Avatar [?'v?tär'] is a religious term that signifies a deity that has taken an earthly form. For example, Krishna is an avatar of the god Vishnu. In popular Western culture, the word has come to have secular meanings: 1. another version of someone or something; 2. an icon ...

Word of the day: rifty
2008-05-08 17:24:00
A strange word of the day today, in that I'm not sure who uses it, what it means or where it comes from. This copy was submitted to the subs' desk earlier this year by an English journalist based in the States:It’s mid-morning on a bleak January Sunday in Detroit, Michigan, a city much favoured by producers of disaster films because they don’t need to spend much on dressing the set. It’s a rifty old place, boasting an ambient temperature somewhere south of very freezingThe context seems to suggest that rifty means 'cold', but I haven't come across it elsewhere before or since. My Concise OED and Google aren't much help either. Anyone out there use 'rifty' at all? Or did our writer just make a typo?Detroit in winter is, apparently, rifty

Word of the Day:
2008-04-27 05:12:00
The word of the day today is Polybabydadia, a word which I have stolen without a hint of permission from the ever inventive Panda Bear MD. The rest of this post unexpectedly deteriorated into a bitter tirade, but you should be used to that by now. Polybabydadia as I see it is the condition of having ...

Word of the day: drunkorexia
2008-03-25 17:08:00
We haven't featured a good portmanteau for a while, and I have Sarah to thank for pointing out this one: drunkorexia. It's the phenomenon of women "skipping meals more and more in order to drink alcohol and remain slim". That's according to the Marie Claire website, anyway, which I have to point out I don't read that often. And yes, March is evidently 'alcohol month' on the Engine Room.Anyone for seconds?

(Day 303 / -135 lbs.) Embracing the Word of the Day
2008-03-19 17:10:00
transmute rans-MYOOT; tranz-, transitive verb:1. To change from one nature, form, substance, or state into another; to transform.2. To undergo transmutation.I love getting the "Doctor Dictionary" emails every day and try to use the daily word in conversation at some point. It doesn't always work out pleasantly. I'm reminded of the great billingsgate debacle of '02 - it isn't a good idea to yell out examples in mixed company.Today's word is a good one and has been my primary purpose for the past 303 days. It has been a gradual process of good intent, planning, and massive action and I'm becoming more pleased with the results daily. I still have a ways to go to hit optimum healthy weight but hey, one weight goal at a time.Speaking of goals, I set a goal of losing 15 pounds by March 20th about a month ago. I'm one day a little more than 1-1/2 pounds away from making it a reality- and you know what? I'm going to make it, abso-posi-lutely! You might say that I'll transm...

(Day 302 / -135 lbs.) Avoiding the Word of the Day
2008-03-19 03:23:00
indolent IN-duh-luhnt, adjective:1. Avoiding labor and exertion; habitually idle; lazy; inactive.2. Conducive to or encouraging laziness or inactivity.3. Causing little or no pain.4. Slow to heal, develop, or grow.Indolent was yesterday's Dictionary.com Word of the Day and I cannot imagine a word more so-not-the-word I want to become associated with than that. Oh wait, yes I can- just about every word that is synonymous or describing a condition resulting from anything having to do with that word. I've been there and I'm rabidly committed to not going back.I've been mixing up the workouts so that I'm doing a lot more reps at lower weights. I've also simplified my diet into an easily repeatable menu- including morning smoothies. I had planned on being a little more adventurous with ingredients but you know what? I'm sticking with what works. My focus is results and outcome right now. Variety can be a distraction- and one I think I'll avoid in the short-term.
Word! Of the Day Volume V
2008-02-26 21:14:00
So, today I had lunch with my brother-in-law, who also is a stay at home dad. We had some Chick-Fil-A. It, of course, ruled. And we talked about the new blog he started. You see, my brother-in-law is an amazing photographer and wants to promote himself and his business, which he runs hand in hand with his wife, through the power of the internet and through the platform of a blog. Together they are as talented as anyone out there; intelligent, funny, and inovative they make a great team. Anyways, I spent sometime listening to his game plan (awesome) and lent what little advice I could (took like 25 seconds). If you all want to watch a great couple with a loads of talent from their infancy in the blogosphere then check them out at jthomasblog.com (http://www.jthomasblog.com). Now, back to the business at hand. Another installment of the groundbreaking series Word! Of the Day. Enjoy!ad5YSojGSgc
Word of the day: stagflation
2008-02-11 16:09:00
The American Dialect Society recently chose 'subprime' as their word of the year, and on a similar note I think 'stagflation' is a word we'll be hearing more of in the next 12 months.A portmanteau (blend) of 'stagnation' and 'inflation', as you might imagine it describes a situation when inflation is high but the economy is stagnant. The word has been around since the 1960s, and the phenomenon occurred throughout the world in the 1970s, but I'd never heard of it until recently.I particularly like it because it makes me think of those giant inflatable reindeer that people put outside their houses at Christmas – see picture. The Wikipedia page on stagflation is informative, but heavy reading if you're not really well up on macroeconomics.
HousingPANIC New Word of the Day: "Trash-Outs"
2008-02-05 04:42:00
Too funny.Too sad.Too real. Can't Pay Your Mortgage? Trash Your House and LeaveAs housing markets tank, "trash-outs" are on the rise, leaving owners, lenders and banks fighting over who should pay the clean-up bill.On the lookout for disturbing trends? Here's one for your pile: According to a recent article in Fortune, there has been a noticeable increase in not just fraud but arson that has kept pace with the housing depression.Professionals in the insurance and lending industry are bracing themselves for all manner of similar situations, as homeowners either trash, or simply leave their trash lying around their houses, often taking off without even claiming their furniture. This is already a dirty problem in the housing business, with owners, lenders and banks having to figure out a way to stick each other with the check when tenants destroy their property on their way out the door. Woe is the person left behind to clean up the chaos.

