Save the Whales (Again)
2009-02-22 06:47:00
(Artist credit: Brian Marshall White) It's a pretty sad world we live in when someone can bash a seal over the head repeatedly and only be fined $2,000 and be suspended from the seal hunt for one day, and yet someone who photographs or videotapes that very event, is fined $100,000 and can be sent to jail for a year. Where are the freakin' priorities here people?Canadian Justice is a Wonderful Thing - NOT Sea Shepherds season this year in intervening with the whale culling is now over and they have returned to Australia. Captain Watson is calling this season a success and you can read his outline of reasons why here: Ten Reasons that Operation Musashi Has Been a Success When the SS returned to Hobart a couple days ago, the Australian authorities were waiting with a warrant to seize all videos, photographs, global positioning records, etc from the SS. Captain Watson states that while he and his crew were treated civilly and professionally, he points out that the Australian author...

Went out Dolphin Watching this morning, and immediately saw several humpback Whales. Previous whale watching experiences were pretty much limited to the occasional spout and glimpse of a back, but today we got the full show -- blow, back, swimming around, tail up dive, all within maybe 100 yards. Very nice. Then Spinner Dolphins, a whole bay full, doing synchronized swimming for us, and leaping, and, yes, spinning. The naturalist on board (Pacific Whale Foundation tour)described spinner dolphin spins, but I didn't really believe it until I saw it with my own eyes. And I got to see a baby dolphin leap up just feet away from me -- very very cute, though I won't know if I caught it on film until I can download to the computer. Some of the dolphins swam close enough to almost touch. Astounding sight! Then, complete surprise to everyone, came into a crowd of spotted dolphins on the way back to shore, and several more humpbacks. A totally awesome morning!Lunch turned out to also be quit...

If the World is created by the Songs of Whales by Evan Palmer

We think we know and that's usually where the problem starts. We think we know about space and time. We think we know about our own existence. We think we know about history, identity, the reasons for things, and truth and consequences."Realisticism" replaces reality. Realisticism doesn't need to know the whole truth or even most of the truth. It gets mixed in with, and mixed up with, pragmaticism. "Results" become the barometer of truth and results, as we quickly discover, are very relativistic. In the 1960s, the Milky Way was the Universe. The experts said so as did the textbooks, the newspapers and the scientists talking on the movie newsreels. This was after "E=MC2" and nuclear bombs. We knew the Universe and we described it and we taught it and it was spectacularly wrong. It is incredibly instructive to listen to old recordings of the experts as they tell us without any equivocation that the Milky Way is the Universe and describe various aspects of it including its approxima...

They note that there are other countries outside of Japan and Norway, that appear to condone or support whaling. While they have expressed support of the Whale Wars series being currently shown on the Animal Planet and the fact that it will bring further heightened awareness globally on this unnecessary killing, they also would like people to be aware that this is a GLOBAL problem. Killer whales bring the hunt onto land
2008-05-07 09:40:00
A six-ton Killer Whale, torpedoes toward the beach, its dorsal fin cutting the Patagonian sea. It launches itself onto the sand in an explosion of water and foam. Before the waters die down, the orca is shaking its immense head from side to side with a Sea Lion pup clamped between his jaws. Then the Killer Whale wriggles into position to catch a wave to carry it back out to sea. This is a rare occurrence, in which a whale seems to defy its instincts by coming onto land, risking death if it becomes stranded on the inhospitable beach.Only seven Killer Whales in the world are known to hunt this way, all of them members of a pod that patrols the coast of Patagonia's Valdes Peninsula at this time of year. It happens almost exclusively in March and April -- early autumn in the southern hemisphere -- when baby sea lions are learning to swim. One of the favorite hunting spots is at Playa Punta Norte, the northern tip of the peninsula, where a deep channel leads up to the sand, passing between...

Hermanus - The Place To See Whales And More - Western Cape South Africa
2008-04-21 18:34:00
SeeTheGlobe.com Travel Article :: The distance from Cape Town to Hermanus is 105 kilometers. This gorgeous seaside town has a proud history dating back to the early 1800's when a man by the name of Hermanus Pieters followed a path etched into the ground by a herd of elephants. He was a teacher and shepherd he traveled south of Caledon along the elephant trail and ended up next to the sea where he discovered a fresh spring.Hermanus Pieters decided to set up camps next to a spring with fine grazing for his livestock. This beautiful setting became known as Hermanuspietersfontein. As farmers begun to hear of his success they made their journeys to this new and fertile location. The fish was plentiful and the fishermen had great successes. A church and school were built in 1886 at Hermanuspietersfontein.Rate and Review : Hermanus - The Place To See Whales And More - Western Cape South Africa

3 whales sighted underwater by our divers today....
2008-03-26 08:09:00
Man I wish I was leading that dive. I was up on the boat and just as my divers went down a few whales went by. They (the whales, the divers had no idea what was coming) turned themselves around and passed outside of the divers as the divers hit the edge of the reef at "Hoover's" then turned around again and headed directly to the divers. A female and her calf went directly overhead while an escort whale passed about 50 feet outside of Cathy and the group. All were thrilled. 2000 or so dives here and I've yet to see a whale underwater, bummer.Anyway, it was a good day of diving. The whales were definitely the highlights, but Cathy also found a yellow frogfish she's been watching grow over the last month or two... and at the end of our second dive (at an undisclosed location) she came up and said she needed to borrow the camera again. This is what she found..... Despite not being familiar with my camera, and also in a pretty strong surge, she was able to get these shots of a Re...
Why do whales have holes on their heads?
2008-03-25 01:26:00
As you know, whales do not have gills like fish. In fact, because they are mammals, they take in air through nostrils. The nostrils of whales, called “blowholes”, are located on top of their heads. Every once in a while, whales come to the surface of the water and open their blowholes to breathe.
Blame the Whales

