Were Sens wives, foundation misled by "charity"?
2007-12-06 02:28:00 Do the charitable folks who buy raffle tickets from The Better Halves, the Ottawa Senators' wives and girlfriends, know they are helping support an anti-abortion group? That's the question posed in a lengthy online column by cbc.ca's Heather Mallick. When word came out that The Better Halves were giving one-third of the proceeds from this year's $50,000 Christmas Tree raffle to First Place Pregnancy Centre (operated by Pentecostal anti-abortionists), it raised the ire of groups like Planned Parenthood.Apparently, it was the latter organization that contacted Mallick, an author and former Globe and Mail columnist. When Mallick dug a little deeper, she found that the Sens Foundation matches every dollar raised by The Better Halves. Although Mallick alleges in her column that First Place is not a registered charity and the Foundation is facing some hard questions from Revenue Canada as a result, an editor's note indicates that it operates under a different name as a registered charit...

Sherri Shepherd : Christians Were Around Before Like uhh ... B.C. !!
2007-12-05 22:31:00 You got to wonder if Barbara Walters selects co-hosts for The View in order come off looking less dumb by comparison. When co-host Sherri Shepherd starts to talk some viewers get understandably anxious. This is a woman who makes factual errors that are so wrong, they are almost bizarre. Not so long ago Shepherd said she didn't know if the earth is flat or not. This startling admission came on the heels of her flippant dismissal of the Theory of Evolution. The most recent gaff exposed her complete ignorance about the meaning of the term BC - Before Christ. In a recent episode of The View during a discussion about the Greek philosopher Epicurus (341-270 BC), Shepherd claimed there were Christians around during Epicurus' time because the ancient Greeks "threw them to the lions".Since Epicurus lived centuries before Jesus allegedly walked the earth, the presence of Christians during Epicurus' time would have been a trick requiring time travel. Moreover it was the Romans who threw Christ...

The Brontë sisters were particularly thrilling
2007-12-03 14:11:00 The Hindustan Times chats to writer Anita Desai, who seems to fall straight into the category of Brontëite. What do you like to read?I grew up on the English classics and read English literature at Miranda House, Delhi University. The Brontë sisters were particularly thrilling. My mother, a Berliner, brought German classics with her — Goethe, Schiller and so on — which she would read to us with great passion in the evenings. I wonder what she would have made, though, of modern writers like Günter Grass. Well, I have kept up with my reading, I suppose. These days I am engrossed by Latin American writers.Wuthering Heights seems to be the perfect sample for e-book readers. A few days ago we mentioned a Sony which included Wuthering Heights. And coincidentally enough today the French newspaper Libération writes about the pros and cons of the French rival of Kindle: Bookeen. Bookeen apparently comes with Hurlevent (Wuthering Heights in its French translation) preloaded.Appropriat...

2007-12-02 15:53:00 If you were a burger at McDonalds, you would be called McGorgeous! --- Everything returns from the memory; your pain and your silence, your anguish and your mystery. Everything amazes in the past; your repeated name... your doubt and your fatigue. Shade stronger than the death Shout lost in the oblivion. Step that returns from the failure. Song broken into pieces that still is song. Later... the oblivion will come or will not come and I''ll lie to laugh, and I'll lie to cry. Clumsy ghost from the past dancing on the shed perhaps to forget. And later in the silence of your voice a pain of solitude will happen and I will shout to live... as if I avoided the memory in repentance to be able to die. Everything returns from the memory; your pain and your silence, your anguish and your mystery. Everything amazes in the past; your repeated name... your doubt and your fatigue. Shade stronger than the death Shout lost in the oblivion. Step that returns from the failure. ...
We all knew Democrats were nuts...
2007-12-02 04:03:00 A roundup of Gallup health polls over the past four years finds that Republicans are far more likely than Democrats to report having excellent mental health. "The reason the relationship exists between being a Republican and more positive mental health is unknown, and one cannot say whether something about being a Republican causes a person to be more mentally healthy or whether something about being mentally healthy causes a person to choose to become a Republican," the study said. The study speculated that the fact that Republicans have on average higher incomes than members of others parties could play a factor. But in the study, even Republicans making less than $50,000 a year reported having excellent health far more than Democrats earning the same. The study was based on interviews with 4,014 American adults who were at least 18 years old, conducted from November 2004 through 2007. The margin of error was 2 percent. I guess this survey reaffirms it. I wonder how long it w...

