Who's visiting the White House?
2009-11-02 15:12:00
By Ariel Alexovich, RedEye Who's visiting the Obama White House? A-listers like Common, John Legend and Scarlett Johansson lent their famous faces to support President Obama during the presidential election. But a new White House initiative to disclose its visitors shows that not all celebrity favors are created equal. The Obama administration has rolled out a list of 110 people who visited the White House between Inauguration Day last January through July 31. Not all the names have been released due to security reasons, so if ScarJo did, in fact, hit up the Oval Office, her name could be released in the next batch of visitor logs. But until then, here's a look at the celebs who we know DID...

Obama today: Documentary travels road to White House
2009-10-29 04:28:00
Getty Images photoBy Alexia Elejalde-RuizRedEyeEarly on in "By the People," a behind-the-scenes documentary chronicling Barack Obama's presidential campaign, viewers meet Ronnie Cho, a field organizer making calls from a cubicle in an Iowa campaign office. The office is almost empty, reflecting a time, at the start of the Democratic primary, when many had never heard Obama's name."It's surreal to think that at one point I had to beg and plead for people to come to a house party in Iowa to meet him," Cho said. "That actually took real convincing."...
White Sox 2009: Jayson Nix
2009-10-23 14:00:00
Signed to a minor league contract, not a whole lot was to be expected of Jayson Nix. After losing his starting job with the Rockies just 22 games into the '08 season, Nix was back in AAA and at 26 years old, far from prospect territory. But he may found life and a role with a White Sox, if not another chance to start....
White Sox launch new tech venture
2009-10-22 20:05:00
Ed Sherman at Crain's has learned that on Monday, the White Sox will officially announce the launch of a new business operation that has nothing to do with baseball. The team has created Silver Chalice Ventures, a subsidiary that will focus initially on developing digital platforms for clients but ultimately could branch out into almost anything, according to Brooks Boyer, Sox chief marketing officer. The company already helped develop a mobile application for the Southeastern Conference, among other ventures. That application lets fans of the University of Florida, Louisiana State University and other football powers get live score updates, news and game highlights on their iPhones....
White Sox 2009: Freddy Garcia
2009-10-22 14:00:00
There comes a time in a major league pitcher's career when age and years of wear and tear set in. Most see their career come to a slow, if not scorching, halt. Others make due and give themselves life. Freddy Garcia has given his career life....

White Sox 2009: Gavin Floyd
2009-10-20 14:00:00
You'll hear from time to time about a player needing a change of scenary. That's because from time to time there are guys like Gavin Floyd that make that theory plausible. Acquired three years ago from the Philadelphia Phillies for Freddy Garcia, Floyd has found his career in Chicago....
White Sox 2009: Chris Getz
2009-10-19 14:00:00
There's nothing at all flashy or impressive in any aspect of Chris Getz's game. Speed, arm defense, power, contact. And entering 2008 as a 25-year-old with 10 games and seven at bats under his career belt, you couldn't label him a young prospect nor a player with experience. But when you combine all that he does bring to the table, what you have is a baseball player....
White Sox 2009: Gordon Beckham
2009-10-16 14:00:00
When Gordon Beckham was drafted 8th overall by the White Sox in the 2008 draft, his path to the bigs was projected to be a short one. Beckham and the White Sox didn't want to wait that long, because on June 4, 2009, he made his major league debut....

White Sox 2009: Alexei Ramirez
2009-10-14 14:00:00

White Sox 2009: Octavio Dotel
2009-10-13 14:00:00
When Octavio Dotel signed a two-year, $11 million deal two years ago with the White Sox, it wasn't one of Kenny Williams brighter deals. Guaranteeing that much money to a guy that had thrown just 56 innings in the previous three seasons combined is never smart. To expect him to stay healthy, let alone earn the money, was wishful thinking....
White Sox 2009: Paul Konerko
2009-10-12 14:00:00
Going on 33 and coming off a dissapointing 2008 season, which included his first ever stint on the disabled list (oblique), Paul Konerko was at the stage of his career where you didn't really know what to expect....
Top Ten Former Cubs and White Sox in the Playoffs
2009-10-12 12:58:00
It's always interesting to watch the playoffs and see the familiar faces of players that have called Chicago their home at one time or another. This season is no different and you'll find both the White Sox and Cubs are well represented players of the past in this year's post season. 10. Chad GaudinRP - YankeesNot too much to say about Gaudin's time as a Cub except that he was a part of the package that brought Rich Harden to the team. He as let go at season's end thanks in large part to giving up 19 runs in only 24 innings pitched. ...
New Short Code White Paper: Everything You Didn?t Even Know To Ask
2009-10-10 11:50:00
Before I started writing about messaging technology, I wasn't sure what the phrase "short code" meant--even though I'd used them all the time as a consumer. So how can someone new to the space, even if (s)he is a seasoned vet of marketing, be expected to? That's why I'm excited about ...

