Final Year Project: Cryogenic Treatment Of ‘M2′ High Speed Tool
2009-09-22 18:46:00 The project proposes a treatment process for the M2 High Speed Tool Steel. This is purely for educational purpose: Abstract After the conventional heat treatment to the M2 steel, there remains large amount of retained austenite (~30%) which is in soft phase and is not desirable to have better mechanical properties. But with the application of cryogenic treatment after conventional hardening, this retained austenite is minimized to approximately zero percent. This retained austenite is converted into martensite and tertiary carbides. Thus cryogenically treated M2 high speed tool steel shows microstructural changes, increase in wear resistance but no significant change in hardness than conventionally treated M2 steel that can influence tool lives and productivity significantly. This work aims to verify the effect of cryogenic treatment on M2 high speed tool steel, using wear test. An experimental plan [load:- 5.5 kgs] was employed for both cryotreated and noncryotreated in order to co...

Friday Five: The Year?s Best Bird Songs
2009-09-18 14:24:00 Birds are creepy, as anyone who’s seen a certain Hitchcock film knows. But from the great speckled bird to Dolly Parton’s little sparrow, these hollow-boned, beady-eyed creatures are something of a country music fixture. Let’s give a listen to some of 2009’s bird songs. 5. “Basket of Singing Birds” – Missy Raines & The New Hip Jazzy ...
Book Review: The Year Of The Flood by Margaret Atwood
2009-09-17 16:02:00 Science fiction — excuse me, speculative fiction — loves series. For whatever reason, readers — and evidently authors — can’t get enough of particular worlds or characters. And just as Margaret Atwood distances her fiction from science fiction, she may be taking the concept of a series in a different direction. Atwood’s latest novel, The Year ...

Want a Ubertor Website for a Year? For a DOLLAR?
2009-09-16 01:43:00 Thanks to the folks at Ubertor, a terrific real estate web site provider, not one, not two, but THREE lucky readers of Phoenix Real Estate Guy will get a complete Ubertor Premium site for a year for the ridiculous price of one dollar. That’s no typo. Win a website for a year for a buck. Here’s how the Ubertor Site for a Buck contest works: 1) Shoot a video explaining “Why I need (deserve, want or desire) an Ubertor web site”. You don’t need any fancy pants video equipment. A Flip cam, a digital camera with video capability, whatever. Just shoot a short (less than two minutes) video showing why you need a cutting edge real estate web site from Ubertor. 2) Post a link to the video in the comments here, or post it on your blog and link back here. Either way will work. 3) Judges will pick three winners based on creativity, need, and the complete random whims of the judges. We’ll come to a consensus some way and announce the winners. 4) If currently have, or ever had, an Ub...

Phoenix Rental Prices Dropped 15% In The Past Year
2009-09-09 09:01:00 Rental prices are low in the Phoenix area- and are headed lower: Rent prices are likely to fall significantly in the coming months as a growing number of commercial real-estate investors buy up struggling apartment communities, according to some local real-estate analysts. The same phenomenon that has driven down home-sale prices appears to be occurring in the apartment market, they said, with cash buyers lowering prices as much as is necessary to attract paying customers. As a result, average rent prices have dropped an estimated 15 percent or more in the past year, and they could fall another 15 percent in the coming year, one local analyst said. Because cash investors don’t have a loan to repay, there really is no bottom line at which to hold their rent prices, said Jim Kasten, a Phoenix real-estate analyst and investor. The problem for apartment owners who do have mortgages is that they’ll have to lower their rent prices, too, if they hope to remain competitive,...

The 9th Day of the 9th Month (September) of the 9th Year (2009) Millennium
2009-09-09 07:02:00 The ?99999? Lights out Campaign appeals to people to voluntarily switch off their lights for 9 minutes at 9 pm on the 9th day of the 9th month (September) of the 9th year (2009) of this millennium. Promoted by Exnora International, the 99999 Lights Out is not merely for saving power for 9 minutes, but it is essentially to rejoice in the success realized during the period, by cutting down your carbon foot print. Earlier the same organization has promoted the ?88888? campaign which encouraged people to switch off electric lights for ?8? minutes at ?8? pm on day ?8? of the month ?8? (August) of the year ?8? (2008) of this Millennium. This drive is rather good for us who are living under the threat of load shedding. We have been experiencing long hours of black out in the hot summer. It is likely to start again after Ramadan. Join in and support the cause and help fight against Global Warming as well as better electric distribution in the country. Every bit helps.

