First team sets a date for Google Lunar X-Prize attempt
2008-06-24 09:16:00 From Engadget: Just under a year after Google ponied up the money for the Lunar X Prize, there's a team set to attempt a launch and claim the $20M reward. The Aeronautics and Cosmonautics Romanian Association (ARCA) has scheduled up a launch of a 92-pound rover called the European
Hybrid Technologies Plans X-Prize Entrant
2008-06-02 18:25:00 C|Net's News.com reports that Hybrid Technologies is preparing to submit a green sports car for the Automotive X Prize. The version submitted for the Automotive X Prize will be a gas-battery hybrid that will get an equivalent 220 miles per gallon. An all-electric plug-in hybrid version will also be available, and will be expected to get 150 to 180 mpg. The company expects to have a drivable prototype by September, and has ambitious plans for a wide-range of vehicles that run on batteries, not just cars.
Lunar X-Prize Entrant, Team Cringely, pulls out and goes alone, telling X-P
2008-06-01 23:15:00 I haven't been following the Lunar X-Prize much except as part of the remarkable private space program genesis we are seeing right now. But it appears from this discussion that the X-Prize Foundation (XPF) is doing a poor job in managing the contest. But I hadn't counted on the X Prize Foundation, which has done an extremely effective job of administering the contest to make it harder and harder to win. The XPF has apparently driven out one of the most innovative teams. And one that had a good chance of winning. Team Cringely is so confident of its mission plan and technology design that it is continuing full-speed ahead without the carrot of a $20MM prize for winning. Bureaucracy is as bureaucracy does. pity.

Automotive X Prize is hiring, team size to double
2008-05-11 21:56:00 If the Automotive X Prize has caught your attention and you'd like to do more than read about it, good news: the X Prize Foundation is hiring. As Cristin Lindsay, the senior director of the Progressive Automotive X Prize, told AutoblogGreen, these are four key positions and I'm thinking there's probably at least one of our readers who'd make a good Team Development and Relations director, a Sponsorship Activation and Relations director, a Education Programs director or an Executive Assistant. The hires are part of a doubling of the Auto X Prize team in the coming months, a move that certainly implies things are going well in the search for the 100 mpge, mass market car. One requirement that's the same among all of these jobs is that they are located in Santa Monica, California. I don't think you'll get moved to the head of the pack if you tell them you read AutoblogGreen, but it couldn't hurt.

New York 2008: Motive Industries? muscular X Prize entry vehicle needs a na
2008-03-22 23:02:00 Of the 60+ teams that have signed a letter of intent to participate in the Progressive Automotive X Prize, about 15 were on hand at the New York Auto Show. With only four cars on stage, it's easy to calculate that some teams arrived sans vehicle. The group from Motive Industries had just a little folded flyer to show what they've been working on for their entry vehicle. The basic idea for the as-yet-unnamed Motive vehicle is an electric car with an on-board ICE for range extension. The real challenge for Motive will be convincing everyone that "filling up" via quick, robot-aided battery exchanges are the way to go. Four-passenger and full size with biomaterials in the body panels and elsewhere, the vehicle is just now moving off of the design pages. Motive's Darren McKeage and Nathan Armstrong were in New York to give the public a first glimpse of this new car. You can view the flyer in the gallery below and listen to the duo by clicking play. Auto X Prize will be worth ten million, sponsored by Progressive Casualty I
2008-03-20 13:16:00 We'll have full coverage from New York of the Automotive X Prize's new details in a few hours, but CNN has just announced that the total prize purse will be ten million dollars. That's the same as what was given for winning the Ansari X Prize, which sent private citizens into space. The title sponsor for the green car event will be Progressive Casualty Insurance Co., according to the AP. The ten million dollars will be split between the winners of the different Auto X Prize categories, one each for mainstream and alternative cars. The "mainstream cars" look normal (four wheels, at least) need to have room for at least four people with standard vehicle features (climate control, audio system and at least 10 cubic feet of cargo space) while hitting 60 mph in under 12 seconds. The last two requirements will be the toughest: 100 mph top speed with a 200 mile range. We'll have more later on what I now assume will be called the Progressive X Prize.[Source: CNN, AP]

