Holiday Train to spread good cheer starting this weekend on Red and Purple
2009-11-19 02:00:00
It's back! The long-awaited Holiday Train will thrill passengers young, old and in between starting around noon Saturday at the Howard station, heading south on the Red Line. The detailed schedule for Saturday is here; Sunday's schedule is here. The general schedule is here. The Holiday Train is made up of six heavily decorated train cars, with Santa sitting in the middle on a flat-bed car. It will traverse all eight rail lines between Nov. 21 and Dec. 23. After all, Santa really has to get to work on Dec. 24.It really is a sight to behold. It's especially cool to watch the faces of those who don't know it's coming. Usually folks on the opposite platform cheer for Santa and...

Weekend Sale Previews: A Collection of Estate Sales
2009-11-13 05:13:00
Is the town of Waukegan also known as the Home of the Collector?  Two sales there within half a mile of each pose the question:  why have one when you can have fifty? I took a trip up north to preview the sales for this weekend, November 13 -15.  The first sale at 405 W. Glen Flora, Waukegan Hours: Friday 10-4, Saturday 11-6 and Sunday 11-3In the small house, it's evident by the odor that an elderly person has lived there for some time. Per the sale conductor, the owner was a random collector who bought indiscriminately.  Dozens of lamps, so much TJMaxx type art, it was also displayed in the bathtub, dish sets on dish sets, glassware on glassware. ...

Pre-Turkey Day prep and other weekend events
2009-11-06 22:38:00
Don't be fooled by the candy-laden traces of Halloween still lurking around your house. Thanksgiving isn't far off (less than three weeks!), and now's the time to commit to either making the big meal or leaving it to the experts. If you're determined to cook, get yourself into the spirit at the Planning for Holiday Parties class at Wave (644 N. Lake Shore Drive. W Hotel, 312-255-4460). Chef Kristine Subido shows you how to cook a multi-course meal of spiced squash soup, ricotta gnocchi, brioche bread pudding with brown-butter caramel and, of course, oven-roasted turkey tenderloin and stuffing. Sound too overwhelming? Place your order this weekend for a turkey to-go from Smoke Daddy (1804 W. Division St. 773-772-6656), and feed...

Trip Idea: A Food-Lover's Weekend at The Abbey Resort on Lake Geneva,
2009-11-05 16:00:00
I can't recommend The Abbey Resort and Spa, on the shores of Lake Geneva in Wisconsin, enough, especially for those Chicagoans without a car, or passionate foodies looking for a unique weekend. You see, you can take the Metra to the Harvard stop (about 2 hours and $10 from downtown), and then catch a shuttle to the property, which means you can completely escape the city without the aid or expense of a rental car. And The Abbey is the perfect retreat for food lovers, thanks to an innovative culinary program, a from-scratch policy on cooking, and two amazing upcoming events. This weekend, November 6-8 and the following weekend, November 13-15, The Abbey will be hosting its "Great Chefs at the Lake" events....

