Top Ten Guys You See At Wrigley
2009-09-03 22:00:00 Give Matt Olsen's extremely offensive and stereotype-laden post about the Top Ten Female Fans You'll Find At Wrigley, I felt compelled to respond with a bunch of stereotypes of my own. Please note that, unlike Matt's list, my list is the result of decades of astute observation and careful research (performed at LOHO reserach labs located primarly in the bleachers, at The Cubbie Bear, and on the redline). FAIL. (photo courtesy Chicago Tribune) 10. The Face/Body Painter There was a reason Elaine didn't want to date Puddy anymore after she learned about his facepainting. And no, "Gotta support the team" isn't a good excuse. No self-respecting girl wants to be seen with a guy who's willing to adorn his extremely...
Top Ten Female Fans You'll Find in Wrigley
2009-09-03 13:06:00 Since both the Cubs and White Sox have given us nothing to root for in today's series finale, we decided to have some fun with the female fans that frolic within the walls of the Friendly Confines. Ladies, this one's for you. 10. OMG I'm on TVYou're on TV, we get it so stop waving and get off your cell phone! When are people like her going to be banned from ballparks?...
Wrigley with wee ones: a guest post on A League of Her Own
2009-09-01 23:04:00 When Julie from A League of Her Own asked me to write a guest post about bringing kiddos to Wrigley Field, I jumped at the chance. We've been bringing our kids to Cubs games since they were babies -- and we've learned some important lessons along the way. In fact, this Thursday, we are bringing the whole gang to see the Cubs take on the White Sox. This will be my eight-month-old's first game -- and my first time breastfeeding at Wrigley. Should be an adventure.Anyway, head on over to A League of Her Own if you want to take a peek at my tips (and add any of your own)....
Ricketts Plan for Wrigley
2009-08-26 16:33:00 Crain's Chicago Business has a story up regarding the Rickett's family's plans for Wrigley Field once they complete their deal to buy the Cubs from Tribune Company. As I reported a week ago the deal is done and will be approved by Major League Baseball shortly after the World Series. Many fans are speculating that the first thing that Tom Ricketts does as the new owner is to clean house but sources close to the situation tell me that they do not expect immediate changes. Instead, they expect the family to assess every aspect of the team from an inside perspective both on and off the field before they implement the changes that they have been considering since they first...
Ricketts' plan for rickety Wrigley
2009-08-25 22:33:00 We're starting to get a sense of the direction Tom Ricketts may take the Cubs. Earlier today ESPN 1000 reported that Ricketts plans to retain team president Crane Kenney -- an old Tribune hand. That would seem to bode well for GM Jim Hendry and the rest of the front office. And Crain's Sr. Reporter Mike Colias has gained some insight on Ricketts' plans for cramped, crumbling, revenue-under-generating Wrigley Field. Ricketts is likely to wait four or five years before undertaking a major ballpark renovation. It may take him that long to figure out how to pay for it. What he's planning may surprise you. Check it out....

Blackhawks are Chicago's No. 1 spectator sport; Wrigley stinks
2009-08-21 20:28:00 For a pro sport that is treated at best as the fifth most popular in Chicago, and that's only on their good days, the Blackhawks have a special edge that elevates their appeal and makes them contenders for being ranked the No. 1 spectator sport in the city. That would be you. And you. And you. And you. I hope I can stop now. My mother told me never to point my finger. The Blackhawks are a much bigger deal from a perception standpoint because of its fan base than they would be otherwise. The argument can be made that, except for the Cubs, the energetic environment and DNA-type aura that's created by Blackhawks fans is a palpable part of what really sells...

What Kind of ivy Grows at Wrigley Field?
2009-07-20 05:32:00 Parthenocissus Tricuspidata, commonly known as Boston Ivy is a member of the grape family. It is also known as Japanese creeper, Grape Ivy or Japanese ivy. This is the ivy that covers the outfield wall at Wrigley Field. Boston Ivy should not be confused with English Ivy, Hedera helix, or any hybrids, especially if you are growing a Cubs themed garden like the reader who Email me the question is doing. If you want accessories for a Chicago Cubs themed garden you can find many garden gnomes online to suit your needs....

