Goldeneye to XBLA - Keep Dreaming, in Licensing Hell
2008-08-07 02:15:00
One of the only console shooters I was ever really in to was Goldeneye on the Nintendo 64.  I put the game on my top five fps games ever and on my most desired remakes/rereleases.  The game was well balanced, offered tremendous multiplayer features for the time and made the most of the iconic Bond universe. So why hasn't this game been rereleased yet on XBLA or Nintendo's Wiiware?  Rare made a new version of the game but Nintendo and Microsoft couldn't solve their differences an...

Aces of the Galaxy hitting XBLA next week
2008-05-30 12:30:00
It seems it's been a trend lately for XBLA games to release in pairs and while we were a bit less than thrilled with this week´s releases, next week does look better. In addition to Roogoo, June 4 will also see the release of the co-op space shooter Aces of the Galaxy. Little to nothing has been revealed about the game so far but XBLA thankfully gives us trial versions, and the graphics and co-op play give us more than enough reason to give it try. From what we can infer the game could be worth its 800pt price tag, we just wish Artech had gotten more out there about it.
No spring update but fixed XBLA coming
2008-05-26 14:03:00
Acording to an interview with Marc Whitten on Next-Gen, XBOX 360 will not have a spring update this year: there would be no spring dashboard update for Xbox 360 owners this year, saying that resources were instead focused on “building the proper infrastructure and scale for the service.” There will however be a change to DRM policy and a tool released next month that will allow 360 owners to re-license content to a single console—finally fixing the issue that forced gamers playing XBLA games to be connected to Xbox LIVE if their 360 broke down and was replaced Yay and DOH!!
XBLA Proves Bigger Is Badder
2008-05-20 19:34:00
Talking with GamesIndustry.biz, Microsoft's Worldwide Games Portfolio Planner for Xbox Live Arcade, David Edery just confirmed that the XBLA's file size restriction has just been increased as Microsoft does away with the old 100MB limit. As part of the "steady progress", Edery confirmed word that they've raised the XBLA's size limit to a hefty 350MB after they've been "listening to our partners, listening to our customers to try and get a feel for what's right." The raise in file size limit is, what we think overall to be a good thing for the market that will probably allow richer, deeper and more involved XBLA games. We agree with Edery, it's just "good for the ecosystem."

Nintendo Courting Disgruntled XBLA Developers With WiiWare
2008-03-19 04:33:00
Is Nintendo actively poaching indie developers out from under Microsoft and Xbox Live Arcade? One report says yes, it is.Is the rug about to be yanked out from under XBLA?The future of Nintendo's WiiWare game download service is still very much unknown, but that hasn't stopped the company from greasing the wheels with back room deals meant to entice small and medium-sized developers under their wing.Their first target? Disgruntled Xbox Live Arcade developers, and in this case the house that Mario built isn't playing its usual game of family friendly fun -- they're playing hardball.U.K.-based Develop magazine reports that as Nintendo prepares for the North American WiiWare launch on May 12, it is "actively briefing studios" on what makes the service such a great platform to make titles for.According to anonymous developer sources cited by Develop, Nintendo looks to be stressing the fact that their service won't be flooded with retro titles and that developers can get a better ro...
Capcom pushes the boundries on XBLA
2008-03-17 15:09:00
Most people might not know that Microsoft puts a cap on the size of XBLA titles.  Well, according to Gamespot, Capcom makers of SSFII Turbo HD Remix and Bionic Commando Rearmed, have gotten Microsoft to temporarily lift the 150 mb file size limit on SSFII Turbo HD Remix, so that the PSN and XBLA versions are identical. "Given the sizeable content in Bionic Commando Rearmed and Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, Microsoft allowed Capcom to work with a larger file size limit for both of those titles in order to provide gamers with the game experience that Capcom desired, such as full hi-res textures (on Bionic Commando Rearmed) or 1080p support (for SSFIIT)," said the Capcom rep. "The Xbox Live Arcade versions of both titles will have complete feature and graphical parity with the iterations that will be available on other platforms. There were never any issues with 1942 or Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3, as those titles were designed from the ground up to meet [Microsoft's...

