Rangers miss chance to gain in wild card (AP)
2009-09-23 03:47:00
Trevor Cahill reached his target of 10 wins. Now Oakland's rookie right-hander is aiming for more. Cahill scattered six hits over 5 2-3 innings to win his fourth straight decision and got plenty of support from his teammates, who stayed on a roll offensively in a 9-1 victory over the Texas Rangers on Tuesday night.
Surging Braves win, 5 out of wild card (AP)
2009-09-23 03:12:00
Puffing away on a cigar, Braves manager Bobby Cox eased back in a chair with one leg resting on his desk. He peered up at the television to watch an out-of-town game with postseason implications, San Francisco at Arizona. "We're doing everything we can. We need somebody else to lose once in a while," Cox said.
Rockies hit 3 HRs, extend wild-card lead (AP)
2009-09-20 02:20:00
Blowing leads has been an uncomfortable trait of the Colorado Rockies lately. They did it again Saturday night, only this time, they came back in a hurry and went on to pound the Arizona Diamondbacks 10-4 and open a little breathing space in their wild-card race. The victory, combined with San Francisco's 12-1 loss at ...

Second String Pitchers Doom Red Sox, Who Are Officially The AL Wild Card Te
2008-09-27 11:20:00
Well, it had to happen sooner or later, but it happened Friday night at Fenway Park. The New York Yankees demolished the Boston Red Sox by a score of 19-8. David Pauley, starting in place of Daisuke Matsuzaka because of a pesky rain delay, was ineffective, and the bullpen, summoned in the third inning, continued his bumbling and stumbling. The less said about this one, the better. Because of that rain, though, Daisuke Matsuzaka will start in this afternoon's contest in place of Josh Beckett, who will make an abbreviated go at it on Sunday. But there was real bad news that was much worse than a lopsided meaningless game against the out-of-it Yankees. Mike Lowell reagravated his hip injury with a third inning swing and is a definite maybe from here on out. Here's what he and his manager had to say..."I would defer to we'll see what time says," Lowell said. "By no means do I think I'm owed a roster spot just because I've played here. If I'm not going to do anything that can help ...

