Welcome to Part 1 of a special edition of Wednesday’s Wide World of Waivers (Tom will be here with Part 2 next week). With the 2009 season nearly over, it’s got to the point where it’s highly unlikely that any last minute waiver pick-ups will make a significant difference to your team, with the possible ...

The Department of Housing and Urban Development is starting a huge public housing study, assessing the condition of the nation's public housing and what it would cost to bring all the units into good physical condition. Sorely overdue, leaders say. Atlanta is seeing a rise in crime. But the Atlanta Journal Constitution says it's not as bad as it once was, especially considering they've demolished all their public housing. Crime rates at those developments was once 37 times the national average. Still, the rise in city wide crime makes me wonder if they're undergoing what happened to Memphis. Mark Ishaug, head of the AIDS Foundation of Chicago, wrote a great editorial for the Trib on the connection between homelessness and...

When mythical TV families have Thanksgiving dinner, and before they eat, they go around and each say what they're thankful for. In reality, everyone's too hungry to wait for that chicanery, but today I'll pretend like I'm on a TV show and say what I'm thankful for regarding the Cubs. First up, I'm thankful for Derrek Lee, since July 1:The Cubs won their third straight since suspending Milton Bradley for the season and Lee has continued his sizzling September. He's hitting .408 for the month and is 6 of 8 in this series with two home runs and six RBIs. Lee has 10 homers in his last 20 games and leads the majors with 24 since July 1.I'm also thankful...

Wednesday Random Song: "Brighten the Corner Where You Are"
2009-09-16 23:41:00
Ina Duley Ogdon was a Midwestern wife and mother and Sunday School teacher during the early 20th century. Ogdon had ambitions of becoming a preacher but family responsibilities intervened. Her poem "Brighten the Corner Where You Are" was written in 1912 while she was caring for her sick father. Set to music by Charles H. Gabriel, the tune became a nationwide hit after evangelist Billy Sunday made it a staple of his revival meetings. I first heard it this week on Enlighten 34, the Southern gospel station on XM Radio, in a lively rendition by The Statesmen which I wasn't able to find on YouTube. (It's featured on this album.) Instead, enjoy this old-school version by the Criterion Quartet: This interesting 10-minute video tells the story of Ina's life and the inspiration for the song, as well as its subsequent cultural reception. 1. Do not wait until some deed of greatness you may do, Do not wait to shed your light afar; To the many duties ever near you now b...

There will be no more words wasted on this site about the Chicago media's current infatuation with Jay Cutler's facial expressions.  Writers like the Tribune's Rick Morrissey are why most people around the country have little respect for the town's sports writers.  Morrissey, like Mariotti before him, think dour is interesting and prey upon the local fan's propensity to be pessimistic.  In my opinion, it's cheap journalism.  And unsurprising.Bowman Was Healthy?According to Vaughn McClure, Zack Bowman was entirely healthy Sunday night and doesn't seem to have any idea why he didn't play down the stretch.  About the only positive thing that came out of the last two minutes at Lambeau Field is the fact that the entire organization should now...

Chicago Cubs Headlines for Wednesday
2009-09-16 11:53:00
It's never easy, is it?The Cubs won again, that's 8 out of 9. And they spanked the Brewers, 13-7. Derrek Lee got his 100th RBI, Geo Soto hit a home run and the offense drew 12 walks. But of course, the story isn't about any of that, it's about Big Z. Zambrano found himself staked to a 4-0 lead by the fourth inning, but he couldn't hold it. The offense rescued him, and the Cubs went on to a 13-7 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers at Wrigley Field. He threw 39 of his 103 pitches in the fifth inning as the Brewers sent 10 men to the plate and scored 5 runs after two outs....

Had Tom Ricketts been in Pittsburgh, this is what he would've been doingLast night's game was over pretty early, thanks to a spectacular array of Cubs hitting:The games may be meaningless now, but Ryan Theriot, Milton Bradley, Derrek Lee, Aramis Ramirez, Jeff Baker, Geovany Soto, Kosuke Fukudome and Bobby Scales contributed to a part of baseball history with their all-out assault on Pirates left-hander Zach Duke. Three of the hits never left the infield, and two others barely skipped past Pirates infielders.Okay, I guess you might say good hitting and good luck combined to help the Cubs last night. But they cemented their offense as the best, as no other MLB team has accomplished that feat this year, or any...

Omiyale Wins Starting Guard JobAccording to Brad Biggs, Josh Beekman's run atop the depth chart at left guard has come to an end and Frank Omiyale will start against the New York Giants Saturday night.  I can't applaud the timing of this move more.  The Giants' defensive line is the best the team will face all season and it's imperative to have the projected starters out there against Osi, Tuck and company. The real question is...are there any competitions ongoing this summer?  With the corners solidified (and injured) and the offensive line structured, are we only awaiting the announcement that Pisa has defeated Jamar on the strong side?Jerry Finds the ProblemWhen asked by Larry Mayer to evaluate the defensive performance against...

You probably woke up this morning expecting that the Cubs made a big comeback after you went to bed last night. Oh, wait, you didn't expect that? Well that's good, because they didn't make a comeback. I guess the picture of sad Lou may have clued you in on that. At least the Cards lost, too.The Cubs' 6-3 loss to the NL West-trailing San Diego Padres on Tuesday night at a ballpark that has become an offensive wasteland for them sent them reeling to their ninth loss in 12 games.
