-03-14 13:11:00 Scott Boras found a deal for Kyle Lohse; will he now focus on getting Jeff Weaver a job? On Monday, Jeff's brother Jered said the Nationals and Cardinals had expressed interest. The Cards are surely out of the mix now, and MLB.com's Bill Ladson says Weaver has seemingly "priced himself out of the Nats' pay range." I'll guess the Nats were thinking $2MM or so. So if the Nats and Cards are both out, what's the elder Weaver to do? Baltimore seems to be his best option. Toronto could work. Perhaps the Astros as a long shot. In a note at the bottom of his article, Ladson also quashes a short-lived Felipe Lopez to the Cubs rumor. He adds that the Dodgers have legitimate interest in Willie Harris.

Jeff Weaver waiting for his opportunity
2008-03-11 12:32:00 Jeff Weaver is unemployed, three weeks before the start of the season the Los Angeles Times reported. The former Dodgers and Angels pitcher won the game that clinched the 2006 World Series championship for the St. Louis Cardinals, but he is 15-27 with a 5.96 earned-run average the last two seasons. The Washington Nationals and St. Louis Cardinals have expressed interest, said his younger brother, Angels pitcher Jered Weaver. Jeff's recent numbers might not sparkle, but he averages 190 innings a season with a career ERA of 4.72, in many years enough for a job offer if not a lucrative contract. Jeff is 31 and is not retiring, Jered said. "He wants to get four or five more years in," Jered said. "He's working out and trying to wait it out, just trying to get ready."

Nationals, Cardinals Interested In Jeff Weaver?
2008-03-11 09:51:00 Whither Jeff Weaver? We haven't heard much about potential destinations for the 31 year-old righty. Probably has to do with his 6.20 ERA last year, but at least he's healthy. Jeff's younger brother Jered piped up yesterday, saying that the Nationals and Cardinals have expressed interest. Hard to say if that interest is current or just occurred at some point this winter. But either team would do well to bring him in on a minor league deal. If he's holding out for a Major League contract it may be time to adjust expectations. When teams have their rotations all lined up on paper during the spring, with their rose-colored glasses on, adding a guy like Weaver isn't terribly appealing. But perhaps this year Scott Boras will try a new ploy with Weaver and Kyle Lohse by letting them sit out until April or even May. We've seen the mercenary thing with Roger Clemens, but not so much with healthy, younger pitchers. A few starters ge...

Rosenthal's Latest: Gross, Weaver, Encarnacion
2008-02-23 11:30:00 Ken Rosenthal is on the scene with some new rumors. Astros president Tal Smith arguing other teams' arbitration cases. Rosenthal finds it a bit awkward, while Keith Law finds it to be a hilarious conflict of interest. Possible trades of Matt Murton to the Padres or Rangers seem to have fizzled. The Padres may turn to the Brewers' Gabe Gross, a player who previously caught the eye of the A's, Indians, and Braves. Our good friend PECOTA sees a .267/.366/.467 line from Gross this year. With Gross and various veteran starters, the Brewers have some surpluses to work with. Rosenthal believes the Cardinals' interest in Jeff Weaver to be not especially serious. They've got in-house candidates to start, and Matt Clement needing some time is not a revelation. We've read about extension possibilities for Matt Capps and Alex Rios. To that mix, Rosenthal adds Edwin Encarnacion. The Reds might want to do it now; he seems primed for a big year.

Cardinals interested in Colon, Weaver for pitching help
2008-02-22 21:21:00 The St. Louis Cardinals' signing of free-agent righthander Matt Clement to an incentive-laden, one-year contract last month was intended to address an innings shortage that torpedoed last season's starting rotation. Now, with Clement's availability for opening day increasingly in question, the club may reconsider whether it needs to import another arm.Insisting that the organization retain enough flexibility to pursue another pitcher if necessary, Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak has spoken with representatives for 2006 World Series hero Jeff Weaver and 2005 AL Cy Young Award winner Bartolo Colon.

Cards Eyeing Weaver, Colon
2008-02-20 23:35:00 With the price of free agent starting pitching dropping by the day and Matt Clement looking questionable, it's only natural that the Cardinals would explore the market. Indeed, John Mozeliak is looking at Jeff Weaver and Bartolo Colon. Seems that Impacto Deportivo may have been misinformed on the whole Colon-to-Chicago thing. Weaver seems the smarter option for a team looking for healthy innings. If nothing else, Weaver can provide that. Something tells me he's not getting $8MM this time around. His most recent success was in St. Louis, so maybe Dave Duncan can guide him to a league average season. Colon is a wild card. Even if his stuff isn't there, if he can take the ball he has value. He'll obviously find the NL more to his liking.
