Badass Office Worker Ignores Making New Pot of Coffee
2009-09-03 14:30:00
Photo credit: Morguefile.com In my office, there's a sign above the coffee pot that says: "Drink a Cup? Make a New Pot!" This sign is in place to make sure that people who enjoy the office coffee take the time to make a new pot for those who want to enjoy a cup later -- but without the hassle of brewing a new pot. You know what I say to those people? Suck it. That's right. Because you know what I did the other day? I walked right into the break room and saw that there was exactly enough delicious coffee left in the pot for just one more cup. I took my mug, tossed in a couple of...

A former United States postal worker has been awarded two millions dollars in compensation following exposure to asbestos during his career, which subsequently resulted in him developing the deadly asbestos related cancer mesothelioma, a disease for which there is currently no cure. Sixty nine year old William Willis worked for the postal service between 1966 and ...
'Thank you Mr. Diversey Stop Worker!'

Get as much information about the employee as possible: Badge number, when/where they work, etc., and e-mail me at tswartz@tribune.com."I know people rip on the CTA all the time but I would like to rave. I absolutely love my Brown Line Diversey stop, but mostly I love the CTA worker at the station.Every morning he greets all the riders inside the lobby. I have never once seen him sitting in the booth ignoring all the people passing by. He is quick to help people at the turnstiles and ticket machines, especially those who aren't regular 9-to-5ers.I've...
Tail of two cities: Sex Worker Literati
2009-08-16 01:35:00
Photo by ExpatJaneI've never been a sex worker. The closest I got was getting someone to pay me $5 for making out with a straight girl in college. Now I do that all the time, but oddly, no one wants to fork over any Benjamins for my efforts. But I am something of a sex worker groupie, in that I am continually amazed and inspired by their stories, their perseverance and the occasional yeast infection remedy they provide me. Last week, when I was on "vacation" (bloggers don't get real vacations) in New York, I was lucky enough to catch Sex Worker Literati, a new reading and performance series hosted by Audacia Ray and David Henry Sterry on the first...
Chicago Streets and San worker: Politics and patronage determine promotions
2009-06-25 06:23:00
A former Streets and Sanitation worker is suing the City of Chicago for passing him up for a promotion that he claims was determined on the basis of political connections, and not job qualifications. James Fee said he met all the eligibility requirements for selection as a general superintendent in the department, but that the job was given to another candidate based on a hiring standard of politics and patronage....
Tech Worker Meets Real World - Recoils In Shock
2009-03-05 17:46:00
Anybody who's just breaking out into a career in tech can sympathize with this account of the woes faced by a programmer in his first four jobs. While some of you might dismiss it as whining, it is true that CubicleLand is a jungle. The main fault I can see is that the individual just needs to suck it up and keep trying. Equally telling are the comments on Reddit solicited by the author, which rapidly share their own horror stories from the trenches. Yeah, a lot of these stories sound familiar, too. In D&D terms, think of the universe as Chaotic Neutral in alignment. Sometimes you get the bear; sometimes the bear gets you. Yes, I just pulled off references to Big Lebowski and tabletop RPG in the same paragraph. Anyway, this reminds me of a few anecdotes I could share about friction I encountered in various workplaces I've had before, and what I did to solve them. Take them all as a whole approach to workplace philosophy. #1: The idea is only good if it comes from somebody else....

Are you an annoying co-worker?
2009-01-15 21:14:00
Image from Emotional Freedom TechniqueIn my monthly work health newsletter, I came across this interesting list of "How not to annoy your co-workers". Some of them are totally obvious but then some of them were things that I actually do. Oh no! I chalk it up the George Carlin quote, "Have you ever noticed that anybody driving slower than you are is an idiot - and anybody driving faster is a maniac?" Here's the list with my commentary: Loud talking, laughing and playing voicemail over a speakerphone.  Voicemail over speakerphone should a be a punishable offense.  However, some people (perhaps moi) have voices that naturally carry, and can only control it to a certain degree, barring a voice operation. And stop laughing!  Work is not supposed to be fun! Strong perfume or cologne, body odors, bad breath, or food at your desk.  I totally agree with the first three items, but food?  I have a huge pantry and a fridge at my desk and am CONST...

