Firefox is winner in the Webware 100 for 2008
2008-04-24 18:59:00 Firefox is a winner in this year’s Webware 100 competition. Firefox was among the top 10 voted products that amounted for about half of the 1.9 million votes, so at least it was the most voted browser, despite Maxthon?s tricky tactics. Miro and Joost also got voted in the top ten in the Video category. The list ...
ALL things web. webware.com lists the top 100 web applications/tools/sites
2008-04-23 18:56:00 It's a good list. But let's take one category for instance. Publishing: They list 10 entries ranging from Picassa to WordPress. The two problems with this list (and the rest of the categories) is that some are there due to size and first mover status (eg. blogger) and some are missing even though they might have superior flexibility and functionality (eg. typepad or blogEngine dotNet). And with this list of 100, how in the heck is anyone supposed to make a decent evaluation of even one category. I mean you should spend some decent amount of time fiddling with the app. Could be hours or it could be days depending on the use. So you'll end up using the app with a network effect in place or the one that is "coolest" but maybe sub-optimal. Still...good list.

WWWoundup: Woot Wins Webware ?Ward! Woohoo!
2008-04-22 20:45:00 Those old Amtrak commercials were right. There really is something about a train...a train of factoids organized into list form, that is. Like, say, this list of the 2008 Webware 100, the winners of the annual Webware awards for Web 2.0 applications. Let's see, there's Craigslist, eMusic, Facebook, Flickr...and Woot! F'real, thanks to everybody who voted for us, and to Webware editor Rafe Needleman for naming us his "guilty pleasure." Rafe, you're clearly a man of distinction and taste. Here are some of my other favorite sequentially-numbered entertainments of the moment: Five recycled building materials: bottles, cans, tires, straw bales, etc. Ten weird Japanese soft drinks: Kidsbeer, God brand coffee, Diet Water, etc. Thirty-three intricate and realistic Lego creations: guitars, guns, Star Wars characters, etc. Podcasts to help you learn foreign languages: Arabic, Finnish, Hindi, etc. Ten upcoming Minor League baseball promotions: Motorboatin' Night, Fly ...

WEBWARE FROM BEYOND THE GRAVE: JUSTINCASEIDIE.COM
2008-03-17 21:36:00 I'm ready. Here's a creepy site that is based on a sound idea: JustInCaseIDie. On this service you can set up a message to be sent to a single recipient if you don't check in by a certain time or reply to a reminder e-mail. The idea is that, if you die, you can't check in, and your canned message will be sent. Said message could be a posthumous love note, a terrible expose, the combination to the safe in the house, and so on. It's implemented in a pretty lightweight fashion, so I can't imagine it being used for anything serious. Potential users need to know that it works on London time only. That may be important if you're planning a check-in from a different time zone. And what if there's an e-mail hiccup? What if you're not dead, but just on vacation and not checking e-mail (and forgot you have a JustInCaseIDie trigger set)? You could easily have "Hello, I'm dead," e-mails going out that you didn't intend. But the idea of a Web-based dead-man's switch is soun...

DEAR IPHONE: WE STILL LOVE YOU. SIGNED, WEBWARE
2008-03-06 22:37:00 When the iPhone first shipped, I thought it was pretty cool that there wasn't a way for developers to write software for it. It forced people who wanted to build iPhone "apps" to create Web apps instead, which were then delivered to the iPhone via its browser. It was a great day for Webware. But it couldn't really last. The Web is too slow, browsers too limited, AT&T's paranoia (about third-party apps running on their network) too Orwellian, and the iPhone too powerful to force developers to fit everything into Safari. Hence, Jailbreak hacks. And, finally, Apple's own version of a native software development kit (SDK) for the iPhone, announced today. Apple's Scott Forstall talks about the iPhone's core operating system.(Credit: Corinne Schulze/CNET Networks) The iPhone SDK will allow developers to have access to the same cool hardware features built into the iPhone that Apple's own developers have, such as the multitouch interface and the iPhone's accelero...

Weekend Webware: Watch the best of MythBusters in a browser
2008-02-09 18:09:00 Like the MythBusters? Then you'll probably like this small Flash-based movie viewer created by the folks at the Discovery Channel. It lets viewers pick from four clips of high speed footage from the show, including one massive explosion, two clips of sliding into baseball bases, and crash test dummy Buster bursting into flames--all in frame-by-frame goodness. Users can toggle the viewer to work either with their mouse, or use their keyboard to go frame by frame. The mouse gives slightly better results, letting viewers go back and forth quickly for great effect. Which one is your favorite? Coming soon: The 2008 Webware 100
2007-12-14 00:51:00 I've been getting a lot of e-mail queries about the next Webware 100 awards program. Just so you all know, it's coming in January. We'll open up our nomination program then, and provide the full calendar, rules, and so forth. A quick preview: The awards program is designed to point you to the best online apps out of the thousands of existing products, based on a popular vote of Web users. Much like the 2007 Webware 100 Awards, in the 2008, or 2.0 edition of the Webware 100, users will vote for the top 100 Web sites and services, in ten practical categories, such as social networking, productivity, video, and so on. Again, nominations will open up in January and we'll launch our new Webware 100 site then. Webware's editors will look over the nominations and select finalists, and then we'll move into the voting phase. And finally we'll announce the winners in a suitably garish and congratulatory fashion. Stay tuned for more details.

2007-06-22 02:00:00 Well, the winners of the Webware 100 were revealed this week. The Webware 100 consisted of voting for the top web applications in different categories. The categories go as follows: Browsing, Communications, Community, Data, Entertainment, Media, Mobile, Productivity and Comerce, Publishing, and Reference. I thought i would share with you my favorite from some of the categories. For web browsing, I used Firefox for a while, and I can see why it won in this category, but I really like Opera much more. Mostly because for some reason Firefox could never load flash...For communications, my favorite is Trillian. I've always liked it's sleek interface, and easy to access IM accounts. My favorite community winner was Digg.com, merely because it isn't riddled with user profiles with giant pictures, and also supplies great news stories. In the media category I liked two of them, Last.fm and Youtube. But I thought my favorite was Last.fm due to the cool way it tracks your music listening, ...

WebWare 100 Winner
2007-06-19 01:32:00 The results are in, and WordPress is the winner of the Webware 100 in the Publishing category. Thanks to everyone who voted, but thank you even more to all the great people who make WordPress what it is. It’s an honor to have so many of you entrust your blogs to our software, and it’s an incredible opportunity for us to live up to the high standards you’ve set. Here’s what Rafe Needleman wrote about the results: WordPress got the most votes. I was interested to see the Drupal CMS platform placing high in this category–above the consumer-oriented publishing products Typepad and Vox. Even combined, these two Six Apart services didn’t come close to winning the same number of votes as Drupal. Glad to see our open-source brother-by-another-mother representing. The rankings in Publishing were WordPress, Adobe Flash, Drupal, Blogger, and Google Analytics as the top 5.
