Whimsy Alert: the "Domestic Transformer"
2010-06-01 23:36:00 Hong Kong architect Gary Chang grew up in crowded Hong Kong, where space is a valuable commodity. He and his large family lived in an apartment that was so tiny, he had to sleep in the hallway.Chang creates an ingenious solution to the space issues that many residents face with what he calls the "Domestic Transformer": a 300 square foot apartment with storage and amenities that move to create different, collapsible rooms with up to 24 different possible arrangements. Warm window tints, a sliding guest bed that rests atop the bathtub and an indoor hammock are just some of the elements that Chang employs to create a cozy, very inhabitable living space.In effect, this designer has seamlessly combined two of my favourite things: architecture and stuff that transforms into other stuff. Am I in love?

2010-05-04 04:20:00 Though not quite as elegant as its name suggests, the Moonlight Cushion is a neat little gadget that I hope is more comfortable than experience suggests it would be.Masquerading as an ordinary, furry pillow by day, a source of soft mood lighting at night, the Moonlight Cushion uses LEDs for safe illumination. They go for $37US a pop on Thumbs up.It's a novelty item that I can't see myself featuring in my home, however it could be a great addition to a kids' room as the most badass night light ever.It's like being in a gimmicky lit hot tub, but without the price tag or potential drunk drowning misdemeanors. Sounds good to me.
