Maria Sharapova wanted to win Wimbledon 10 times to be happy. But I'd have
2008-05-14 21:19:00 If you're going to go to a sporting event, go to one that counts. One that makes headlines not just in your town or your state or your country, but the whole world. One with a sense of history and class and drama.Go to Wimbledon.Wimbledon is the only sporting event that can be referred to by a single word. And what images that word conjures up: emerald green grass. Clean-cut whites. British royalty mingling with American celebrities. The smell of summer. The thwack of the ball against the racket. The towering cheers when the amazing happens - -and the amazing always happens at Wimbledon.Yes, Wimbledon conjures up all of that. But it also conjures up more than just the hazy images of beautiful summer tennis matches.Say Wimbledon and you think, too, of Tatiana Golovin's red knickers. Of Serena Williams screaming in pain but sticking it out to make it to the quarterfinals. Of Roger Federer winning four straight titles there. Or Bjorn Borg winning five.Say Wimbledon, and you think the...

Wimbledon - The Movie
2008-01-07 17:44:00 I just thought that i would blog about something i like since i havent blog for quite a while and this blog is supposed to keep track of my life as i pass through the different stages in life. But frankly speaking, i am still not experiencing any stress or challenges except the fact that i am lacking in sleep by quite a few hours per day (I sleep 6 hours everyday, sometimes lesser). Waking up at six everyday also affects my complexion and concentration lifespan sometimes, well what to do?Well, enough of the boring stuff, i will now talk about my favourite movie. I still remembered the day when i was accepted into the tennis team and i was all jubilant and crazy. I started spending a few hundreds just on tennis stuff alone. And coincidentally, i saw this totally awesome movie that i knew i had to get - Wimbledon. This story follows the main protagonist, Peter Colt who is ranked 119th in the world currently and how through meeting this one particular girl, find love and along the way, ...

How to score tickets to Wimbledon?
2007-10-19 02:40:00 Where you love tennis or not, this is an experience in itself. If seeking Britishness is what you're after on your next trip to Blighty, this is the place. As you may know, it takes place during June and July, and if you're lucky, you may even get a sunny day or two. No, it needn't cost an arm and a leg. Another popular misconception about London. What you have to have is a willingness to line up for a while. About 5 hours, maybe 6. Your chances are higher earlier in the tournament and on a weekday. I have managed to be at Wimbledon and see great matches for 5 years, and cannot wait to get back. If you get there really early, the box office may offer you tickets to Center court and Court No 1; otherwise just the ground pass. But don't knock the ground pass just yet - apart from Center and No 1, it offers you access to all other courts, and early in the week, you're bound to see some big names at the smaller courts. The cost is between 5 and 20 pounds, depending on the day o...

Wimbledon Wrap - 2007
2007-07-09 04:44:00 Venus Williams won her fourth Wimbledon title this year, while Roger Federer won his fifth. So, no new champions in this year's event. The real surprises came in the Grand Slam breakthrough performances of two young French players who had long shown talent but had yet to take that next step up into the elite.Marion Bartoli reached her first Grand Slam final, having never before advanced beyond the fourth round at a major. Her year has been getting better and better, having done well in the claycourt season, and she made a good fist of things at the French Open, where French players hardly ever play well. But nobody would have predicted her amazing, upset-laden run to the Wimbledon final. The first sign of what was to come came in the fourth round, where she took out No. 3 Jelena Jankovic after losing the first set, the biggest win of her career at that stage. She came back again from a set down to beat No. 31 Michaella Krajicek in the quarterfinals. She then scored the biggest upse...
Federer Shows Why He is World's #1 [David Stefanini]
2007-07-09 03:38:00 This from ESPN.com:Six years ago, a 19-year-old Swiss prodigy beat Pete Sampras in the fourth round here at Wimbledon. The five-set defeat prevented Sampras from winning his fifth consecutive title at the All England Club and, in retrospect, announced a challenge to his supremacy in men's tennis. That prodigy was named Roger Federer. On Sunday, a 21-year-old Spanish prodigy pushed Federer into another contentious five-set match -- his first in a Grand Slam final. Rafael Nadal was attempting to stop Federer from joining Bjorn Borg as the only man to win five straight Wimbledon titles and, not insignificantly, equaling Borg's and Rod Laver's achievement of 11 Grand Slam singles titles.Comments:What else is there to say about Roger Federer. He is clearly the best tennis player in the world, and the most dominant athlete in any sport. Nobody has been this dominant since Michael Jordan. The difference here is Jordan had a team around him, Federer is one man. Every time Federer steps o...

Federer Wins Historic Fifth Wimbledon Title
2007-07-09 02:49:00 Roger Federer emulated Bjorn Borg by winning fivestraight Wimbledon titles but he was given a huge scare by Rafael Nadalin a classic final. The world number one prevailed 7-6 4-6 7-6 2-6 6-2 after three hours and 45 minutes of breathtaking tennis. Federer looked to be in control with a two sets to one lead, but the tireless Nadal broke twice to force a decider. After saving four break points, Federer powered a superb forehand down the line to lead 4-2 before sealing an epic win. After taking victory, Federer collapsed to his knees as Borg, watching from the Royal Box, joined the rest of an enrapturedCentre Court crowd in giving the champion and his beaten opponent a standing ovation. The Winning moment:It was no more than they deserved, Federer winning by far the toughest match of his five-year reign. "Each one is special but to play a champion like Rafa, it means a lot and equalling Bjorn's record as well..." a tearful Federer told BBC Sport. "He's a fantastic player and he's going...

Classic Wimbledon ending.
2007-07-08 19:06:00 Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal were once again head-to-head today. This time the prize was the Wimbledon championships. In a classic matchup, Roger Federer defeated Rafael Nadal in a five set battle of 7- 6 (9- 7), 4 -6, 7- 6 (7- 3), 2- 6 and 6-2.Roger Federer wins his 5th Wimbledon title in a row, tying the great Bjorn Borg who also won Wimbledon five times in a row in the 1970s. 2007-07-08 02:26:00 OK, I'm away quite long enough from the blogosphere and I guess this time I'm back for real again. There's a lot of blogs reading and comments posting to be done today. So, I'm going to keep this post short. There's nothing more important to blog about than a post on the Wimbledon, right? Yes, another battle between Nadal and Federer tonight. Fedex might be playing on his best surface and the favourite to win but I'm putting my bet on Nadal. Hope Nadal will break Fedex dominance!

Wimbledon Update
2007-07-07 14:42:00 A quiet week on Punt.com - I've been busy! Making money for a change, these last 3 weeks have seen me make back all (and more) that I had lost in the previous 6/7 weeks which is a real confidence builder for the rest of the year. The big thing for me have been my findings as posted in the over staking entry (2 below this). Trading to a size where I'm ok to lose, no anxiety and buzz. There's also been a couple of max bet situations that have arisen, namely Serena's match v Hantuchova where she cramped and then it rained. I took a view that she would be fine after the rain and pretty much ran this hrough. Over 7000 commission points were gained from this win alone. The rain has affected things massively this year. From a trading point of view, the flow of matches has been interupted, it's meant virtually restarting the match each time. Running positions has been a bit risky. It's a real shame as well that many top quality matches... |
