It was a fair deal and one that the companies can live with, and it recognizes the large contribution that writers have made to the industry," said Leslie Moonves, chief executive officer of CBS Corp.Moonves was among the media executives who helped broker a deal after talks between the guild and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers collapsed in acrimony. One winner in the vote was the Academy Awards, which can now be staged Feb. 24 without the threat of pickets or a boycott by actors that would have dulled the glamour of Hollywood's signature celebration. The strike's end would allow many hit series to return this spr...

TV Blogs Go Dark in Solidarity with the Writers Guild of America
2007-11-13 03:11:00
On November 13th, this blog and the blogs listed below will be on strike for the day in solidarity with the Writers Guild of America. As fellow writers and as TV fans, we are coming together to express our strong support for the writers and their goals. We believe that when a writer’s work makes money for a company, that writer deserves to be paid.   Many writers depend on residuals for a stable income, and that income shouldn’t be based on an outdated formula which ignores the existence of new media and all but a tiny percentage of DVD sales. The talented writers responsible for so much of what we love about television should and must be paid fairly and equitably, and we will stand with them until they reach that goal. For everyone’s sake, and for the sake of television, we hope both sides can come to an agreement quickly.   To further that goal, we are calling on our readers to sign this petition and to contact the following television networks, voicing support...

Bullshattuck Supports the Writers Guild of America
2007-11-08 01:00:00
BULLSHATTUCK'S OFFICIAL STATEMENT ON THE WRITERS GUILD OF AMERICA'S STRIKE As a not-very-good writer, I empathize with the 12,000 writers who always seem to be on the short end of a getting-the-shaft stick, and agree with the Writers Guild of America's decision to strike. The production companies are being uncharacterisitically greedy, and I strongly believe that writers should be paid much more - they are after all, the flesh and blood and pen juice of most television shows that use words. Said striking writer Zoe Green, who recently sold her first pilot, "This will be very tough for me personally, but I 100 percent support our cause. I'm going to be struggling on $6,000 until this ends." Writers are being forced to survive off a mere $6,000?! What do the production companies think they are - animals? Animals who write television shows? I totally know where Zoe Green's coming from - a mere $6,000 is only a year's worth of my rent. Barbaric! The strike has been supported by ...
Thoughts on Writers Guild of America Strike
2007-11-07 15:11:00
This strike is a big deal, but it’s much bigger deal for Hollywood, the producers and writers than for the rest of us. I think they are facing some specific dangers that they had better think about before they drag on too long. The actual points the union and producers are arguing about are probably ...

It looks like we’re going to be treated with reruns and ‘unscripted’ reality shows here in the US as the Writers Guild of America goes on strike. One of the main sticking points in the negotiations is what you see right here online, Internet broadcasts. Another is in DVD TV Show box set royalties. Both are areas ...

Writers Guild of America ON STRIKE
2007-11-05 07:34:00
On October 31, 2007, the contract for the Writers Guild of America, which represents 12,000 television, movie, news, and new-media writers, is set to expire. Despite more than two months of contentious talks, the usual sticking points—such as formulas for the distribution of residuals—remain. And this time, negotiators must contend with an additional problem: Neither side knows for sure where the money they hope to divvy up will come from, as new methods of content creation, distribution, and consumption emerge. With contracts for actors and directors set to expire in June, Hollywood is bracing for a meltdown. WGA Writers Guild of America is set to go on strike one minute after midnight Monday November 5, 2007 if contract bargaining fails. Strikes could start at Rockefeller Center in New York as early as 3 a.m EST and fan out to multiple Los Angeles Studios early Monday. At least audiences have this consolation: If theaters go dark and TV gets boring with re-runs, they can alway...
'The End' of TV shows? Writers Guild of America STRIKE!
2007-11-05 04:23:00
With Hollywood on the verge of all-out war, last-minute talks gave a slight hope that today's writers strike could be averted -- or at least delayed for a few days.A flurry of back-channel efforts to stave off a strike by the Writers Guild of America culminated in a Sunday meeting in Los Angeles that began at 11 a.m. PST -- only 13 hours before the official start of the WGA strike.Federal mediator Juan Carlos Gonzalez, who joined the talks a week ago, summoned both sides to the Sunday meeting in the wake of the WGA officially declaring the start of the strike.Sunday's last-ditch effort focused on those viewed as voices of moderation, such as "ER" showrunner and former WGA president John Wells. Conversations among key players from both sides focused on exploring possible concessions in hopes of luring the WGA back to the bargaining table and away from picket lines.Among key players pushing to jump-start the bargaining process -- CBS topper Les Moonves, Disney's Robert Iger, Fox's...
Writers Guild of America Has No Business Striking
2007-11-03 09:12:00
Yes, I'm in favor of writers getting as much money as possible for their work - I'm a writer (published novelist, nonfiction and textbook and op-ed author), and I have no allergy to money, believe me - but television writers going on strike makes no sense for at least three reasons:1. Television viewing is declining. Writers want to get a piece of the Internet, DVD, mobile phone action. Makes perfect sense. But it doesn't make sense to adopt a strategy that will drive even more viewers away from network and cable television, which is still the primary venue for television.2. Writers are not exactly starving - it's not as if they would slip into poverty if they didn't go on strike. The economic circumstances are not dire enough to warrant a strike.3. I think, in general, that writers are an elite enough group that they don't need a union. The worker being taken advantage of by the greedy capitalist just doesn't ring true or apply to the television writer. So, I hope the W...