They, among other countries like Canada for example, blame marine wildlife for the "diminishing of fish stocks" all over the planet.Uh, what? That's the most ridiculous BS I've ever heard. In The Whale Warriors, this book by Peter Heller that I am reading, there is a lot documented in there about the damage Japan has done to the marine ecosystem. And Japan is not alone in the harm they have done that in many parts of the planet, may well be irreversible. The USA is no exception either. But I digress. Here's an excerpt in the book. Captain Paul Watson of Sea Shepherd was having one of his several conversations with Peter Heller and said:"You know what the Japanese delegate Tadahiko Nakamura said to me at the 1997 IWC meeting in Monaco? Of Whales And Frosted Penguins
2008-03-19 05:58:00
My Shaman friend, Robert, recently wrote a post about watching a passing whale joyfully leaping out of the water on its way to wherever whales go this time of year. Now this post came at a good time for me seeing as how I was having one of those winter doldrums days. This has been a long, cold, and, at times, very snowy winter. Now Robert lives in Hawaii and he can see the ocean from his home...and it's warm there. I don't know if they even recognize the winter season...maybe they have six months of summer followed by six more months of summer.Up here in the mountains this winter we've had days and days and nights of...WINTER... COLD WIND...and ICE. That's why Robert's description of the whale had such a positive effect. It sounded WARM. Around here I wouldn't be surprised to see a penguin go waddling by wearing snowshoes and long-handled underwear.I think even the "little fellers" have gotten their fill of the weather here. They are over in Texas zipping about in their ships a...

Dolphin Saves the Whales
2008-03-15 21:20:00
While I’m on the subject of life-saving miracles, the BBC reported this week that it’s not just humans who take an interest in whale conservation. A bottlenose dolphin, known in her local neighbourhood as Moko, is taking it as seriously as any dolphin can. Mr Smith and his team of humans were getting nowhere fast in their attempt to save a pair of beached whales from the north east coast of New Zealand. Moko sped to the rescue just in time (maybe in a waterproof cape), uttered a few carefully chosen instructions to the whales (maybe in a Whalish accent), and they made it safely home in time for tea (or maybe a krill tisane). “I don’t speak whale and I don’t speak dolphin,” Mr Smith told the BBC, “but there was obviously something that went on because the two whales changed their attitude from being quite distressed to following the dolphin quite willingly and directly along the beach and straight out to sea.” He added: “The dolph...

“Save EAT the Whales” (?)
2008-03-06 16:35:00
It used to be ‘global warming’. Then a few dozen  enviro-nazi rallies got stopped by snowstorms. Kinda hard to claim global warming when you’re freezing your buttocks off. Remember how it was vital we ’save the whales’? Well, that’s out now, too.  OSLO -(REUTERS)- Eat a whale and save the planet, a Norwegian pro-whaling lobby said on Monday of a study showing that harpooning the giant mammals is less damaging to the climate than farming livestock. Environmental group Greenpeace dismissed the survey, saying almost every kind of food was more climate friendly than meat. The survey, focused on whale boats’ fuel use, showed that a kilo (2.2 lbs) of whale meat represented just 1.9 kilo (4.2 lbs) of greenhouse gases against 15.8 for beef, 6.4 for pork and 4.6 for chicken. “Basically it turns out that the best thing you can do for the planet is to eat whale meat compared to other types of meat,” said Rune Froevik of the High North All...

Northern Right Whales Head South to Give Birth
2008-03-05 08:12:00
Like many northerners who head south to warmer climates for the winter, many Northern right whales also head south in November and stay into April. Their destination is the only known calving ground for this rare and endangered population-the waters off Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. When they arrive, NOAA scientists are there to greet them, and to take DNA samples.Although they are large animals, finding them in the ocean is not easy. "Like people, they don't all congregate in one spot," says NOAA researcher Dr. Richard Pace of the challenge. "There may be one here, and three others 50 miles away. And you don't know who will be there this year." Pace, and colleagues from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (GADNR) and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), are primarily focused on locating right whale newborns and adults who have not yet been sampled. To find the whales, the researchers depend heavily on aerial spotting teams. Once close enough ...

Dolphins & Whales in 3D
2008-02-12 19:42:00
(Artist Credit: Bruce Harman)Two-thirds of Japan's citizens claim to support whaling. And yet the whale meat continues to go uneaten. What's up with that?Apparently the whalers are going broke because they can't market their catch and they have to pay back over $37 million in government subsidies that have supported their "scientific research."Something's not right here when a country can claim to have over 60% supporting the culling of whales and yet can't be bothered to support their whalers nor buy and eat the meat.Give it up Japan. You're starting to look even more ridiculous now.IWC (International Whaling Commission) will meet next month in London to discuss the current moratorium on whaling and what kind of an agreement can be reached between the pro and anti whaling nations of the world.Failing that, they'll next try at the next meeting in Chile this June.Excerpt:from the whales' perspective at least, a new deal along these lines might have something to comme...
