Hossa plays next week...Western Conference collectively wets self
2009-11-19 03:50:00 It looks like the Hawks big offseason prize, winger Marian Hossa, is set to make his Blackhawks debut next week. Hossa is targeting next Wednesday in San Jose for his return, but it may be more likely that he plays next Friday in Anaheim or Saturday in Los Angeles. My hockey chubby is awakening. Visions of Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews, and Hossa skating on a line together makes my knees weak. I can see Willie Mitchell from Vancouver breaking his stick in frustration as another goal slips past Greasy Bob Luongo. Picture it...a shootout in Detroit. The toothless, mulleted Red Wings fans standing and booing as the Hawks blonde haired sniper heads to the net, and buries the puck...
Galaxy and Dynamo advance to Western Conference Final
2009-11-09 06:01:00 The two remaining MLS Conference Semifinal series were decided today, with the Houston Dynamo and the L.A. Galaxy earning their places in the Western Conference Final. The teams booked their tickets to the final -- which will be played next Friday at the Home Depot Center -- courtesy of two 1-0 victories. Houston was the first of the two teams to move onto the second round, as they got a goal from forward Brian Ching in the first period of extra time to defeat the Seattle Sounders 1-0 on aggregate....

Western Conference Finals Preview
2008-05-22 00:24:00 Once again the Spurs and Lakers meet in the playoffs. Although they haven't played since 2004, there's been some great match ups between the two and the winner usually ends up winning the NBA Finals. Both teams have combined to win seven of the last nine championships, the Spurs won in 1999, 2003, 2005 and 2007 and the Lakers won from 2000-02. They lost in the NBA Finals in 20o4 to Detroit. This one should be a dandy once again. The Lakers are a different team then the past few years. Kobe Bryant is his normal self and he finally has teammates that can back him up and trust. This Laker team has been the most impressive team thus far in the playoffs. They've been so consistent and they're getting balanced scoring night in and night out.As for the Spurs, they've been a little inconsistent. The first two games against the Hornets they looked lost. But in game 7 they looked like their old championship selves. This should be a great series, which I am expecting to go seven games.Analys...

Western conference final: Dallas extends the fun.
2008-05-18 16:16:00 Yesterday, game five of the Western conference final was another opportunity for the Detroit Red Wings, who were up 3-1 in this series, to finish off the Dallas Stars and qualify to the Stanley Cup finals. But the Dallas Stars were on a mission and had some objectives worth playing for. The disallowed goal to the Red Wings during the first period of game four gave a new life to the Stars. They went on to score the first goal of the game, to a 3-1 victory, avoiding a series sweep. Goaltender Marty Turco was still looking for a first victory at the Joe Louis Arena in career and needed his best game of the series to avoid his team's elimination. For game five, Dallas needed to score first.Outside the reduction of the stress and anxiety level, the feeling of playing with ''nothing to lose'' has a tendency to include. Each player feels that his tiny contribution can keep his team rolling. We had a good proof of that in game five. Halfway into the first period, Trevor Daley with his ve...

Western conference final: Awful refereeing gives Dallas a new life.
2008-05-15 04:17:00 Tonight, game four of the Western conference final was presented and the Dallas Stars were down 0-3 in this series and were facing elimination. But the story of the game was the discussable quality of the referees. For many reasons, the Detroit Red Wings have all the rights to blame the referees for their contribution to the Stars victory. During the first period, Dallas benefited of three straight man-advantages but were not able to convert on either of them. Then later in the period, a goal from Pavel Datsyuk was disallowed because the referee judged that Tomas Holmstrom was standing in the goaltender's crease. But it was clear on the replay that Holmstrom was not inside the blue paint. Then late into the second period, after the referees equalized the penalties stats by calling three straight infractions to the home team, the Dallas Stars opened the score with a goal from Loui Eriksson. The Red Wings tied the game at 1-1 during the first minute of the third period when Henrik Zette...