Union Group Uses Worker Death to Advertise for Unions
2008-12-05 19:38:00

Even though that worker’s trampling death has nothing whatever ...

-By Warner Todd Huston With more on the card check battle, we have a rally against Unions set up in Portland, Maine where members of the SEIU and the AFL-CIO confronted the pro-choice advocates in a typically uncivil, even threatening, union manner. One union thug even turned over a display table, trying to prevent the pro-choice ...
Some Thoughts on Worker Self-management
2008-08-18 11:45:00
In the comments section, huy points out that the former Yugoslavia under Tito had a different type of Communist system that allowed worker self-management of plants. That system provided a quite nice standard of living too, I am told. The former Yugoslavia supposedly had one of the highest standards of living in Eastern Europe, and was particularly good at providing plenty of consumer goods for their people. This is important because many Communist states promoted heavy industry at the expense of consumer goods, leading to much frustration.A female writer from Czechoslovakia, in a critical book on the Communist experience in that country, said that one of the things that angered the people (I would gather the women) the most was the chronic shortage of washing machines. Who wants to wash your clothes by hand? The problem with the Yugoslavian model was the workers really did run the enterprises. So they had the choice of whether to take home the profits of the enterprise as spending m...

Blackberry and iPhones and The 24-Hour Worker
2008-06-22 11:20:00
Shel Holzt writes about the developing 24-hour work cycle and he seems to think it's a good thing. I'm not certain of that, but before I take him to task, I will report that I've learned that such an addiction to electronic communications devices is not a good health practice. In fact, it's called just the term I used "an addiction." The DailyMail reports Blackberry email devices can be so addictive that owners may need to be weaned off them with treatment similar to that given to drug users, experts warned today.Wow. The DailyMail Online goes on to explain that overuse can be damaging to mental health. But interestingly it doesn't say why. Let's speculate. Perhaps overuse causes severe memory loss, because without checking your iPhone -- I have an i Phone -- you realized you actually don't remember anything. You've given up remembering because you check your iPhone all the damn time.

Law Firm Sues DHS Over Illegal Expansion of Guest Worker Program
2008-06-02 06:52:00
Remember when I wrote that the DHS rule change on the OPT program was illegal? Well apparently a powerful group of attorneys thought so too and decided to take legal action. From ComputerWorld, , H-1B opponents challenge Bush administration in court: The suit, filed in U.S. District Court in Newark, N.J., by the Immigration Reform Law Institute and joined by The Programmers Guild and other groups, charges that the administration's decision in April to extend the work period for students under the Optional Practical Training provision is little more than an effort to get around the H-1B cap limit They did this with absolutely no legal basis," said John Miano, founder of The Programmers Guild in Summit, N.J. He said the federal extension will hurt U.S. workers who are seeking job training because it will divert training resources to foreign workers. "We hear over and over again that U.S. workers do not have the skills to do the job," he said. Some of the occupational areas covered...
Worker at GM plant fired over Camaro photo leak
2008-06-01 03:57:00
Worker at GM plant fired over Camaro photo leak An electrician working at General Motors' Oshawa Assembly Plant lost his job this past week after company officials linked him to the leak of several photos showing a prototype Camaro body shell. The photos found their way onto the internet May 22nd and were published by multiple major automotive websites, including Leftlane. Details of the leak come via a source within the plant, who claims to have intimate knowledge of the controversy. According to our tipster, the employee — who has 28 years seniority — used a camera phone to take pictures of the body to show to his children at home. Unfortunately for the unidentified employee, friends of his children got ahold of the photos and distributed them on the Web. It's not known exactly what the photos depict, but it appears GM might be starting to test the assembly process at the Oshawa, Ontario plant, where the Camaro (and other Zeta-platform variants...
