Zuccarello Hopes to Help Steer Whale out of Skid
2012-01-26 23:47:00 By Bruce Berlet After a 5-3 victory over the Springfield Falcons on Dec. 31, the Connecticut Whale (19-15-3-5) had a six-point lead over the Adirondack Phantoms in the AHL?s Northeast Division and were within two points of the Eastern Conference?s top spot. But entering a game at the XL Center on Friday night against the surging Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, the Whale is on a nine-game winless streak (0-5-1-3). Despite the slump, the Whale still has a nine-game points streak (5-0-1-3) at home since a 5-3 loss to the Hershey Bears on Dec. 9 and a one-point lead over the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, who had an eight-game winning streak ended in a 4-3 shootout loss to the visiting Atlantic Division-leading St. John?s IceCaps on Wednesday night. The Whale is two points ahead of Adirondack, which hosts Bridgeport on Friday night, and Albany, which is at Binghamton. No one has been more frustrated during the recent tough times than wing Mats Zuccarello, who has missed the last four games an...

Whale Mid-Season Report
2012-01-12 20:46:00 By Bruce Berlet After being among the AHL?s elite for most of the season, the Connecticut Whale looks to smooth their first speed bump as the midpoint of the season arrives Friday night in Norfolk, Va. The Whale?s four-game winless streak (0-2-1-1) is their longest of the franchise?s 15th season, but they still have a five-point lead over Albany in the Northeast Division despite the loss of their two leading scorers, center John Mitchell and rookie left wing Carl Hagelin, to the parent New York Rangers and injuries to veteran defenseman Wade Redden and skilled wing Mats Zuccarello, named to the Eastern Conference All-Star team last week after playing in only 18 games. ?For the most part, we played some pretty good hockey until last week,? said veteran center Kris Newbury, now the Whale?s leading scorer (15 goals, 21 assists) despite missing five games while on recall to the Rangers and four games because of a suspension. ?Our special teams have been good (power play is tied for thir...

And they could have a second new player, wing Wojtek Wolski, in the near future. Christensen agreed to a two-week conditioning assignment request by the New York Rangers. He has one goal and four assists in 20 games with the Blueshirts. Christensen, 28, told the New York media that it was ?never a question of saying ?no,? it was ?yes? all the way.? ?I spoke to my agent, and we decided this was the best thing for me,? Christensen said. ?I haven?t played a lot. I really love hockey. I mean that?s why I play the game. That?s more the point, I just want to play hockey. I understand there are things I need to work on, but I just want to be on the ice. I?m excited to get some games again. This will give me the chance to go and play. Plus, it will keep me prepared in case something happens and I need to go back in the lineup.? Coach John Tortorella said Christensen came to a q...

Andre Deveaux and Jonathan Audy-Marchessault both tallied a goal and an assist for Connecticut, who fell in their fourth straight overall (0-2-1-1). ?We?re going to have to find ways to spread out the scoring,? said Whale head coach Ken Gernander. ?We?ve had some opportunities here in the first half to close out games in which we had a lead and failed to do so, those are points in the standings, so I think in the second half it?s going to be important for us to do that, to make more of those opportunities.? The Whale broke through 12:48 into the first period on the power-play, as Deveaux fired his 11th goal of the season past Springfield goaltender Manny Legace (26 sa...