What Would You Do, If You Were Not Doing, What You Are Doing Today?
2007-12-01 01:51:00 Confused with that question? Let me explain. I was watching "Nothing personal" (a interview program) a few days ago and this was a question posed by the interviewer to a famous cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya. He said he doesn't have an answer to that because cricket is what he has been doing since he was 11 years old. That question got me thinking too. When I was 8 years old, I wanted to become a veterinarian. I wanted to save the animal kindom from all it's sorrows! Needless to say that at the time, I loved pets! Little by little, I realized that it took more than that to actually become a veterinarian! Several years later, I am not even close to being what I wanted to be. Rather, I now work for a software company. I know that it wasn't my childhood dream, but believe it or not I enjoy what I do. Looking back now, I don't think that I want to change steer my career in any other direction.I asked my self the same question, "What would you do if you were not doing, what you are doing...

Remember When Garages Were For Cars?
2007-11-30 04:38:00 I came across a great blog entry while on Digg tonight from the WallStreetFighter Blog that I thought I would share. It is very true and something to notice more and more in my neighborhood. It drives Dale crazy that so many people park their cars outside in a neighborhood where everyone has a three car garage.Something I've noticed more and more as I drive around the neighborhood is that everybody is turning into a frickin packrat. We're not talking about middle income here, we're talking $300,000 plus homes and $30,000 vehicles. You think the dumps are full? Just think of how full they would be if people started throwing stuff in their garages away and started pulling in their cars?
Were not as good - Lets go Omar
2007-11-30 03:27:00 For those of you who aren't familiar John Delcos the Mets beat writer for the Lo Hud Journal has a great blog. Especially during the season, but even in the off season Delcos runs an interactive Blog where he answers questioned posted to him. For a big time fan it's a great insight into the club.....I'll be honest today I'm not feeling it, as I mentioned before it feels like last off season all over again. And I do believe that Omar is attempting to improve the team but just can't get it done, which is what has been occurring for the last year. Other then Castillo and Alou there hasn't been a major signing or trade since Perez mid season "06". I don't know whether Omar just doesn't want to give up his prospects, Wilpon has financially cut him off or teams just don't want to work with him. But even this off season it seems like many free agents are looking elsewhere and several teams have better options for trade packages. Paraphrasing Omar-I'm working the phones and lookin...

I Thought You Were Already There, Mike
2007-11-29 18:31:00 It looks like the ?aw, shucks? Repug presidential candidate is at it again, based on this other excerpt from the presidential debate last night.Sure, the notion of ?sending Hillary Clinton to Mars? was a clever line to work wingnuttia all into a froth, and then of course, Huckabee got all serious?"Whether it's the medical technologies that saved many of our lives and the lives of our families, it's the direct result from the space program," he said. "We need to put more money into space and technology exploration."Um?OK, Governor ?Razor Blades? (Huckabee does at least offer a smiling face to his lockstep right-wing orthodoxy, though, as Hendrik Hertzberg notes here in this week?s issue of The New Yorker). The problem, Mike, is that the head of your party refuses to properly fund the agency (as noted here), with Dem Senator Barbara Mikulski and Repug Senators Kay Bailey Hutchinson and Richard Shelby trying to secure supplemental funding. As the story tells us?"Based on current projec...

RAFA: FANS WERE MAGNIFICENT
2007-11-29 10:21:00 Paul Hassall at Anfield 28 November 2007Rafael Benitez expressed an emotional message of thanks to the club's supporters after Liverpool stormed to an emphatic 4-1 win over Porto in the Champions League. The Reds boss was delighted with the performance of his players as they ensured that progress to the latter stages of the competition will be assured if they beat Marseille in two weeks' time. But it was the impact made by the club's fans that struck the most significant chord with the Reds boss as Anfield once again rose to the occasion in Europe."I want to say thank you to our supporters because I think that they were as always magnificent," said Benitez."The most important thing is the team so I say thank you for the support. To the players it was important as I said before the game and it was also for me, so I say a thank you, a big thank you."Fernando Torres hit a double and Steven Gerrard (penalty) and substitute Peter Crouch added other late goals to give the scoreline a mor...
