Hossa plays next week...Western Conference collectively wets self
2009-11-19 03:50:00 It looks like the Hawks big offseason prize, winger Marian Hossa, is set to make his Blackhawks debut next week. Hossa is targeting next Wednesday in San Jose for his return, but it may be more likely that he plays next Friday in Anaheim or Saturday in Los Angeles. My hockey chubby is awakening. Visions of Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews, and Hossa skating on a line together makes my knees weak. I can see Willie Mitchell from Vancouver breaking his stick in frustration as another goal slips past Greasy Bob Luongo. Picture it...a shootout in Detroit. The toothless, mulleted Red Wings fans standing and booing as the Hawks blonde haired sniper heads to the net, and buries the puck...
Hamlett to meet with Fire Bosses Later this Week
2009-11-18 06:53:00 The Fire's front office brass and Denis Hamlett are scheduled to have a sit-down in the next couple of days to discuss the Head Coach's future at the club. "We're supposed to have a meeting in the next couple of days," Hamlett said on Tuesday afternoon. "We spoke yesterday and decided that we want to sit down and have a discussion." Hamlett wouldn't specify exactly who the "we" in the above quote included but it's probably a safe bet to think that Javier Leon (the Managing Director of Andell Sports Group - which owns the Fire), Technical Director Frank Klopas and possibly even Owner Andrew Hauptman will sit in on the meeting. Hamlett told me that he doesn't know...

2814 N. Sheffield: Open House of the week
2009-11-15 22:34:00 The new construction units at 2814 N. Sheffield offer a variety of floorplans near the L in a nice neighborhood in south Lakeview. Some of the units are up to $750,000, but the one I toured on the second floor south end of the building was a three-bedroom, two-bath for $549,000. You enter the unit through the front stairs, which open into a wide living/dining area and spacious kitchen With dark hardwood floors throughout, the bright light coming in from the south windows give a nice coloring to the unit, which is being marketed by Sudler Sotheby's Tracy Romano. The kitchen has granite countertops and includes stainless steel appliances with a dishwasher and wine cooler. The unit also comes with a...

Google Chrome OS Download Could Be Just A Week Away!
2009-11-13 13:12:00 If Michael Arrington of TechCrunch has his sources in place, it seems likely that the much talked about Google Chrome OS could be available for download in a week. Yes, that’s right a week! Ever since the project was announced in July, experts have debated what Google’s ‘New Era’ OS would be like. There have been ‘alleged’ screenshots and even ‘fake’ torrents doing the rounds on the internet. The wait could be over, there is a catch however. Only those with supported devices will be able to use this version. The company had announced earlier that it is working with the likes of Acer, HP, Freescale, Adobe, Qualcomm, ASUS, Texas Instruments and Toshiba. There is also concern over the availability of hardware drivers as it is believed that Google is leaving that task to the hardware manufacturers. Chrome OS is expected to rely heavily on web apps for most of its functioning, a kind of ’switch-on OS’ instead of the ‘bo...

Latino Fashion Week Delights a Fashionable Crowd
2009-11-13 03:58:00 Design by James de Colon for the finale of Latino Fashion Week Sunday night. Latino Fashion Week was a great success in large part due to the efforts by Arabel Rosales, Managing Producer, and her wonderful team of supporters. The week was packed with events beginning with the Hair and Make-Up Wars on Monday where the winner was Salon Salome who put an edge to their talents by incorporating body paint into the mix. Tuesday was the student designer competition where they were all winners but, in the end, Arianna Magana pulled ahead to win first place. ...

Why Do I Like the Chicago Bears This Week?
2009-11-12 04:25:00 Because I always like the Chicago Bears.Only one note on this game. The news that Tommie Harris will not be suspended by the league against the 49ers will make this entire ballgame about him. When he places his hand on the ground, he puts his reputation right beside Lovie Smith's: on the firing line.Chicago Bears 40, San Francisco 49ers 38...

