2008-07-16 19:28:00 Not that it is a major surprise, but noteworth nonetheless. I’m hoping John (AvgGayJoe) may have some thoughts on this letter, released earlier today. As retired military officers, we share a natural hesitancy to engage actively in politics. There is a healthy discomfort in our profession with any political involvement because the country rightly depends on ...

Painting a target on ourselves
2008-05-31 06:56:00 A post of recent vintage (2006), though, sadly, still timely. Imagine that you live in a nation whose armed forces kill the civilians of other nations — too many to maintain the illusion it’s “collateral damage.” Yet you’re untroubled. Why? Because in your quiet assent to what was once considered butchery you know you’re not alone. These days, much of the public raises no objections when our combatants kill their non. After all, we’ve had plenty of time to get used to it. For instance, estimates of deaths for which Genghis Khan and his men were responsible in the thirteenth century run as high as 40 million, with only a fraction fighting men. But, with the onset of the Age of Enlightenment in the West, the idea of confining warfare to the battlefield was, if not adhered to, at least given lip service. Until the advent of aerial bombing. The indiscriminate killing arising from a bombardier’s difficulty distinguishing between military an...
Obama: Iran?s Dictator or US CentCom General?
2008-05-29 03:11:00 As John McCain said yesterday, “Why is it that Senator Obama wants to sit down with the President of Iran, but hasn’t yet sat down with General Petraeus — the leader of our troops in Iraq?” Good question. My tribute to warriors on Memorial Day
2008-05-26 18:16:00 War has to be the strangest human institution. It brings out the the most brutal territorial animal and tribal human in us. It also showcases extremes of selflessness, courage, and even compassion. Today, in the United States, we celebrate our warriors in a manner that, all too often, centers on the “glory” of death in battle. I’d like to extend this tribute to our living warriors — the ones who came home — and the battles they never left. I think this clip from a longer film demonstrates what war is in the most eloquent manner I’ve ever seen; and it’s done without words. It’s about 10 minutes long, but worth viewing for many of us. If you don’t want to watch that long, scrub ahead to around 6:08, and if you’re really pressed for time, go to 7:22, but I warn you; the impact will be greater if you don’t scrub ahead. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-8Ljk4AC24R4

A dose of the Great War: the story of an unsung guerilla (2)
2008-04-06 17:12:00 ?When Gen. MacArthur and his troops landed in Palo bay, several of us local guerillas paved the way for the Americans to attack Ormoc and recapture the valley. In my company, we were 50 and after three days of gunfire, our number was reduced to 29. But the reward was a swift victory. A few days later after the victory in Ormoc, a Japanese fleet was seen in the bay of Villaba and Palompon in the northwestern part of Leyte transporting soldiers from Luzon, but their reinforcement was too late. An allied fighter plane dropped several bombs on the fleet; the Japanese was caught by surprise attack, and so they had no other choice but to jump into the sea to survive.??I knew then that the war would not last for another ten years?we couldn?t afford to wait even for a year of pain and suffering. The war must be stopped. My best friend was killed when we were attacked in our barracks; he died on my arms. That was terrible, and sad. When he was dying, I did not say anything. I was silent unti...
LIFE and Bikini Atoll: The Bomb as spectator sport
2008-04-04 19:28:00 Part four in a series. The terrible specter of nuclear annihilation was now clear in the American mind, a condition that LIFE acknowledged and addressed. But in the months that followed V-J Day an odd thing happened, as military testing of the new weaponry provided an opportunity for bomb-watchers to indulge their awe without having to confront the frightful context of war. In the estimation of President Truman, America was not only the most powerful nation on the planet, it was likely the most powerful nation in history (8/20/45, 32). If the bomb did possess apocalyptic potential, at least it could now be addressed within the relative calm that attends triumph, peace, and unchallenged superiority. In July 1946, the U.S. detonated a bomb over Bikini Atoll in the South Pacific, and the following issue of LIFE presented most Americans with their first images of the test. The five-page photo-essay, a marvel of symbolic complexity, begins in matter-of-fact fashion. Just before ?Mike...
A dose of the Great War: the story of an unsung guerilla
2008-04-04 14:51:00 The World War II was the bloodiest war in human history. Heroes were rewarded with their names written in history books. The villains were remembered as war criminals. But both of them were human slayers?in a sense they?re all criminals. But according to the definition of the heroes who wrote history from the perspective of the victor?they?re the saviours of humanity, and the villains the dark cloud that murdered innocent people both military and civilians. With this, one can only surmise on how to justify the hundreds of thousands of civilians who died during the bombing of Hiroshima (6 August 1945) and Nagasaki (9 August 1945) to force the surrender of the Japanese Imperial Army. The United States forces under the command of Gen. Douglas MacArthur and the Allied Forces were, according to most history textbooks, the heroes. And the villains were the infamous Nazi Adolf Hitler who murdered millions of Jews and Emperor Hirohito of Japan; the dark horse was Josef Stalin of USSR whose for...

War and Postwar: a look at LIFE and technology
2008-04-03 20:11:00 Part three in a series. In an age and a culture dominated by scientism, the word ?sample? tends to invoke the adjectival ?representative,? and I cannot begin to imagine culling a meaningful representative sample from LIFE?s 400-plus issues. Still, it seems important to devote a few pages to what happened with LIFE and technology between the Fort Peck Dam and Apollo 17. I will center this discussion on innovations and events that, from our perspective here at the end of the century, appear to have left significant marks on history. The Medical Morality Play LIFE?s coverage of medical technology began early and covered, through the decades, the research, development, and application of treatments for a variety of diseases and disorders afflicting humanity. Vivid, often grotesque photography illustrated everything from cancer treatment to brain and open heart surgery, and the magazine?s 1937 photo-essay on cancer demonstrated the optimism with which LIFE viewed technology of the med...
