Wednesday evening link session... ESPN.com's Buster Olney thinks Brandon Webb is right in not accepting a compromise deal from the Diamondbacks. He lists multiple teams that would be willing to offer the former Cy Young Award winner a lucrative one-year contract, including the Dodgers, Angels, Cubs, White Sox, Yankees and Red Sox. Scott Merkin of MLB.com gathered this quote from White Sox GM Kenny Williams, regarding his outlook heading into the offseason: "No. 1, I don?t like what I see on the free agent market, and what I do like, it?s going to cost you a No. 1 pick. " According to Jorge Arangure of ESPN.com, Aroldis Chapman's agent will be present at Yankee Stadium this weekend to take in a game against the Red Sox. Chapman, though, will remain in Andorra. Diamondbacks want Webb for less than his option

The Diamondbacks have an $8.5 million option on pitcher Brandon Webb(notes) and the word is that the team doesn't want to pay him that kind of salary next year so it may buy him out for $2 million, according to the Arizona Republic, and try to negotiate something better.The team supposedly wants Webb back. He's not promising anything, though, if the team buys him out of his contract. He is not interested in a restructured deal. Webb noted to the East Valley Tribune that the older John Smoltz(notes) has $5.5 million coming to him from the St. Louis Cardinals next year and Webb feels like he is at least worth that.There is a feeling in Arizona that when push comes to shove, the team will pick up the option but that there will be lots of talk about not picking it up before then.

We've seen speculation that the Diamondbacks could decline Brandon Webb's $8.5MM club option in hopes of negotiating a more favorable deal, as risky as that sounds. Given the $2MM buyout, it's a net of just $6.5MM for the D'Backs in 2010. Bob McManaman of the Arizona Republic spoke to Webb today, and the pitcher said he is not interested in a restructured deal. If the Diamondbacks decline the option, Webb will hit the open market. Talking to Scott Bordow of the East Valley Tribune, Webb referenced John Smoltz's $5.5MM guarantee, noting that "he's got a little bit of age on me and my surgery wasn't even close to his." Webb's preference is still for the D'Backs to pick up the 2010 option. Despite what's been written I'd be surprised if they don't.

Over the last few years, one consistent ‘pastoral’ voice in my life has been the music and  lyrics of Derek Webb. Derek used to play with Caedmon’s Call, a band I was introduced to and thoroughly enjoyed during my high school years. Several years back Webb started doing his own solo albums, all of which have been great, but the last three of which have spoken words of encouragement, conviction and compassion into my life. Most of his lyrics these days would be considered too political, too controversial, or too explicit for most churches, he doesn’t seem to be getting invited to many christian concerts or worship services either. But, if he had a church, I’d go to it. Let's hit up Ken Rosenthal's latest Full Count video: Rosenthal thinks the Tigers should sign Barry Bonds.  Sure, Detroit already has too many DHs, and Bonds wouldn't help their need for improved defense and speed, but they absolutely need another lefthanded bat.  Rosenthal points out that the team is 11-20 in games started by RHP.  As for the fear of a clubhouse problem, Gary Sheffield - who has feuded with Bonds in the past - has no problem and I would presume that the other players, particularly veterans, on the Tigers would echo that sentiment. The 3-year contract extension for Brandon Webb does not have "a lot of momentum."  Like Jake Peavy last year, Webb is looking for around 3 years, 52 million despite being 2 years older than Peavy. KR loves the Hanley deal.  It keeps them from having to deal another player before his contract becomes too expensive and that there shouldn't be any concern for Hanley's production to drop off.
