Witty Women Writers: Tonight!
2009-10-15 13:23:00 I'll be reading tonight at Witty Women Writers at The Book Cellar with Stacy Ballis and Jen Lancaster at 7 p.m.. This is my second year in a row to participate in Witty Women Writers, and I have to say, it's one fun reading event. Do come out and say hello if you can. Last year, I read excerpts from my mortifyingly silly grade school diary. This year, well, you'll have to show up to find out. Maybe it the story of the I saw Morrissey in a record store. Maybe it's more pages from the infamous diary of my early years. However! This event gets packed so give a call and let 'em know you'll be there. (773) 293-2665....
Chariots on Fire - Eric Liddell ran a 9.7 second 100
2008-06-06 09:50:00 In 1924, Eric Liddell ran 9.7 seconds for the 100 - 100 yards that is, not meters, which is equivalent to 91.44 meters. Yes, it’s hard to believe we have only increased (or decreased) 8.56 meters or 28 feet - 1 inch in the last 84 years! (Thanks to Matt Bogdanowicz for pointing this out) Who ...

2008-06-03 15:13:00 In April, I wrote Predicting 4×100 meter Relay Potential. So with Usain Bolt’s recent 9.76 and 9.72 World Record, you have to wonder what the Jamaican team can run for the 4×100 meter relay. Imagine with perfect baton exchanges what they can run. Here is the fantasy line up with Marvin Anderson and Dwight Thomas as alternates: Nester Carter ...
First RFID Lap Counters, Now Microchipped Olympic Tickets?
2008-05-31 09:56:00 If you run road races, or the 10k on the track, you probably are aware of the timing chip strap that goes on your shoe. This is RFID technology or Radio Frequency Identification. It’s not a big deal: your name and personal info is embedded on that chip and every time you cross the start ...
Alltel Wireless Sponsors Tyson Gay
2008-05-16 09:09:00 Paul Klein of ABC once said “TV is the business of selling audiences to advertisers”. How true. Rewind to the 2000 Sydney Olympics where all the finals were tape delayed “live” on TV, at least in North America. Immediately “live on tape” after Michael Johnson’s 400-meter final, where he won his second consecutive 400 meter Gold medal, we ...

Inspirational and Motivational Sports Team Stories
2008-05-13 09:41:00 Caroline Kluft and JJK, step aside. Last week I covered some good sportsmanship and bad sportsmanship stories. Now we need some motivational sports team stories. In High School and College Track and Field, I cannot stress the importance of scoring points. Even scoring a single point makes a difference between winning or losing ...
Bad Sportsmanship Stories? Canada Summer Games 2001
2008-05-09 09:48:00 On Wednesday, I wrote about Good Sportsmanship Stories. Now we need some bad ones. I remember the 1972 Olympics Basketball final where the USA lost to the Soviet Union after 3 disputed calls by the referee going against the Americans. They boycotted the medal ceremony and to this day the 12 silver medals remain ...

2008-05-07 19:58:00 My Blog started as the book I never published. I liked the features of Wordpress for a CMS (content management system) and how it handles multiple categories and tags. If you like to write and want a way to brain dump your thoughts into linkable chapters, then Wordpress is the only way to ...
Good Sportsmanship Stories?
2008-05-07 09:42:00 Remember that story of the high school runner who breaks her leg in a Cross Country meet and crawls to the finish? Here’s another similar story from ESPN. Game tied 0-0 between small colleges in a women’s softball. With two base runners on, part-time starter Senior Sara Tucholsky hits her first HR of her college career. ...
10 Witty, Insulting Words You Must Know
2008-05-06 18:36:00 Written by Neatorama There is a crisis of insults on the Web. On one hand, the volume of flames is very high yet the quality is poor. Gone are the days of the razor-sharp wit of Oscar Wilde and Winston Churchill*, only to be replaced by a string of four letter words typed in ALL CAPS ...SHARETHIS.addEntry({ title: "10 Witty, Insulting Words You Must Know", url: "http://www.bspcn.com/2008/05/0-6/10-witty-insulting-words-you--must-know/" });

STOP?and take down those witty signs
2008-05-03 08:28:00 STOP…and take down those witty signs Safe driving is a concern for anyone that gets behind the wheel of a car, but one Illinois town went a little too far in its effort to promote the rules of the road. In order to get drivers to pay attention to stop signs, the village of Oaklawn, Illinois put up several humorous signs below stop signs, but the Department of Transportation rule that they were actually in violation of federal code. In all, the witty signs were placed near or under 50 stop signs throughout Oaklawn, according to FoxNews.com. While the signs don't seem like that bad of an idea, the Department of Transportation ordered that the signs be taken down or Oaklawn would lose federal funding. The total cost of the project was $1,700, but Joe Taxpayer won't be footing that bill. 3M actually funded the project as the company planned to use the signs in a promotional brochure.

According to this article from Google News, if doping controls for testosterone are to be effective, they need to take genes into account. The current ...

What Do You Do with Old Running Shoes?
2008-04-09 10:56:00 As a sprinter or runner, you know you should throw away your running shoes or training flats before the soles shows signs of excessive wear. Why? Because the padding on the inside has lost their effectiveness. This isn’t a shameless plug for Nike, Reebok, Puma or Adidas to buy more shoes. In my ...
Olympic Torch Protesters Scale Golden Gate Bridge - Ties Tibetan Flag to Ca
2008-04-08 20:06:00 One of the charities Speedendurance.com supports is the Vairotsana Foundation in Santa Barbara, CA. With all the civil unrest going on between China and Tibet, we are happy to see non-violent demonstrations in protest of human rights (or lack of in this case). While I don’t support a boycott for this summer’s Olympics, I think more people ...