New York 2008 preview: Automotive X-Prize will name title sponsor, big buck
2008-03-13 23:18:00 I'll forgive you if you thought the Automotive X Prize had started already. Not the actual race, of course, which is coming in 2009-2010, but the preliminary parts. I guess all of those teams that have signed letters of intent to participate were active in the pre-preliminary-phase. The official start of the Automotive X Prize will be a week from today at the 2008 New York International Auto Show. That's when the organizers will be announcing not only the title sponsor of the event but also the exact amount of the multimillion dollar prize purse. We'll be on hand for the big reveal, next week and we'll be checking out which of the 60 announced teams will be on hand for our cameras and recorders. Video: Why Romania May Win The Google Lunar X-Prize
2008-03-03 17:50:00 With almost a dozen teams competing for Google's Lunar X-Prize, one would probably expect a team located within a major space power to dominate this international space race. While a few teams are presenting innovative ways of landing on the Moon, most have yet to figure out how to leave their home planet without going broke.Ironically their seems to be only one team that has created an inexpensive way of sending their "little rover" beyond our sky--and the fact that this team is located in Romania may humble competing teams in both the US and Canada.(Arca Space) HAAS is an innovative air-launched, 3 stages orbital rocket, preliminary designed in 2006 using the technology developed at ARCA during The Ansari X Prize Competition and The European Private Manned Space Program. The rocket was named after Conrad Haas* (1509-1579) Austrian-Romanian medieval rocket pioneer, the first creator of multiple stages rockets. ...The HAAS rocket will be lifted at 18.000m altitude with the help of...

Auto X Prize releases teaser video
2008-01-18 23:54:00 The Automotive X Prize is not a movie (but it would make a good documentary, I'm guessing), but that didn't stop the organizers from asking Studio Vagabond to create a teaser video for the upcoming event. If you need a three-minute way to explain to a friend what the Auto X Prize is all about, this is a good way to do so. There's nothing here that can be called news (all the cars are nondescript and the video just gives a general overview of what we can expect over the next few years), but the graphics are well-done and it certainly drives home the point that the race for the 100 mpge car will be fun to watch. AutoblogGreen will provide you with a front-row seat, and now you can be really thankful this isn't a movie we're talking about. [Source: Auto X Prize]
Detroit 2008: X Prize contender will add solar thermal collectors, PV panel
2008-01-16 19:47:00 You can probably guess that the photo above was not taken anywhere near Cobo Hall during the Detroit Auto Show. Nope, that green Chevy Blazer is sitting in Lake Havasu, Arizona. The connection to Detroit is that Jim Stansbury, the founder and CEO of the Physics Lab of Lake Havasu, was in town to talk up his team's official contender status in the Automotive X Prize. Stansbury and Audrey Perry, the lab's VP of marketing, sat down with AutoblogGreen for about 20 minutes yesterday to describe why they think a modified Chevy Blazer (!) with a few off-the-shelf parts has a chance to win the Prize. Do you want to reread that? A Chevy Blazer as the green car for the new millennium? How is this possible? The best way to learn is to give Stansbury a listen here (19 min, 13MB).Stansbury's idea is to convert the large Blazer into an electric vehicle and then outfit the beast with a few different technologies that will all "absorb the energy around us, namely the sun" and power the batteries...

2008-01-12 01:27:00 The Automotive X-Prize organizers are gearing up to officially kick off the competition early this year and people will get their first opportunity to meet some of the competitors next week at the Detroit Auto Show. Seven of the teams that have signed letters of intent to compete will be on hand at the X-Prize booth during the media and industry previews before the show opens to the public. Visionary Vehicles, Velozzi, Valentin Technologies, Titling Vehicles Australia, Alpha Core/Poulson Hybrid, Psycho-Active and Michigan Vision will all be there, as will we, starting Sunday at Cobo Hall. Visionary Vehicles is the latest project from Malcolm Bricklin. AutoblogGreen will be sitting down with Mr. Bricklin to discuss his project so stay tuned for that.[Source: Automotive X-Prize]

