Yougle brings YouTube to Windows Media Center
2008-05-25 13:33:00
One of the most requested feature by Media Center users has been the ability to play videos from the most popular video sharing site i.e. YouTube. Microsoft in the 4th quarter of 2007 did release a beta of "internet tv" but it was only limited to US audience and it only supported video playback by MSN Video (which was well kind of expected). Comes Yougle - a third-party plugin for Windows Media Center which brings popular web services from YouTube, MSN Video/Soapbox, Flickr and many more right on our Windows Media Center so that we all can enjoy our favorite videos from these popular services right from the comfort of the couch in our lounge!   Yougle is currently only supported on 32 bit versions of Windows Vista Home Premium & Windows Vista Ultimate. Download Yougle 0.4.0d Taimur Asad (The Microsoft "Wow" Blog!)

Windows Media Center firewall ports
2008-04-05 17:30:00
Are you trying to stream music, pictues or videos from your Windows Media Center computer on your Xbox 360?Is it not working?Do you get "PC selected failed" when you test the connection?Basically you are not able to play music because you have a firewall programme installed on your PC blocking the connection between the Xbox 360 and the computer. And this firewall is something other than Windows firewall. For the Xbox 360 and the computer to communicate there should be some ports opened on your Firewall programme on the PC. (Windows firewall already opens the correct ports for the communication between the Computer and the Xbox 360)To open these firewall ports, you must know the name of the program, the port that the program needs, and the direction of the communication signal.Below are the ports that you should open for Windows Media Center Based PC: For the manual setting of your firewall, you'll need to check the firewall documentation. For Windows Media Connect PC firewall settin...

Windows Vista SP1 Prerequisites & Non-Security Update coming via Windows Up
2008-02-12 18:53:00
Today we have a non-security update scheduled for distribution via Windows Update that you may find of some interest. The non-security update KB947172, a Cumulative Update for Media Center for Windows Vista, addresses an issue introduced by KB941229 where, when watching live digital TV on an Xbox 360, changing channels may freeze the UI. This update is included in Windows Vista SP1. Speaking of Windows Vista SP1, the final two of three prerequisite updates needed to install Windows Vista SP1 will also be hitting Windows Update.  KB937287 which is the servicing stack update and KB938371 which is a multi-component update are both required before installing Windows Vista SP1. KB938371 will not be offered to Windows Vista Enterprise and Windows Vista Ultimate systems until KB935509, the first prerequisite in the series of three, has been installed. Both of the Windows Vista SP1 prerequisites are marked "Important" and will install automatically if you have Window Updates set to th...

CES 2008 Round-up & Wrap-up
2008-01-15 01:14:00
Now that CES 2008 has officially ended, I wanted to take a moment to do a round-up and wrap up post on CES coverage both here and from others. Featured Community members did some coverage on their sites of CES this year. Josh Phillips from Windows Connected has Day 1 and Day 2 write-ups of his experience online. The folks from Neowin shot some excellent videos of Microsoft Surface. And Jason Dunn has a post up on his experience riding the Media Center Express CES Bus from San Francisco to Las Vegas as well as CES in general. It was also great meeting up with John Obeto, Michael Reyes from HardwareGeeks, Ash Nallwalla and Brad Wardell from Stardock. And special thanks to Robert McLaws from Windows-Now for spending a great deal of time on the Media Center Express CES Bus setting up a fantastic Windows Media Center experience. Speaking of the Media Center Express CES Bus, blogger Robert Scoble shot a piece for Donny Duetsch's show on CNBC on the bus with a group of other bloggers....

Listening to Music in Style with New Zune Device & Software
2007-11-15 01:37:00
Yesterday was an exciting day for the Zune Team. Their new Zune devices - the Zune 4, Zune 8, and Zune 80 - hit store shelves and they launched a brand new version of Zune.net now with your very own Social Profile (your Zune Card). The Zune Team also launched a new version of the Zune software - completely re-done and much improved. There is quite a bit of reviews on both the new devices and Zune software all over the web today. I'd like to call out the reviews by Featured Community member Jason Dunn over at Zune Thoughts. He's got some fantastic videos up on the new devices and software worth checking out. I'd like to share a few things myself on the Zune software, the Zune 8, and the Zune Social web service. First off, yesterday I created a video demo of the Zune software designed to give you a quick overview of what the Zune software offers. I shot the video yesterday hoping to get it up yesterday so when I say "today" I really mean yesterday. Take a look at the video: Video...

