Not The Cure for Writers Block. (But it helps.)
2012-01-06 17:41:00
As is apparant from the cobwebs around here… I’ve suffered from a long bout of writers block and frustration. Never a pleasant experience and hard to overcome. With the onset of the new year, I figure I wasn’t quite ready to leat “Cinema Fromage” die quite yet, so as resolutions and such go, I’m back. ...
Dog Writers? Oscars ? The 2011 DWAA Awards
2011-12-18 06:07:00
I've just received the happy news that my blog post, What You Can Do to Avoid Getting Bitten By a Dog ?10 Common Mistakes People Make Greeting Dogs is in the running for a prestigious DWAA (Dog Writers Association of America) Award. The last time I had the honor of being in the running was back in 2007, when my book Dogs of Dreamtime was a finalist in the general book category. It lost to a book about the Search and Rescue dogs that worked at the Twin Towers on 9/11 entitled Dog Heroes of September 11th by Nona Kilgore Bauer. For those of us who write about dogs, being selected as a finalist by the DWAA is our equivalant of being nominated for an Oscar. Same idea of being recognized by our peers in a big way. The competition in my category is pretty stiff again this year, so while I'll keep my fingers crossed, I won't be holding my breath. : ) Award night is in February. Wish me luck!

PHOTO CREDIT: MICHAEL BROSILOW.George Bernard Shaw.Chicago, Wednesday, May 4, 2011. The times they are a changing but in many ways remain the same.  Although life was very different in George Bernard Shaw's "Heartbreak House"--a 1919 piece first presented after World War I--than today, human nature remains intact.  Shaw--the master of wit and social thought--bitingly chronicles the demise of the leisure class in his favorite play," Heartbreak House".Shaw's story which manages to put together a microcosm of class from the upper-class to the working poor finds a contemporary niche under the magnificent direction of William Brown marking his third production of Shaw's work for Writer's Theatre, in addition to directing the world premiere of Brett Neveu's "Do The Hustle", "Old Glory",...

Casting My USA Basketball Writers Association Ballot

A secret ballot? Nah, when it comes to college basketball, I'll shout my opinions and evaluations from the mountain top. I've covered a lot of teams both in the Big Ten and the Big East this past season: Illinois, Northwestern, Notre Dame and DePaul, so let's begin. We start by choosing my District: V. of course, covering Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota and Indiana, or as well call it The Sports Bank territory. Here's who excelled in representing the Great Lakes/Upper Midwest....

(In case you're curious, Tina's book, "Bossypants," is out April 5, according to amazon.com.) Becoming an author can't be that hard, right? Here are a few more celebs RedEye hopes to see in hardcover ASAP....

How Many Words Did Shakespeare Know?

Forsgate Country Club hosts golf writers with third annual Writer Cup Tourn
2010-07-28 23:12:00
Tomorrow marks the third annual "Writer Cup", a tradition begun by Forsgate Country Club to celebrate golf writers of the MET/GAP regions. There are two courses at Forsgate CC, the Banks and Palmer Courses. We're invited to play the historic Banks Course which is lush and deeply bunkered as compared to the Palmer Course which is laden with water hazards. I prefer sand to water any day on a golf course! Designed in 1931 by Charles ?Steamshovel? Banks, the Banks Course is a par 71 which stretches to 6,844 yards from the tournament tees and is a true test of skills for the above average golfer. This is probably why I'll stick with the forward tees during this tournament! Here are some recent accolades about Forsgate Country Club: Jersey Golfer Winter 2006 Magazine ranked the Banks Golf Course at Forsgate Country Club #10 among the top 50 Best Golf Courses in the state of New Jersey. "The Met Area's Top 50 Courses", The Met Golfer, April 2007 "The Best of Northeast Golf"; 200...

Team Coco Presents: the Conan Writers Live
2010-06-18 04:38:00
I've seen several TV tapings in person, and it's usually a retched experience.  The director, producer, or camera man makes the audience do take after take of laughs, cheering, and clapping.  This can go on for half an hour, usually forcing me to find something awkward about the way I clap or laugh.  But tonight at the Bank of America Theatre, that was not the case.TBS put a concise and fun show and TV taping together for the Just for Laughs festival.  After asking the audience to give them just a few sound bites of applause, the show began.  It was nice to see a production have faith in the comics to get big enough laughs that they didn't need...

I Want to Fight the Writers of 'Lost'
2010-05-25 13:31:00
An image from a scene that had absolutely nothing to do with anything that happened on the show for the last six yearsLet's just get this out of the way: the "Lost" finale was dreadful. To be fair, the entire last season was pretty pathetic, but the final episode--with more pointless hype surrounding it than a Cleveland Cavaliers playoff series--was insulting. With all due respect to my colleagues, Kyra Kyles and GeekToMe, from a basic storytelling standpoint this season's "sideways" storyline was a disaster. Why do we care about the repercussions of the main storyline if there's this alternate reality/ purgatory where everyone has a date at the end? Sawyer-Juliet: back together. Charlie-Claire: undead and in love. Jack-Kate: boomtown....

Comic Culture Warrior - From Cheesy Movies to Pretentious Writers
2009-09-07 03:01:00
This Labor Day weekend will find me hard at work editing video from Chicago Comic-Con. I've got a few interviews to share, but in the meantime, here are some more fun segments from my Comic Culture Warrior program on YouTube.  This first one has comic book retailer Jose Melendez and I discussing the merits of cheesy cinema (i.e. Crank 2: High Voltage): And in this second segment, we discuss what the future may hold for Kieron Gillen, writer of the hit indie-title PHONOGRAM and the new writer of Marvel Comics' THOR: (You can never tell what Jose is going to like.)So, what cheesy flick do YOU like, yet are afraid to admit?...
Beat Writers Project the 53

Both of the local beats have projected the Bears' 53-man roster and there are a few surprises.Click here to read David Haugh in the Trib.Click here to read Brad Biggs in the Sun-Times.Both men have some similar opinions but I'll just respond to the trends I'm seeing.1. I hope the Bears do not cut Craig Steltz in favor of Josh Bullocks.  Bullocks may have a lot more starts under his belt but those starts are for that horror show of a defense down in New Orleans.  Bullocks has no upside and Steltz has a ton, in my opinion.  It'll take a day for someone to scoop him up.2. On the "scoop up" trend, I agree with Biggs on this one:...

Travel writers name Chicago a Top 5 music city
2009-08-26 22:00:00
Take that, Branson, Missouri!OK, Branson probably isn't our musical rival. But they did place ninth in the Society of American Travel Writers' list of the Top 10 music cities in North America. Where does Chicago rank? Number five, baby, behind juggernauts New Orleans, New York, Austin and Nashville, and right ahead of blues haven Memphis. (Montreal, Las Vegas and Denver fill out slots 7, 8 and 10.) The list highlights the Old Town School of Folk Music, Lollapalooza and Chicago Symphony Orchestra on top of the abundant opportunities Chicago provides for seeing a variety of live music every night. Thanks for noticing! How do you feel about being ranked fifth? Should we be above NO, NY, Austin or Nashville? Would our...
