Smith Westerns: Chicago's Best Band
2011-02-25 04:36:00
I did a quick Google search on Smith Westerns and within seconds saw them described as both 'glam rock' and 'dream pop.'I would have used different words. Namely, "the best band in Chicago."For whatever reason, Chicago hasn't had much of a music scene in recent years. There really hasn't been a sort of defining Chicago sound since the blues heyday. I can't even think of who the last great Chicago band was. Wilco maybe? Yeah, it's been a while. And I'm pretty sure no one would expect the Next Big Thing to sound like this.Listening to Smith Westerns in a miserable and snowy Chicago winter, it's almost hard to believe they're really from Chicago. Their latest, "Dye It Blonde" is a mash-up...

Brokeback Mountain (Widescreen Edition) (2005)
2008-01-27 07:17:00
A sad, melancholy ache pervades Brokeback Mountain, Ang Lee's haunting, moving film that, like his other movies, explores societal constraints and the passions that lurk underneath. This time, however, instead of taking on ancient China, 19th-century England, or '70s suburbia, Lee uses the tableau of the American West in the early '60s to show how two lovers are bound by their expected roles, how they rebel against them, and the repercussions for each of doing so--but the romance here is between two men. Ennis Del Mar (Heath Ledger) and Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal) are two itinerant ranchers looking for work in Wyoming when they meet and embark on a summer sheepherding job in the shadow of titular Brokeback Mountain. The taciturn Ennis, uncommunicative in the extreme, finds himself opening up around the gregarious Jack, and the two form a bond that surprisingly catches fire one cold night out in the wilderness. Separating at the end of the summer, each goes on to marry and have c...

The Great American Westerns Still Blazing Trails In Americas Heart

From the very beginnings of movie making and television broadcasting one of the most popular kinds of shows were western themed. 3:10 to Yuma (Widescreen Edition) (2007)
2008-01-09 11:35:00
Here's hoping James Mangold's big, raucous, and ultrabloody remake of 3:10 to Yuma leads some moviegoers to check out Delmer Daves's beautifully lean, half-century-old original. That classic Western spun a tale of captured outlaw Ben Wade (Glenn Ford)--deadly but disarmingly affable--and the small-time rancher and family man, Dan Evans (Van Heflin), desperate enough to accept the job of helping escort the badman to Yuma prison. Wade, knowing that his gang will be along at any moment to spring him, works at persuading the ultimately lone deputy to accept a bribe, turn his back on "duty," and go home safe and rich to his family. That the outlaw has come to admire his captor intriguingly complicates the suspense. All of the above applies in the new 3:10, but it takes a lot more huffing and puffing to get Wade (Russell Crowe this time) and Evans (Christian Bale) into position for the showdown. Mostly, more is less. To Mangold's credit, his movie doesn't traffic in facile irony or p...
10 Unconventional Westerns

TriggerStreet.com | Trigger Digest I?m not proclaiming these to be the ?Top Ten? or ?Ten Best? unconventional westerns. I haven?t seen Brando?s ONE-EYED JACKS, which I?m told would be on my list and I haven?t seen Fonda?s HIRED HAND which I really believe would make the list too. No, this is a list of ten great ...
3:10 to Yuma (2007)
2007-09-10 19:59:00
It’s nice to see the revival, or a come back, of the Western genre. I have seen the 1957 version, and not 50 years later this remake brought Elmore Leonard’s short story back to the screen. Watch the trailer. The plot: one-legged civil war veteran Dan Evans (Christian Bale) is in dire straits as powerful landlord ...

Depressions and Westerns
2007-06-13 16:15:00
Within the last week, two members of our community are trying to stave off a depression and another returned from three weeks in hibernation. There may be others; these are just the ones I know about. As I thought about them, I have felt great empathy and compassion. I remember so many times when I could feel a depression coming on and wondered what I could do to stop it before it took hold.I always tried my usual fare: playing music, spending time outdoors, forcing myself to walk--if only for a few blocks, racking my mind to determine the trigger, trying to talk it away, trying to write it away, gardening, doing physical labor, praying, trying my own form of meditation, trying to ignore it, going to films, watching funny videos, spending time with people who love me and whom I love, seeking out friends who make me laugh, and the list goes on.Sometimes it worked; other times it didn't. I wish I could figure out why.Coming back from a depression isn't easy either. For me it se...
