Woodworking
2008-05-12 17:01:00 I have always enjoyed working with wood and the farmhouse move has sealed the deal! Woodworking is now an official added activity to my growing list of hobbies and interests. I have taken almost every piece of old wood furniture Mitch and I own and have brought it to the basement before it even gets to enjoy being in the farmhouse. I have painted a few things, fixed a few things, sanded everything, stained and re-stained some things, and mostly have varnished everything with my new favorite thing in the world - polyurethane. Here are my Vermont Vibes Woodworking Tips:1.) Reuse!!!! Buy the old furniture and fix it up! Get some little nails, a staple gun, and a screwdriver and tighten knobs, and sturdy up legs, backings, and other hardware depending on how it is made. I am a big fan of little nails. You may need a saw and some old wood scraps to add support pieces especially to dressers and bookshelves.2.) Recycle!!! DO NOT go to hardware stores and buy wood unless absolutely n...

Readers Poll: Choose the Tagline for Woodworking Safety Week 2008
2008-05-04 09:17:00 As we kick off Woodworking Safety Week 2008, I thought I’d offer some improvement on marketing it to the woodworking community. It seemed like something was missing: a tagline. I mean, just saying “Woodworking Safety Week 2008″ sounds kind of boring, don’t you think? So I’m proposing the following taglines for your consideration. Please choose ...
Top 4 Most Used Woodworking Squares
2008-04-16 22:20:00 Woodnetter Zane Moseley wants a new square. He went to his fellow WoodNetters and said: “I’m thinking of buying a quality square like a Starrett or Incra that will last for years and give trustworth readings. The 12″ starrett combo square seems a bit long. They have a 4″ double square that looks pretty appealing. ...

5 Top Air Respirators for Woodworking
2008-04-02 00:13:00 How safe is the air in your woodshop? Even if you’re running a cyclone dust collector you still need to protect your lungs with some extra filtration. As RFeeser puts it at WoodNet: “You cannot go without an effective face mask just because you have dust collection. The air still ends up with a lot of the really fine, invisible sawdust that is the real health problem.” I found a thread at SawmillCreek asking for respirator recommendations. Then I dug around for more threads that recommend respirators AND reviews for specific models. BUT FIRST, here are some chilling quotes from ‘Creeker Lloyd Morris about air quality: I was in very good health and at 50 years old was training for a marathon and riding my bike 30 to 40 miles a week. Also no breathing problems at all for the first year of woodworking. I was the last person I thought would have any problems with a reaction to wood dust. After working on a project for about six hours last spring, I began to have...

Is an Appreciation of Quality Tools Related to Quality Woodworking?
2007-12-21 14:25:00 We had a reader post an interesting hypothesis recently, that if you’re the type who spends more money because he appreciates the differences in high quality tools, you’re more likely to put that appreciation for quality into your woodworking projects. Because it was in a thread titled “Grizzly 1023 vs. Delta Unisaw” I draw certain conclusions, ...

Woodworking Recipes
2007-06-19 13:30:00 Woodworking Recipes The Names that are in Bold are confirmed as correct as of the most recent update (Open Beta). The names that are in normal were found in Beta 2, but their stats have not been confirmed since the latest update.XPR (XP per Resource) is a concept that I use to compare different recipes. It reflects the total xp earned for that vocation (so xp of item + xp of all subcomponents from the same vocation) divided by the amount of resource used. This gives me a number that lets me compare items to see what is the best item to make to advance and how the costs compare between vocations. My only current flaw in the system is that rare items (drops from rare mobs, gems, etc) aren't weighted in such a way as to reflect the increased difficulty of getting that item. Each item has 3 XPR listed:Only primary materials (ore for weaponsmithing, wood for woodcrafting, etc)All gathered materials (so includes materials from other vocatio...

ToolCrib.com?s Ultimate Guide to Over 4,000 Free Woodworking Plans
2007-02-28 14:22:03 We recently posted about FreeWW.com, a site devoted to free woodworking plans. Judging from out site stats you guys ate them up. We set the hounds on hunting out all the free woodworking plan sites that the web has to offer, and we think we’re getting pretty close to pointing to all of them right here. If you’re wondering how we got the 4,000 number I’ll admit - it was a lot of guess work. On sites like the first one, where I estimate around 2,500 plans, I counted the number of categories (180) and multiplied that by the lowest number I found in the sampling of categories I checked in (15) and rounded down. I stayed conservative any time I couldn’t get an exact count. Scientific? Heck no! But who cares? There’s lots and lots and lots of free plans for you to start rummaging through… so DIG IN to these plans and get your butt into the work shop! (if you’d rather not go through them all by hand scroll down for a search box that lets you searc...

Popular Woodworking Manual Reveals What to Look For in Woodworking Tools
2007-02-20 08:12:04 If you’re a regular Popular Woodworking reader then you’re probably familiar with their “I Can Do That” feature which emphasizes two day shop projects for woodworkers with most of the standard power tool array. The “I Can Do That” Manual is much more than this - it’s 12 chapters and 81 pages of woodworking tool bliss that will help you put together your first full set of woodworking tools. …or figure out how to round out the tool set you already have. Download the Manual - it’s in PDF format. It’s full of great, no-nonsense insight like: “The jigsaw cuts curves beautifully and it is safe, powerful and inexpensive. (In fact, some professional cabinetmakers use their jigsaw for curves more than they use a stationary band saw.) Plus, with a little practice, you’ll find that you need very little clean-up of your sawn edges.” I’m not sure if our friends over at FamilyWoodworking and WoodNet would agree 1...

The Story of a ?Forum Assisted? Woodworking Shop: Frank Pellow?s Shop Build
2007-02-13 08:00:12 I met Frank Pellow at the fine woodworking forum FamilyWoodworking.org. He posted a link in FamilyWoodworking to his book “The Story of a Woodworking Shop,” which he describes as “a journal about planning, building, equipping, and using Frank Pellow’s shop.” He started building - and writing - in 2003, two months after he retired. His journal gives a detailed account, step by step, of how he built himself a whole new shop in his backyard. Here’s an excerpt from his preamble, where he states his intent (when he first thought to refurbish his existing wood shop instead of building one in the back yard): I want a shop with several things not provided by my current shop: ? Natural light ? Better ventilation and dust collection ? Some 240 volt circuits ? About double the space ? Wider entry doors His book, which he’s made available for FREE on FamilyWoodworking.org, is a MUST READ if you’re building and/or populating your shop. His thoroug...
The Somerset (NJ) Woodworking Show - any NYC area bloggers going?
2007-02-13 00:50:01 Feb 16-18, 2007 Garden State Exhibit Center 50 Atrium Drive Somerset, NJ (exit 19, Route 287) Sponsored by Wood Magazine This will be like my 8th or 9th visit to this show. It's like a crack house for woodworking junkies. Every conceivable tool, useful or not, is on display and usually being demonstrated. At least half of my present shop was purchased at one of these shows, including my Delta X Unisaw and Dewalt SCMS. I also load up on all my sandpaper, nitrile gloves and other consumables for the year. The prices are that good. If there's an answer to my still unanswered question, "what router bits do I need to make bolection moulding?", this is where I'll find it. All the router bit gurus are there from CMT, Freud and Whiteside. I've never done a seminar there but there are two that are particularly timely for me at this stage of the bedroom reno: Doors & Drawers and Understanding Finishes. Most of the seminars are free, BTW. read more