Word of the Day
2008-01-18 04:39:00
Today’s word of the day is definitely “snow”.  The word appeared on pretty much every twitter message, IM away message, and facebook status.  Most importantly it appeared outside on the ground which meant classes were delayed today and since I have early morning classes I didn’t have any! So usually I would sit around and do nothing but I did get a lot done.  I cleaned up and did some homework.  I worked on some music.  After all that I rewatched “Lawrence of Arabia.”  Lawrence of Arabia might be the greatest movie ever made.  It’s brilliant in every aspect.  Well, I’m watching Leno for now and hopefully falling asleep soon…

Word of the day: invacuation
2008-01-14 15:09:00
Here's an email from Gareth regarding a great work-related portmanteau he has encountered:Alarming signs have recently gone up in our office informing us of the procedures we need to follow in the event of an Invacuation. An Invacuation – presumably the unloved offspring of the words "evacuation"and, erm, "in" – apparently involves workers sheltering within their office building rather than being kicked out onto the streets to fend for themselves. In our state-of-the-art Canary Wharf tower, that basically means hiding in the stairwells until it's safe to come out again, and is designed principally as the process to be followed in the event of a terrorist attack. None of this, sadly, is clear from the signs, which seem to have led to general confusion. This raises two points. Firstly, I don't care what you've called your new emergency procedure: if someone attacks my workplace then I want to get as far away from there as possible, not huddle in a stairwell. Secondly, how safe c...

Word of the day: globesity
2008-01-03 18:11:00
Recently I keep catching news stories about 'globesity', the growing problem of obesity across the globe (yes, the word is yet another portmanteau). Michael Quinlon's World Wide Words has some good info about the origins of the term 'globesity' so I won't go into too much detail. However, I have noticed several commentators talk or write about the "globesity epidemic": here in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, for example. The World Wide Words page also quotes the Guardian doing the same. This leads me to ask: if globesity is, by its nature, global, shouldn't it always be a pandemic ("prevalent over a large part of the world" OED), not just an epidemic ("widespread in a community", OED)? And if yes, wouldn't a "globesity pandemic" be a tautology anyway? And now I'm off home for my dinner.

Word of the day: fourgy
2007-12-21 15:00:00
We haven't had a word of the day for a while, so I thought I would remedy that with 'fourgy' – a portmanteau of 'four' and, um, 'orgy'. I'm sure you can work out what it means.I came across this word in Douglas Coupland's novel JPod (published 2006, and pictured right), but I doubt whether it has its origins here. IMDb lists the 2005 film Wicked Fourgy of Whorror, for example. I'm not sure I even want to know.Googling 'fourgy' also throws up the word 'twenty-fourgy', which isn't as exciting as you might imagine – it's actually an orgy of watching TV series 24. I can relate to that.On another note, this will probably be my last post before Christmas so season's greetings and all that. And now that I have been entrusted with Apus's bulging 'Black Museum' file I need never fear running out of blog material again...
