California Wine Club shares family-owned wineries with Chicago and beyond
2010-03-27 20:28:00 Living in Chicago doesn't mean we should have to forgo enjoying the fruit of California, once in awhile. Many of us know that the most popular fruits of California are grapes, more specifically, grapes that have been turned into wine. The California Wine Club is the child of wine enthusiasts Bruce and Pam Boring, who wanted a wine of the month club that was just like "one friend recommending a great bottle of wine to another friend." Each month, travel California's wine country searching out small, family- owned wineries, tasting the wines that never make it to local stores or wine shops. If you love wine but are overwhelmed by the selection at your local liquor store or wine shop, a...

Wannabe Winos on the Road!
2008-03-12 20:06:00 Well, we are headed off to our annual trip to California. I had hoped we were going to be able to visit another part of CA wine country this time, but we've decided on one more trip to the Dry Creek/Russian River/Alexander/Anderson Valley area, due to time constraints and a few other factors. Plus, we do really love the area, and it brings back nice memories of our honeymoon. We will be in the area this Saturday evening through Wednesday morning, so really 3 full days. I'm trying not to plan too much this time, and I'm avoiding making appointments on this trip. Any you would absolutely say are MUST SEEs that don't require appointments? And if you have any restaurant recommendations in the area, I'd love to hear them! I'm fairly set on stopping in again at Roederer, so we will be up in the Anderson Valley, and I would like to try to run by Bella and David Coffaro again to taste their newer line ups and restock my cellar with some of their offerings. With that said, here's a...

Wineries to Duke It Out Over FOOTE Mark
2008-02-13 05:50:00 On Feb. 8, the owners of Washington’s E.B. Foote Winery filed suit in the Western District against the owners of southern California’s Foote Printe Winery. FOOTE WINERY and Design, which plaintiffs and their predecessors claim to have used since 1978.Defendants have not yet answered plaintiffs’ complaint. The fact that their surname is Foote would seem to help their cause. The case cite is Miller v. Foote, No. 08-00215 (W.D. Wash.).

Stonehedge 2003 Krupp Brother?s Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon: The Finest Valu
2007-09-27 07:04:00 I began wine collecting with the 1986 vintage, a fine year for cabernet, when the prices for a bottle of California cabernet were in line with most consumer’s budgets. Since that time I have made it a point to buy ultra premium cabernets and very inexpensive “value” cabernets. I have yet to find a Cabernet, ...

Ed Sbragia Winery: Prominent Winemaker Uses Glass Stopper to Slay the Cork
2007-08-23 17:57:00 The dirtiest little secret, within the wine industry, long a terrible fact is the”corkage factor.” It has been estimated that up to 20% of the wines in circulation are contaminated rendering them undrinkable. The reason for this high rate of loss is the material used to seal a wine bottle: cork. Cork has long ...

New York Wineries Face Tastings Gone Wild
2007-07-10 14:47:00 This one came from Mookie: There are reports of wine tastings gone wild involving intoxicated visitors who have tossed back full glasses of wine without regard to nose or body until they grabbed the brass spittoon for baser purposes. ?All of a sudden it?s five deep at the bar with people knocking into each other and pushing each other out of the way to get to the tasting,? said Kristen Venasky, 27, who has been pouring for two years at Palmer. ?Saturdays,? she said, ?are for people who want to get sloshed.? Yes, this post is perfect for a rerun of Sherry Girl, don't you think?

In Napa, Wilderness Above the Wineries
2007-06-10 08:02:00 In Napa, Wilderness Above the WineriesBy KERMIT PATTISONhttp://travel.nytimes.c-om/2007/06/08/travel/escapes/08-Napa.html?em&ex=1181620800&-en=326611186d3c2b9e&ei=5087-%0AAFTER hours of tromping through the hills of Napa County, beneath towering redwoods, over mountain creeks, past ruins of 19th-century homesteads, there still wasn't a single grape to be seen. Finally, from the top of a mountain peak, there was the wine country at last. Grids of green vineyards stretched for miles. Far below, perched on a hilltop, stood a white stucco winery that seemed small as a matchbox. From the highway, Napa seems to be wall-to-wall vineyards. But from the trails that snake through the hills of the county, you can see just how little of it is actually covered in vines ? only about 9 percent.I had detoured into the hills to appreciate the Napa terroir in a new way ? by hiking it. Napa offers a rare pairing of wine and wilderness. The climate and topography that make the region so ripe for vit...

