Upside's mid-year favorites: 'Perfect stocks?'
2008-07-22 07:00:00
"Our Quadrix rating system grades stocks on nearly 100 variables in six categories — Momentum, Value, Quality, Financial Strength, Earnings Estimates, and Performance," says Richard Moroney (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2198).In- his Upside Stocks (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2198), he says, "Everything we do is designed to find the 'perfect stock,' with a solid track record, bright growth prospects, strong finances, and a discount valuation." Here, he offers some mid-year favorites."Quadrix is our first screen, but we always take a closer look to see if stocks are being scored accurately. Because all rating systems tend to be backward-looking, we also consider company and industry prospects to determine if the bullish story being told by Quadrix is ancient history."Because of strength in energy and infrastructure end markets, EMCOR (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=eme) (NYSE: EME (http://www.thestockadvisors...-.
A Year in the Life--Album Style
2008-07-16 19:14:00
Inspiration comes.  Sometimes it doesn't.  When it doesn't, I have found a nifty little trick is to steal from those in the blogging community.  OK.  stealing is bad.  I'm borrowing, drawing inspiration, building upon the foundations that have been laid before me.  I got this from Mr. Big Dubya who apparently got it from Jason who got it from a website he appreciates.  You see, it's not really theft if the original dudes all get their due credit, right?  Kind of like it ain't plagiarism if I put a footnote.  Anyway, the rules of this little exercise are pretty simple: pick your favorite album (or what would have been your favorite, had you been of age) from every year of your life.  I fudged this just a tad.  Although I would like to think of myself as someone with a very eclectic taste in music (no rap--no country--a guy has to have boundaries), my wife would argue that my tastes are pretty mainstream and ho-hum at b...

Atlanta Citizen of the Year
2008-07-12 10:56:00
I meant to post this a while back -- this cracked me the hell up.The Krog Tunnel's graffiti isn't really harmful and is even something of an attraction -- it's often creative and makes the tunnel interesting instead of dull. The stuff in the surrounding area is occasionally inspired, too.The image of that guy sitting in a tree, waiting for people to come by with spray paint, cheers me to no end.I was gonna walk down to the area and shoot some photos this morning, but it's July and I failed to get up before 8 a.m. So never mind. And, anyway, I shot some photos down there some years back, and (as far as I can tell) I never posted them. (If I did, I can't find them, though since my memory's shot that means nothing.)
Ten Year Foreclosure Record On The Verge Of Breaking
2008-07-08 14:28:00
Donald E. Ashe, the Hampden County Register of Deeds, has said that the mortgage foreclosure is going to break a long 10 year record very soon. He feels that the speed that the problem of foreclosures has taken now is surely going to break the earlier record in a very short span of time. This ...

REXANO, www.REXANO.org  Editorial By Zuzana Kukol PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, is a household name, known more for showing human skin than actually saving any animals. Yemen: 14 Year Old Suicide Bomber Kills 4
2008-07-06 14:23:00
At least four people were killed and six wounded in ?S?ada as a 14-year-old boy detonated an anti-personnel mine that he was carrying outside a government complex, local media reported. This is the first time a child has been used and it remains unclear whether or not he knew he was going to die, sources at the Yemen Times told The Media Line. Saturday's attack came after government forces and local rebels loyal to the Houthi tribe were involved in heavy fighting over the weekend. Sources at the Yemen Times also reported that, for the third day running, the state air force has been targeting areas of combat in ?S'ada. The planes are hovering continually and hitting places where even the government military is present. The soldiers were killed because of either engaging with the Houthis in combat or their proximity to the Houthi camps. Dozens of military soldiers are reported dead because of the air force attacks.SOURCE

It?s The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year
2008-07-03 01:44:00
I know I?m just a wee bit late on this subject, but let me declare that I love summer (which is what this post will be about, at least that?s my intention as I start writing this) or as all the cool kids say, I heart summer. The weather is warm, the sun shines longer, it?s time to swim, the kids are out of school, we get to celebrate the 4th of July, our electricity bills go up and every day in the cubicle brings another reminder that other people are out doing really fun things. I also find that my grass tends to start dying, which requires much less lawn mowing, but not everyone sees that as the plus that I do. And as if things couldn?t get better, on the fake holiday news front, July is Grilling Month, Ice Cream Month and Hot Dog Month. I?m pretty sure that?s called a trifecta and certainly deserving of a separate post. Yes, summer is a lovely time. Now unfortunately I blew my summer vacation already and will now need to work for the remainder of the summer or celebrate one ...

On The 17 Year Old's Death And Six Flags Over Georgia
2008-07-01 16:47:00
In this vlog,I take issue with the idea that the 17 year old kid who passed away after being decapitated by a roller coaster at Six Flags Over Georgia was stupid. The folks at fault were Six Flags Over Georgia and the governments that approved the design of the roller coaster. It's not reasonable to expect a teenager to understand what it means to be accountable; that's when accountability is learned. Six Flag Over Georgia should have anticipated all possible outcomes and designed the roller coaster on that basis.

