Klagenfurt The pre-tournament favourites announced themselves in Euro 2008 with a 1-0 win over Poland in Klagenfurt. Miroslav Klose, a German of Polish blood, netted against the land of his fathers in the 20th minute, after Poland had committed hari-kiri with another hapless stab at playing offside high up their half, allowing Germany to carve open large spaces on the counter. Klose doubled his and his nation?s tally with a 72nd minute volley, handing the Pol...

Away from the Alps, the uninvited dream
2008-06-08 02:52:00 Now Euro 2008 is in full swing, spare a thought for those not invited to the party.36 European nations failed to make it to the Alps. England might stand out among them, but also missing is 2006 World Cup quarter-finalists Ukraine, plus nations of the calibre of Belgium, Serbia, Denmark, Slovakia, Norway and Ireland.England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland really should have revived the British Championship this summer and for extra spice added the Republic of Ireland and as a wild card, Gibraltar.A friendly with Gibraltar from any of the four UK nations with an empty diary this month would be a nice affirmation of the peninsula's desires to stay British. The Rock is not affiliated to UEFA, thanks to Spain's filibustering, so like an ugly girl or boy, they are desperate for any date. Given that it is customary to play a reciprocal fixture at your visitors' stadium after inviting them to yours, England could easily drop by for 90 minutes, though the apes would probably nick t...

EURO 2008 diary - 7th June, Kick-Off
2008-06-07 19:00:00 With Euro 2008 only moments away, the temperature is cooling.Well, it is the Alps after all. Football tournaments in the summer conjure up t-shirts and sun cream as well beer and polyester souvenirs for me as a fan but I've just donned my third layer in Interlaken.I am residing in the heart of holiday Switzerland because Basel, the arrival point for so many, has not got a bed to spare for miles around. Unlike Germany in 2006, where you could always find a room at the last minute, Switzerland simply is not prepared for the influx of fans. Shame on you for missing such an Alpine cash-cow, Heidi.'Expect emotion' promised the organizers. Well I certainly have been through a bunch the past few days searching in increasing desperation, in neighbouring France and Germany as well, for a bed within 50 miles of the host city or less than a mountain hike to the nearest train station, and which costs less than a transatlantic flight.Last night I just gave up the ghost and hopped on a train t...

England get the Blatter blessing
2007-10-25 12:48:00 Sepp Blatter has officially welcomed an England big for the 2018 World Cup, but stressed the FA faces stiff competition from other nations before it can pop open any champagne. The FIFA President met UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown at 10, Downing Street yesterday to discuss England's desire to stage the tournament. The home of football is the obvious choice as host if the World Cup returns to Europe following stops in South Africa in 2010 and, as is likely, Brazil in 2014."England is the motherland of football and I'd welcome a bid for 2018," said Blatter."But England will not be the only candidates. As well as China and Australia, there are the United States, Mexico and perhaps Canada. In Europe there is Russia and I will have talks with Holland and Belgium next month about whether a combined candidature is valid."All those candidates with the exception of England, Mexico and the United States can plead they have never hosted the finals before, but should the consensus in FIFA's co...

World Cup 2006 Finals
2006-07-10 00:32:00 This is my last World Cup post, I promise.Italian Victory! 5-3 on Penalty Shots!!!Ah, World Cup 2006 has finally come to an end with the Italians bringing home the cup for the fourth time. The match today wasn't that spectacular, there was so much stoppage and after about eighty minutes, all the players looked really wiped out. First two minutes in and Henry already gets a head injury by colliding with some Italian player and that stopped the game for like three minutes. A few minutes later, a foul to a French player occurs in the penalty area and France gets a penalty shot with a leading goal seven minutes into the game. Then at about nineteen minutes, Materazzi scores for Italy, bringing the game to a tie. During second half, its mostly a lot of 'almost' shots, but nothing in the goal. Extra time had to be played and at about 111 minutes Zidaine suddenly butts Materazzi in the chest and was sent off by the referee with a red card. When I saw that I was like "WTF?" what just hap...

fifa world cup 2006 golden ball nominees
2006-07-06 15:03:00 FiFa World Cup 2006 Golden Ball Nominees FIFA has releaed the list of the 10 players who have been short-listed for the Golden Ball Award presented to the tournament’s most outstanding player. It comes as no surprise that the list is comprised largely of players from the two finalists. Zinedine Zidane, who was beaten out for the award in 1998 by Brazil’s Ronaldo, is on the short list this year.
World Cup 2006
2006-06-23 21:18:00 Those of you who don't watch World Cup can skip this post.Anyways, I'm one of those people who don't watch soccer unless its World Cup and pretty much know nothing about the rules, but once every four years, I am, like all the sweaty jersey-wearing, face-painting, cheering soccer fans that can't afford to go to the hosting country; parked in front of the TV for the games when they come on. I know what you must be thinking, that as a girl, I only watch World Cup to check out cute soccer players and ogle at their chests when they take off their jerseys at the end of the match to trade. Okay, I admit it, that is partially true, but what I like most about watching the games is seeing the excitement of the fans and watching the strategy of gameplay used by the players. There's also something about watching the ball go into the goal, the sudden increase of your heartbeat, you hold your breath, you watch Ronaldo (or Beckam, Ronaldhino, Figo, etc.) focus on the goal, lift his leg up an...
