Winter Meetings Accomplish Little
2008-12-11 23:38:00
The Giants went into Las Vegas with a few different agenda's on mind (hopefully none of which included strippers, roulette tables and an array of intoxicants). One of which was to try and figure out a way to get power and a little bit of defense onto one of the infield corners. They also had CC Sabathia on their radar as well as Randy Johnson, who could serve as an insurance policy if Noah Lowry is unavailable come March and April. However the most newsworthy item that came from them this week is that Aaron Rowand will be moving down in the lineup. CC ended up in New York, which is for the better anyway. Him, Timmy and Matty would have been brutal for opposing hitters, but it's just too hard to tie up that much money into only two pitchers, especially with Lincecum getting ready cash in big in 2 years. And apparently the asking price for any young hitter who could help was too much. So, amongst all that talk, Brian Sabean, Dick Tidrow, Felipe Alou, Bruce Bochy and Co. have to feel...
Winter Meetings Agenda
2008-12-09 00:45:00
Major League Baseball's annual Winter Meetings got underway Monday morning in the Las Vegas, but as of midday, no real big news has surfaced regarding the Giants, or any other team for that matter. The Giants seem to be in on a number of players, free agents and possible trade targets alike but I would say that the chances of the Giants making any sort of newsworthy moves over the next few days aren't as likely as their flurry of recent action has lead some to believe. Still though, Sabean is there, hopefully taking part in meetings/discussions all day rather hanging out at the the Hard Rock, sipping cocktails and gambling away. The Giants have a glaring hole in the middle of their lineup and at the corner of their infield and that needs to be number one on the list this week for the Giants management. They've also had an eye on the CC Sabathia sweepstakes while conducting other business. If anything, the front office should have a clear picture as to where the market stands in b...

The Winter Meetings and Fantasy Baseball
2007-12-09 07:29:00
Here’s why the MLB winter meetings are an amazing event unique to the sports world: It’s the only time that any of the professional sports mimic a fantasy league. During the winter meetings 30 GMs continuously meet to talk about players and convince each other to accept one-sided trades. This year numerous GMs even filled the roles of token keeper league fantasy team owners. The first place guy who overvalues his role players and won’t trade them to win another championship—Theo Epstein Has Theo lost his mind? He really isn’t willing to give up both Jon Lester and Jacoby Ellsbury to get Johan Santana? He doesn’t think the best pitcher in baseball is worth a soft tossing lefty and speedy lead-off hitter—two types of players the minor leagues are overflowing with? I know he’s excited that Lester had a good September and Ellsbury played four good games in the playoffs, but those guys are as replaceable as middle relievers. Even th...

Sorry for the lack of posts today - I have been out and about today and I was up in Baltimore County earlier on WNST with James Baker of Oriole Magic on the Sports with Mark Suchy where we chatted about the Orioles and the Hot Stove. It was a good time, and even though we were on for more than an hour and time sure went by real fast.Anyhow, it is a few days after the Jay Gibbons steroid announcement and Oriole Nation more or less wants him gone from the organization. However, it will be easier said than done considering his contract and the time, plus money left on it. I think will he will remain with the team, but he will be role player unless he can hit his way into the every day lineup. As most fans know, Gibbons will be suspended for 15 games. The Baltimore Examiner has more on the situation.Despite Gibbons' carefully crafted apology, the Baltimore Sun's Rick Maese has poked a few holes into it and basically rendered it useless in article on Friday. He shows that Gibbons' lied ...

Winter Meetings Quietly Conclude For Texas
2007-12-07 07:30:00
With Major League Baseball’s 2007 winter meetings in Nashville, Tennessee now officially in the books, Jon Daniels and the Texas Rangers have just one somewhat lackluster trade to show for all their effort over the past four days at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center. Lackluster, yet intriguing. Wednesday afternoon’s deal that shipped outfielder Freddy Guzman ...
Still eyeing Santana, Mets leave winter meetings empty-handed (AP)

The New York Mets left the winter meetings empty-handed. Their biggest consolation: Nobody else pulled off a trade for Johan Santana, either. The Baltimore Orioles At The Winter Meetings: More Bedard and Tejada...
2007-12-05 16:34:00
Not much has happened on the Oriole front besides lots of talk. However, that should change perhaps in the next few days as Miguel Cabrera is now off the market. Tejada might finally get some mention as a suitable player to be dealt to a team in need.Bedard is garnering a lot of attention; however, a deal has not been made as according to the Baltimore Sun.After several hours of trade talks on Day 2 at the winter meetings, Orioles president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail said late yesterday afternoon that he was no closer to trading No. 1 pitcher Erik Bedard, as potential suitors continue to fall short of the club's asking price."We really are not significantly different than where we were [Monday] at this time," MacPhail said. "Our philosophy is pretty simple. We think we have a pretty good understanding of what is equitable for certain guys, and when we get there, great. Until we get there, we'll stay where we are. It's really a simple equation. The Orioles will not deal hi...

Winter Meetings: Day Deux
2007-12-05 06:11:00
Miguel Gets Cabrera Traded, Decides Not to Be a Fatty The Tigers pulled off the blockbuster move of the day, acquiring Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis for Andrew Miller, Cameron Maybin, and a slew of minor leaguers. I like the move for the Tigers because people still don’t realize how good Cabrera is. He’s had four seasons in which he’s averaged about 31 home runs, 115 RBIs, and a .320 batting avg.—-and he’s only 24 (and losing weight!!!). Scouts love Maybin and Miller, but that’s exactly the problem. They’re both toolsy guys and the drool coming from the mouths of scouts has prevented them for seeing that both are far from sure things. Entering 2008 Maybin has only played 30 games above class A, Miller has played 28, and both players struggled in the majors last year. Still, the key to the deal will be Willis. Over the last three years his BB/9 IP have gone from 2.1 to 3.4 to 3.8. A move to the American League will only make things more...

