Arguments for Drafting a Wide Receiver

It’s amazing… two weeks ago, drafting a wide receiver in the first round was a “hot topic” among Broncos fans. I intentionally scheduled this discussion for near last for that reason. Needless to say, recent developments have rendered the conversation a little less engaging. But carry on I shall! There isn’t a flashier ...
Tampa Bay Bucs? David Boston Pleas to Reckless Driving
2008-04-18 07:25:00
St. Petersburg, Florida. Wide receiver David Boston of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers ends his sojourn through the criminal justice system today. Boston and the prosecution agreed to a plea bargain that reduced the original criminal charge of DUI to the crime of Reckless Driving. Judge William Overton imposed the following punishment for the Reckless Driving conviction: 6 months probation Attend DUI school Complete 50 hours of community service Pay $1,115.00 in fines and fees Boston has claimed his innocence on the DUI charge from the beginning, and apparently the reduced charge was offered because of video tape evidence. Boston’s driving and field sobriety tests were captured on film and benefited Boston. Video either makes or completely breaks a defendant’s case. Tampa Bay Buccaneers finally sign a Wide Receiver
2008-02-19 03:08:00
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have signed Pre-Season MVP Wide Receiver Paris Warren to a one year contract. Warren finished the Pre-Season with 15 Catches for 191 Yards and 4 Touchdowns. He averaged over 12 yards a catch and was a lock to make the Bucs Final Roster cuts, but a freak leg injury ended Paris' dream Pre-season run. A dislocated ankle stopped Warren from potentially cracking the Bucs Gameday roster in '07. Paris on his recovery: "I'm doing good," Warren said. "I'm done with rehab. I'm just working on strengthening right now. I'm ready to go, I wouldn't want to be anywhere else." - Bucs Beat With David Boston finally out of the picture and WRs Michael Clayton-Maurice Stovall not seizing their opportunities, the door is wide open for Paris Warren to claim the roster spot he earned in August. I'm sure Paris is keeping a close watch on the Bucs Wide Receiver talks this off-season as will his fan base. I for one would like to see Paris get a shot to start, but if the Buc...

Buccaneers primed to acquire a Wide Receiver and Tight End this Off-Season?
2008-02-14 04:39:00
With QB Jeff Garcia, LB Derrick Brooks, and CB Ronde Barber only having a couple seasons left in a Buccaneers jersey, we're clearly in a Win-Now position. There's very few mobile veteran QB's in the NFL that can step in and command a team like Jeff Garcia has thus far. I believe GM Bruce Allen has to pull a Blockbuster Trade and acquire a Top Flight Wide Receiver. Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald fits that mold. Oh he's going to cost more than I'm sure the Glazers would like to spend (14.5 mil in '08 and 17.3 mil in '09), but he's also 24 years old, averages over 1,100 yards a season, and has proved to be durable over his short NFL career. Fitzgerald brings an excellent work ethic and character to the playing field. The bigger question might be what the Cardinals want for Larry and whether they're even interested in trading the phenom... My guess is they're not, but Allen has to turn over every stone. To be the best, you have to pay and acquire the best. The David Bos...

Discussing the Needs: Wide Receiver
2008-01-22 06:04:00
We previously looked at the quarterback position.  Now we will look at the receiver position. Current Players on Roster Marty Booker Ted Ginn Jr. Derek Hagan Kerry Reed Chandler Williams Dolphin Free Agents Greg Camarillo (exclusive-rights free agent) Current Situation The only sure lock to be on the opening day roster for the Miami Dolphins at the WR position is Ted Ginn.  Ginn is coming off his rookie season which, to many, was quite ordinary.  In my opinion, thought, he surpassed expectations.  But we'll get into Ginn a lot more in a future post.   Marty Booker's future in Miami is very much in doubt despite being the only veteran receiver on the roster.  His 2008 cap number of $5.3 million is rather high for a player of his caliber and he can be cut at no cost to the Dolphins.  Derek Hagan, the next closest thing we have to a veteran, just finished his 2nd season in this league and, in my opinion, is progressing nicely.  In fact, he led ...
New study: Penis surgery makes you a better NFL wide receiver
2008-01-04 01:26:00
And by new study I mean something Clinton Portis said. Or it should become academic gospel in virtue of CP saying it, anyways. First, from Covering the Redskins: When asked how health has affected the season of Santana Moss, Clinton Portis joked, "now that he has gotten over his circumcision, he's doing a lot better.. You can tell by the way he is running." Portis and Moss are both ironically, feeling their best since the beginning of the season now, a big part of the reason the Skins offense has awakened in recent weeks.. Moss was saddled through the summer with hamstring and groin issues, he also suffered a heel injury mid season.. Portis missed the summer sessions with knee tendonitis after struggling through '06 with a dislocated shoulder and subsequently a hand injury.. I think Bram Weinstein is a genius. Immediately after dropping the huge bomb shell that is the alleged Santana Moss circumcision -- which he denies, kind of sort of -- Bram (probably unintentionally) equivocat...