You can bet that Wits and Wagers is XBLA boundFiled under: News, Xbox Live Arcade, Game announcementsAgain, our trusty friend the ESRB has come to the rescue in fulling our insatiable appetite for upcoming (and totally unannounced) XBLA games with their latest listing for Wits and Wagers.Wits and Wagers will be a title developed by the crew over at Hidden Path Entertainment and solely for the Xbox 360. In general, Wits and Wagers is a board game where players answer trivia and place bets on which guess is closest to the actual answer. Simple enough. Though, we're curious to see how well Hidden Path can pull off a game like Wits and Wagers seeing that their only experience on the 360 is an XNA demo and creating a trivia game isn't the easiest genre to make entertaining. It doesn't really matter though. We're just proud that we discovered another upcoming XBLA game long before its announcement. We so cool! Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments Link - Comments - Dustin...

If, on the other hand, you haven't been waiting for the game with bated breath, then we'd say it's still probably your lucky day because Rez just so happens to be a good game. We suggest you crank up the synesthetic, vibratory goodness as soon as possible. If, however, all that sounds like too much stimulation, perhaps you'd rather play a leisurely game of chess. It's still your lucky day then because Chessmaster Live is also available today. Both games can be yours if the price is right. XBLA: Rez HD and Chessmaster Live - SendMeRSS
2008-01-29 14:53:00
XBLA: Rez HD and Chessmaster LiveThis Wednesday’s XBLA update has been officially announced, and includes over the top Rez HD, and for the more reserved among us, Chessmaster, but this time online! Yes, you can play a relaxing but in some respects rousing game of chess, or partakes in the incredibly addictive and trippy Rez. Chessmaster goes without explanation basically, it will run you 10 dollars or 800 MS points, and it’s the same old chess you’ve been playing for years, although it might garner some attention when you aren’t simply playing against the computer generated chess master. Rez however, also 10 dollars or 800 MS points, belongs in a class of its own, one of those cult hit Dreamcast games of yonder makes a return with an HD, but still seizure inducing upgrade. Take a gander at the above video to get a feel for how the game works, and indulge in the pounding techno music while you are at it. Related PostsChessmaster Coming To Xbox LiveOne of the o...

Nintendo Blocked GoldenEye XBLA, Says Microsoft
2008-01-15 06:47:00
Despite an agreement that would allow dual releases of the game and other Rare titles on Wii's Virtual Console and Xbox Live Arcade, Microsoft says Nintendo won't allow the port of GoldenEye on a competitor's system.According to Kotaku, Microsoft officials allege that Nintendo president Satoru Iwata blocked the release of a GoldenEye port on Xbox Live Arcade because the game originated on Nintendo hardware.Microsoft claims Nintendo was unwilling to reach an agreement, this despite a favorable compromise for both companies that included a profit sharing deal. Nintendo owned a minority stake in Rare before Microsoft purchased the developer in 2002.Unconfirmed rumors of a GoldenEye XBLA port surfaced last week, in which multiple sources reported that the game was already in development and less than two months from release before Nintendo purportedly canned the deal.Nintendo was not immediately available for comment.Sports Legends Updates:Sports Legends TV Updates: · Now Has A Much ...

Omega Five and Tron launch to the XBLA this weekFiled under: News, Xbox Live ArcadeWe just received a heads up from the folks over at the Gamerscore Blog telling us that this week we'll be treated to an XBLA twofer. Omega Five will release for 800 Microsoft points and feature pretty 3D graphics, local co-op and crazy amounts of "boom!", "kablam!" and "splat!". Tron on the other hand will release for 400 Microsoft points and feature multiplayer co-op local or over Live (double the grid bug killing fun!) as well as a versus mode too. Not to mention it'll also sport some sexy CD quality audio. What is not off is the fact that the above screenshot was taken from an Xbox Live Arcade game. For an Xbox Live Arcade game (hell, for a 360 game), the screens look amazing. The game in question is Kart Attack from Blimey Games. The game features go-kart racing both on and offline, and that's about all we know about it really. Realistic kart racer coming to XBLA/PSN/PC - SendMeRSS

Realistic kart racer coming to XBLA/PSN/PCFiled under: PC, Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360, Driving, Online Okay, we're a bit confused. We've always assumed that kart racing games were better suited to zany characters, wacky power-ups, and fantastical tracks -- rather than a Gran Turismo sense of realism. Developer Blimey Games, however, seeks to prove us wrong, with their high-definition racer tentatively titled Kart Attack. The name suggests that red shells and banana peels would fit right in, but the work-in-progress screenshots make us doubt that they'll be anything out of the ordinary about the game. Blimey states that Kart Attack is being developed for Xbox Live Arcade, Playstation Network, and Games for Windows Live, and will feature "stunning next generation graphics", and online mutliplayer. We'll keep our fingers crossed for at least some Road Rash-style kart-to-kart attacks. How much fun could realistic virtual kart racing actually be?Read | Permalink..-.