Microsoft is getting official with its Windows Media Center Internet TV feature, which is set to go live in beta fashion tomorrow morning. According to Microsoft, users of Vista Home Premium and Vista Ultimate will soon be able to download a simple update that will enable them to "enjoy a range of television and video content on their PCs and TV sets [with a Media Center Extender of some sort] without a TV tuner in their PC." The streaming content will all be ad-supported "by an advertising platform provided by YuMe," which means that you'll be getting it gratis. The programming reportedly "comes from MSN Video," and just over 100 hours of it will be available when the beta begins. To whet your appetite, a few notables that will be available are "full episodes of TV shows such as 'Arrested Development,' full-length music concerts by artists such as Chris Cornell, Snoop Dogg, Elton John, Pink, John Mayer and the Pussycat Dolls, movie trailers, news segments from MSNBC, and sports ...

While details were kept slim, we do know that content will fall into Sports, Entertainment, News, Top Picks, Music and Movies categories. Additionally, the videos will reportedly be "better than SD quality, but not HD," although HD programs could certainly emerge in the future. 10 Things ? Windows Media Center Movie Browser
2007-09-04 20:24:00
Although many of us have used Windows Media Center Edition, there are a couple of things that may not be that well known -- one of my favorites being the Movie Browser in Windows Vista.  Let's see how it works... Have you ever been in the mood to watch a movie but you don't have a particular one in mind -- and you really don't want to have to go through all the information in the guides to find one that appeals to you?  Movie Browser allows you to see a list of movies that are either playing currently or those that will be starting in the near future.  While using Movie Browser, you can specify the type of movie you're looking for and search using any of several criteria.  Assuming that you have the correct hardware installed to run Media Center, using the Movie Browser is simple.  Open Media Center, select "TV & Movies" and navigate to "Search."  You can search by any of the following: Title Keyword Categories Movie Actor Movie Director If yo...

Happy Birthday Windows Media Center
2007-08-25 09:27:00
Windows Media Center Program Manager Charlie Owen highlights that this year Windows Media Center celebrates its 5th anniversary on September 3rd. With Windows Media Center's upcoming birthday, Ed Bott decided to take the opportunity to celebrate the event by writing about how Windows Media Center has taken over his living room.  Ed takes three pages to describe setting up Windows Media Center in his living room and his experiences using it. Ed's goal was to turn Windows Media Center into a centralized hub for all his digital photos, music and video - consolidating his data into a single digital entertainment point within his house. Those interested in Ed's specs and pricing for his Windows Media Center set up - he's posted them here. I'm going to follow in celebrating Windows Media Center's 5 year anniversary just like Ed by posting about my very own Windows Media Center set-up I have in my living room. Watching Live Earth in HD on Windows Media Center
2007-07-08 01:57:00
Today, across the world, Live Earth is taking place - a huge concert for "a climate in crisis". This event is bringing together 2 billion people across the world with performances by over 150 musicians and presented by MSN. Unfortunately I was unable to make it to any of the live concerts myself but I have the next best thing to being there in person. Connected to a 42-inch LG HDTV (which is Energy Star compliant) is a Digital Cable Card Home Entertainment PC from Velocity Micro. Companies such as Velocity Micro, HP, and others are beginning to ship PC's capable of HDTV with Windows Vista using Windows Media Center. These PC's come with a special HD tuner with a slot for a special card called a CableCard. These CableCards enable HD capabilities through your digital cable service and are available through your digital cable providers (for example I received my CableCard from Comcast). June 2007 Cumulative Update for Windows Media Center in Windows Vista
2007-06-29 01:46:00
Tuesday saw the release of the June 2007 Cumulative Update for Media Center for Windows Vista on Windows Update.  Steven Bink highlights the update and Ian Dixon also talks about the update as well on his blog.   The June 2007 Cumulative Update resolves several issues in Windows Media Center including a update to the Digital Cable Card component in Media Center that improves the interaction between the CableCARD, digital cable tuner, and Media Center. With this update programs for enabling the use of Windows Media Extenders (such as the Xbox 360) have been updated. You may need to update your third party firewall to take into account the changes to these programs and enable access through the firewall to your Windows Media Extender. For example, I use Windows Live OneCare to protect my PC I use for Media Center. In Windows Live OneCare's Firewall Advanced Settings, you will notice it lists programs by name and version. Other third party firewalls may do the ...
