Game Thread: Cubs @ White Sox 3:05 P.M. CT/ 4:05 P.M. ET: Fired Up and Read

After a pleasant (if ultimately unsatisfying) three game series against the Baltimore Orioles, the Cubs resume their tireless battle against the Cthulhu-loving Chicago White Sox. The giant Cubs-colored head of Barack Obama has just one question for all of us. Yes We Can! Because Barack Obama is a White Sox fan, I think I speak for all of us when I say he is not my first choice for President.  That honor has to go to the Constitutionally-ineligible-but--nevertheless-undaunted Ryan Scott Dempster If elected, Ryan Dempster will be our first Canadian President, ending the years of oppression Canadians have suffered under American-American rule. When he's not executing child rapists single-handed, Dempster is pitching pretty well for the Cubs.  In his last start, he went 8 innings and only let up one run. Ryan is a Taurus, and his horoscope is: The mere mention of your name strikes fear and terror in the hearts of men, though that's mainly because it's so difficult to pro...
White Sox Jermaine Dye Named Player of the Week
2008-06-24 20:29:00
A veteran of 13 big league seasons, Jermaine Dye has seen it all. That's why the White Sox slugger is not at all surprised by the way he's been swinging the bat lately. During last week's Interleague Play, Dye terrorized National League pitchers by hitting .417 (10-for-24) while launching five home runs and 13 RBIs. The 34-year-old right fielder, who also clubbed three doubles and scored 10 runs
Game Thread: White Sox @ Cubs: 1:20 P.M. CT/2:20 P.M. ET: Save Our City!

I hope everyone's been practicing their pirouettes and snapping in time to Bernstein, because it's time for the intra-city war that will make Jets vs. Sharks look like Hailie vs. United States.  (Hailie: 7, United States: nothing.) You see?  It can be done!  Let's beat those Sox! But enough with the cultural bon mots and fancy-pants allusions.  You didn't come here to be reminded that Diablo Cody is smarter than you, the way Johnny Sokko And His Flying Robot is cooler than any Power Ranger Zord.  You came here for baseball.  Here is my much-too-extended analysis: Pitchers Ted Lilly takes the mound for our Baby Bears.  Ted is really starting to pitch well of late- he has 6 wins in his last 9 starts, and has lowered his ERA from 6.46 at the end of April to its present 4.76.  Ted Lilly also leads the Cubs in strikeouts, with 83.  (Ryan Dempster has 81.) So what's been the key for Ted's Turnaround?  Cubs f/x says he's actually t...

Buying Low: Nick Swisher And The Chicago White Sox Hitters
2008-06-09 13:16:00
From Steve Gardner's chat at USA Today:Sparks,Nevada: Greetings Steve. From this point forward who is more productive. Konerko, Swisher, or C.Pena? Thanks Steve Gardner: I drafted Konerko and Pena on my AL LABR team and I've since traded both of them, so that shows you where I stand to some degree. Of course, I they still have some value since another owner was willing to trade for them, but I don't see how it can go much lower. Konerko seems to be heating up a little (two hits in each of last three games), but his wrist has been bothering him for a while now. With Pena, we just might have to chalk up last season as a fluke since he's back to his old ways, striking out and hitting a handful of homers. I'd be the most confident in Swisher putting up the best numbers from here on out. He's healthy and young enough that he's not set in his ways. Plus, he gets on base. He's also had at least one run scored in each of the past 7 games. I happen to agree on Swisher. As a matter of...

Esteban Loaiza Signs With White Sox
2008-06-04 19:56:00
Esteban Loaiza is back with the White Sox, this time as a reliever.  I believe ESPN 1000's Bruce Levine had the scoop once again. Loaiza, 36, pitched in seven games for the Dodgers this year before being designated for assignment to make room for Clayton Kershaw.  Loaiza is back under pitching coach Don Cooper, who helped him win 21 games in '03.
White Sox offense does the talking
2008-06-04 06:11:00
Ozzie Guillen’s tirade two days ago must have made an impression. The White Sox’s offense perked up and Chicago hit four homers Tuesday night to beat the Kansas City Royals 9-5. “I just think it’s one of those things,” said Nick Swisher, who’s been in a long slump but hit his fifth homer. “Ozzie is one of ...

Changes In Store For White Sox Offense?
2008-06-02 11:23:00
White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen vented about his offense yesterday, saying that he expects GM Kenny Williams to do something about it by Tuesday.  But when the Chicago Tribune spoke to Williams, he was much calmer than his manager. The Trib's Mark Gonzales says A.J. Pierzynski, Jermaine Dye, Carlos Quentin, Orlando Cabrera, and Alexei Ramirez are probably safe.  A Tribune poll asks Sox fans what should be done: Fire hitting coach Greg Walker, bench Nick Swisher, trade for a hitter, drop Paul Konerko and Jim Thome in the lineup, or clone Carlos Quentin. Realistically the Sox could probably wait Thome and Swisher's slumps out and give Konerko a break by putting him on the DL.  Josh Fields might be able to come up and help.  And Walker probably becomes the "sacrificial lamb," as South Side Sox puts it.

Young White Sox Hurler Wins Again
2008-05-30 08:07:00
White Sox hurler John Danks enjoyed a fine outing against the Tampa Bay Rays. The 23-year old southpaw evened his record to 4-4, with a solid 6 innings of work. He allowed just 1 run, 6 hits, and 1 walk, while fanning 8. His ERA is now down to 2.86 on the season, as he's allowed more than 3 runs on just one occasion all season.