Wine Tour Italy ? Open Cellars Memorial Day Weekend
2007-05-24 22:36:00 I have found there are two times during the year when a tour on the Italian wine trail becomes more interesting. The harvest in October is a unique occasion to participate in the wine making process, from gathering the grapes to fermenting the wine. The second is during the spring when one can have the first tastes of last year?s production. Italy is all about tourism and the Wine Tourism Movement sponsors a nationwide tasting of the newly bottled wines. It is an opportunity to meet the producers, stay in some fantastic Agriturismo and get to know, first hand, about what is going to be available during the upcoming year.Italy is expecting well over a million wine lovers and tourists to flock to some 1,000 vineyards taking part in this year's Open Cellars event. Now in its 15th year, Open Cellars has been a pioneer in developing Italy's wine tourism sector attracting over four million people to the Italian countryside. Aside from seeing where and how wine is made, and discovering t...
Poggio Antico ? Not just a winery ? Visit Montalcino
2007-05-06 23:24:00 Vacationing in Montalcino. The great wines of Tuscany are not the only reason to visit this area. Many wineries not only make wine, but also produce Olive Oil and may have a small restaurant. I have found that while the wine may be really good the true attraction is one of the ancillary services they offer. Poggio Antico is one of these wineries. Located in Montalcino the restaurant is one of the best places to eat in the area. Considering this is in the heart of Tuscany that is saying something. The Poggio Antico restaurant is owned by the winery but is run by the husband and wife team, Roberto e Patrizia Minnetti. The menu? is constantly changing as the finest and freshest ingredients are employed to prepare traditional regional plates. The menu? is also carefully choreographed to the elegant wines of the winery. Desserts are prepared in house and local cheeses are part of the attraction. The ambiance of the restaurant is that of a traditional Tuscan villa, elegant yet sober. This r...
A Laundry List of Wineries
2007-03-19 18:27:00 One of our wine clubs, Nelson Family Vineyards, is having a nifty event on April 14. You sign up to come to a lunch and a wine blending, where you work in teams to create the winning blend, which will then be bottled and you win a magnum if your blend is chosen. To me, this sounds awesome and like it would be lots of fun (I get to play winemaker!).We had already been planning a trip to CA to visit Matt's parents and I thought it wouldn't be such a stretch to take a short flight up towards wine country at the end of the week.....it took a few days of convincing, but Matt's on board and we are headed back to the Sonoma area in mid-April!!Well be in the area for 3 full days. I figure we will be able to go to 6 vineyards in that time, given that the wine club event will take up most of the afternoon of the Saturday. I've already scheduled a visit to Michel-Schlumberger thanks to a tip I found on Fork and Bottle. We are also definitely going to go to Ridge Vineyards (I think you can ...

Foss Marai Prosecco DOC Extra ? Dry
2007-03-01 19:21:00 Our current evaluation of Prosecco ends with Foss Marai Prosecco Extra ? Dry. Foss Marai Prosecco is a good Prosecco, produced using traditional methods. Foss Marai is part of the Consorzio dei Produttori Prosecco del Valdobbiadene but their claim to quality has been earned over generations. The Biasotto family has dedicated their efforts to the production of Prosecco for over a century. Foss Marai produces some very interesting wines and the Prosecco Extra ? Dry is just one of many quality products. The vineyard is located deep in the valleys of Guia. The local dialect calls the valleys, fossi. Marai is another name for Guia, thus the winery took the name of the place of production, Foss Marai.Foss Marai Prosecco Extra ? Dry develops the common floral flavors of Prosecco. While it is an extra ? dry we found it slightly tending toward sweet without the slightly bitter tones we like so much in the sparkling Prosecco. The bubbles are small and probably on the light side of other spark... |