Wrigley On a Budget
2009-04-21 20:23:00 Look kids, the economy is rough right now. Not everyone can afford to drop $150 for tickets and a bunch of food at a ballgame. The Tribune, ever vigilant in its quest to help out the "regular guy," has published an article entitled How To Save Money at Cubs/Sox Games. Let's see what they have to say, shall we? At Wrigley Field? There are four remaining "Bronze" home games on the schedule, with tickets starting at $9. They are Thursday vs. Cincinnati, May 5 vs. San Francisco, May 14 vs. San Diego and Sept. 2 vs. Houston. ?The Cubs offer a 50 percent discount to college students for tickets to certain games. ?There is a 25 percent "early bird" discount on all non-alcohol concession items for the first hour after the ballpark opens. Wait. That's it? Come on. I can think of at 50 more ways to save money at Wrigley. Don't believe me? Here we go. 1. First, if you're a woman, there's no reason you should be paying to go to a Cubs game. There are plenty of men with tickets despe...
Obligatory Peavy Stuff and Hawks at Wrigley Diary
2009-01-01 19:03:00 First, the Peavy stuff: (thanks to Tim over at mlbtraderumors.com for putting all of this in one place, thereby making my morning after much easier) Yahoo's Tim Brown asked Padres GM Kevin Towers whether the Cubs' talks for Jake Peavy might reopen now that they've freed up cash. Towers' reply: "Doubtful." To Tom Krasovic, Towers said, "The Cubs' most recent trades have no bearing or connections with us and the Cubs in a potential Peavy deal." Krasovic notes that one big factor for the Cubs remains getting approval from new ownership to add Peavy's $16MM salary to the 2010 payroll. Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times agrees that the team's trade of Mark DeRosa "was made independent of Peavy considerations." Brown says the $8MM or so the Cubs cleared from the '09 payroll is to pay for Milton Bradley, their top right field target. Bradley wants three years and $30MM and the Cubs will approach that. Bruce Levine of ESPN Radio considers the C...

States's bid to buy Wrigley Field goes down on strikes
2008-06-10 15:43:00 Former Gov. Jim Thompson struck out Monday in his efforts to have the state buy and renovate Wrigley Field without raising taxes. Thompson finally acknowledged what the Sun-Times has reported for weeks: that the Illinois Sports Facilities Authority's creative financing plan relied on the untested concept of "equity seat rights" and that the Tribune Co. would not go along with it. "The Tribune believes that ISFA's participation in such an acquisition requires either the transfer of future sales and amusement tax revenue from transactions at Wrigley Field for the next 30 years or the imposition of new taxes or the transfer of existing ISFA funds now pledged to projects at U.S. Cellular," Thompson said in a written statement. "ISFA cannot agree to this. In our judgment, there are no votes in the City Council or in the Illinois General Assembly for transferred or new taxes for Wrigley Field. And we cannot break the promises we have previously made to the White Sox under our lease term...

A new trend at Wrigley after opposition homer?
2008-04-18 16:40:00 Chicago Cubs manager Lou Piniella said Thursday that seeing 15 balls fly onto the field after an opponent's home run is something he never had witnessed before. It happened Wednesday night after Adam Dunn's home run onto Sheffield Avenue, when some fans who had baseballs threw theirs back after the ball that landed on the street was tossed back. "What's amazing is they beat each other up trying to get these balls during batting practice and they scrape their knees and elbows, and I've seen some fistfights out there," Piniella said. "And all of a sudden they gave them up rather easily."The Cubs hope that the home run barrage doesn't become a trend. Eight fans were ejected from the ballpark Wednesday night for throwing balls on the field.
