UNESCO's World Heritage List~ Melaka & George Town, Malaysia
2008-09-28 04:28:00 Thanks for YTL group of Malaysia, I tend to have an opportunity visiting the Hotel Majestic Melaka for a day's trip with introduction from Donnovan, a historian. There are lots of activities you can enjoy in Melaka. to find out more...A piece of great news that Melaka had been listed in UNESCO's World Heritage list since July 2008. "Melaka and George Town, historic cities of the Straits of Malacca (Malaysia) have developed over 500 years of trading and cultural exchanges between East and West in the Straits of Malacca. The influences of Asia and Europe have endowed the towns with a specific multicultural heritage that is both tangible and intangible. With its government buildings, churches, squares and fortifications, Melaka demonstrates the early stages of this history originating in the 15th-century Malay sultanate and the Portuguese and Dutch periods beginning in the early 16th century. Featuring residential and commercial buildings, George Town represents the British era from ...

Luang Prabang--a World Heritage Site Worth Your Time
2008-04-08 16:44:00 I had the incredible delight of spending 2 days and 2 nights in Luang Prabang (Lao.co.uk, Lao Embassy, UNESCO World Heritage, Luang Prabang 2 Day, Luang Prabang Travel, Wikipedia, Wikitravel, The New York Times, Travelfish.org). Luang Prabang is a flourishing and small town that is beautifully situated on the banks of the Mekong and Nam Khan Rivers (they converge in Luang Prabang). Unfortunately, I left not getting to see and do everything that I wanted to. Oh well, this just gives me a reason to came back to Laos (a country I am falling in love with!) in the near future. The first night we arrived in Luang Prabang was pretty casual. Kim, Tyler, Sonja, and I decided to find a place to watch the sunset. We didn't have to look far--we walked to Phou Si (Lao translation: Holy Mountin), which is a large hill that rises from the center of the city. Phou Si has temples scattered on all sides, and we made our way up a number of steps to Wat Phra Bat Nua. A handful of younger monks were jok...

World Heritage Park Expanded in Canada
2007-08-09 20:24:00 On Wednesday Stephen Harper 5,000 square kilometers would be added to the Nahanni National Park Reserve - a spectacular area of the Northwest Territories that, alongside Yellowstone and the Galapagos, was named one the UN's original three World Heritage Sites back in 1978."This is arguably the most important act of environmental protection in a generation," the prime minister said Wednesday. The government plans to add 5,400 square kilometres of land within the Greater Nahanni ecosystem, barring it from any kind of further development.Despite the good news "arguably" is the key word. There has been an ongoing efforts to protect in the Nahanni's entire 38,000 square kilometer watershed by both environmentalists, and local first nations who already have ceded control of 23,000 square kilometers to Parks Canada. However, proposed mining development still threatens the park from upstream sites. Protecting the entire watershed would be a solid a worth effort at protecting the health...

Stone-expert Mission in Borobudur World Heritage Site
2007-04-30 18:08:00 In consultation with the Department of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Indonesia and the World Heritage Centre, a technical mission was organized on Borobudur World Heritage Site from 27 September to 7 October 2006. Italian stone-expert Prof. Costantino Meucci inspected the site in collaboration with the team of conservationists from the Borobudur Heritage Conservation Institute. Despite the great efforts made over the years for the conservation of the stones, the monitoring programme conducted by the Borobudur Heritage Conservation Institute has shown that the rate of material deterioration of the stone continues to increase, especially as far as scaling is concerned (but also alveolization and cementation). Even if a large part of this deterioration of the stone is natural and cannot be stopped, it seems that it could be reduced by more adapted maintenance practices and treatments on the site. The Mission hence aimed at reviewing the current methodolo...
World Heritage sites in Brazil: a report
2007-03-23 20:36:00 The AdventureTravelLogue reported last November that the National Geographic and the George Washington University had conducted a third study on the situation of some of Unesco World Heritage sites. Three Brazilian sites were assessed in the report: Iguazu Falls, (shared with Argentina) received a score of 61 out of 100, indicating mixed reviews, positive and negative aspects combined together. The comments in the report were: “A small island of preserved rain forest in vastness of agricultural land almost bereft of wildlife and trees. Mass tourism, no feeling of local culture, shop-window ecology.” “Spectacular aesthetic appeal, some improvements in tourism have been made, much more needed.” “Since revitalization of the Brazilian National Park, this site has much improved.” “The national parks on both the Brazilian and Argentine sides need more transboundary cooperation. The natural aesthetic appeal continues to be a major draw. There is pl...