Pigskin Pick'em Playoffs - Wild Card Results/Divisional Preview [EdMcGon]
2008-01-09 10:51:00
Sorry for the delay, but here are the results from last weekend's NFL playoff picks:EdMcGon - 3Bill Barker - 3Audio Dave - 3David Stefanini - 3Robert A. George - 2J. Mark English - 1For this week's picks, remember to get them in before 4:30 pm EST on Saturday. Here are my picks:Seattle Seahawks at Green Bay Packers: I certainly under-rated the Hawks last week, but I cannot see them beating the Pack on the frozen tundra.Jacksonville Jaguars at New England Patriots: The Jags may give the Pats a hard time, but expect the Pats to pull it out in the end. The Pats just seem to have an extra gear they turn on whenever they need it.San Diego Chargers at Indianapolis Colts: This one has upset potential, but I can't pick the inconsistent Chargers over the fairly consistent Colts.New York Giants at Dallas Cowboys: The Giants have the momentum, plus they play better on the road. The Cowboys stumbled at the end of the season, losing two of their last three games. But the Boys are still the be...
SOHH Sports: Aftermath Mondays: Giants - DON?T GET GASSED, Wild Card Wrap,
2008-01-07 06:11:00
Yeea, my Giants put it on those Bucs, 24-14, but fellow Giants' fans, like Flex says - DON'T GET GASSED! Listen, don't be stupid, I'm happy as hell that the Giants didn't disappoint like they did in the past couple of postseasons and finally won a playoff game, their first in seven years! Yikes! But once again fellow Giants' fans - DON'T GET GASSED! The Giants may be a Wild Card team, but fact of the matter is they had a better record (10-6) than those Tampa Bay motherf**kers (9-7). Secondly, they did what they were supposed to do - use that battering ram of a running back, Brandon Jacobs, to punish the Bucs' defense. Wild Card mission accomplished! Chuuch! With the win, the Giants move to 8-1 on the road this season. Very Niiice! But to improve to 9-1, they'll need to upset the Dallas Cowboys. After losing to them Boys twice during the regular season, we all know that ain't gonna be easy, especially considering the D is going to make Eli Manning beat 'em. I...
Wild Card Weekend, Part 3
2008-01-06 19:03:00
I'm not really into it after yesterday.  I ripped a pillow by throwing it, almost cracked my coffee table by slamming my hands down on it, and kept my laptop far away (for fear of throwing it across the room.)  Anyway, here's a quick preview of today's games. Think of this as Sunday's Open Playoff Thread. Sunday New York (football) Giants @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers (-3) - 1:00 pm EST on FOX Tampa has been resting since week 16.  Garcia has played only a few series so his ailing back shouldn't be an issue.  He's been a Giant killer, going all the way back to his days in San Fran.  Last year, he led Philly past the Giants in Philly for a Wild Card win.  For the lack of a better term, he's got their number. New York played everyone against the Pats and came up just short.  I'm not big on moral victories, but that loss should have boosted their confidence heading into the playoffs.  Problem is, they lost C O'Hara (listed as doubtful), wh...
Wild Card Weekend Open Thread: Sunday Edition
2008-01-06 18:14:00
First, let's quickly touch on yesterday's games. One was quite entertaining while the other was a bit of a snoozer. For the Redskins, I guess Todd Collins came back to earth and realized just who he was. One thing that stuck out to me was just how underrated that Seattle defense is. They can really get pressure on the quarterback. I'm very interested in seeing how the Seahawks perform next week in Green Bay. It should be an entertaining game. As for last night's game, I was very disappointed in how the Steelers performed, especially Ben Roethlisberger. I expected a much better outing from him. But he made some poor decisions and, at times, looked almost lost out there. Maybe it was the lack of a running game frustrating Ben and making him feel like he had to make plays. Regardless, bad job by Big Ben. I was also very disappointed in the play calling on Pittsburgh's 2nd to last drive. They had the ball and a one point lead with 3:43 left to play. And they call 3 ...
NFL Wild Card Playoffs: Open Thread
2008-01-05 20:42:00
Another year, another season in which Bills fans will be watching the playoffs Bills-less. So if you're looking to discuss this weekend's playoff action without having to deal with the jealousy of talking to fans of playoff teams, this is the spot for you. I won't be here to moderate the thread as I usually do - let's face it, without the Bills, it's hard to get overly excited - but I thought I'd put this space out there for y'all anyways. I might pop in with a comment or two if something sweet happens, so say hey in the comments if you're bored. Prediction time! Washington Redskins (9-7) at Seattle Seahawks (10-6) - How can you not pull for the Redskins in this one? They're playing in honor of a fallen teammate, and they've won four in a row behind former Bills QB Todd Collins. (How sweet would it be to end the season saying the last team to beat Washington was, in fact, Buffalo?) With that said, Seattle is a very difficult place to play - and the Seahawks have t...

NFL Wild Card Weekend Playoff Picks
2008-01-05 19:49:00
Greetings,Great Blog Content can be hard to come up with at times. But, since I understand our target demographic, I feel that two scantily clad women, one holding a football, the other a set of plump gazombas, will suffice for any witty repertoire I may provide. (Thanks Aldawg for the inspiration)Playoff Picks:Gruden is a roided-up doofus. I hope he loses. I'll take the Giants every single day of the week getting three.Robnosticator's Pick: Giants +3 ( 2 Pierogis)The Titans play in the toughest division in the NFL---The AFC South!!!!!!. Three teams from the division are in the playoffs and even the craptastic Houston Texans were .500 this year. San Diego (which loosely translated means whales vagina) came from a division where they were the only team to have a winning record!!!!! Give me a break; The Bolts are overated and no way do they deserve to be a 10 point favorite. Robnosticator's Pick: Titans +10 ( 2 Pierogis)The Steelers are get more credit due to their storied history ...
Wild Card Weekend, Part 2
2008-01-05 19:06:00
SATURDAY Jacksonville @ Pittsburgh (+2.5) - Saturday, 8:00 pm EST on NBC Welcome to January. (From here.) Game 2 tonight will be in the wind and rain (possibly) of Heinz Field in Pittsburgh.  Weather.com says 44 degrees and 50% chance of precipitation at game time.  (Just as an aside, it also says 46 degrees and 100% for Seattle.)  So what does a cold, rainy game mean for these two teams?  Nothing we didn't already expect. Jacksonville is going to run the ball.  And when they're done doing that, they're going to put Jones-Drew in and run some more.  And after that, Fred Taylor gets another few carries.  And after all that, Gerrard will drop back to pass... and then scramble for yet another rush.  They were 2nd in the NFL with 149.4 yards per game, behind only MIN.  I would be surprised if JAX throws more than 20-25 times unless they fall behind very, very early.  They finished the year at a very mediocre 218.4 yards per game passi...
Wild Card Weekend Open Thread: Saturday Edition
2008-01-05 18:59:00
Even though the Dolphins are not involved, I will carry on the tradition I started last year and give my brief and sometimes pointless predictions to each playoff game this year. Last season, I went 9-2. This year, I hope to improve on that. But man, these some of these wild card matchups are tough games to call. Regardless, I'll do my best and please feel free to give us your predicitions down in the "comments" section. Washington Redskins at Seattle Seahawks To my surprise, it seems that many people like the Redskins to win this game. And I'm sure a lot of that has to do with that "team of destiny" idea following the terrible death of Sean Taylor earlier this year. Like many, I will be rooting for the Redskins. But I'm going to have to go with the Seahawks on this one. First of all, the Seahawks have experience. They are a veteran team who have plenty of playoff experience under their belts. Secondly, I think the Seahawks will do what teams haven't been able ...

