Whale Watching in Puerto Rico
2008-01-29 00:59:00
With February quickly approaching, we are about to enter into the best time of year to see Humpback whales off the west coast of Puerto Rico. If you have the chance to head to the west coast around the Rincon area, you might be lucky enough to see these magnificent, endangered species during their mating and birthing season. Photo by Seamus Murray. Please note that the above image was not taken off the coast of Puerto Rico. But, if you are lucky, you might get to see something just as incredible Here in Puerto Rico, the month of February is the peak season for whale watching, but whales have been spotted from January to Late March. One of the best places to spot these magnificent Humpback whales is from the observation park at the Rincón Lighthouse on the west coast. If you would prefer to see the whales from the sea, I have been told that you should just ask at the marina to see if there are any whale watching trips available. Two other locations that are also worth considering ...

Whale Watching from Point Vicente in Palos Verdes Peninsula, California
2008-01-16 18:52:00
SeeTheGlobe.com Travel Article :: Every year, between the months of December and May, volunteers from the Los Angeles branch of The American Cetacean Society gather daily at the Point Vicente Interpretive Center on the Palos Verdes Peninsula to participate in a census of whales passing through the Catalina Channel. Since this is one of our favorite walking trails in all of LA we often stop by, say hello to the participants, ask them questions and analyze the data that is presented. Not that we know how many whales appeared or should have appeared be but it is always interesting to note that just a few miles off the coast of one of world's largest metropolis areas, whales swim by, almost unnoticed, on their yearly migration.

Cruise: Maui: Whale Watching
2007-12-18 05:18:00
Took Prince Kuhio Maui-Molokai whale watching tour. The tour shuttles arrived at the dock at the precise moment scheduled, and the rest of the trip was equally efficient. The crew appeared genuinely interested in both whales and our safety; the onboard concession was dirt cheap and so good Kasia ate two hotdog combos, an unheard of intake at a single sitting, and that after a good sized breakfast. The tour started with an orientation by the company?s naturalist, Katie, who was superb! I learned more about humpbacks in that 15 minutes than from any PBS special, and somehow seeing the whale?s tail spread out before you in person has a lot more impact than seeing something on TV. There were also two volunteers from the Whale Sanctuary on board to assist the naturalist, and they did a great job of floating around the boat answering questions as they occurred to us, as Katie provided intermittent commentary over the speaker system. Both of the volunteers were drawn to Tigana?s fanaticism...

Whale Watching on the Mexican Riveara
2007-08-17 16:05:00
Living on the west coast, one of our favorite cruise destinations is the Mexican Riviera. On our last Riviera cruise, in February of this year, we were lucky enough to see whales even though it was not part of the tour we were on. We were on what is better known as a booze cruise. The catamaran we were on was taking us down the coast of Ixtapa to Ixtapa Island and one of the passengers saw something in the distance. The captain knew it was a whale and started to follow, while still keeping a good distance. It happened to be a mother and baby whale but we did not get close enough for my novice eyes to say what kind, but was told they were gray whales. It was an awesome site to see.The best time for whale watching is between the months of January and March on the Mexican Riviera. While its a little on the cool side when leaving out of San Diego or Long Beach, the weather is wonderful down near Cabo San Lucas and other ports south where the whales are spending their winter migration. O...

Weight Watching or Whale Watching?
2007-06-16 06:19:00
Today, I need to write down my goals because tomorrow I leave on an Alaskan cruise for one full week!!!! (Katie: don't worry, I'll still be here and Molly's actually going to try to phantom post...) The word cruise just scares me - all you can eat food. I am going with my husband's family. He has ten brothers (who are all married), and one sister. This family has a weird phenomenon. All of them are those "Oh, it must be genetics" thin ones that completely puzzle us. You know them: ripped arms without lifting weights, skinny butt that fits back into jeans when they go home from the hospital after childbirth, size 0-4 but they have never seen the inside of a gym, size 0-4 yet they order the most fattening meals at restaurants (including dessert). Well, this family has this "problem" yet it can't be genetics; they're all my sister-IN-LAWS! Welcome to size 0-6 land! My own joke with myself all year has been "Yeah, we're going whale watching and they're just going to be watchin...

Whale Watching
2007-06-05 15:44:00
Last week Japan very much spat the dummy when the International Whaling Commission voted to continue the ban on commercial whaling. However, due to a loophole Japan continues to kill whales in the name of "scientific research" although very few, if any, scientific papers have actually been published by Japan to justify it's continuation of the slaughter of whales. The whalers are allowed to sell the whale meat produced as a by-product of their scientific research, and most people know that "scientific research" is just a back-door way to get around the commercial whaling ban. This year Japan has announced that it will, for the first time in many years, kill 50 humpback whales in the name of scientific research. This has alarmed many countries which want to see these beautiful creatures of the deep protected and flourishing. It has especially outraged countries such as Australia and New Zealand which have strong Whale watching tourist industries.I can recall that, in 1994 when I live...