Once again, the Royals are players at the Winter Meetings
2007-12-04 19:59:00
We're only in Day 2 of baseball's Winter Meetings, but the Royals have already announced their presence -- without needing the trumpet-playing parrot for that extra flourish, either. ESPN is reporting that the Royals are finalizing a deal with Jose Guillen worth $36 million over three years, which would make him the second Seattle free agent to come over in the last two years. Guillen's signing, I'm sure, will be met with less aspersion than that other one, even though Guillen comes with a bit of baggage himself: inconsistency on the field and, more damningly, possible off-field trouble involving steroids. Although he denies having taken any illegal substances, he's on George Mitchell's watch list, and that's most definitely a bad sign.We can discuss this another time though. The Royals still have work to do at these meetings. Following up on last year's success -- Gil Meche, Brian Bannister and Joakim Soria, anyone? -- won't be easy, but at least the rest of baseball know ...

This diary is going to serve as a catch-all for all the rumors floating around out there today; Cubs-related and othwerwise. Feel free to post anything and everything, substantiated or not, over here. I'm going to start off with a doozy. Joel Sherman, via MLTR, says that the Cubs could be interested in Johnny Damon?!?!?!?!?!? I wanted him two years ago when he went to the Yanks. Now, not so much. This would, however, be vintage Hendry: Get an aging superstar on a major decline and sit back and act like the fans should be impressed. Gah. Have at it below. Update: Moving this to the front, as things could start picking up in the afternoon. Hear/see a rumor coming out of Nashville? Post it here, Cubs-related or not.

Winter Meetings edition-without an Ace
2007-12-03 22:02:00
Watching most of the reports coming out of Nashville this week, it doesn't appear that the Mets have a very good chance of landing an ace. Although I thought the Orioles seemed like a good match, it seems that the package for either Bedard or Haren would cost our entire farm. The one lessen that should be learned from this, is that it doesn't appear our minor league scouts are doing a very good job. The Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers, Angels and D-Backs all have better prospects then us, someone needs to be doing a better job scouting and recruiting/drafting.Even without trading for one of the front line guys, I still think this could be a very good team with the signing of an innings eating veteran and either an injury risk FA or diamond in the rough trade. Brian Schnieder will up grade the rotation, his ability to work with young pitcher's and call a good game will attribute to the overall ERA of the staff. Who knows he might be the final piece for a pitcher to chose the Mets. If we...

Happy Winter Meetings, Everyone!
2007-12-03 17:30:00
Can't you just see it? Right now Jimbo and Brian Cashman (or "The Cash Man," as Jimbo likes to call him) are all snuggled up by the fire in matching ski sweaters drinking hot cocoa and scheming on how to screw Boras out of his agent commission for the next 20 years. Meanwhile, Theo and Billy have fallen asleep in the hot tub, visions of sugarplums and low-cost, high-OBP players dancing in their heads. Outside, Walt Jocketty lurks in the snowy evening, stamping his feet and blowing on his fingers, knowing that, sooner or later, the guy who pushed out Eckstein for Izturis is going to be cast out of the circle of trust, opening the door, once again, into the magical world of popcorn balls, bailey's and coffee, and large, large checkbooks. Welcome to the Winter Meetings! It's only Day One, and lookey what I found already! Jim Hendry may view 26 year-old outfielder Matt Murton as expendable, if only because he's not the left-handed hitter the Cubs crave. Murton has a respectable care...
The Mets and Baseball's Winter Meetings
2007-12-03 15:16:00
It's finally here. The most wonderful time of the year. GMs are scrambling and media's waiting to hear of a deal! It's the annual baseball winter meetings. This year the Opryland hotel in Nashville, TN is host to baseball's winter swap meet. This is the place where deals get done. Nobody wants their team needs looming over them during the holidays so every GM will be looking to have a deal done by this Friday. So what are the Mets looking to get? Pitching, pitching, pitching. As we all know a top notch starting pitcher is the number one need of our beloved Mets, but it looks like Johann Santana is out of the picture as he's now saying it's either the Yankees or the Red Sox.The interesting news is the Erik Bedard of the Orioles appears to want to get out of Baltimore ASAP, and we know that Billy Beane loves to chat up the Mets. Even Miguel Cabrera is a name that is being tossed around as someone the Mets are interested in, although I'm not too crazy about that. Unless it's for ...

Winter Meetings Preview
2007-12-02 01:01:00
Baseball's annual winter meetings start on Monday, and according the the Giants beat writers, the team is expected to be active. We should have a much clearer picture of what the 2008 San Francisco Giants will look like after the meetings. The Giants' main goal is to come out of the meetings with a middle of the order type young hitter without giving up Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain and preferably Noah Lowry. Brian Sabean also said the team is trying to steer clear of the free agent market, so Andruw Jones (though I have a weird feeling he could be a Giant) and Aaron Rowand don't seem to be in the mix. I highly doubt they are going to deal Cain or Lincecum, even with all the Miguel Cabrera rumors flying around. Therefore, if they want to get a young and somewhat proven player, which would be ideal, the would have to part with at least Lowry. There are many of teams that would love to deal for a 27 year old, winning left-hander who is under contract for 3 more seasons. Not only that, bu...