Wild Card Weekend, Part 1
2008-01-04 17:59:00
The NFL playoffs begin this weekend, with your own WASHINGTON REDSKINS kicking things off Saturday afternoon in Seattle.  I'm going to be going through a quick preview of the games, starting on Saturday. SATURDAY Washington (-3.5) @ Seattle - 4:30pm EST on NBC Home of the Pacific Northwest Version the Professional Version the 12th Man. (image from here) This is probably the worst matchup either team could have had in the 1st round.  Washington is playing well going into the playoffs, but having to travel to Seattle is never easy.  It is by far the biggest homefield advantage for the Wild Card round, and might be the best in the NFC.  Seattle's defense is very average against the run (102.8 yards per game, good for 12th) and Collins negates their very good pass rush because of his quick release.  They have given up pass yards (219.1 per game) if you can stay on your feet long enough to get the pass off (4th in the NFL with 45 sacks, Patrick Kerney 2nd i...

I have to choke back a ton of laughter on this one - the Chargers received a 24-hour extension to sell their remaining tickets and avoid a TV blackout. [Rocky Mountain News] Their opponent for Sunday, the Titans, just lost their best tight end. Now they’ll be without their #1 WR, too. [Denver ...
Wild Card Weekend Playoff Predictions:
2008-01-04 16:45:00
I'm sitting here on this fine Miami Morning thinking about the Jags game when I realized I hadn't said a word about the other playoff games this weekend. So before we get into far more serious matters with our Jaguars, let's run through the rest of the weekend's games and take a completely irrational and irreverent look at what might happen. As usual, note that I use pretty absurd reasoning for my picks, and they should not be taken seriously, especially with money. SATURDAY GAMES - Washington Redskins @ Seattle Seahawks -- No sir, I just don't buy it. I love the idea of the Redskins in the playoffs. Coming back from all that adversity and those time outs. I think that the team has rallied around Joe Gibbs rather than fallen apart says a whole lot about the direction this team is going. But it's not this year, nope. The Redskins are going to go to Seattle and be reminded that they're not quite there yet and begin their offseason. Of course, the Redskins start that...
NFL Wild Card Spread Picks
2008-01-04 16:27:00
Quick NFL Picks: Seattle -3.5 Last week the statistical predictions only included one game and one winner! KC came back in the 4th quarter to tie it and lose the game but to cover the spread of 6 against the Jets. This week, of the 4 NFL wild card games, only 1 seems like a good bet and I personally like it because the spread has moved 1.5 points in the other direction. The game is Washington @ Seattle which bettors favor Seattle by 3.5 but originally it was a 5 point spread. The model has a solid 61% success rate of games with the spread between 2-4 for the home team and the estimate being within 2 points of the Vegas spread. Seattle if predicted to win by 5. Journalists are favoring Washington because they have "momentum", something that has been scientifically proven to be a fallacy. It is just random that a basketball player makes 50 free throws in a row or a team wins 4 games in a row. The relevant statistic is that the player is a 90% free throw shooter or a team has a 60%...
The Guru's Fearless Playoff Predicitons -- Wild Card Weekend
2008-01-04 13:16:00
Sure, the Broncos aren't in the playoffs, but that doesn't mean I can't continue predicting winners.  The playoffs, after-all, are my specialty and where the real money can be made.  Four games are on tap and I have the winner in all of them.  As always, feel free to give your thoughts as well.... SATURDAY GAMES - Washington Redskins @ Seattle Seahawks -- Washington is all the rage in the NFL right now, sparked by the tragic loss of Sean Taylor, the Redskins got hot in the right time and won their way into the playoffs.  Suddenly, football has not passed Joe Gibbs by and people actually think Todd Collins, yes, that Todd Collins can lead the Redskins deep into the playoffs.  Sometimes people just like to make things tougher than they really need to be.  Seattle was in a Super Bowl a couple seasons ago, and went on the road last year and gave the eventual NFC Champion Chicago Bears all they could handle.  Matt Hasslebeck might be the most unde...
Wild Card Games: Jaguars vs. Steelers
2008-01-04 10:32:00
Many believe that the Jacksonville Jaguars and Pittsburg Steelers match-up will be physical.  This will be a toe-to-toe battle and it will be fun to watch. The Steelers are formidable contender this year as their suffocating defense works well though we have to consider the Jaguars defense also. I believe that the Steelers will emerge as a ...
The NFL Picks Column: Wild Card Edition

