2011-12-13 02:46:00 Saturday’s Cincinnati Xavier fight that started toward the end of the basketball contest was a sad moment in American culture. English. Johnny English.
2011-10-08 06:58:00 Back into blogging groove again but my laptop is still in limbo. This is why I haven't been posting lately. Today I log in to my blogger account and see some drafts ... oh, where do I begin now? I've been watching movies lately, thanks to the generosity of the Legend Cinema. I particularly enjoyed the last two movies I watched - Johnny English and The Sorcerer and the White Snake. Two different movie genres, proof that LC is bringing to Cambodia different kinds of movies that cater to the interests of the movie-going public. Johnny English Reborn is the second Johnny English-movie starred by no less than the funny man himself, Rowan Atkinson. The plot is not much to talk about. The movie opens with Johnny English training with monks in a temple perched on top of what-could-be the Himalayan mountains. In self-imposed exile in a remote area surrounded by the Himalayan mountain range, Johnny is honing his "kung fu" skills and inner self under the guidance of the old...
Tomorrow's a big day
2011-09-09 17:29:00 ... for Legend Cinema. You see these invitations? They were handed to me personally. Woo-hooo! Legend Cinema has invited me on their Grand Opening tomorrow. The invitations came with the program schedule. For sure there will be lots of people attending - the media, bloggers, and LC's friends and special guests. Earlier this year, the news of a real movie-house opening in the city sent excitement all over the Penh. No less than the Cambodian Minister of Culture and Fine Arts will grace the occasion to be held at the 3rd floor of CityMall where the Legend Cinema is located. There will be speeches and then the ribbon cutting, of course. I hope I get to take good photos of that. A luncheon for the guests will follow, and - wait for it - as the highlight of tomorrow's affair, there will be a special screening of the movie, Avatar, in 3D!!! Thank you, Legend Cinema. It is with great pleasure that I am accepting the invitation :) Special thanks also to the marketing team headed by Soch...
The rise of the Legend (Cinema) in Phnom Penh
2011-08-13 13:01:00 A month or so ago, we were all were greeted by this exciting news; it spread like wildfire in Phnom Penh. My husband and I agreed we will go see a movie there when the Harry Potter 7 is screened. But when the newly opened Legend Cinema announced they were holding an early screening of the movie (The Rise of the Planet of the Apes) for the media last week, I could not resist the urge and immediately signed in. For an expat who is a self-confessed movie junkie like me, I really miss watching movies on the big screen! When I received the invite for bloggers junket, I was very excited. To me, it was a milestone of sorts because aside from it being the first time I would get to watch a movie in Cambodia in my ten years of living here, it's the first time that a company has included bloggers in their events. But I could be wrong. Anyways, beyond the free movie ticket, I was very curious and so looking forward to my first cinema experience in the Penh! Came Tuesday morning ... and...
Wordless Wednesday 102: Construction boom
2011-04-20 04:39:00 To my Phnom Penh friends, do you know where I took this photo?
Wordless Wednesday 0101: Painted temple walls and ceiling

On being quoted out of context
2011-02-04 03:08:00 Halloooooooch! Happy Chinese New Year everyone. It?s been weeks since I last posted here. After recovering from procrastination and laziness, I had to combat viruses and malwares lurking in my laptop before I could be able to sit down and write. Well, the laptop is now declared 100% clean and virus-free so I have no more excuses why I couldn?t blog. So what?s up, Sreisaat, you ask? I feel there?s not much happening around worthy of a blog post ? except for the little excitement we had about two weeks ago when Blogger.com and all blogspot sites were blocked in Cambodia. It created quite a stir and had a lot of us netizens, expat and locals alike, in Cambodia scratching our heads and clucking over this unprecedented move; seriously, block all blogspot sites? Commentary and speculation inside the country spread like wildfire and were carried over through Facebook and Twitter sites. Thankfully, these two sites didn?t get banned, too. Access t...
The PELUKA Sisters at Le Duo's Christmas Village
2010-12-14 16:57:00 Yes, if you want to see the PELUKA sisters in person, just visit us at Le Duo Restaurant! *lol* Seriously, we joined the Christmas Bazaar at Le Duo. It?s one thing in our wish list that we were able to do this year. The first time was at the Mith Samlanh?s fair, and now here. We are all into this for fun and experience, and of course, if we can sell our handmade items then GOOD for us! Le Duo is one of the popular Italian restaurants in the city. A week ago, they held a very successful bazaar and due to public demand, they extended it to ten more days (started yesterday and will run through Dec 23). Anyone who is looking for great Christmas shopping ideas, including fabulous Christmas decors, should not miss the Christmas Village at Le Duo. The Christmas Village bazaar is not as big in terms of vendors and space compared to the one hosted by the Women?s International Group (WIG). However small the area may be there are rows of booths with lots of stuffs for the family and fo...
Please keep Cambodia in your thoughts and prayers...
2010-11-23 10:47:00 Today we woke up to a very somber Phnom Penh. The whole country is mourning the tragic death of hundreds of people during a stampede that broke out on Monday night. It was the last hour of the last day of what should have been a happy celebration of the Water Festival. More than 300 people were dead and 500 injured when a stampede broke out at a bridge in Koh Pich (Diamond Island), a spit of reclaimed land in the river and developed by a private company. What a terrible way to end the festivities and an awful news to wake up to. By now you will find lots of sources online, but you can find a story here, and an eye-witness account here. Please spare a few minutes of your time and join us in offering prayers for the dead and the survivors, as well as for their families and relatives to get through this difficult time. The Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen called the stampede the "biggest tragedy" to strike Cambodia since the Khmer Rouge reign in the 19070s and he also o...