The Yuppies Habits vs. Me
2008-04-01 10:22:00 Being April 1st, or April Fools Day, I decided to post some humour or satire in the world of running. Sadly, this is a true story. I am from the old school… just do the hard work, stay injury free, perform and execute on race day. No excuses, no showmanship, no hot dogging, no ...

The State of Amateur Athletics - Kiwis Pay Own Way
2008-02-16 15:52:00 We all know the amount from government subsidies (i.e. the carding system in Canada) barely pays for basic living expenses. The money does help, but often athletes rely on a part time job to make ends meet. Then there was news about the Canadian and Australian Government rewarding athletes winning a medal at the Olympics. Now, ...
Thinking witty
2008-02-13 20:24:00 Are you quick at repartee? How do you respond to someone asking “What’s up loser”? Is that where you draw your punchline? Some might say that it doesn’t matter what other potential mentally less gifted individuals loose orally. Besides their filthy slobber. And they’re right. It doesn’t change their way along the gutter. Nevertheless, it ...
Witty L?Oreal HIP cream eye shadow Product Review
2008-02-11 04:46:00 I ran to the drugstore late Friday night to see what I could see, a sort of beauty vision quest. I don’t get many of those these days so I went up and down every aisle. During these little escapes it takes a lot for me to take notice. Most of the products seem like more of the same old stuff, but when I saw the L’Oreal High Intensity Pigment section I stopped dead in my tracks. There were so many unusual looking things to tempt me, and intimidate me. When I bought the HIP cream shadow in ‘witty’ I was not at all sure I would even be able to pull it off, I had to pay because 20/20 was about to come on and surely there would be some type of issue a the counter (I’ll blog about this later). I’m not a make up artist, or even good at applying eye makeup, I always do the same thing - play it safe, classic. Saturday’s are all about family, we always go into the city with the kids and do something for them, shop the an early dinner out - so my...

book review: witty quotes of arsenal?s arséne wenger
2008-02-07 09:45:00 It's yet another (aargh!) internationals week and so I thought I'd do a quick book review. I'm a firm believer in one's humour being a firm measure of the character of a person (what does that say about moi, I wonder?), and so I've always followed with a keen interest the musings and quotes of our beloved gaffer, Monsieur Wenger. It was with some anticipation that I ordered "Quotations from the Public Comments of Arséne Wenger" compiled by...

Road Races Enforcing Bans on iPods - A Silly Rule?
2008-01-27 15:23:00 There are some good rules and some silly ones. For example, rings and earrings body piercing jewelry is prohibited in the high school system. I remember a high school female long jumper setting a PB, but when she raised her arms in jubilation, she exposed her belly button naval ring, and was thus disqualified. Then there ...
Ready for Your 45?
2008-01-25 15:10:00 This post isn’t about your next 400 meter time or moving up to the next Masters age group in a few months. If you are a hockey fan (aren’t all Canadians hockey fans by birth?) you’ve seen the Nike Commercials for “What’s your 45?” or “Ready for Your 45?” This concept is based on the average shift ...
Michael Johnson?s Nike Golden Spikes - Step Aside!
2008-01-24 21:05:00 Nike designs new running spikes for Asafa Powell This article from The Jamaica Observer made me realize the power of branding in the marketing wars between Nike and Adidas. We all remember Michael Johnson for the Golden spikes in the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. The first prototype won’t be revealed until Powell competes in his first race in ...

2008-01-18 19:37:00 Detective Joseph Franklin had been in many tough situations before. New Indoor 400m Track on the West Coast
2008-01-16 19:02:00 Unfortunately, it’s in Anchorage, Alaska. The article claims to be the continent’s only indoor full-size, 400-meter track training facility that is actually intended for track and field. Imagine that, building a track for other sports (or final exams before Christmas break!) In Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, there is the Louis Riel Dome Indoor Track which is a ...
In Which Today's Hilarious Witty Post Has Been Forgotten
2008-01-10 21:06:00 I just got home from the grocery store with Monkey. I always get him out first, and then grab the groceries as he toddles to the house in search of Blue's Clues and whatever snack I've bought for him.Today however, as I was reaching for the bag in the front seat, I realize he isn't on the sidewalk. At the same time I become aware of a truck coming down the street I am parked on. Monkey is between my SUV & Mr. Honeybell's van. I drop the groceries, begin screaming MONKEY! NO!! and rush to the space between the cars. I arrive just as the truck passes, and where Monkey has stopped his trek into the street. He stopped. Thank you Lord, He STOPPED.I will now lay him down for his nap, and retire to the living room to have a quiet breakdown. With a LARGE vodka.

2007-12-26 23:05:00 Twittering with friends seems to be the new "thing-to-do" on the web these days. Many bloggers are using it and it has even made its way into an episode of CSI! So what exactly is Twitter you ask? Twitter is an online web service that lets you post what you are doing - in 140 characters or less - in which those who are "following" can track what you're doing based on what you post. Bloggers sometimes also use Twitter to share URLs and to share quick thoughts on a variety of topics. Now I said that Twitter was a web service right? Well the Twitter developers have released an API in which developers can use to create "Twitter clients" to be used outside the web browser. Alan Le, from the company Vertigo, has utilized the Twitter API and designed a WPF Twitter client called Witty that extends the Twitter experience into Windows Vista. If you recall, WPF (Windows Presentation Foundation) is built in to Windows Vista. I also blogged about another awesome product from the Vert...

USA 1980 Olympians finally get ?Congressional? Gold Medals
2007-12-23 08:40:00 The spring of 1980 is still vivid in my memory.
