Jenny’s TV Guide: Wednesday June 25
2008-06-25 13:27:00
Wednesday marks the season finale of Farmer Wants a Wife on the CW at 9/8c (I am quite proud to say I never watched a single episode.) and after a month off the air, the season finale of Wife Swap on ABC at 8/7c. Tonight also features the season premiere of Shear Genius on Bravo at 10/9c and the series premiere of The Baby Borrowers on NBC at 9/8c. This alternative series based on the hit British program that asks five teenage couples - ages 16 to 19 - to set up a home and begin fast-tracking on parenthood by becoming caring parents first to a baby, then a toddler, pre-teen and grandparents - all over the course of one month. As a parent, I say this should be hysterical to watch. They have NO idea what they’re in for! (more…)
Veggie Wednesday: Hummus and Tomato Melt
2008-06-25 08:14:00
We all have things we eat that we love but are for some reason afraid to share. Maybe people will think it's 'weird' or maybe it's just too simple to be thought of as something that anyone else would eat. This is one of those things, and I'm not sure why I haven't shared it. I'll give in and share this time. I have these often for lunch or a late breakfast. More often than not I use plum tomatoes and the hummus and cheese varies. This was today's breakfast (shared with two small noseminers).Hummus and Tomato Melt1 whole wheat pita or flatbread2 Tablespoons roasted red pepper hummus3 slices ripe tomato2 Tablespoons shredded Monterey jack/Colby blend cheeseMrs. Dash Garlic and Herb seasoningSpread the pita or flatbread with hummus, top with tomatoes, sprinkle with cheese and add Mrs. Dash to taste. Heat in the microwave until cheese is melted - my microwave takes 1 minute to do this.

GAH! Cubs claw back, comeup short It's like in the movies when the hero gets his hand on the ledge, but the villian steps on his hand and the hero dies anyway. From the Trib: Down two runs entering the ninth, the Cubs loaded the bases against Baltimore closer George Sherrill on Geovany Soto's single, Mark DeRosa's walk and Ryan Theriot's infield single. But Sherrill stunningly proceeded to strike out pinch-hitter Ronny Cedeno, Kosuke Fukudome and pinch-hitter Henry Blanco to end the game. ... The Cubs came out looking lethargic against Baltimore right-hander Jeremy Guthrie, who held them to one run on four hits over the first six innings. Fukudome's fourth-inning home run to center was the only mistake Guthrie made until the seventh, when Derrek Lee and Aramis Ramirez led off with back-to-back singles. Baltimore manager Dave Trembley opted to stick with Guthrie against the left-handed-hitting Jim Edmonds, who promptly hit an arching opposite-field home run to pull the Cubs wi...

"The actions of some soldiers"; God, that man is such an asswipe! What penalty has Rumsfeld paid for authoring our torture policy along with John Yoo and David Addington? Graner and England took the fall, as they should have, but I don't see anybody else in the slam!......I see that New Hampshire Repug Senator John Sununu just...can't...let...go of that lie concerning China supposedly drilling for oil off our shores either (what a maroon - and you KNOW it's bad when Mel Martinez is actually the voice of reason)......time to boogie on down with the Ted Stevens ("It's A Series Of Tubes") techno remix (and by the way, to help Mark Begich to put ol' Ted out to pasture for good, click here; h/t for these first two - but not the Dubya one - to The Daily Kos)......and MSNBC videos have been giving me fits all week, but I'm going to try again (stubborn, I guess); here's K.O.'s "Worst" from yesterday (Issa threatened Henry Waxman once too, remember - what a reptile)....and here's on...