ABC Gets its End of Year Report Card
2008-06-10 15:11:00
ABC Good Moves: By agreeing to a specific 48 episode end date, ABC gave LOSTerminds Lindeloff and Cuse the finality they needed to deliver the best season of LOST to date. The alphabet network also scores points for showing surprising patience [and good taste] by renewing freshman fan favorites PUSHING DAISIES, DIRTY SEXY MONEY and ELI STONE. Not to mentions this TV Addict’s eternal gratitude for renewing SCRUBS for what will hopefully be one helluva final send off. Bad Moves: The same can’t be said for the Judy Greer vehicle MISS/GUIDED, which unfortunately has the distinction of joining this TV Addict’s ever expanding shelf of brilliant-but-cancelled TV series. PRIVATE PRACTICE was sadly no GREY’S ANATOMY. While DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES five year fast forward could either be the best thing to happen to Wisteria Lane since the arrival of Dana Delany, or the biggest shark jump since Cousin Oliver. Stay Tuned. Prognosis for the Coming Season: Thanks to a resurgent...

Long Island Closing Prices Plunge 10%, Queens 15% Year Over Year
2008-06-10 00:13:00
LI May home prices fall 10% over '07; Queens down 15%by NY Newsday - fullLast month's median closing prices of homes on Long Island dropped by about 10 percent -- 15 percent in Queens -- compared to a year ago. And when compared to April, the figures reveal an erratic housing market some real estate agents say is still correcting from the boom years and feeling the impact of the subprime mortgage crisis. The Multiple Listing Service of Long Island, which also includes Queens, reported that the median closing price was $360,000 in Suffolk, down from $400,000 a year ago. In Nassau the median price dropped $51,500 to $438,500 over the same period, and in Queens the price dropped to $407,500 from $480,000.The declines show the effects of fewer sales coupled with increased inventory, according to MLS chief executive Joseph E. Mottola."Market uncertainty continues as homeowners under increasing pressures of gas prices, tax increases and the upward adjustments in variable rate mortgages t...

Uk Troops to be out of Iraq by end of year - ish.
2008-06-09 23:03:00
The BBC reports:The final withdrawal of British troops from Iraq could be announced by the end of the year.So what are they saying? Well, they are not saying it will be announced, only that it could. And even then they are saying that the announcement could be made by the end of the year - NOT that troops could be withdrawn by the end of the year. The government could announce that troops will be withdrawn in five years time - by the end of the year. I've got to ask - are the government paying the BBC to come out with this crap to try and save Gordon Brown's neck? Also in the news:Moon monkeys could fly out of my arse by the end of the year.My pear tree could produce solid gold pears by the end of the year.Gordon Brown could make a decision by the end of the year.Guido Fawkes could link to me by the end of the year.Nick Clegg could explain his position on the Lisbon Treaty by the end of the year.UPDATE: Guido has linked to me - I guess the BBC could be right after all. Cheers Guido!

Weight loss and the cycle of the year
2008-06-09 13:33:00
There seems to be two times a year that the human masses want to lose weight, first of the year and Spring/Summer time.  The first of the year is a mental thing with carbon based life forms. You start an exercise program and go on a diet to lose weight, most not all get bored with it after a while. When the Spring/Summer time comes around it is all about dieting  for vanity sake to be able to fit in your old swim suit, without having to buy a larger suit for the summer.  The cycle seems to continue each year.  I wish, once the weight is off it would nice if it stayed off. I can dream. If this makes the human race happy then so be it.  I got lucky and my swim shorts still fit this year.Cheers

From Humph: this year's quotation.
2008-06-08 07:31:00
A wonderful final quotation from Humphrey LyttletonOne of the radio programmes which was mentioned in the questions and discussion after my talk at Locks Heath Rotary was I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue, a show which had been hosted by the hugely popular jazz musician, radio presenter (and after dinner speaker) Humphrey Lyttleton until his death at the age of 86 a few days earlier. In an article in the Observer, ISIHAC panellist Barry Cryer spoke about Humph and mentioned a fantastic saying which he'd come out with before going into hospital, one of those quotations which should go straight into the commonplace books which I hope you have all been keeping since I mentioned how essential they are for public speakers!Humphrey Lyttleton said:"If all goes well, this year's drama is next year's anecdote".Sadly, all didn't go well but what a great saying, what a great philosophy - and what a great piece of advice for any speaker!I doubt whether I will hear many better quotations this year...

It's duan wu jie or dragon boat festival again and if my memory serves me right, this time last year we were in Ningbo and planning to stay there for a while. So a year has passed since the time we had packed up our bags and relocated. Many things have happened since then and of course the most significant is the birth of Micah :)All in all we had a wonderful experience living in Ningbo coupled with the traveling within China and also back and forth Malaysia plus a trip to Australia as well. In all that time we've met new friends as well as old.We are nomads since we've sold our house in Malaysia and haven't yet settled down anywhere. For the moment I am in Kuala Lumpur while David shuttles between here and Ningbo for work. When Micah is about 3 months old, I think we will join David in Ningbo where I guess, we'll be experiencing another year in China with new challenges.
