Rock & Roll Feature: The Traveling Wilburys Vol 1

I’m a rock and roller, so this column is a way for me to feature a different album that I like, from different genres every month. When it comes to “super groups”, I’ve always been partial to the short lived Traveling Wilburys. Originally coming together in the late 80s to record a b-side for one of George Harrison’s singles, the band consisted of Harrison, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne as the Wilburys, and only released one album with all five members called Vol. 1. Roy Orbison died of a heart attack shortly after it’s release, making these songs some of his last recordings. Although the remaining four would go on to record another album, Vol. 3, I’ve always felt that their first is the better of the two and is also a amazing album overall. 2007-08-29 21:53:00 You may have already seen this, but it is new to me. Ken Wilbur narrates a video of his own experience using neurofeedback while navigating various meditative states. From YouTube: 'We asked Ken to do a short 10-minute commentary on these various meditative states and the corresponding brain-wave patterns that are shown on the EEG machine in the video. Ken enters four meditative states (nirvikalpa closed eyes, nirvikalpa open eyes, sahaj, and mantra-savikalpa), each of which has a very distinctive brain-wave pattern. In his commentary, Ken emphasizes that the patterns shown on this machine may or may not be typical, but they do emphasize that profound consciousness states can be evoked at will, and these show immediate correlation in brain-wave patterns.'
In Re: Wilbur Miller's Kool-Aid Essay
2007-08-27 06:40:00 Longtime Pittsburgh Pirates fan Wilbur Miller recently posted a plea to Robert Nutting entitled "Don't Drink the Kool-Aid, Bob" wherein Miller's 10,285 characters outlined many of the reasons he is an understandably frustrated fan. The bottom line theme to Miller's essay was for Nutting to remove any blinders he may have on to see past what Miller describes as Littlefield's continual spin on the value in the Pirates farm system. It's an intriguing read but left me wondering why Miller would waste his time composing such an essay when the Nuttings have been at the root of the problem at least the last four years. For instance, in early 2003 Nutting was installed as the Chairman of the Board as the Nuttings were spending their capital buying limited partner shares left and right instead of infusing one-million into operations to keep someone called Aramis Ramirez for the balance of the year. And it was a rock album that disappeared, along with its successor, for a decade despite the fame it achieved. Now the two volumes of "The Traveling Wilburys" are being reissued thanks to efforts made by Harrison's widow Olivia, bringing back to public notice what had started as a kind of fantasy camp for rock stars.

2007-03-27 16:31:00 By Brian Wilbur-March 27, 2007I am glad that Mikkel Kessler had the opportunity to showcase his talents on HBO. Up until Saturday, he was the best fighter to never have been shown on American television. His performance against Librado Andrade was a masterful boxing display. He dominated Andrade like Joe Calzaghe dominated Jeff Lacy last year, and by the way, I would favor Andrade over Lacy if that fight happened tomorrow. You can think of Librado as the Sam Peter of the super middleweight division. He is a power-punching brawler that is impossible to knockout because of his granite chin. Kessler was smart and did not try to out slug Andrade, although he may have been able to win that kind of war. Mikkel used movement and an excellent jab to control the distance. Andrade was exactly is the position that Kessler wanted him for every minute of the twelve round affair. That is the epitome of ring generalship.Another world class attribute of the Danish champion is his punching accuracy....