Don?t know exactly what to do with this stuff, so here it is (turned out to be a bigger post than I thought)?Editor and Publisher reports here that arrests have finally taken place in the murder of Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya in October 2006 (a prior post is here)?Three men were charged with involvement in Politkovskaya's murder while an officer from the Federal Security Service, the FSB, faces charges of extortion and abuse of office, the Investigative Committee said in a statement. The four have been held since their arrests last August.Politkovskaya, 48, was shot to death in her central Moscow apartment building in October 2006. Colleagues believe her murder was linked to her work reporting on abuses by Russian troops in Chechnya. One of the things I never understood in this case is how Russian investigators think anyone would take seriously the claim that Politkovskaya?s murder was ordered by Boris Berezovsky, since both of them were fierce critics of the Kremlin and o...
Wednesday Game Thread; Cubs at Rays, 7:10 p.m. EDT/6:10 CT: No more bunts
2008-06-18 16:00:00
Get us back on track, Big Z So, everyone will have to forgive me these next two days because I'm still a little scatterbrained from vacation. I really still don't know what's going on with the team besides Soriano's broken hand (dammit) and the fact that the Cubs still rule MLB. It's also very hard to wrap my head around the fact Jim Edmonds hit a game-tying HR in the 9th last week, but I saw video, so it must be true. Anyway, the Cubs look to even up against the Rays tonight after kind of a weird game last night that ended with a Reed Johnson bunt. If nothing else, it gave the Cubs blogosphere something to talk about until tonight's game. And Johnson's interesting choice of at-bat also helped out the crappy return of The WAGGLE, who decided to try something new by striking out twice. Big Z (8-2, 2.98) will take the mound for the Cubs. He looked somewhat recovered from that Gatorade battle (which was another thing humorous to follow in Spanish), giving up two runs in seven in...
Veggie Wednesday: Grow Your Own - III
2008-06-18 11:55:00
My garden is coming along nicely, if a little slowly. We don't get a whole lot of sun in the backyard, but I won't let that deter me from growing what I can. Here are some photos of what's going on out there: This is baby leaf lettuce. I start them out close together, and when it's time to thin them, the baby lettuces are the perfect size to harvest and eat. I let the rest stay in the ground until they're big enough to pick. Zucchini plants doing well. I'm hoping the earwigs leave it alone this year. Parsley on the upward climb. I can't wait for this to really get going. A brand new green bean. These have come a long way since that first week! While I'm out checking on the garden and minding my own business, this furry little guy starts chattering away at me and seeming very annoyed that I'm anywhere near his home. He just needs to stay away from my greens.

Dumbass Cliffy wants a Cubs-Rays World Series Stranger things have happened, but none since Jesus walked on water. From the Trib: "Cubs-Rays in the World Series? I think it could be, I really do," Floyd said. "I don't think we lack in anything other than getting some guys healthy. We're catching the ball, pitching the ball, hitting when we need to ... and everything else falls into place. "But you know how baseball is. Funny game. One good stretch here, then one bad stretch and you're back to wondering what the heck is going to happen." If Tuesday night's game was any indication, a Cubs-Rays Series would be interesting to say the least. Evan Longoria's first-pitch home run off Neal Cotts gave Tampa Bay the lead in the sixth, and Rays closer Troy Percival survived a ninth-inning rally to post his 16th save, stranding the tying run on third. After Mark DeRosa singled with one out and pinch-hitter Kosuke Fukudome stroked an opposite-field double to left, the Cubs pulled to within...

KAPOW! Cubs make it interesting, pull away Featuring a great Scott Eyre quote. From the Trib: Lee and Geovany Soto homered, Reed Johnson added to his collection of spectacular catches and Ted Lilly (6-5) overcame a three-run first inning to earn his fifth victory in his last six decisions. The Cubs won their ninth straight at Wrigley Field to improve to 27-8, their best start at home since 1907, when they won their first World Series and played at the West Side Grounds. After taking a 6-3 lead into the seventh, Bob Howry gave up two runs on four hits. Piniella called on Scott Eyre with two out and two on. "I didn't even know who I faced," Eyre said. "By the time I got to the mound, Geo was talking to [ Aramis Ramirez] when I go, 'Hey, who are we facing here?' He goes, '[Ruben] Gotay.' But it wasn't Gotay. He came up the next inning. I don't know who I faced. I wasn't paying attention. I was trying to make sure I got an out." The mystery man was Gregor Blanco, who struck out...

Veggie Wednesday: How to Cook Everything Vegetarian
2008-06-11 08:30:00
Have you seen Mark Bittman's newest tome? This thing, like all his previous works, is huge. How to Cook Everything Vegetarian is 996 pages of every little thing you would ever possibly need to know about vegetarian cooking - and then some.In his usual casual and non-preachy style, Mark Bittman shares the basic, the not-so-basic and everything else in this fabulous all-you'll-ever-need-to-cook-ve-getarian resource. It's not wordy, fluffy or filled up with extras; just straightforward and honest. There aren't any full-color photos, but rather simple and effective line drawings placed throughout the book to help demonstrate techniques. I know it's hard to believe such a large book could in any way be simple, but it is. It's not more than you need to know, and certainly not less. Oh, and the recipes? Delicious; as expected. In summation, just two words: Get it.

