Wind Power from a Motorized Vehicle
2009-06-19 17:17:00
This idea came to me the other night while trying to sleep. What if you mounted a small generator and a propeller on the outside of a moving vehicle so that the forward motion would turn the propeller thereby generating power that could be used to charge batteries? Would the increased air fricti

Where'd the Wind Go?
2009-06-16 06:09:00
Here's an interesting tidbit, kind of related to Ronseto's post from last week (http://cr4.globalspec.com/thre-ad/38862) New research shows that average and peak wind speeds in the Midwestern and eastern U.S. have declined over the last 35 years. The "trend shows a 10 percent drop or more over a
How Much Power from Wind?
2009-06-13 14:19:00
Leland Teschler of Machine Design magazine says it would take at least 13,000 large wind turbines — and probably more like 50,000 — all spinning at top speed all the time, to satisfy the electrical needs of New York City. His point is that there is not nearly enough wind power and this a

Wind loads and ASCE 7-05, Figure 6-9

Curious how others apply design wind pressures for load cases 1 & 3. The figure makes no mention of roof loads for flat roof structures but it does not seem appropriate to ignore roof loads for MWFRS in high wind regions. Thanks
Do Wind Turbines Slow the Earth's Rotation?
2009-06-08 18:34:00
Many years ago, an electrical engineer asked me "If the proliferation of wind turbines would slow down the earths rotation due to drag?" At the time, I dismissed the idea as just a foolish question, but after all this time, the question still sticks in my mind. Has anyone ever entertained such a
Electric car batteries as storage for solar and wind energy production
2009-06-07 18:05:00
With the introduction of more electric cars, one will need more electricity. The technologies to produce it are coal and gas, hydro, nuclear, solar, and wind. The last two are the most acceptable but are the least predictable. You cannot order more wind or sun at peak demand hours. There is som

Green gains in wind and wires
2009-05-19 14:00:00
Brendan Coffey is a leading authority on "green" investing; in his The Cabot Green Investor, the advisor looks to alternative energy firm American Superconductor (NASDAQ: AMSC).Here's his review of the company, which is a player both in wind power and energy efficient wiring that can play a role in improved power grid systems."Long an R&D company, focusing on highly conductive wiring, American Superconductor made a game-changing purchase of an Austrian wind company, Windtec, in early 2007."Since the purchase, American Superconductor has become a primary supplier of turbine designs to Sinovel, one of China’s three major turbine manufacturers. Sales to Sinovel alone have topped $600 million from 16 GW worth of 1.5 MW turbines."In China’s turbine business, bigger is better, so now, AMSC is starting to ship 3 MW turbines to Sinovel as well. "A unique wrinkle to American Superconductor’s business model is it not only sells...

Wind Energy in Tunnels

I would like to see what is the feasibility of putting smaller wind mills in a tunnell. This tunnel is approximately 1500 ft in length 20 ft in height and approximately 40 ft in width. I am guessing the wind speed is 20 to 25 miles per hour 24 hours a day 365 days a year it is a natural updraft or c
MSI Wind U120
2009-04-29 19:30:00
After two months of research, I have settled on my new laptop...except it's not a laptop, it's a netbook. The MSI Wind U120. I had two basic requirements when I began my search: it had to be be built sturdy, and it had to have at least a 10" viewing screen. The only two netbooks that met this were the MSI Wind and the HP Mini's.Acer turned out to be nothing but a piece of plastic junk. After further research, I found for about $200 less...and a total out of pocket expense of $330, I could snag the MSI Wind with a similar hardware configurations as the HP Mini. The MSI Wind U120 is a steal, and is receiving great tech reviews from people who are experts in these things. So I plan to order one middle of next month, and retire this antique I have been using to craigslist. Anyone out there looking for a cheap mobile netbook with top notch specs, this is the one for you. Here is what mine is coming with:Intel 1.6Ghz Atom N270 Processor Display 10" backlit LCD maximum resolution 1024 x ...

Wind Powered GreenBird Breaks One Record...Aims for Another Within the Year
2009-04-01 00:30:00
Wind powered transportation is nothing new to this planet. While it has remained on the lakes and oceans for the most part, there are a few people out there who have brought it onto dry land. One such person, Richard Jenkins, has taken wind power to a new level by breaking the land speed record for a wind powered vehicle.

Wind Turbine Blades
2009-03-27 21:51:00
I am about to prototype a new design of turbine blades. My idea is to have 2 or 3 aerofoil shape blades with a constant chord dim from root to tip. The root of the blade would be fixed to the hub in a way that allows it to change pitch. The fixing pin on the blade would be offset from the centr