Raiders Daute Culpepper Misses Wide Open Wide Receiver Johnnie Lee Higgins
2007-11-18 23:10:00
You know, I've always believed that teams have their quarterback's just throw up the ball and hope someone comes down with it on their side at the end of a tight game. But I think it's become habit and so much so that quarterbacks miss wide open receivers on the way to the end zone. The Oakland Raiders Daute Culpepper missed a wide open Wide Receiver Johnnie Lee Higgins (15) while dropping back to throw the hail mary pass.I just watched a replay of the final play and the obvious was in full view: #15 was 10 yards in front of the next closest Vikings defender. He makes a catch; Raiders win. But Dante never saw him. Just another small reason the Raiders have two wins this year.

NFL Groupies Beware: Lions Wide Receiver Roy Williams Is A Scumbag. . . (No
2007-10-03 23:46:00
Not that NFL players are known for romancing their mistresses and groupies but those looking to nail an NFL player should probably avoid Roy Williams. While groupies certainly seem to get off on the wham bam thank you maam type of thing, in the case of Roy Williams it's more of a wham and a bam without the thank you. Nevertheless, he does show gratitude towards his pizza delivery guy:"There's no such thing as a tip. But I am really polite and I say 'Thank you sir.' . . . The pizza man knows, when he comes to my address, he's coming for free."While he may not tip, Williams does show dates a good time:"If you're on a date and she wants to go to a nice place, what do you do?I might just take her to the casino and get her a free buffet. If I did take a date out to a nice place, I'd take her to a nice place, like a Red Lobster or something. It wouldn't be Morton's or nothing like that."I'd like to think that this type of behavior is isolated. The reality is we all know its no...
Week Two Wide Receiver Decisions Results
2007-09-21 18:27:00
Last week's decisions to start or sit WRs did not work out so well based on KC Joyner's grading system. Texan WR Andre Johnson's 1120 yd/2 TD effort will always rank amongst the best performances by a WR in any given week. To have a negative score on that effort will always be wrong. Titans' WR Brandon Jones caught five passes for 57 yards. In a typical PPR, that is ten points. A -1 score makes that a miss, and, in combination with Arnaz Battle's positve score and dud of a week, that judgment is further solidified. If Jones is such a bad reciever, he should not outproduce a possession receiver like Battle who has a favorable match-up. All said, the grades did not help with any decisions. With 12.5% of the season to look at, some adjustments to off-season grades is likely in the offing. I'll be curious to see if this helps with the predicitve ability of the system. Fantasy Football Week Two Wide Receiver Decisions - Arnaz Battle
2007-09-14 20:36:00
This week's group of WRs I need to choose amongst has a new addition - San Francisco's Arnaz Battle. He replaces the injured, and disappointing, DJ Hackett. With 5 receptions last week (four of the 49ers' seven passing 1st downs were amongst the five), Battle is receiver who can be relied upon to catch several balls per week. He isn't much different than the Bears' Muhsin Muhammad in fantasy production, but, relative to what is available in a 12-team PPR, 7 man reserve league that starts a Flex, Battle is the best the pool has to offer. Throw-in last season's 70% Catch Rate per PFP2007, and Battle offers some expectations of consistent production. Surprisingly, he grades out in KC Joyner's system as one of my better options of my seven WRs for Week Two. Also in a good/great match-up is Muhammad against the Andre Johnson-scorched Patrick Surtain. While I couldn't sit either Tory Holt or Andre Johnson despite their challenging match-ups, Battle and Muhammad will make the choic...
Week One Wide Receiver Decisions Results
2007-09-13 21:35:00
Last week, I provided a table with Football Scientist K.C. Joyner's match-ups and grades for my WRs in one of my fantasy football leagues in order to get an idea of who to start at my Flex position. As something I intend to do each week, I figured it would be wise to revisit the prior weeks' information to determine if the "advice" was correct. WRTeamAdvRecYdsTDRight? However, I suspect the DJ Hackett injury late in the second quarter saved KC from being wrong. For my purposes, I am testing the hypothesis that the match-ups look most reliable when the Advantage is greater than one. (Remember each WR/DB only gets a grade of 1 to four. The best match-up would be a +/-3 as a result.) I will get my Week Two match-ups done late tonight/tomorrow and see what results.
Jon Jansen leaves void filled by Wide Receiver
2007-09-11 23:20:00
The big news from Sunday's game is, of course, the Jansen injury. Per the Official Site the word is grim: First, though, he has a long rehab--potentially 3-4 months--ahead of him. Jansen suffered a fractured dislocation of his right ankle in Sunday's season opener against Miami at FedExField. "Certainly it's a big loss for us," head coach Joe Gibbs said. "I felt like Jon made unusually good preparation this year. He hadn't missed a snap in practice. He hadn't missed a snap in games. It's just one of those things that can happen. We hate it." And that's exactly what happened: Jansen is on IR per Redskins Insider. [Jansen is on IR per RI.] The question then turns to who replaces Jansen on the line, where we have a number of options, apparently, though Todd Wade wasn't one of them on Sunday. As of this moment he has zero starts this season. His fall from grace includes being the favorite at the vacated guard position, since filled by Pete Kendall, to being the backup at tac...