Wednesday night roundup

BY ADAM RONIS Can you believe that Mike Mussina leads the Yankees in wins? That would be understandable if it was three wins, but it's nine. He went six innings and allowed five hits, one run, one walk and struck out six. He is 9-4 with a 4.01 ERA. He has issued just 11 walks, which is part of the reason for success. He has been fortunate to face a lot of offenses that are slumping when he faces them. I would sell high or spot start him. Brett Myers took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, but lost it on a two-out double by Joey Votto that gave the Reds a 1-0 lead. In my Sunday column, I said Myers is an excellent buy-low candidate, especially for a team at the bottom of the standings that needs to take a chance. He has now had two consecutive excellent starts. He did walk six, however, but he allowed just one hit, one run and struck out eight in 7 1/3 innings to take the loss. Edinson Volquez was just a bit better. He threw seven scoreless innings, allowing two hits, two walks an...

Kevin Gregg pitched a scoreless ninth for his 11th save. Manny Acosta blew his second save of the season by allowing four hirs and four runs in 1/3 inning. He is 3-3 with a 3.90 ERA. Rafael Soriano pitched the last two days and is the favorite to for saves. Justin Duchscherer didn't have his best control with five walks, but he went 6 2/3 innings and allowed three hits, two runs and struck out three to get the win. He is 5-4 with a 2.32 ERA. He has pitched well with a 38/15 K/BB ratio and should be owned in mixed leagues. The Brewers offense is starting to get going which is good news for fantasy owners that spent on several of their players. Corey Hart went 2-for-4 with his seventh homer -- an inside-the-park-- and four RBIs. He has 32 and is batting .290 with 10 steals. Russell Branyan hit his fourth homer and should be owned in...

I worry that someone will break a hip doing one of these. Cubs win despite Marquis They're unstoppable! From the Daily Herald: Lou Piniella strode slowly, but purposefully, to the pitcher's mound. It was time for one of the Cubs manager's "nice chats," this time with starting pitcher Jason Marquis. The situation was this: The Cubs had just scored a run in the top of the fourth inning, cutting the San Diego Padres' lead to 2-1. Marquis, who had trouble finding the plate in the third, just walked Paul McAnulty leading off the home fourth. Piniella said his piece -- not all of it fit for family lip readers -- and Marquis did give up a run that inning, but he seemed to settle down for the rest of his short time on the mound. True to recent form, the Cubs rallied to defeat the Padres 9-6 for their ninth straight victory. Geovany Soto broke a 3-3 tie with a solo homer in the sixth. Mark DeRosa hit a 2-run homer later that inning, and Alfonso Soriano crushed a 3-run homer in the eigh...

2008-06-03 07:09:00
John Abraham changed course from an actor to a singer on Wednesday, May 28, when he performed live in Bandstand, Bandra, in the Western suburb of Mumbai. The actor sang the song, Ab Hai Ujala, from his latest film, Aashayein, as the crowds cheered and girls were absolutely delighted.?It was simply crazy. I think we underestimated John’s pull and his pursuit of excellence. I thought he’d come on stage croon a few lines, shake his hips in tight trousers, blow kisses and melt into the night. No way,? told Elahi Hiptoolah, executive producer of Aashayein.John left the audiences spellbound after his performance, also, the director Nagesh Kukunoor joined him when audience compelled John to sing once more. ?We hadn’t planned a big music launch and we certainly had no clue there was another music launch the same evening. We just wanted to do something different. So we thought of making all the singers including John perform their tracks from Aashayein live on stage. We nev...

In this class, we offer a gustatory map of the major wine regions. From Apulia, to Chianti, to the Piedmont, this class offers an overview of the important regions. Just as importantly, this class will highlight some of the wine regions with the best quality-to-price ratios. And, of course, you'll taste fantastic examples from each of them.

BY ADAM RONIS With the Rockies decimated by injuries right now, third baseman Ian Stewart was moved to second base today. He is a short-term option in NL-only leagues while playing. There was speculation that Shane Victorino might see less playing time after coming off the DL due to the emergence of Jayson Werth. I never believed it and with Werth on the DL, Victorino is securing his job. He has an 11-game hitting streak and went 3-for-4 with two runs and a walk to go along with two steals. He has 12 stolen bases for the season. Believe it or not, Chase Utley was in a slump for a good portion of May. It's over. He hit his 17th homer and has 46 RBIs with a .310 average. If Utley was in a slump, what do we call Carlos Delgado's season? How bad are things going for the Rockies? They gave Adam Eaton his first win of the season. Johnny Peralta hit his 11th homer, but has just 19 RBIs and a .225 average. Gavin Floyd improved to 5-3 with a 3.22 ERA. He allowed eight hits, four earned run...