Talib Kweli collaboration leads a weekend recap of new music
2009-10-26 03:01:00
Strong Arm Steady "Get Started" f/ Talib Kweli Producer: Madlib - FULL, CDQ, 1st Single off upcoming album, Stoney Jackson *Tibs Fav.™Big new music (weekend) update w/ a whole lotta audio and a couple videos 2 boot but we begin with a new collaboration from three artists that have done so just as well in the past - Strong Arm Steady, Talib Kweli, and Madlib. "Get Started" is the 1st single off Strong Arm Steady's upcoming album, Stoney Jackson, and contains some slick verses over a Madlib production that I vibed with right away. In particular, the first and third verses hit me and overall it's a hip hop track that many will enjoy and almost everyone will appreciate.Down below,...
Chicago Steel finish weekend with four points; 4-3 win after Steel explode
2009-10-25 20:04:00
The Chicago Steel came from behind, scoring four unanswered goals to win their sixth game of the season. It capped a three game road trip this weekend in which the Steel took four points. The Steel fell behind 3-0 as the Stampede put 14 shots on goal in the first two periods. On the face-off from the third goal the Steel started to turn the game around, scoring just eight seconds after the Stampede's third goal.Mark Anthoine had two goals, including a short handed game winning goal at 18:42 in the third period. Sisters' Weekend
2009-10-24 20:30:00
I am typing this for a delayed posting, since I am off to Michigan for colors and sisters.  Judy and I are in Chicago, Marie and Jennifer are in Detroit.   We will meet in New Buffalo (not halfway, but a tradition) this weekend for our annual get together.  We failed to merge last Autumn, so we set this weekend in stone last June, and woe be to she who gets the flu,  or any other excuse.  Judy is shaving it close, with her daughter's 13th birthday on Sunday.  It is costing her a girlfriends-style party for Emma, with manicures and such.  I would suspect that Emma will get a few bonus gifts as well, from her Aunties.  The Joliat...
Round One - Weekend Football Picks
2009-10-24 16:06:00
There are some very intriguing games this weekend in both college football and on the NFL schedule. I am really looking forward to watching the rivalry game in South Bend as Notre Dame tries to avoid a letdown after a tough comeback and eventual loss to USC with Boston College rolling into Notre Dame Stadium.Iowa is undefeated and after a 2nd half comeback on the road at Wisconsin they are starting to make believers out of those that have doubted their staying power. However, another tough game is up next with a night time battle at Michigan State much tougher than most would expect. I will have more games for you as the weekend unfolds. Have fun and enjoy! Kid Sister sets the mood for the weekend with 'Kill The Noise' re
2009-10-24 00:57:00
Kid Sister "Right Hand Hi (Kill The Noise RMX)" FULL, CDQ *Tibs Fav.™Get in the mood for your Friday nite with this one as Chicago's Kid Sister gets 'Kill The Noise' remix treatment for "Right Hand Hi" (spotted @ iLLVibes). It's ideal for the weekend as you'll notice the uptempo dance music right away. Lyrically it's not the deepest track but it succeeds in gettin' you hyped up for an evening out or for a late night of work. In fact, I turn 2 songs in this genre for a change of pace during the wee hours of the morning. Kid Sister, best known for "Pro Nails" f/ Kanye West, in general is a pretty unique artist who last I...
Revenge of the Apartment Gallery Weekend
2009-10-23 18:25:00
These are my picks for tonight, but there's lots more on Saturday I'll miss out on. Namely Zygman Voss with writing on the wall, which is always my thing.   But the flashing headline is that if you're an apartment gallery hopper, holy crap, Stephanie Burke thinks they've all formed a consortium: Burke's Roundup: Concertina Gallery  Noble & Superior ProjectsBarbara & Barbara Home GalleryMVSEVMsecondBEDROOM medicine cabinetGolden (a closing)  She's going to try to hit all of them. Weekend work on Blue, Red, Brown lines mess things up a bit
2009-10-23 12:50:00
Slow zone work continues on the Blue Line this weekend, with shuttle buses connecting stations closed between Clark/Lake and UIC-Halsted from 10 pm Friday till 4 am Monday. On the Brown and Red lines, work continues to finish the Fullerton and Belmont station platforms. All trains will board on the east platform. Last weekend crews were installing the new canopy roofs on the west platform. I was talking last week with Tattler Pub Crawl friends about whether the CTA would finish both station by the Dec. 31 deadline. I reminded them that the CTA has never missed a deadline on this Brown Line expansion project. So, we'll see how that goes....
Wolves Drop Two in Long Weekend of losses.
2009-10-18 23:21:00
Friday night the Chicago Wolves lost in Rockford to the IceHogs in a 4:1 physical contest. Although the Wolves seemed to keep up with the always hard hitting Hogs they never played at the same level or intensity as their closest rival. It was to be the start of a long weekend.Rockfords's Brian Connley and Mark Cullen box up Nathan Oystrick of the  Chicago Wolves during Friday nights physical play....

Bluebird Salon Series + more weekend picks
2009-10-16 23:35:00
Who says art talks and food-and-wine dinners need to be stiff and intimidating? Not us. And not Bluebird owner Tom MacDonald, who launches the first Bluebird Salon Series on Sunday (7 p.m.). Pairing family-style food with a post-meal discussion driven by featured local artists, this four-week series looks to create a casual public dinner party. On Sunday, Chi artists Mary Livoni and John Coyle Steinbrunner show their work under the theme "Picture This Like This: Depicting a World in Recession." Snack on flatbreads while viewing their art, then sit down for a meal of cheddar mac 'n' cheese; grilled, brined and smoked pork chops; and pan-seared whitefish. After dinner, the artists discuss their work and open the floor for a Q&A....
Top Ten Chicago Sports Events This Weekend
2009-10-16 12:28:00
The beauty of being a Chicagoan or one of its neighboring suburbanites is the plethora of sporting events that seemingly take place every single weekend. After taking a look around the Chicago sports landscape and seeing what's in store for us starting tonight, it's become obvious to me that my mountainous laundry pile will have to wait another week. So to help you keep track of what's going on, here are the Top Ten Events in Chicago Sports This Weekend.10. Illinois vs. IndianaSaturday - 6 p.m.According to the rules set forth by the NCAA, one of these two teams actually has to win this game even though neither really even deserve it. Recensie: Calvin Harris - Ready for the Weekend
2009-10-13 11:51:00
Weekend Birding ? Black Storks
2009-10-12 11:17:00
Black Stork (Ciconia nigra) — A scarce passage migrant in Cyprus, it is generally seen in single figures in late April/early May and from September to November. I was lucky to see seven this past Saturday on the Akrotiri Salt Flats, and four of them again a while later, probably the same birds. Seeing seven ...

