Porto recebe conferência internacional sobre wikis.
2008-09-04 21:48:00
EVE convenes real world council, how does it affect wikis?
2008-06-09 19:30:00
According to Kotaku, EVE Online, the MMO space combat game, has convened a real world council to represent its community of players. The council meets in Iceland (home of developer CCP) and is called the Council of Stellar Management. They rep a gamer community approaching 250,000, according to CCP which bills the stellar managers as "the first democratically-elected governing body in a virtual world.""The CSM will empower players with a formal communications channel to directly impact the development of their society as it grows more and more advanced," a release says. What does this mean for Wikis? One question facing Wikimedia right now is how to define what the community is. There are of course a multitude of plans for various Wikicouncils, volunteer councils, provisional councils, etc. None of them yet know who the community is they are representing. How EVE fares with their community council could be a good indicator of where Wikimedia's community will end up going with a counc...

You already know the world's biggest wiki, Wikipedia, but did you know that wikis come in other shapes and sizes too? We are going to be using a wiki in Hist 100 this semester. I will email a link to students once I have finished setting it up and obtained passwords for everyone. For now, though, I would like to share this introductory Wiki tutorial by The Common Craft Show, "Wikis in Plain English": Besides using the course wiki, you might want to set one up for yourself. They can be handy for keeping notes or doing group projects. My family uses one to coordinate plans.© 2007 Mark R. Stoneman

Users Bring Archive Contents Online in Britain
2007-11-26 02:41:00
Gavin Robinson at Investigations of a Dog points to an interesting new project of the National Archives in Great Britain. Over the last week I?ve been exploring the possibilities of Your Archives, the wiki based site set up by the UK National Archives where users can contribute their own knowledge and transcripts of documents. The site has huge possibilities, and so far I feel like I?ve only scratched the surface. To start with I?ve been mostly concentrating on First World War records, as the Great War Forum provides both an immediate audience and lots of potential contributors. Getting these people involved could make a very big difference to the project. [read full post] This sounds like an exciting project indeed. Has anyone heard of similar efforts being made by other archives?© 2007 Mark R. Stoneman

WIKIS: Net Egalitarianism Cuts Both Ways
2007-08-22 03:19:00
People lie on the Interweb.  I know, it's hard to believe.  I can remember when we used to tout the fact that three guys in a coffee shop could create a presence on the web that rivaled Fortune 500 companies.  The Internet was our great equalizer in the world of ideas.  Little did we know that as we quietly sipped our lattes that the big, bad industrial machine would use this very tool against us.  Such is destined to be the legacy of the wiki.  A Wired blog recently reported on how some in government and industry may be using the wisdom of crowds to sabotage what has become a grand experiment in data sharing, specifically, Wikipedia.  While some of those contributing to the so-called WikiWatch may see a conspiracy behind every edit, the obvious abuses by some organizations makes one wonder if the open wiki model can survive....or could it be that some experts might actually believe they know a bit more than rank amateurs?- Hutch

12 Popular Wikis that actually ‘WORK’
2007-04-30 00:04:00
We all love wikipedia: it’s comprehensive, 100% user-edited (aka wiki-style), up-to-date, rather objective, and totally free. It’s a perfect wiki-powered system. While it’s by far the most popular one, it’s not the only wiki-style website that ‘works’. There are plenty of other successful wikis, focused on specific areas i.e, book summaries, cooking, HowTo’s and even ‘bullshit’. So, here you go, popular wikis that have something to offer. Popular Wikis (1) Wikipedia - all-favorite, biggest online encyclopedia (2) WikiTravel - world-wide travel guide, covers destination guides, hotels and resorts (3) WikiHow - ‘How-To’ manuals for the problems of everyday life. (‘HowTo’s: Hack a Coke Machine, Get Six Pack Abs, How to choose a Debt Management program, etc.) (4) WikiBooks - huge collection of user-edited, open-content textbooks and guides. (Textbooks: Chess guide, Learn French … ) (5) CookBookWiki - recipes and cooking related wiki. Sections include: dishes,...

2007-02-13 18:18:02
Download Episode 4 Headlines According to a study by Outsell Inc., a leading marketing research firm, click fraud now costs online advertisers nearly $1 billion per year, with advertisers believing almost 15% of all paid click-throughs are fraudulent. Among the studie?s other findings, 75% of online advertisers claim they have been victims of click fraud. It is estimated that Google and Yahoo, the two major players in the pay-per-click market, have lost up to $500 million in revenue as a result of click fraud. The New York Times is reporting the results of a major SPAM study. The study found that Spam messages promoting pornography are 280 times as effective in getting recipients to click on them as messages advertising pharmaceutical drugs, which are the next most effective type of spam. The third most successful variety is spam advertising Rolex watches, with a 0.0075 percent click-through rate. Major analysis for the study was provided by CipherTrust, a large manufacturer of d...

The Land of Real Estate Wikis
2007-01-31 15:03:01
Inman has a new real estate wiki. At first blush, I thought that made three real estate wikis - Zillow Wiki, InmanWiki and Realki, an RE wiki our friends from Realbird developed - and I concluded that real estate wikiworld was utterly saturated. Lo and behold, Realki redirected to InmanWiki... Inman just acquired Realki and at least it's a good readership match. However, I think wikis need to evolve into relevancy. In December's Yankee Blog Swap, I authored a guest post at the Zillow blog called The Potential of Real Estate Wikis. The problem with wikis is they are limited by their current role as authoritative information sources. They are like encyclopedias, and it's hard to add more relevant content to an encyclopedia. Second, two real estate encyclopedias seem redundant - like Grolier's and World Book, who needs both sets? - and that is why there is only one Wikipedia. Finally, the construct of a wiki is difficult to browse and to find "fresh content". InmanWiki's main page...
Tale of two Wikis
2006-09-12 16:00:13
Heard on NPR this morning about Wikipedia and its viability and how the online encyclopedia is open for misuse.  Critics, including some experts, say it’s only a matter of time before the interest in the site fades and users are drawn to another fad, leaving the repository to collapse in on itself. Someone should have told founder Jimmy Wales.  Apparently he feels his little unknown, quiet and tenuous little site is more important that the critics do. Good for you, Jimmy. It’s also interesting to spotlight the discord among the media and how differing outlets, biases notwithstanding, can find just what nuggets they need in order to tell their own story. At which point savvy readers say, ‘Yeah, and?” Carry on.
