Wind Power Enters Argentinean Energy Grid
2008-10-08 16:55:00
From TreeHugger: So far mainly fed by fossil fuels, hydroelectric, and nuclear power, the Argentinean energy grid is now incorporating clean energy from the Antonio Moran wind park, located in the southern province of Chubut. The park was born in 1994 with only two windmills to fee
NJ: We'll Become a World Leader in Wind Power

I understand that if you add a forth blade to a three bladed wind generator propeller, you gain only about 5 percent more power. If you added a complete second three bladed propeller to the same shaft, only 20 t0 40 feet away, would you gain50+ percent more power? Is this easy to test or simulate?
U.S. Wind Power Strangled by Antiquated Power Grid
2008-08-27 15:20:00

Here's the latest "deep-discount' buy."Led by states such as Texas and California, wind farms around the country will generate almost 50 billion kilowatt hours of electricity this year. Of course, the U.S. is still playing catch-up with many other regions. "In fact, countries such as Spain, Portugal and Denmark all rely on wind farms for as much as one-quarter of their total power needs. "Across Europe, wind turbines will account for roughly ...

Low Gas Prices--Are They Worth Remembering?
2008-05-20 08:22:00
WEUA asks a silly question: do you remember when gas was 99 cents? I do. I'm not that old, and I remember when it was 87 cents a gallon. But lets be honest with ourselves--gas prices will NEVER be low again. There are a first reasons for this. First, oil prices are continuing to hit unprecedented highes along with gas prices. Therefore, oil companies are passing along the price increase to consumers. However, the second reason is more important--America has been paying lower gas prices than the rest of the world FOREVER--when I let Thailand gas prices had risen to $5.17 a gallon. This means that even if this recent rise in oil prices is a bubble, don't expect gas prices to fall when oil prices do. U.S. oil companies (despite the billions of dollars in profits they reap) have been waiting a long time to bring U.S. gas prices inline with the rest of the world. Do you think they will just back away from that once they have achieved this goal? So, besides reminiscing and complaining, wh...

Wind power can provide for 20% of all U.S. electricity
2008-05-14 05:25:00
Wind power could provide for 20% of all electricity needs in 20 years from now, an Energy Department report states. The Associated Press points out that this is just as much energy as nuclear power provides us today. If wind power provides for 20% of energy needs by 2030, that would be because of advancements and ...

Saline Sustainability Meeting on Wind Power
2008-05-13 23:05:00
On May 20, at 7:00 pm at the Pittsfield Township Administration Building, Saline Sustainability Circle will feature a presentation on wind turbines by John Sarver of the Michigan Energy Office. Mr. Sarver is part of the Michigan Wind Working Group, and will speak on the different types of turbines currently in use in Michigan, the feasibility of wind generation in our area, and ideas for ordinances and guideline for heights and locations for wind turbines in communities in Michigan. The U.S. Department of Energy's Wind Powering America program has a goal that 20% of all electricity will come from wind power by 2030. Michigan has the wind resources and technical and manufacturing capabilities to make a major contribution to this goal. Will ultra low frequency noise be a problem? What is “shadow flicker” and can it be abated? Are birds and bats affected? If large propellers aren’t feasible in a more urban or suburban setting, how about barber pole or roof mounted ...

Blimpy wind power
2008-05-06 22:28:00
Magenn has designed a buoyant wind turbine. clipped from www.magenn.comMARS is a lighter-than-air tethered wind turbine that rotates about a horizontal axis in response to wind, generating electrical energy. This electrical energy is transferred down the 1000-foot tether for immediate use, or to a set of batteries for later use, or to the power grid. Helium sustains MARS and allows it to ascend to a higher altitude than traditional wind turbines. MARS captures the energy available in the 600 to 1000-foot low level and nocturnal jet streams that exist almost everywhere. MARS rotation also generates the "Magnus effect" which provides additional lift, keeps the MARS stabilized, and positions it within a very controlled and restricted location to adhere to FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) & Transport Canada guidelines.  A computer voice explains further.

HyMini uses wind power to charge your gadgets
2008-04-06 17:59:00
HyMini uses wind power to charge your gadgetsPeople have been paying more attention to the impact that their technology use has on the environment. Thus we’ve had a slew of of gadgets that take advantage of the sun’s rays for power. However, there are other sources of renewable power that are untapped. If you want to be the coolest eco-friendly tech lover on the block, you might look into the HyMini.Rather than concentrating on drawing solar energy for power, the HyMini has a turbine that uses the wind to charge your gadgets. It has ports for many cameras, phones and other devices. While I think this $50 gadget is interesting, I don’t actually think it is all that practical. The main reason is that you need air traveling at 9 mph to turn the turbines fast enough for a charge. That would make it ideal for attaching to your car, however, you can’t have winds of more than 40 mph, as it just won’t hold up. Make one of these that can take 70+ mph winds and you’ve got yourself ...
Wind Power as a Viable Solution to Alternative Energy Needs
2008-04-05 06:55:00
Warren PetersAlthough it is much less expensive to initially get hooked into the local electric company's grid than it is to set up and hook into wind turbines, in the long run one saves money by utilizing the wind for one's energy needs while also becoming more independent. Not receiving an electric bill while enjoying the advantages of the modern electrically-driven lifestyle is a wondrous feeling.Electric bills and fuel bills are rising steadily but the cost of wind turbine energy is zero, and the cost of installing and hooking up a turbine is steadily coming down as demand rises and more commercial success is realized by various companies producing the turbines and researching technologies to make them ever more efficient. In addition, people are moving away from the traditional electric grids and the fossil fuels for personal reasons including desire for greater independence, the desire to live remotely or rurally without having to go primitive, political concerns such as fea...

EUROASIA: Turkey embraces wind power
2008-02-10 17:33:00
In an era of record high oil prices, many countries increasingly are turning to alternative fuels, including biofuel, solar energy and wind power. This pattern is typically pronounced in Turkey, forced to import more than 90 percent of its energy needs, with energy suppliers that are not only expensive, but erratic. In 2006, Turkey spent $29 billion on energy imports, primarily from Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, Syria and Russia. High prices and fickle suppliers have stimulated Turkey's growing interest in wind power.Turkish interest in alternative fuels has been spurred by recent events. Turkish natural gas imports come primarily from Russia via the South Stream pipeline and Iran. On Dec. 31, Turkmenistan halted its deliveries of natural gas deliveries to Iran, citing the need for urgent pipeline repairs. The cutoff subsequently forced Iran to reduce its gas exports to Turkey by 75 percent, from 20 million cubic meters to 5 million cu. m., as inclement weather increased domestic demand...