Suze Orman Money-Saving Tips from Weekend Update
2009-10-10 05:29:00
This video clip of money-saving tips from "Suze Orman" on last Thursday's Saturday Night Live Weekend Update is cracking me up. Some of the funny tips are not that far from things that have actually been recommended to me. Maybe even by me! You know frugal has made the big time when it's skewered on SNL. My favorite line: "Because of a complete lack of roughage, we saved money on our water bill by not going to the bathroom." She forgot to mention all she saved on toilet paper!...
Weekend Gardening Chores
2009-10-09 23:42:00
Like always I'm waiting until it is really late in the season to start on my fall gardening chores. This weekend I plan to tackle several of them and get them out of the way. Today I'm bringing in my houseplants that are still outside, if you live in an outlying suburb of Chicago there is a frost warning, get your houseplants in before they are killed by the frost. The last of my peppers have been harvested today and with great sadness I've tossed the plants in the compost pile even though many of them are trying to set fruit and grow new leaves. Times like this that I wish I had a greenhouse or more precious window space. I'm...
Trip Idea: A Long Weekend in Denver
2009-10-09 19:45:00
Scott Ingram Photography via Flickr Did you know that the flight from Chicago to Denver is only 2.5 hours long? On the way back, it's closer 2 hours flat, making it an easy jaunt for a long weekend. Southwest, United, and Frontier operate dozens of low-cost flights between the two cities each day, with prices ranging from $180 to $250 per person. Drinking and dining is relatively cheap and mid-priced hotels average $130 per night so it's a trip you can pull off on even a smaller budget. If you only have the weekend, concentrate your time in just Denver or Boulder. If you can stretch your vactation to 3 or 4 days, it's worth getting out of the city to explore....

Bye Weekend Thoughts and THE PICKS!
2009-10-09 11:01:00
Dan Pompei's love letter to recent draft classes feels a little premature.  I'm a big fan of Jerry Angelo but let's see more than four games before we start believing statements like, "Before camp started, the Bears didn't know if they could count on Afalava, Bowman, [Kellen] Davis, Knox, Bennett and [Chris] Williams. Now they don't know if they could keep winning without them."  I'm not saying the ability of all these young guys doesn't bode well for the future of the organization.  I'm just not ready to raise the 2009 championship banner yet.Courageously, Mike Martz waited until three consecutive terrific performances to apologize for his silly comments that followed Jay Cutler's week one press conference.  I'm not going to...
Top Ten Storylines for the Upcoming Weekend in Big Ten Football

Easter Weekend
2009-09-22 23:21:00
We're just wrapping up a great four day weekend down here in Australia - hmm, four days. Yan-Shih and I had an eventful few days. Day 1 - Thursday night we went up to the Blue Mountains and stayed with a few friends. I've always enjoyed going up there - it reminds me how much I like mountain terrain. We meandered back down to Sydney on Friday and started contemplating what to do with the rest of the weekend. Day 2 - Saturday we woke up early and drove to the local supermarket, bought some food for the week (the markets would be closed on Friday and Sunday), and drove back home. Quickly after arriving home we turned the car around and headed out to Kangaroo Valley, about two hours South of our house. The drive was quite lovely, and traffic was light. We arrived at the campsite and were stunned by how large it was - there could be several thousand campers there. After driving around and locating the ideal spot, so we thought, we tossed out the tend and setup camp. There wasn...

British Sports Cars and American Hot Rods Travel to VT This Weekend
2009-09-16 17:08:00
I just posted a few photos from the 2007 British Invasion on Flickr to give you a small sampling of what this car show is about. As mentioned in my September 6 blog entry below, there will be hundreds of beautiful British cars from old to new. The British Invasion web site has more details. My friends from the Classic Bike Experience will be there as well to display some British Motorcycles. The Boston Sunday Globe named this event as their number one choice for "Best 10 things to do within a day's drive of Boston." And the Vermont Chamber of Commerce has named it several years in a row as a Top Ten Event in Vermont. The event will be held at the Stowe Events Field on Weeks Hill Road, just off Route 108. It runs this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. On the same weekend, there's a very large street rod show at the Champlain Expo Center put on by the National Street Rod Association. White Sox Weekend: Hope Rollercoaster
2009-09-14 06:39:00
Due to their .500 record and time running out, the White Sox need wins, regardless of the quality of their opponent. Even going into a weekend where they're facing one of the AL's best (Angels) and the Tigers are facing one of the AL's worst (Blue Jays), the Sox needed to make up ground, no excuses. And with the Tigers dropping two of three, they had their chance....
