2008-12-21 05:27:00 As the NHL continues to build for its second crack at the Winter Classic, planners are keeping their fingers crossed that wind and rain are nowhere to be found. Fear not: Dan Craig, king of NHL ice, is ready to turn the Friendly Confines into a winter wonderland. Hoopla continues to build at Wrigley Field, where preparations are under way for January 1's second edition of the NHL Winter Classic

NFL Gurus Loved the Winter Classic
2008-01-07 15:00:00 (c) OnFrozenBlog - http://www.onfrozenblog.com/ - Thought I’d share a couple blurbs with you as praise for the NHL’s Winter Classic continues to ripple through the sports pages. Monday Morning QB Peter King of SI.com had good things to say about it, after explaining that he couldn’t care less about this year’s less-than-compelling bowl games: I ...

NHL Winter Classic proves league can get it right
2008-01-02 23:01:00 OK, so 70,000 people can't be wrong.I, on the other hand, can be.Apparently the NHL can go head-to-head with college football bowl games and more than hold their own. With yesterday's Winter Classic nothing short of an overwhelming success, the NHL got it right. And yes, I stand corrected.Outside of the wrath of Mother Nature, which the denizens of Buffalo are more than familiar with, and a few extended delays to patch up the ice, the NHL couldn't have done it any better. There seemed to be a few in the crowd of 71,000-plus not nursing one of those dreaded way-too-many-from-the-night-bef-ore hangovers. Once you took a closer look, you realized they still had a beer in their hands, the party not quite over. You saw a handful of attention-starved oafs in the crowd taking their shirts off in one of those "Hey, Mom, look at me!" moments. Mom must have been so proud. Some needed a work out, the rest needed to lay off the doughnuts. But who cares? It was the NHL's New Year's bas...

Winter Classic was well worth watching
2008-01-02 11:37:00 Okay, while some of us were recovering from hangovers, watching the Rose Bowl parade (and those exceptionally HOT USC Song Girls!) Florida fall flatter than a tortilla chip in the Texas sun, out shopping, watching internet porn or the "Law & Order" marathon on TNT, I got to watch something that

The Winter Classic
2008-01-02 00:00:00 Photo New York Times Although the outcome was disappointing, (and I'll leave the commenting about the game itself to people better suited to it), it was one of those rare occasions when Buffalo, her people, and her weather, were on national display. Flipping between the coverage on NBC and CBC, ...

Winter classic: Crosby wins it under the snow.
2008-01-01 23:19:00 The Ralph Wilson stadium in Buffalo was the theatre of the NHL Winter classic today as the Pittsburgh Penguins faced the Buffalo Sabres on a natural ice rink. The event was presented under difficult weather conditions as it snowed heavily for the most part of the event. For this game, Pittsburgh was wearing a light blue jersey dating from their very first NHL season.Today because of the quantity of snow on the ice, the game did not produce electrifying play. Many players had puck control problems, many passes were errand and the puck sometimes had a bouncing tendency. Sidney Crosby did manage to show some nice moves to the fans early on. As soon as the puck was dropped, Crosby took the puck towards Buffalo's net and allowed Colby Armstrong to open the score only a few seconds into the game.Buffalo did manage to tie up the score early into the second period thru Brian Campbell but the game then lost a bit of tempo and scoring chances were not frequent. The course of the game was stop...

Happy New Year - Watch the Winter Classic
2008-01-01 19:14:00 New Year?s Day used to be one of the best days of the year as a sports fan. This is not the case anymore. Yes, there are still six college football bowl games on television, but the games are not as important as they once were. Only five of the top twelve college football teams actually play today. The Fiesta Bowl featuring Oklahoma against West Virginia; the Orange Bowl with Virginia Tech facing Kansas; and the LSU-Ohio State National Championship game take place on January 2nd, 3rd and 7th respectively. There are still meaningful games today for regular sports fans. You can see Darren McFadden play one last time for Arkansas, watch Tim Tebow and Florida meet Michigan in Lloyd Carr?s final game as the head coach and determine whether or not Hawaii is up for the Sugar Bowl challenge. However, none of these games have any relevance in terms of crowning a national champion. If you?re at home today and a casual sports fan, I recommend taking a break from watching some of the foot...