Western conference final: Datsuk scores three, Wings up three.
2008-05-13 04:56:00 The Detroit Red Wings crushed the Dallas Stars hopes of coming back into the series tonight with the help of Pavel Datsuk who registered his first career playoff hatrick. After ten minutes of play, the hero of the night, Pavel Datsuk, opened the score for the Wings. Then the Dallas Stars tied the game up at 1-1 with the first playoff goal from defensemen Niklas Grossman. But Datsuk replied only 37 seconds later and gave a 2-1 lead to the Wings.Brad Richards tied the game at 2-2 and gave hope to the home crowd early into the second period. But once again, the Wings pulled ahead thru Jiri Hudler, this time, the Wings never allowed a tying goal from their opponents. The third period was all in favor of the Red Wings. The killer goal came very early in the third period when Henrik Zetterberg scored while his team was shorthanded. Pavel Datsuk completed his hatrick with three minutes to go in the contest.Final score: Detroit Red Wings 5 - Dallas Stars 2 (Detroit leads the series by 3-0)Thu...

Western conference final: Wings puts pressure on the Stars.
2008-05-11 03:32:00 Game two of the Western conference final was played tonight at the Joe Louis Arena. The Detroit Red Wings has been nearly perfect thus far in this series as they only allowed two goals to the Dallas Stars this far in the series. The first period produced all the scoring in tonight's game. The Wings opened the score with Darren Helm who registered his first playoff goal. The Dallas Stars replied four minutes later when the shot from Stephane Robidas went past a partially screened Chris Osgood. Henrik Zetterberg scored the game-winner with five minutes to go to the first period. The Wings shutted the door on Dallas and protected the one goal lead during the rest of the game. A little boring for the hockey fans present in attendance but it proved to be an effective strategy. The game ended in some kind of chaos when Wings goaltender Chris Osgood touched Dallas Stars' forward Mike Ribeiro in the face with his stick. Ribeiro retaliated to Osgood with a slash of his own and a crowd formed ...

Western conference final: Detroit takes game 1.
2008-05-09 06:51:00 Yesterday, the Western conference final between the Detroit Red Wings and the Dallas Stars began at the Joe Louis Arena. The Red Wings completely dominated the match to take the early lead in the series. The Red Wings' power play produced three goals during the game. First, Brian Rafalski opened the score with a shot from the blue line while Tomas Holmstrom was screening goaltender Marty Turco. Then Johan Franzen doubled the Wings lead when he deflected a shot from Niklas Kronvall. Franzen is having his way during these playoffs as he now totals 12 goals.Tomas Holmstrom deflected a shot from Niklas Lidstrom during another power play early into the second period. Then Valterri Filpulla sent Detroit up 4-0, putting the game out of reach for Dallas. Only Brenden Morrow was able to get one past goaltender Chris Osgood and avoided the shutout.Final score: Detroit Red Wings 4 - Dallas Stars 1. (Detroit leads the series by 1-0)With at least one goal in each of his last five playoff games, ...

The Eastern Conference vs. The Western Conference: Two Paths to Success
2008-05-06 22:22:00 For the past decade there has been an obvious difference between the Eastern Conference and the Western Conference in the NBA. For the most part this has always played out with the quality of the play on the court, with the West dominating the East. However, this year there is another split

What Happened to the Great Western Conference Playoffs?
2008-04-17 09:23:00 The Western Conference playoffs start on Saturday. And I’m more disappointed than J.J. Redick’s life coach. Two weeks ago it looked like this might be the most exciting Western Conference playoffs of all time. There were be 8 legitimate title contenders, seven potentially spectacular playoff series, and an exciting air of uncertainty. Now all that has changed. It started with Golden State missing the playoffs. That left only seven real contenders (sorry Denver) and gave the #1 seed a huge advantage. Then the Lakers (the one team who given the right circumstances could cruise to the Finals) locked up that #1 seed. Then the Lakers were given the right circumstances—two relatively easy matchups (vs. Denver, vs Utah or Houston) and a conference finals opponent who will be tired and worn down. In effect, those eight contenders were narrowed down to five (I’m short changing Utah and Houston, but they just won’t be able to beat the Lakers). Four of those ...