A new expansion for Xbox Arcade favorite Carcassonne turns players into Kings and Barons, provided they do enough building. The King and Robber Baron icons are bonuses handed out to players build the largest city and the longest road. The icon sits next to your gamertag for as long as you hold the title. The player in possession of the King icon at the end of the game gets one extra point for each completed city, while the player with the Baron icon gets one extra point for each completed road. The expansion also includes five new Town construction pieces, giving you a few more building options. Sounds like The King & Baron expansion would be well worth the 300 point price tag.Source: Game|Life Online Games Carcassonne Xbox XBLA expansion King Console+gaming

This week's XBLA title: Sonic The Hedgehog 2
2007-09-10 20:19:00
Available on Xbox LIVE Arcade from 09:00 GMT this Wednesday, is Sonic The Hedgehog 2. This game takes me back, I was on a school-sponsored work experience week at Worthing Computer Centre when the awkwardly-titled "Sonic Twosday" hit. Unbelievably, nearly fifteen years ago - November 24th, 1992. And one of the very first near-simultaneous worldwide console game launches.

It's time for the age old Capcom vs. SNK debate to begin anew, because Fatal Fury Special is now available on Xbox Live Arcade.Alongside the classic fighter is Cyberball 2072 which brings Xbox 360 gamers the palpable mix of robots and football. Ooh, and explosions too, can't forget explosions. Both games are available for the tantalizing price of 400 Microsoft Points. So, now that you've had a taste of both, which is it going to be fanboys, Street Fighter or Fatal Fury? We can tell you right now that there is one thing Fatal Fury has that Street Fighter doesn't: the lovely Mai Shiranui. XBLA gets Puzzle Fighter and Streets of Rage 2
2007-08-29 18:29:00
Today is a somewhat surprising Xbox Live Arcade Wednesday offering up a twofer that we weren't clued in on. One half of the twofer that we fully expected to release today is Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix which is available for 800 Microsoft points and offers lots of multiplayer puzzle fighting fun. We hear it's Puzzle Fighter'licious! The other half of the surprise XBLA twofer is SEGA's Streets of Rage 2 which was super secretly sprung on us as we had no prior knowledge of its release this week. Streets of Rage 2 is available for 400 Microsoft points and allows players to take on the evil Mr. X in two player online co-op. Sorry War World, SEGA is in town this week. Both games are available for download this very moment off of the XBLA and we're hoping that maybe next time Microsoft will be kind enough to clue us in on ALL the game releases before Arcade Wednesday rolls around. We're old grumps who don't like surprises unless they make us filthy rich.Read - Super Puzzl...
Marathon on XBLA - anyone else feel like blowing chunks?
2007-08-02 08:41:00
Has anyone tried Marathon (from everyone’s favourite “5 out of 10 also-ran GOTY studio”, Bungie) yesterday? I thought there was something wrong with the sandwich I’d had for lunch as I was <this> close to hurling it up after playing this for 5 minutes! Motion Sickness is something I have never suffered with FPSs, but this game does something to my head! I think it’s the combination of the slightly twitchy controls, mad colour pallette and pinko commie aliens coming at you that turned my stomach. Odd, but you have been warned! Cue: comments thread full of people telling me to man-up and stop being such a pussy.
XBLA Wednesday- Bungie's Marathon and some board games
2007-07-31 14:29:00
Bungie, the team behind Halo, had another sci fi epic for the Mac. This was Marathon and the 2nd in the trilogy, Marthon: Durandal is coming to Xbox Live this Wednesday. Sadly, the game doesn't look like the above concept art, but more like this:The Xbox live Arcade release will offer 4 player splitscreen and cost you $10. What's real interesting about the Marathon games is that they take place in a universe associated with Master Chief. Are there Halo 3 clues or parallels in Marathon? Is that why it is being released close to Halo 3? Only time will tell.