new school year, new classmates
2009-09-09 02:12:00 It’s time for school (can I hear an “amen,” moms?) which usually means entering a new setting with a new classroom, new teacher, and new classmates. At first, others might seem lazy. Or perhaps their insecurities manifest as a tad Napoleon complex-like. But given a little getting-to-know-you time… and a some relaxed, one-on-one time… you just might get close… and find his crooked ears don’t bug you nearly so much anymore. Chicagoland mother of the year
2009-09-04 05:09:00 Yes, I know there are plenty of candidates to choose from here in the Chicagoland area, but right now Deborah K. Rohrwasser of Geneva, Illinois is my front runner.Ms. Rohrwasser was arrested and charged with phoning in a bomb threat to the Kane County Court Services office on July 31st. The threat was phoned in to the probation office. Kane County authorities declined to discuss a motive for the crime. The article did mention that her son is currently on probation, reporting to that office.I wish her timing had been better. This would have made an excellent Mother's Day human interest story. Mother bear defends her felonious cub......
New movies: The best, and one of the worst, comedies of the year
2009-09-03 17:22:00 Do not do not do not do not see "All About Steve," a terrible, stupid and offensive comedy that does no favors for Sandra Bullock or Bradley Cooper. However, while my colleague Geoff Berkshire wasn't as hot on it, I say that "Extract" is funnier than any movie this year, with a rhythm that's both laid-back and exhilarating, delivering big laughs throughout the entire film. My quick take is below. Read it and let me know what you think of this week's comedies!'Extract'****1/2 (out of five)The year's funniest movie by about 100 laughs, writer-director Mike Judge's "Extract" runs huge, hilarious circles around "Office Space." Jason Bateman stars as extract plant owner Joel, who, frustrated by his sexless marriage, hires someone...
Fighting and fussing remains in fashion year-round in the NHL
2009-09-02 22:36:00 Fighting has not gone out of fashion in the NHL. To the contrary, there are nothing but clenched fists, bad blood and haymakers flying all around the place.Although it's still technically summer as Labor Day looms, nothing gets you more prepared for another NHL season than some reckless head-butting and unquenchable hatred. Some Canadian regions haven't been this close to firing on the U. S. since the war of 1812 when the British Empire was in charge and still smoking about that road loss to America in the Revolutionary War.Read the comment sections of fans about the NHL opposing a move to Hamilton, Ontario, and there are charges in Canada that the league is trying to keep hockey strictly in the...

Google Chrome Completes One Year. Gets Sony PCs as Birthday Gift!
2009-09-02 11:01:00 It is now exactly one year since Google introduced their new browser Chrome. All along, they had patronized one of the best open source browsers in the world, Firefox and helped it become the second most popular browser after the mighty Internet Explorer. When Chrome was introduced, people wondered if Firefox was going to suffer. Retrospectively, nothing much has changed since then. In the one year that Google Chrome has existed, it has grown from 0% to 2.59% market share; nothing remarkable given that Google has access to almost every internet user on the planet in one way or the other. Google’s leadership in all things on the internet has clearly not helped in this case. Quite expectedly, Google is making more aggressive moves now, and is emulating the strategy Microsoft took to beat Netscape in the late 1990s in the browser wars. As a first step, Google has confirmed the speculation that Sony has agreed to make Google Chrome the default browser in all their computer shipme...

Another reported 12-year contract muddies the NHL ice
2009-09-01 21:48:00 Comforting to us old folk to see that some things never change, such as the constantly careening National Hockey League. This lurching, swerving, myopic monster wields the same amount of potent power as a castrated bull and always has as it bounces off various fences in search of breaking loose and running free. It's a collection of too many self-centered, self-determining and sometimes self-destructive owners who answer to no one for their actions, least of all commissioner Gary Bettman, who's been riding nothing more than a hobby horse from Day 1 and has the imitation saddle sores to show for it.Bill Wirtz would be happy to see nothing has really changed since his departure. Wirtz once had John Ziegler tucked neatly...

The Bears-Denver game did a 7.3 overnight rating, making it the most-watched preseason game for any network in five years; 1 ratings point is the equivalent of more than 1 million households. Ed Sherman's Business of Sports blog says the Bears also scored in a big way in Chicago. The game did a 22.6 rating and 36 share; 1 local ratings point is worth more than 35,000 homes and share is the percentage of televisions tuned to the telecast....

Happy Birthday, Switzerland (like every year)
2009-08-01 01:30:00 Today August 1, my dear Switzerland, is your birthday. You were born in the year 1291. After the defeating of the terrible Austrians. Three guys conceived you. You grew, over the centuries from a 3 state country to a 26 state one. And over all those years, you have become a stout lady called "Helvetia".We are all proud of you. Even if some of us think (and truthfully, not so much anymore) that you are a bit "uptight". This might perhaps have been because we are landlocked. With big parts of the country surrounded by high mountains. They prevented us for a long time to get out to the big world and, perhaps, made that we were (are) a bit narrow minded. But things have changed and are changing. You have opened yourself to the world. Because today it is easy to travel in the world and many of us are doing so, either for work or for vacation. And this has opened your mind, bit by bit over the years.Sometimes you are selling yourself not very well. And that is why many people still believe...