2008-04-16 07:51:00 The Los Angeles Lakers began the season in chaos almost 6 months ago. They finished it as the Western Conference champions. 2008 NHL Playoff Predictions—Western Conference, Opening Round
2008-04-09 15:02:00 The West, my friends, is best. Or it sure as heck seems that way as the playoffs get set to begin. With apologies to the Penguins and Canadiens, the four-horse race shaping up in the Western Conference promises to be a good ol' fashioned shootout. Wild, wild west? You bet.Oh, and the five through eight seeds are more than capable of pulling off an upset or two along the way.Hockey.com wraps up its opening round NHL Playoff Preview by taking a look at the Western Conference matchups. Western Conference Predictions
2007-10-30 00:48:00 Ranking the teams in the order I think they will finish the season out:1) Phoenix Suns - Expected NBA champions will run to the title. 2) Dallas Mavs - Another disappointing season with no title?3) San Antonio Spurs - Defending champs will fall short as they get outrun.4) Denver Nuggets - Melo and AI's first full season together should be a treat.5) Houston Rockets - Success of this team will rise and fall with Yao Ming. New coach Rick Adelman may help. 6) Utah Jazz - Tough to place them 6th, especially after the Jazz' great playoff run last year.7) Los Angeles Lakers - Kobe's still the man, but that's all the Lakers have when it comes to playoffs.8) New Orleans Hornets - Chris Paul and company finally break into the playoffs, but will get bounced out 1st round.9) Golden State Warriors - Losing J-Rich makes them miss the playoffs, just barely.10) Sacramento Kings - They might barely be in the mix for the final playoff spot in the West, but don't have enough to hold their own w...
Fantasy Basketball Projections: Western Conference
2007-10-17 15:11:00 Fantasy Basketball is just around the corner. I have already done two drafts, and there are lots of things to look for this season. The following is a team-by-team look at some viable fantasy options, and some others you may have heard of. Expect Eastern Conference Projections in a couple days. 1. Dallas Mavericks - With the Mavs great offensive consistency, expect a few players from this squad to be off the board early in fantasy drafts. Dirk Nowitzki is going as early as #4 in some drafts (He went 5th in my Yahoo! Draft), and Josh Howard surprisingly went in the second round, ahead of players like Tracy McGrady, Carmelo Anthony, Paul Pierce, and Andre Iguodala. Potential sleepers on this team could be guards Jason Terry and Devin Harris. This backcourt tandem has the potential to put up some solid numbers over the course of this season. They could be good late round picks to sure up your guards. 2. Denver Nuggets - The obvious fantasy studs on t...

Breaking down the Western Conference prior to the trade deadline
2007-02-19 12:21:01 Boston Globe’s Kevin Paul Dupont take a look at the state of the Western Conference teams leading up to the February 27 trade deadline. Anaheim: They like what they have — why not? — and they’re without a first- or second-round pick to deal. But GM Brian Burke loves to trade (see: Chris Pronger). Maybe he’ll find that big winger ( Murray?). Calgary: GM Darryl Sutter has been busy, reacquiring Craig Conroy and also getting Brad Stuart and Wayne Primeau. Flames are set in net and on blue line. But they’ll take more scoring help. Chicago: It’s more about getting rid of guys now. Ex-Bruins Bryan Smolinski and Martin Lapointe could be outta there. Adrian Aucoin, too. No suitors for netminder Nikolai Khabibulin, due $6.75 million each of next two years. Colorado: Will miss playoffs for first time in the post-Nordiques era. Two names keep coming up for trade: Milan Hejduk and Marek Svatos. Imagine the market if Joe Sakic said, “OK, rent m...