Week One Starting Wide Receiver Decisions
2007-09-06 13:55:00
One the the big selling points of K.C. Joyner's Scientifc Football 2007 is the level of detail that goes into analyzing the passing game on offense and defense. As such, it could prove to be quite valuable for fantasy players who have a plethora of WRs and no obvious way to select who to start and who to sit. I've listed the WRs on my fantasy squad, Orlovsky's O, along with the DBs SF2007 matches-up with them. This league is a PPR and starts two WRs along with a Flex. Fantasy Football Wide Receiver Sleepers
2007-08-24 21:00:00
Today I am giving you my wide receiver sleepers. I have already listed my quarterback sleepers and my running back sleepers.Vincent JacksonSo many people are calling him a sleeper, you have to be careful drafting him. If you reach for him he can lose his "sleeper status". You also have to remember the Chargers haven't had a feature receiver since maybe Tony Martin in the 90's. You may be saying "who?", exactly! Don't put too much stock into Jackson.Joe HornSince no one really wants to touch anyone Falcon related you may be able to get value out of Horn. I think Horn can show he still has something and Atlanta is lucky to have him.New Orleans ReceiversI think you will be safe taking any Saints receivers. Obviously Colston isn't a sleeper anymore, but Devery Henderson and Terrance Copper are also options as 2nd, 3rd and 4th receivers for your team.Other mentions for wide receiver sleepers (not from me) are Ronald Curry and of course Moss. Good luck with those!
Training Camp Breakdown - Wide Receiver