Update: Duch guilty of crimes against humanity
2010-07-26 08:05:00 ... and is sentenced to 35 years in jail. It was the first verdict (Case Number One) in the Khmer Rouge trials and, according to the Cambodia Tribunal Monitor who was providing a live blogging update, emotions were running high inside the jam-packed ECCC courtroom when the verdict was announced. Many people were crying. Out in the capital's streets, particularly in our area, the road was noticeably quiet with less vehicles; most Cambodians were probably indoors watching the whole proceedings with much anticipation. Duch looked impassive as judges find him guilty of crimes against humanity and grave breaches of the Geneva Convention. According to the verdict summary blogged live by the Cambodia Tribunal Monitor:Duch is not personally criminally responsible for the crimes at S-21... that is, the evidence is insufficient to conclude that he murdered or tortured anyone himself...But he is guilty by Joint Criminal Enterprise on a systematic level.Duch was "deeply enmeshed" at the c...
Khmer Rouge Tribunal verdict known today
2010-07-26 05:17:00 This is just a quick post especially for people outside the country who are following the Khmer Rouge tribunal. Today the whole capital is abuzz as we await the UN-backed Cambodian genocide court to hand down its decision in the trial of one of the Khmer Rouge leaders, Kang Kek Iew, aka, Commander Duch. Today, the verdict will be handed down for Duch, the Maths teacher-turned- Tuol Sleng prison chief, for his role in the atrocious communist regime that annihilated more than half of Cambodia's population. Duch is charged for crimes against humanity, war crimes, torture and premeditated murder, and faces a maximum penalty of life imprisonment. The tribunal does not have the power to impose a death penalty. It can be recalled that during the course of the trial, Duch, a former teacher, recognised the crimes he committed under his command and used the trial to formally ask for public forgiveness. He shocked everyone when he demanded the court for acquittal. A joint tri...
Fun, fun, fun at Mith Samlanh's Fun Fair!
2010-04-26 17:02:00 Last Saturday was a blast! My friends and I, we jokingly refer to ourselves as members of the PELUKA Sisterhood (you know who you are :D ); well, it's an inside joke! Fueled by our sense of boredom and desire to do something productive, we joined Mith Samlanh's Fun Fair for the first time, not as visitors but as sellers. We sold hand-made crafts made by us from beaded jewelries to crochet doilies and coasters. Although we did not do well sales-wise, we were able to observe the "trends" in fairs such as this one. We mentally noted what's hot and what's not so that the next time we join a fair, we would hit right the consumers' needs. In case you haven't heard, the Fun Fair is a regular event organised/hosted by the Mith Samlanh a non-government organisation working to support Phnom Penh's streetchildren through several education and skills training programs. Last Saturday's fair was intended for the whole family, expats and locals alike, including the families of the st...

What happens if a country goes bankrupt?
2009-03-01 20:44:00 I am certainly not an expert on this issue, but a few of the following things will happen: 1. The currency of that country would collapse and it would be worth less than the paper the money are printed on. 2. Economic output would decline dramatically. 3. The retail and service sector would be decimated. 4. High unemployment rates 5. ...