White Sox Off-season Begins: Garcia Option Picked Up
2009-10-06 15:34:00
Kenny Williams made his first off-season decision, which will by far be his easiest one, and that's picking up the 2010 $1 million option on Freddy Garcia. With incentives, the deal could double to $2 million....
Odds & Ends: White Sox, Mets, Millwood, Marquis
2009-09-23 22:39:00
Another round of links... According to Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times, the entire White Sox coaching staff, including hitting coach Greg Walker, pitching coach Don Cooper, bench coach Joey Cora and first base coach Harold Baines, received contract extensions Wednesday afternoon that will keep them all with the club through 2011. The Dallas Morning News' Tom Cowlinshaw believes Kevin Millwood's $12 million option for 2010, which vested Monday, is a fine deal. "If you're general manager Jon Daniels or team president Nolan Ryan or manager Ron Washington and you're going to be judged next season by how much your team lives up to this overhyped notion that 2010 is the Rangers' year," Cowlinshaw writes, "you need Kevin Millwood on that wall." According to MLB.com's Carrie Muskat (via Twitter), Cubs players didn't find out about Milton Bradley's apology until his statement was released to the media Wednesday afternoon. That certainly won't help the level of perceived sinceri...
Are ?Black?and ?White? Inherently Racist Terms?
2009-09-23 21:33:00
They have always struck me as being such, given their histories and the overtones associated with them - both cultural and inherent.  White generally means good and black something bad. For myself I use geographical identity terms — African American, European, Asian American or national identity ones, e.g. Canadian, French Canadian, German, Irish — some of ...

Book Review: Speech-less: Tales Of A White House Survivor By Matt Latimer
2009-09-23 02:37:00
By Loyd Eskildson Finding himself with a law degree and lured by the upbeat themes of the Reagan revolution, Matt heads to Washington, D.C. and snares a series of jobs with powerful figures on Capitol Hill, beginning as an assistant for Senator Spencer Abraham (R, MI) for $25,000 in 1996. Two moves later Matt was with Senator Kyl (R, AZ), and then off to Secretary Rumsfeld's office as a speech writer. En route, Matt drops dirt on several prominent senators (Abraham, E. Dole, McCain) for various reasons  - detached/MIA, dumb, terrifying temper, and briefly comments on Ann Coulter (likes). Latimer was surprised to find Rumsfeld's hands tied on hiring decisions involving relatively low-level and reportedly less than stellar performers - the White House (Karl Rove) apparently had a long reach. Latimer was frustrated for a time by their Machiavellian machinations blocking him from meeting regularly with Sec. Rumsfeld. Latimer reports that he could have stayed with incoming Se...
No Future With White Sox For Jermaine Dye?
2009-09-22 23:54:00
The White Sox are unlikely to re-sign outfielder Jermaine Dye for the 2010 season, according to Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times. Dye faces a $12MM mutual option, which won't merit consideration for the Sox. A new contract at half that amount would be a tough sell, in my opinion. It's been a strange season for the 35-year-old - he was very good in the season's first three months, OK in July, and brutal in August and September. He has no explanation for the prolonged slump, which caused him to drop from Type A to B in the Elias rankings. It would be dangerous to suggest Dye is done based on roughly 175 plate appearances. His bat is worth risking a few million bucks, though his right field defense has been consistently awful. Unfortunately it's a crowded market for designated hitters.

White House Directs Artists to Tell Country “What to do & What to be

“You are the thought leaders,” the artists were told. “You are the ones that, if you create a piece of art or promote a piece of art or create a campaign for a company, and tell our country and our young people sort of what to do and what to be in to; and what’s ...

BIGHOLLYWOOD.com: White House Uses Nat?l Endowment for the Arts To Advance
2009-09-21 20:42:00
Here’s the news Dan was referring to earlier today. The NEA [National Endowment for the Arts] and the White House did encourage a handpicked, pro-Obama arts group to address politically controversial issues under contentious national debate. That fact is irrefutable. This practice has never been the historical role of the NEA. The NEA?s role is to support ...
