A powerful storm halted Monday night’s game between the Houston Astros and Chicago Cubs, and fans at Wrigley Field were advised to take cover on the concourse during the delay. The game was stopped at 7:39 p.m. because of rain with Houston leading 2-0 in the top of the sixth inning. The National Weather Service ...

Anyone else getting the feeling that this team may be better than we thought? As most of you probably know, the counterculture lost a giant yesterday: SANTA MONICA, Calif. - Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television. Some People Are Stupid. Stuff. People I Can Do Without. George Carlin, who died of heart failure Sunday at 71, leaves behind not only a series of memorable routines, but a legal legacy: His most celebrated monologue, a frantic, informed riff on those infamous seven words, led to a Supreme Court decision on broadcasting offensive language. The counterculture hero's jokes also targeted things such as misplaced shame, religious hypocrisy and linguistic quirks - why, he asked, do we drive on a parkway and park on a driveway? In the end, though, nobody took death less seriously than George: Catch you in the next life, buddy. In Macedonia, a writer gets the inside scoop on a serial killer. States's bid to buy Wrigley Field goes down on strikes
2008-06-10 15:43:00
Former Gov. Jim Thompson struck out Monday in his efforts to have the state buy and renovate Wrigley Field without raising taxes. Thompson finally acknowledged what the Sun-Times has reported for weeks: that the Illinois Sports Facilities Authority's creative financing plan relied on the untested concept of "equity seat rights" and that the Tribune Co. would not go along with it. "The Tribune believes that ISFA's participation in such an acquisition requires either the transfer of future sales and amusement tax revenue from transactions at Wrigley Field for the next 30 years or the imposition of new taxes or the transfer of existing ISFA funds now pledged to projects at U.S. Cellular," Thompson said in a written statement. "ISFA cannot agree to this. In our judgment, there are no votes in the City Council or in the Illinois General Assembly for transferred or new taxes for Wrigley Field. And we cannot break the promises we have previously made to the White Sox under our lease term...

Would a Real White Sox Fan Throw Out the First Pitch at Wrigley?

Yesterday, at Wrigley Field, there was a promotion in which 6000 kids under 13 received a stuffed bear from Build-a-Bear in a Cubs outfit. As part of the promotion, the Build-a-Bear mascot (who knew they had such a thing) was invited onto the field and threw out the first pitch. BTW, the pitch was high and inside. The person inside in the Build-a-Bear outfit had been up until that point a

A new trend at Wrigley after opposition homer?
2008-04-18 16:40:00
Chicago Cubs manager Lou Piniella said Thursday that seeing 15 balls fly onto the field after an opponent's home run is something he never had witnessed before. It happened Wednesday night after Adam Dunn's home run onto Sheffield Avenue, when some fans who had baseballs threw theirs back after the ball that landed on the street was tossed back. "What's amazing is they beat each other up trying to get these balls during batting practice and they scrape their knees and elbows, and I've seen some fistfights out there," Piniella said. "And all of a sudden they gave them up rather easily."The Cubs hope that the home run barrage doesn't become a trend. Eight fans were ejected from the ballpark Wednesday night for throwing balls on the field.

Throwing an opponent’s home run ball back onto the field has long been a tradition for Chicago Cubs fans. But how about 15 balls flying back onto the grass at Wrigley Field? Cubs | State bid to buy Wrigley might be dead on arrival
2008-03-18 00:29:00
The Chicago Tribune's Kathy Bergen and Gary Washburn are reporting the Illinois Sports Facilities Authority's bid to buy Wrigley Field may have hit a snag with some key Chicago constituents. Mayor Richard Daley does not like the prospect of sales tax revenue being diverted and the ballpark's landmark status being changed. Illinois lawmakers are resistant to the idea of spending money to help out a private business, and Cubs fans have been howling at the prospect of naming rights being sold to help fund the deal.

Apparently, the scheduled $20 Million project has turned into $40 Million due to "cost overruns", which I am unclear has to whether the Town of Gilbert is paying fully for those. They were to be splitting the cost of the complex with Big League Dreams. After the fourth year, they will be splitting revenues as well, expected to range from $500,000 to $1 Million annually.

Better Know A Blogger: Ask Wrigleyville
2007-10-30 17:36:00
> Today, Cubs blogger and alum of the best damn J-school in the nation, Wrigleyville, answers your questions. Head over to his site Wrigleyville23 for some of the snarkiest Cubs fun around. 1. (From Umbra) I've been watching ESPN lately, and more and more they refer to calling out teammates as "throwing someone under the bus."  Is this based on a true story?  Which Cubs or Cub-related person would you most like to "throw under the bus?" Wrigleyville: When I was 13, I watched nearly every single game of the 1984 season. We had just gotten cable and the Cubs were still on WGN every day. I loved the Cubs. I loved Harry Caray. And I loved Ryne Sandberg. And Sarge. I went to my first Cubs game on September 30, 1984 (and my mom went to Nuts on Clark for the first time. She still thinks that's the greatest place in the world). Anyway, the debacle of October 1984 came right after that, highlighted (lowlighted?) by the ball going between Leon Durham's legs. The next morning, a...
Live from Wrigley (Semi-Real Time thread)
2007-10-07 02:19:00
Group, We finally got some connectivity problems resolved in the left field press box, so I may have some updates for you as the game moves forward. Anything along those lines will be posted in this thread. One quick thought for now: the Cubs have a .500 on-base percentage in this game but have scored just one run. Livan Hernandez has not pitched any better than he usually does and Melvin was a little slow in getting some action started in his ‘pen. We’ll see if this comes back to hurt the Diamondbacks. (7:17 PM CST) …“No Game 4″, a friend just texted me. Through five innings 24 Cubs have come to the plate and 12 of them reached base via a hit, walk, HBP, or error. I’m still somewhat incredulous that Melvin didn’t even visit Hernandez on the mound, and as of right now there’s no action in the ‘Zona pen. Managers would do well to learn more about DIPS theory when managing their pitchers in-game; Piniella’s hook on Rich Hill,...
