Growing demand in producing countries pushes up the price of oil
2008-05-23 05:25:00
The growing thirst for oil in China and India is well known. However, this global surge in demand is being led by oil producers that are emerging as significant consumers, too, undermining their capacity to export when global supplies are tightening. ?Consumption is cannibalising their export capacity,? Jeff Rubin, an oil analyst for CIBC World Markets ...
Healthy Old Europe
2008-05-19 14:44:00
The population of western Europe is aging steadily, and the region’s birthrate is well below the replacement level, but Europe’s elderly are exceptionally healthy. That means they could be more productive for longer than their predecessors were. If western European governments learn to tap this potential, healthy aging could become the region’s next great economic ...
Dying Russia
2008-04-26 19:04:00
Russia’s brutally high levels of mortality, along with anemic fertility levels, fashion a second “exceptional” demographic trend for the country: depopulation. In the 16-plus years since the end of the U.S.S.R., Russia has recorded over 12 million more deaths than births. Net immigration has only partially compensated for this deficit. Consequently, Russia’s population dropped from ...
Review of Indian IT sector - Look to Western Europe
2008-02-19 19:53:00
By Vipin Agnihotri Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), India’s biggest IT services company third quarterly results in mid-January clearly show that North America still accounts for the bulk of TCS’s revenues at 49.5 per cent. On the other hand, Europe’s contribution to the company’s revenues has jumped to 28.5 per cent for 2007-08 from 23.1 per cent in 2004-05. For TCS, North America grew at 2.2 per cent, UK at 4.9 per cent and Europe at 24.2 per cent. Similar is the case with other IT companies like Infosys, Wipro, Satyam and HCL Technologies. In my opinion, the push for growth in geographies other than the US is gathering steam. Most of the experts feel that Indian IT industry has been minimizing its dependence on the US. According to sources, Satyam and Wipro is eyeing growth in markets like Japan, South Africa, India and China. The main reason behind all this is that the appreciating rupee against the dollar has made selling in the US less attractive. Furthermore, ...

The Success of Dacia Logan in Western Europe
2007-12-14 02:53:00
Looks like the Western Europe got a successful newcomer – the Dacia Logan. Let’s take a closer look before searching for quality Acura Integra performance pulleys online…Dacia, a Romanian car manufacturer, is a subsidiary of French manufacturer Renault, which purchased it in 1998. Since then, Renault assigned Dacia to be responsible in building a easy-to-fix car for Eastern Europe, as well as for Asia and South Africa. Surprisingly, Logan made it up to achieve huge sales success in Western Europe. By fact, nearly 15 percent of the Logan’s 159,173 mid-2007 sales total was accounted to France and Germany alone. Want to know the secret? The Logan is being sold as little as 7,600 euros, making it the cheapest car in Europe.Like many European cars, the Logan is provided with small and efficient engine options. The Logan MCV, the seven-seat station wagon version, was powered with a 1.5 L turbodiesel. The engine generates 85 hp (might not be fast enough for most, but frugal) to run...

HIV-positive gay men in Western Europe disproportionately affected by STIs
2007-10-04 21:54:00
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) – including syphilis, gonorrhoea, LGV and hepatitis C – are disproportionately affecting HIV-positive gay men, according to a review of STIs amongst gay men in Western Europe published in the October 2007 edition of the journal Sexually Transmitted Diseases. The authors conclude that this not only highlights the need to routinely test HIV-positive gay men for STIs and hepatitis C, but also suggests that changes in STI incidence may no longer reflect corresponding changes in HIV incidence amongst gay men as a whole. Since 1996, when the era of effective antiretroviral therapy began, the number of diagnosed HIV-positive gay men who are well and sexually active has increased substantially. In order to understand trends in HIV prevalence and STIs amongst HIV-positive gay men in Western Europe, researchers from London undertook a review of published reports between 1996 and 2006. They focused on twelve countries (Belgium, Denmark, France, ...

Alert: Western European Train Alliance Forming
2007-04-24 18:08:00
Photo by kcjazzswing2 We chanced upon this article in Der Spiegel about plans to create a train alliance between the national train systems of Germany, France, Switzerland, Austria, the Netherlands, Belgium, and the UK’s Eurostar. The partnership—internally known as Railteam—will offer frequent rider points and also integrate various national high-speed rail line routes. The goal is to compete with low-cost carriers, and since we always prefer rail travel to air travel, we’re on board. But the question remains: can train fares be brought into the same pricing category as low-cost air fares?

Western European Press Reaction to Orbán
2007-03-27 00:59:00
The German and Austrian press collectively lashed out at Orbán and Fidesz. Both the conservative and liberal written media voiced its concern over the radical rally held at the 15th of March. DIE WELT:For example, the main conservative newspaper in Germany, Die Welt, published an article about the current events entitled, 'In Hungary the opposition is discrediting itself.' They mention that Orbán says that one can chase away the government even in a democracy. But with what means? With the power of the streets? - asks the famous newspaper. Hundreds of demonstrators took this literally and went on to wreck havoc in the evening -Die Welt interpreted, then added: Orbán was playing with fire. This is not only bad for Hungary ( a country that Orbán headed between 1998 to 2002) but also bad for his party and its civic leaders.SÜDDEUTSCHE ZEITUNG:According to the liberal newspaper, one should ban the interaction between democratic politicians and drunken, extremist hooligans. However,...