Scouts, Inc. Breaks It Down - Wide Receiver
2007-07-24 14:42:00
Wide Receiver takes cneter stage in our continuing break down of what Scouts, Inc. thinks of each roster in the National Football League.  For those of you just joining us, I am averaging out the rankings Scouts, Inc is giving to each position to come to an overall ranking.  Sure, I won't win any math achievement awards but it's fun nonetheless. Here are the Receivers --   7.  Denver Broncos There is a noticeable drop-off after the top six receiver groups. Rod Smith has been a rock of consistency for Mike Shanahan over the past decade or so, but the veteran is beginning to show signs of slipping. Jay Cutler still will look his way when the chips are down, but Brandon Marshall should surpass Smith as the starter opposite Javon Walker. Marshall is a budding star with great tools. He will see a lot of single coverage next year and could make himself a household name in this offense. Walker is a legitimate No. 1 wide receiver who possesses an outstanding combinat...
Training Camp Positional Preview: Wide Receiver
2007-07-23 07:13:00
Let's continue on with our positional previews by turning our attention to the wide receivers. Chris Chambers: 5'11, 210, 7th year What a 7 years it has been for Chris Chambers. He's had many ups and downs. Dolphin fans constantly argue about whether or not he is a true #1 receiver or if he's just going to end up being a career underachiever. But let's look at what we do know. First and foremost, he's got good speed and acceleration, and an unreal jumping ability. He also has a knack for making simply unbelievable catches. However, we all know how he tends to drop the easy passes. His route running is also questioned at times, as he seems to just disappear for long stretches of time during a game. This year is going to be his make-or-break season. For the first time in his career, he'll have a very accurate quarterback throwing to him. He also should benefit from Cam Cameron and his offensive system. Chambers is likely to line up all over the field, from outs...
A look at the receivers
2007-07-21 17:56:00
After Fox Sports recently took a critical look at the Green Bay Packers receiving corps, it was time the local media did the same.Today's editions of the Green Bay Press-Gazette and the Wisconsin State Journal both take a look at the state of the Packers' wideouts.Pete Dougherty of the Green Bay Press-Gazette writes, "Some of the fate of the Packers' passing game rides on whether (Greg) Jennings can become a productive and occasionally dangerous player." Meanwhile, Jason Wilde of the Wisconsin State Journal states, "The darkhorse is veteran Robert Ferguson, who missed all but four games last season because of a Lisfranc foot injury and could be nearing the end of the line in Green Bay. But if Ferguson can recapture the form he showed late in the 2003 season, he could be the additional playmaker the offense is searching for."Click the links to take a further look into the state of the Packers' future at wide receiver.
Is Wide Receiver Overated?
2007-07-04 00:03:00
Jon Kitna's remarks last week regarding the impact of rookie Calvin Johnson, got me thinking that maybe the wide receiver position in the NFL is extremely overated.Kitna had said that Johnson's addition to the Lions will help them win at least ten games. In the NFL, the wide receiver does not have as great an impact as you might think. He only touches the ball five to ten times a game. On the other hand, a quarterback handles the ball every single play, and a running back usually touches it at least twenty times a game. It's not that the receiver is not important, its just that one great receiver can not dominate every play like a quarterback or running back can. Teams need a solid receiving core, not just one superstar.Besides their limitation in touches, receivers can only be as good as their offensive line and quarterback. If you place the best receiver on the Oakland Raiders, even he won't manage to get open in under two seconds. While he is running his route his quarterback i...
Breaking Down The Roster -- Part 9 -- Wide Receiver
2007-06-29 16:02:00
The Broncos head into 2007 with a talented, if inexperienced, group of receivers.  The depth might be the best the Broncos have had in, let's say, 5 years or so, and that bodes well for a young quarterback preparing for his first full season as the starter.  There are a host of questions, however, because with youth comes uncertainty.  But there is also exuberance and optimism.  And not since Rod Smith and Ed McCaffrey were lining up in the late 90's have the Broncos enjoyed the type of threats they can unleash on defenses now.  Only time will tell if the youngsters in the group pan out, but with an able-armed quarterback delivering the ball, the Broncos receivers should enjoy their best season in years.  Let's break it down.   Rod Smith (6-0, 200) -- What more can be said about Smith, one of the best undrafted free agents ever to step foot on a football field.  Since breaking into the League in 1995(Smith spent 1994 on the Practice S...

Enough wide receivers already?

After drafting two wide receivers in the 2007 NFL draft, the Green Bay Packers currently have 12 wide receivers on their roster.Obviously not all 12 are going to make the opening day roster, but what is the team to do with all these players?Common sense tells me that the five wide receivers will make the opening day roster and the team will keep at least two of them on the practice squad. So who's going to stay and who's going to go ...Donald Driver - The unquestioned no. 1 wide receiver on the team. Driver isn't getting any younger, but I think the Packers are comfortable with Driver as the team's go-to-guy as long as Brett Favre is around.Greg Jennings - Jennings's ankle injury hurt him more than anybody is willing to let on last year. Expect a big year from Jennings in 2007 as he recovers from his injury.Robert Ferguson - Ferguson is a goner. After drafting two receivers, there's no way Ferguson is in the team's plans in 2007. He's trade bait if anybody'll take him. More ...

Packers draft a wide receiver
2007-04-29 04:16:00
With their first choice in the third round, the Green Bay Packers selected wide receiver James Jones of San Jose State.New Era Scouting's report on Jones says, "Jones really came on as a senior when he had 70 receptions for 893 yards and eight touchdowns. Played well in big games. Had two touchdowns in the New Mexico Bowl and a touchdown in the Hula Bowl. Is also able to return punts and averaged 11.5 yards per return. With only great production as a senior, some wonder will if he's a product of head coach Dick Tomey's system. Can also long-snap."Jones was a big part of the resurgent season enjoyed by the Spartans in 2006. With their first winning season in years, the Jones was a big reason for the upset win in the New Mexico Bowl over the home team New Mexico Lobos. The fact that the dude can long snap is impressive.Photo credit: Jim Bates for The Seattle Times

Calvin Johnson is viewed as the clear cut, hands down, can't miss prospect coming out of the 2007 NFL Draft . . . Here's Footballs Future to elaborate:"Johnson is a special talent. His combination of size and body control is rare. Game after game, he makes an amazing catch look easy. He will win out against any corner in a one on one situation because of his combination of size, body co...
