AK-AL: Berkowitz In
2007-10-11 08:10:00 Former State Representative Ethan Berkowitz, who served six years as State House Minority Leader and was the Democratic nominee for Lt. Governor last night, has decided to run for the Alaska's At-Large Congressional seat against longtime Republican Don Young.Berkowitz is the strongest challenger for the seat in years. Young has usually managed to get around 70% of the vote in every election. Last year he got an abnormally small 56% against a relative unknown, Diane Benson, who got 40%.Although the district is R+14 and went 61% for Bush in 2004, A Democratic victory is not out of the question here, especially with Berkowitz. Young's approval rating is in the tank and he's marred in scandal. The other news about this is that Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich, whose father held the seat before young, will probably not run, making it more likely he'll run for Ted Stevens' seat in the US Senate. With Berkowitz in, and Young's tanking approval ratings, I put this at Lean Republican

They have become popular with those individuals that want to place their funds in a secure account. Many misconceptions have been found with how Swiss accounts work. Many believe what they see in the movies. Only millionaires, government officials, or celebrities are allowed to hold Swiss accounts. Auschwitz Redux : A Strange Photo Album Surfaces
2007-09-22 10:40:00 The National Holocaust Museum in Washington has made public a photo album featuring SS officers and female auxiliaries from the Auschwitz concentration camp having fun times during breaks from their task of genocide. The photographs were taken between May and December, 1944. A US army intelligence officer, now retired, discovered the album in an apartment in Frankfurt. He has now given it to the museum for safekeeping.A favorite getaway location for the Auschwitz SS was Solahutte, a recreation home not far from the camp. It’s very strange to look at the smiling faces of people who were engaged in mass murder as they enjoyed singalongs and snacked on freshly picked blueberries. In one photo they look just like people on summer vacation as they lounge in deck chairs enjoying the sun. Some of the photos feature the notorious camp doctor, Josef Mengele, grinning from ear to ear. Another picture shows the adjutant of the camp, Karl Hocker, decorating a Christmas tree as though all is...

Deconstructing Tulowitzki
2007-09-21 04:11:00 Troy Tulowitzki has come on like a headwind in 2007, defying even the loftiest of expectations. At 22 years old, he has hit .294 with 22 homers and 90 RBI, all while offering arguably the best shortstop glove in the league. He has benefited hugely from the famous thin air of Coors field, hitting .327 with a .550 slugging percentage at home, while hitting only .258 with a .391 SLG away. To give you an idea, if he played every game at home, his numbers would translate to 29 homers, 117 RBI, 42 doubles and 103 runs — in brief, he would be the best shortstop in baseball not named Hanley Ramirez. So where does this leave him for 2008? How does he stack up against fellow shortstops going forward? The top three shortstops are relatively clear-cut going in 2008: Hanley Ramirez, Jose Reyes, and Jimmy Rollins, probably in that order. I would put Tulowitzki in that second teir that includes Derek Jeter, Carlos Guillen, and arguably guys like Edgar Renteria, Orlando Cabrera, and Migue...

2007-09-15 05:22:00 III. STRATEGYThis term means the combination of individual engagements to attain the goal of the campaign or war. 2007-09-14 02:23:00 II. TACTICS OR THE THEORY OF COMBATWar is a combination of many distinct engagements. Such a combination may or may not be reasonable, and success depends very much on this. Yet the engagement itself is for the moment more important. For only a combination of successful engagements can lead to good results. The most important ...
Switzerland: big profits for doing nothing
2007-09-13 17:13:00 Why is Switzerland always allowed a special status? It's as if the world feels humbled by the little land-locked country and wishes to pay homage, in money, of course. Through the alchemy of inventive politicians, it has made 'neutrality' a highly profitable virtue. The tiny country has somehow created a brand that screams 'we're not playing, so don't ask.' And boy has that paid off. Want a safe neutral place for a high-price summit? Switzerland ? they've got fantastic facilities and the passive people are great, they're never going to get in your face. Sure it will be five times more expensive than anywhere else in the world, but, hey, they're neutral, they deserve it. Want a place to build your high-profile international headquarters? Choose Switzerland ? it's beautiful, peaceful and there are fantastic restaurant so who cares about the obscene costs. That's why the Olympics is there. Unlimited funds from around the world pour into this tiny neutral country becau...

Principles of War, by Carl von Clausewitz (Part I)

As this is not always possible, theory also teaches us to calculate moral factors: the likely mistakes of the enemy, the impression created by a daring ...

This is what worries me about Switzerland
2007-09-10 13:18:00 The excellent article below was published on 7 September in "The Independant", Great Britain. It is a vivid example of what I fear. We a drifting from the former label of "Harbor of Humanity" into something of a label of "extremist racism". I felt important to share this with you. And hope that "The Indepedant" does not mind for me doing so. I requested their permission, but have not received an answer.Switzerland: Europe's heart of darkness? Switzerland is known as a haven of peace and neutrality. But today it is home to a new extremism that has alarmed the United Nations. Proposals for draconian new laws that target the country's immigrants have been condemned as unjust and racist. A poster campaign, the work of its leading political party, is decried as xenophobic. Has Switzerland become Europe's heart of darkness?By Paul Vallely, Published: 07 September 2007At first sight, the poster looks like an innocent children's cartoon. Three white sheep stand beside a black sheep. The...