Shoe of The Week: Nike Trainer 1 Manny Pacquiao Part III
2009-11-09 03:31:00 I've been a fan of this series of shoes from Nike. Past versions have been featured here in the past and this version's lovely also. Don't know much about Pacquiao honestly, but damn does Nike know how to make his shoes. These are expected to be released around the time of Pacquiao's next match. Kix and the City predicts that they'll be a limited edition, which is too bad. I'd like them to be a full on release. They are that nice.Keep your eyes out for these and tell me what shoes have recently caught your eyes in the comments.
1000 W. Washington: Showing of the week
2009-11-08 22:55:00 Let me start off by saying, I attempted to attend TWO other open houses this week, but could not find the entrance or a number to call to get in... I'm wondering if the Realtors just bounced because it was such a nice weekend. In the end, though, I'm happy I got the chance to see the one-bedroom unit at 1000 W. Washington. The 1,700 square foot loft was much different from many north side properties I've seen and offered a lot of open space, and perhaps even the possibility for a second bedroom. As is somewhat visible in this picture, the unit has two levels separated by three steps- the kitchen and dining area are sunk in while the...
Ten by Ten Week Ten Picks with Guest Pick Tyler Kelly: The Big One in Happy
2009-11-07 14:33:00 Hard to believe it, but Week Ten of the college football season is here. This week in the Big Ten there are several interesting match-ups. Iowa will continue its quest for an undefeated season when the Hawkeyes welcome Northwestern to Kinnick Stadium; The Badgers play a desperate Indiana team that could be dangerous if it could ever put a whole game together; Michigan will hope to rebound against the sputtering Boilermakers in the Big House; The Gophers and the Illini will meet in a battle of dueling momentum; The Spartans get a "breather" against MAC foe Western Michigan. And those are the noon games! Thanks Big Ten for making it easy to catch all the games! Then there is the big one....

West Loop lounge Meze opens next week
2009-11-05 20:52:00 In the past year or so, Club Royale in the West Loop opened, closed, opened again and closed again (and maybe more -- we lost count after that). Here comes Meze, a sangria and tapas lounge taking its place at 205 N. Peoria St., and we hope this one sticks around for longer. From what we've heard so far, it has one thing going for it: value. We like what we're hearing as far as prices go: $5 a glass for sangria (red and white, plus a seasonally changing specialty such as a cider-spiked recipe for the cooler months), plus cheap specials on pitchers in the plans for Friday nights. Though the name refers to the Greek style of tapas-like snacks, the...

Mid-Week Update: Game 1 Reaction
2009-11-04 21:14:00 Hey everyone, I just got off the phone with Fire Head Coach Denis Hamlett and I got quite a bit of reaction to the 2-1 Game 1 loss to the New England Revolution. A lot of the quotes are same old, same old from Denis (funny how that happens when the team struggles with the same problems over and over again...) but all the same I thought I would share it with you guys. So, without any further ado, here's Hamlett's take on Sunday's 2-1 loss to the Revolution. Overall Reaction: "I think for stretches in that game we played well," said Hamlett. "We made some mental mistakes which I think cost us the game but I think all...

No pushover for the Bears this week. The Prof's analysis of Sunday&apo
2009-11-04 03:55:00 This figures to be a close game, which means turnovers could very well be the deciding factor. Both teams are 4-0 when they DON'T LOSE the turnover battle, and 0-3 when they DO. Both teams are -4 in interception differential, but in giveaways/takeaways, the Bears are -1, with Arizona -6. Kurt Warner turned it over 6 times in Sunday's loss to Carolina. Both teams are pretty one dimensional, but in Arizona's case, its more by choice. Their short passes to running backs are tantamount to running plays. Tim Hightower has 39 catches, which is the most by any running back in the NFL. Arizona has three wideouts among the top 33 receivers in the NFL in terms of total yardage. Larry Fitzgerald...

