Thanks To BSNL – Urban Mobile WiMAX Is Now A Reality In India
2010-03-03 16:42:00
You must have heard a lot about WiMAX already. Now you can use it too. Thanks to BSNL, you will soon be able to browse the web anywhere with the country’s first mobile broadband – 4G Internet Access Network – The Urban Mobile WiMAX. BSNL was also the first to introduce 24 MBPS Broadband internet services in the country. BSNL commercially launched the service in Kerala in the presence of Union minister of state for Agriculture and Consumer Affairs K V Thomas. Over 900 BTS (Base Transmitting Stations) have been deployed to cover the entire state. Initially 450 of these BTS-es would be set up to cover all major cities, district headquarters and important towns at a project cost of about Rs 100 crore and another 450 BTS would be commissioned to cover the remaining towns, later. WiMAX boasts of 37 mbps wireless connectivity and provides features like high speed broad band connectivity anywhere, anytime for devices like Desktop, Laptop wire-free. The technology is s...

Another Hurdle In BSNL’s Rural WiMax Roll-out
2010-01-28 06:05:00
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd’s WiMax project has suffered a blow with its (BSNL’s) internal vigilance officer putting a stay on giving the project to one of the four shortlisted bidders. BSNL had received bids for its WiMax tender in November 2009. Earlier, BSNL had to cancel the tender twice. Vippalamritha Magnetic Components Ltd (VMC), a Hyderabad based company, fourth lowest bidder for the project, would be first interrogated for averred non-payment of duties by its parent company while importing equipment for an earlier BSNL contract. Prithvi Information Solution, the parent company of VMC, has been served a show cause notice by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence. “Since the investigation in this case is going on, it was requested that no order should be placed at this juncture with VMC,” stated an internal BSNL note. The allegations however, have been vehemently rebutted by the Company on grounds that a wrong interpretation of rules is causing this temporary hi...

Google Wants To Be Your 3G/Wimax Provider
2009-10-28 05:21:00
While 3G/Wimax might have been delayed for the nth time the interest its generating from all parts of the world for India is something else. Now it seems that even Google is looking at broadband wireless access (BWA) in the country and may participate in the upcoming 3G/WiMAX auction with an Indian partner. Google’s interest may stem from the fact that India’s broadband penetration is dismal at a paltry 6-7 million which means that majority of the growth would be driven by 3G and Wimax as far as internet penetration is concerned. Given how big the google products and brands are in India it makes sense for google to participate and evangelize the internet penetration story in this country. The next 50-100 million users in India would be first time users of internet and this segment would be quite different from the one that already uses the internet currently. This makes the role of an ISP important in providing services that encourage these users to log on and use the i...

BSNL Opening Bids For Rural WiMAX Project – Will The Internet Penetra
2009-08-17 06:46:00
BSNL’s plans to roll out wireless Internet technology, WiMAX to the rural areas will move a step ahead coming 25th when the bids from the vendors to commission the project shall be opened. This project would establish 7000 Common Service Centers (CSC) across the country from where the WiMAX facility would be operable from. The project is estimated to cost 1500 crore rupees. The company had only recently awarded the contract for supplying WiMAX base stations in Kerala to the American company, Harris Stratex. The plans are ambitious not just because of the potential value it can offer in rural governance over a long term, but also because it will help India move forward in enabling more citizens make use of Internet access. The Internet penetration levels have been terribly low at close to 7.1%. This project will also be in line with WiMAX forum’s projection last year that India will be home to 27.5 million WiMAX users by 2012. The bids to be opened on August 25th are for...

MTNL Now Dials Franchise Route For Its WiMax Services
2009-08-07 13:07:00
Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd. (MTNL), a PSU Telco based in Mumbai and Delhi has sought initial bids for franchise agreement of its Wireless Broadband services utilizing Wi-Max Technology. Earlier it invited EoI (expressions of interest) for a similar franchise route of its 3G operations. WSJ reports that the aspired deal will be on a revenue-sharing basis akin to its previous 3G franchise agreement although very less details are available for sharing agreement of  miscellaneous  revenues accruing from such operations. The recent franchise route further showcases the inability of PSU Telco’s to leverage and market new age communication products to their advantage. BSNL and MTNL were given 3G and Wi-Max Licenses ahead of their private counterparts but has largely been unsuccessful in gaining first mover advantage in 3G and Wi-Max services. MTNL reportedly had only 1000 subscribers for its 3G operations till recently. Terms of agreement? The bidders should provide ...

India To Become 3rd Largest In Internet By 2013: While Wimax To Outgrow 3G
2009-07-29 05:48:00
The internet users in India has seen a lower than expected growth all these years despite major expectations arising from the frivolous rise seen in telecom subscribers count. A latest report by Forrester, forecasts that India would become the third largest country in terms of internet users across the globe. The report takes into account an average growth of 10-20 percent in online users in India. The report also forecasts the total number of internet users worldwide would touch 2.2 billion by 2013. Currently the estimates for total online population in India ranges anywhere between 50 million to 80 million users. China currently has 300million+ online user, it recently overtook US in terms of online user strength. Is it really possible ? Indian telecom growth was just recently seen breaking records even after a stupendous growth seen in recent years and a decade of wireless services availability. The growth would be largely be for the online sector in India as Telco...

Russian Telco Yota To Enter India’s Wimax Scene
2009-07-07 05:35:00
Russian telecom operator Yota, backed by Intel Capital may form an alliance with Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. Yota currently offers WiMAX services in three major regions of Russia. They wish to offer WiMAX-based broadband services in Mumbai and Delhi from their partnership with MTNL and rest of the country from their alliance with BSNL. Companies looking to expand their international markets find India one of the key markets. Yota is one of them who will have the first mover advantage by partnering MTNL and BSNL. Besides, not having to buy spectrum through a competitive bidding slated for later this year would be an additional advantage. Mr Yegor Ivanov, Director, Business Development, Yota said that 20 Mhz of spectrum would not be enough for operators to provide broadband services. At least 30 Mhz of spectrum is required for WiMAX services to function without any issues. IPTV services are provided in Russia to the Yota’s broadband subscribers. ...

Here's his bullish review."When looking at ALVR, one metric that stands out is its low forward price to sales ratio."If based on the consensus for 2009 revenues, ARRS is sporting a forward price to sales ratio of 0.65 to 1."Of course that is based on the vision of fairly good revenue growth in 2009. If we pull back and use the 2008 consensus, it is a bit less attractive at 0.84 to 1, but still awfully low when we consider other available metrics."ALVR reported a net cash balance at the end of September of $145.5M, which covers 61% of its market capitalization (represents $2.25 per share). Asus is promising four to six hours of battery life. There is a WiMax version in the works (it’s being shown at the WiMax Expo), but it’s a little further out.