Apparently, I've graduated from "Scribe" to "Analyst" at Bleacher Report. In celebration, I got stupid-drunk and wrote this wonderful picks column! In case you missed it, I've been pretty busy this week. I tried to provide hope to the hopeless by telling everyone why their teams were going to win this weekend. My first 2 part Bleacher Report column (part 1: NFC and part 2: AFC)!Now that I'm done shilling my own work, here's a couple of quick NFL news related items before I get to the picks:It's good to see the voters getting the post-season NFL awards correct for a change. So far Adrian Peterson winning offensive rookie of the year, with Joe Thomas in second, was right on the money. And Bill Belichick winning coach of the year was surprising considering how many people he ticked off, but dead right. How can you go 16-0 and not win coach of the year?Cam Cameron, we hardly knew ye. I'm just glad Parcells stayed away from the New England front office and coaching staff.I still th...

Titans' top receiver breaks ankle, will sit out wild-card game
2008-01-03 23:21:00
This injury to the Titans top wide receiver will severely hamper their ability to upset the AFC West champion Chargers. Associated Press NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Titans will be without top receiver Roydell Williams for the first round of the playoffs after he broke his right ankle in practice Wednesday.Coach Jeff Fisher said Thursday that Williams was having surgery to repair the bone at the base of the tibia, which will require a plate and screws. Williams was hurt during practice Wednesday, but was able to walk off the indoor practice field by himself.Fisher said X-rays showed the severity of the injury late Wednesday night. The Titans have already lost top tight end Bo Scaife after he suffered a lacerated liver in last week's win at Indianapolis.Williams was tied with Justin Gage for the team lead in receptions with a career-high 55. He was second with 719 yards for a team-high four touchdowns.Receiver Brandon Jones has been on injured reserve with a groin injury since D...

Pigskin Pick'em Playoffs - Wild Card Round [EdMcGon]
2008-01-01 06:58:00
As I mentioned in my previous post, it is time for the Pigskin Pick'em Playoffs! My picks for this weekend's games (with the game time shown):Redskins at Seahawks, Saturday, 4:30 p.m. ET: The Skins have the "mo", plus they are a better overall team.Jaguars at Steelers, Saturday, 8 p.m. ET: The Jags have already beaten the Steelers in Pittsburgh once this season. This will make twice.Giants at Buccaneers, Sunday, 1 p.m. ET: Both teams lost their last game of the season, but the Giants at least have to feel good about their performance. Add in the fact they get a road game to start the playoffs, and the Giants seem like a good pick to advance.Titans at Chargers, Sunday, 4:30 p.m. ET: The Chargers remind me of the recent Super Bowl winners who have charged out of the Wild Card round to win it all. They have all the talent to win it and they have the momentum going into the playoffs (a six game winning streak). If only Norv Turner wasn't their head coach. Still, they should have no tr...
All Hail the Wild Card
2007-12-31 20:09:00
The Angels have made the playoffs in 4 of the last 6 seasons, and at first glance this represents the most successful period of their history. But how much of that is due to the change in rules, realignment of the division and a wild card?Pretty much all of it. The early to mid 80's Angels, in the same format, would have been just as good. Here's a little revisionist history, adding the wild card to the 80's:1982: Angels win west, as they did in real life1983: A disaster either way1984: They were tied with the Twins with a 7th best 81-81 record, but would have won a weak west. Toronto (89 takes the east ahead of 3 other .500+ teams, Detroit, the only great team that year, takes the central. KC with 84 wins is out of the playoffs. Angels win a weak west with 81 wins, 4 ahead of Oakland, and Yankees get a wild card1985: A very good 1985 team finished 1 back of Kansas City, in revionist history they each get a division title.1986: AL west leaders as in real life. That's 4 West title...
Browns Win, Eliminating Broncos from Wild Card Race