What We Spent Our $80 Grocery Budget on This Week: Organics at Trader Joe&a
2009-11-03 19:51:00 I spent $80 there on my usual TJs staples, like organic peanut butter, organic potatoes, carrots and celery, organic fruit (apples and pears this time), hummus, whole-wheat cous cous, wild salmon (I usually buy the cheaper silverbrite and cook it in a curry dish to compensate for the blander taste) and wine. I also got two organic chickens at $2.79 a pound, some nitrate-free ham for Nutmeg's lunches, and one jar of simmer sauce for an easy dinner (probably with that silverbrite salmon).

Stupidiest Headline of the Week
2009-11-01 21:00:00 I'm not the best at making headlines, literally or figuritivly, but there are some just stupid headlines out there. For example, my boyfriend sent me the following link as a perfect example of a Headline that sensationlizes everything, yet nothing at all. This weeks winner, in fact the first winner ever, comes from the Daily Mail Online - which typically has great articles and headlines - just made me scratch my head. Fifteen students left with permanent scars after branding each other with heated coathangers It's not so much even that it's a long headline, but it also tells you exactly what happened without having to read the story. My question though is, what did they think was going to happen.....non-permanent...
2630 N. Mildred: Open House of the week
2009-10-31 21:07:00 Listed at about triple the cost of last week's open house, this condo felt like a whole house. The three-bedroom, three-bath duplex down is listed at $549,000 and occupies the basement and first floor of the three-story building. There's a living room on the first floor and a family room in the basement, two bedrooms and two baths on the first floor and another bedroom, bathroom and laundry room in the basement. The kitchen is on the first floor and includes stainless steel appliances. Paula Rosenfeld of Baird and Warner was showing off the property, and said she liked the crown molding that adds a touch of class to the seven year old building. There's a back deck accessible from...

Travel Deal of the Week: Cheap Fares on Southwest
2009-10-27 14:45:00 Drewski2112 via Flickr I'm a huge fan of Southwest Airlines. I like the 'no assigned seating' policy. I like that they don't charge for checked bags (even though I always carry on). I like that they even give you snacks. Snacks! Who does that anymore? But of course, what I really love about Southwest is that they always seen to have a great sale going on. The current sale is no exception. Buy your tickets by 9:59 pm central time on October 29th to score tickets from Chicago to dozens of city at dirt cheap prices like these listed below. $25 EACH WAYMinneapolis, Detroit, St. Louis, Columbus, Louisville, Indianapolis or Cleveland $50 EACH WAYBuffalo, Kansas City, Nashville, Little Rock, Omaha,...
519 W. Melrose: Showing of the week
2009-10-25 20:45:00 This week, I decided to try finding a showing that I could actually afford. I'm less than halfway through what I consider to be saving up for a down payment, but with the $8,000 tax credit and on my current salary, my monthly mortgage payments would be less than my rent on this junior one-bedroom in northeast Lakeview. The $194,000 unit might be a good starter, if you think you'll be able to re-sell it later The best thing about the apartment is the finishes: refurbished in 2006, it has a great but small modern kitchen with an electric stove, stainless steel fridge and quality dark cabinet. It opens up into a moderately sized living room with a large window...
Wolves douse Heat 7-1; Expect the first of several call-ups this week
2009-10-25 07:30:00 ROSEMONT, ILL--- The Chicago Wolves have kept opponents limited to just one goal in 125 minutes of play this weekend. Compare that to the 23 goals scored against the team in the other six games played this season. A 7-1 win over the Heat. Sweet. The Wolves came out of the darkness, perhaps led by 47 year-old Chris Chelios or perhaps by the shock of having a new coach. It was a three point weekend, more points than the team has gained the rest of the season combined. And there were moments of brilliance too, on the part of Abbotsford, that the defense of the Wolves crushed. This is the weekend when the depth of the team seemed to be...

Pullman, bottom-out in this week's Chicago real estate news

According to Crain's, the non-profit arm of a local banker is proposing a new home site at 720 E. 111th, pending zoning approval. -Housing prices should hit rock bottom in March 2010 and start bouncing back up Bloomberg News reports that prices will drop 37 percent from their peak total, and after winter is over we will start to see some more action on the home-buying front. - Messages from Montie says Urban Equities saved her from Chicago real estate nightmares: Fellow ChicagoNow-er says she's been through bad real estate, but this landlord doesn't have that...