Odyssey Moon Enters Google X Prize
2007-12-07 15:13:00 Odyssey Moon, a British-based private spaceflight company, is seeking Google's $30 million X-Prize for successfully landing a rover on the Moon.Headquartered on the tax lenient Isle of Man in the Irish Sea, the company, brainchild of CEO Robert Richards (founder of International Space University), is fixed to win this new age space race. The company consists of many experienced space engineers, and is potentially one of the strongest competitors at this point. The Google X-Prize requires a team to land a rover capable of moving 500 meters and transmitting back video, data, and images to qualify for the entire prize by December 31st, 2012.Richards, confident of his company's ability, has been quoted as saying, "We believe the Google Lunar X Prize goals are achievable. And we do intend to win."They intend to reduce the cost of moon travel "by an order of magnitude."He describes the moon as "an eighth continent rich in energy and resources floating just offshore." X Prize Brings Targets 100 MPG
2007-12-06 22:43:00 The X Prize is set to announce its newest prize competition for car designs that exceed 100 mpg. So far 43 teams have signed up for the competition and photos of the cars have surfaced. Now, I'm a big fan of cutting down on emissions and gasoline usage, but some of these cars are just plain ugly. I'm not talking about buck teeth ugly, I'm talking third eye and 12 toes ugly. Someone should tell George Clooney that he shouldn't lean on the car. I wonder how many clowns will pop out. Check out more pictures here.

X-Prize Lunar Lander Competition
2007-12-05 00:58:00 To paraphrase Austin Powers - "Yay Capitalism!" I think there is a remarkable group of efforts going on right now in the world of space technologies. And all of it is being spearheaded by private companies. Not by huge governments. Where NASA is struggling to set a roadmap and plan for hundreds of different missions, here we have small nimble private corporations creating solutions to problems. Here is Armadillo Aerospace attempting to capture the Lunar Lander X-Prize. > > > They're sponsored by nVidia, which to me seems a cool corporate investment. Google is in the act as well. > > > The next couple of decades could be very interesting. I would like to wholeheartedly encourage the multitude of high-tech billionaires that read the Rivet to invest in the emerging private space race. C'mon you already have 3 Ferraris, what's left? How about a moon base. Related articles: SpaceX Flight Review

JAXA being Privatized in order to qualify for Google Lunar X Prize?
2007-09-17 23:39:00 It seems that the Japanese government is planning to privatize the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) so that it will qualify and be in the running for Google and the X Foundations 30 million dollar worth of prizes for getting robotic rover on the Moon. Japan only last week launched a very publicized lunar orbiter from the small island of Tanegashima off the southern tip of Kyushu Island, southern Japan using the domestically developed H-2A rocket. I wonder if this will be official and how it will develop. Big thanks to Tori for pointing this out to me. [ Via - risingsunofnihon ]

Google Sponsors Lunar X Prize
2007-09-15 18:00:00 I see this as a very positive development. Similar to the original Ansari X Prize which was a $10,000,000.00 prize for the first spaceship to launch twice in two weeks, this partnership of the X Prize Foundation and Google is offering a $30,000,000.00 prize for the first privately built robotic lander to reach the moon. X PRIZE Unveils Multi-Mullion Dollar Automotive Prize Contest
2007-04-04 00:31:00 In 1996, the X PRIZE Foundation was troubled by what it saw as 40 years of stagnation in spacecraft innovation, so they "sought to bring about a radical breakthrough in the advancement of human spaceflight." Eight years later, the foundation sparked headlines around the world when they awarded their $10 million prize to aerospace designer Burt Rutan and Microsoft's Paul Rubin for successfully launching a personal spacecraft into the earth's orbit twice in two weeks. Now they've set their sites on spurring innovation closer to earth. We learned today from Chris Baskind at Lighter FootStep that the X PRIZE Foundation has formally announced its rules for the new Automotive X PRIZE. The multi-million dollar prize will be awarded to the teams in two categories who build cars that get at least 100 miles per gallon of gasoline (or its equivalent with other fuel types). The first category is for a "mainstream class" automobile that can carry four or more pass...