Travel Deal of the Week: Half Off Flights to Poland!
2009-10-23 14:00:00 Krakow (Smif via Flickr) I already posted some great flight deals from Chicago yesterday, but in my opinion, there's so no such thing as too many cheap flights. So here's another deal, and this one is pretty amazing. For the next 40 or so hours, all flights on Polish carrier LOT Airlines are half off. Yes, half off. All flights. Flights to destinations in Poland, like Warsaw and Krakow, are half off. Flights to Amsterdam, Prague, Zurich, Moscow, Munich, and every other destination the airline flies are all half off. Base prices are shockingly low - around $300 round trip - but of course the taxes and fees will add up. Most flights that I checked came out to...

Not a good week for former Bulls
2009-10-23 07:06:00 My two favourite days in the NBA calendar; draft night and media day. Draft night is incomparably excellent. In one short five hour period - all of which is televised - the entire NBA landscape can change for years to come. There's transactions galore, discussion aplenty, bad jokes all over the place, and multiple opportunities to judge people on their clothing choices and interview techniques, while simultaneously actually learning something about the new players. Media day offers hot two pronged action; not only do we get to laugh at photos of players palming basketballs and scowling, but we're also introduced to the training camp signings, a delicious annual ritual that shows us fans what's on the minds of NBA executives....
Travel Deal of the Week: Last Minute Cheap Flights in November
2009-10-22 20:00:00 It's the end of the year, and if you are like many of my co-workers, you have a pretty big stash of vacation time left over. November is the time to use it, particularly if you are looking at international destinations. Not many people travel in the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving or in the time between that holiday and Christmas, which means its fairly easy to find a great deal. For instance, in two weeks, flights on Spirit Airlines from Chicago to Honduras are just $350 per person (they are closer to $700 each in spring). Flights from Chicago to Tokyo on US Airways are just $638 (they go up to $1600 the following week!). Flights to Istanbul are...
This movie will mess you up--and other thoughts on the week's new film
2009-10-22 18:32:00 You may have heard some people saying that Lars von Trier's "Antichrist" will shake you up and leave you both stunned and eager to discuss what you just saw. Well, whoever you've been listening to is right. The film has moments that you probably won't be able to watch, and issues about men, women, tragedy and grief that can be hard to take and unpack. But the movie's also oddly beautiful and challenging and fearless, and I dare anyone to see it and not come out with a strong reaction and a lot to say.You should also come out buzzing after "An Education," both because the film is so witty and appealing and smart and because Carey Mulligan, in a role...

Shoe of The Week: Nike Zoom Skyposite Yi Jianlian PE
2009-10-19 03:31:00 For the most part, I haven't been impressed with the Nike Zoom Skyposite PE's. The ugly Amar'e version comes to mind, but Nike got it right with this colorway. Though I might question whether Yi has come into his own enough to get his own shoes, I gotta say these are nice. Some info on the avaliability of these from Kix and the City:No specific release date yet but, expect them to hit select retailers, like the House of Hoops, in time for the upcoming 2009/2010 NBA season. That's kind of a bummer, but hey, if you really wanna go out and get these now you know. Got a message to Yi from Nets fans: now that you've got your own personalized Nike's, play like you should get a signature shoe!
1854 N. Lincoln: Open House of the week
2009-10-17 21:41:00 Jennifer Vogel of Sudler-Sotheby's showed me around the one-bedroom, one-bath unit at 1854 N. Lincoln Ave. this afternoon. The unit is only about 850 square feet, but with its open floorplan it has room for surprisingly large furniture and a cozy feel. The unit was gut rehabbed about 2 years ago and includes very high end kitchen finishes, like a stove imported from Italy and a Bosch dishwasher. The kitchen space is small, but efficient. The bedroom has enough space for a queen bed plus an interested above-closet storage area near the 11 foot ceiling. The bathroom is small but also well finished, still keeping with the historic character. Other amenties include a shared outdoor deck and a... |
