11 years
2009-10-16 22:44:00 This weekend marks the 11th anniversary of my Mother's death. She was a gentle soul with a will of iron, and she passed over in a gentle way- in her sleep. Her family was her life, and her life was a good one. I left Detroit when I was 28, and so my life was not as intertwined as my siblings. I think they struggle more often than I, since they live in the setting that she inhabited. My great grief has given way to just missing her, and an appreciation for her many gifts. When I was in Detroit for my brother's surgery, I stayed at my sister, Marie's house. This is the house I grew up in....
Obama Worldview Unchanged Since His College Years?
2009-09-23 18:07:00 In his latest post at the Washington Examiner, Michael Barone wonders if the President still shares the prevailing attitude in the 1980s of the smart set in the United States that dictatorships thrived in Latin America because they and their corporate backers were “all propped up by the United States.” That wold certainly help explain ...

At War with Iran for Thirty Years | History News Network
2009-09-22 05:57:00 From the earliest days of Iran?s Islamic Revolution, its leaders were determined to acquire nuclear weapons and the missiles with which to deliver them. It is criminally stupid, if not insane, to believe that Iran ...

Where Was Nancy Pelosi These Past Eight Years?
2009-09-18 03:00:00 So, now, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi laments the coarsening of our political discourse. Guess she wasn’t listening when her fellow House Democrats booed President George W. Bush when he delivered the constitutionally-sanctioned State of the Union address in 2005. (H/t Riehl World Review*) Did Mrs. Pelosi ever lament the decline of civility when her political allies and ...

Give Perpetual Pedro the years...
2009-09-17 01:41:00 Pedro Feliciano was a classic late blooming lefty, even though he's 33 y/o his arm has very little mileage. His first exposure to AAA was in 2000 with the Dodgers and from then until 2004 he only appeared in 280 minor league innings ( overall he only has 180 innings in AAA).In 2004 at the age of 27 y/o he was in Norfolk with a 5.30 ERA in 32 appearances, with his career going nowhere he was allowed to play in Japan. While playing with the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks in 2005 Pedro posted a solid 3.89 ERA in 37 appearances. When he returned the pitching coach was Rick Peterson who changed his arm angle, between the 3/4 arm angle and his international experience he became a very effective left handed reliever.Over the last four seasons Pedro has been one of the most effective and consistent relievers in the league, posting an ERA of 3.09 in 202 innings. Sure he's been used a lot over the last four years, but he has shown no signs of injury and was used very little in the minors. It's being r...

Berlin: The fall of the wall, 20 years later
2009-09-15 17:19:00 A stretch of the wall at the East Side Gallery. Photo by Franz Patzig. By Susan Buzzelli in Berlin— On November 9, thousands of Berliners, visitors, and VIPs, including Kofi Annan and Mikhail Gorbachev, will gather at the base of the Brandenburg Gate to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. But you don’t have to wait until the action-packed Fest der Freiheit (Festival of Freedom) to pay tribute to Germany’s division into East and West between 1961 and 1989. Dozens of exhibits, concerts, tours, readings, and more related to life and times on both sides of the Mauer are dominating the Berlin’s cultural calendar this fall. Seeing Red Information about Wall-related happenings isn’t hard to gather. Painted a jarring shade of tomato red, the Infotreppe (Info stairs, Washingtonplatz, U- and S-bahn: Hauptbahnhof), a staircase parked in front of the Hauptbahnhof (central train station), offers a multimedia exhibit and tips about how to celebrate the Wall d...

20 Million Broadband Users Will Take 5 Years While Govt Approves Broadband
2009-09-15 08:04:00 The Broadband Policy of 2004 stated that India would achieve 20 million broadband users by 2010. Now we are at the end of 2009 (almost) and the TRAI latest numbers suggest that broadband penetration in India has just about managed to reach 6.8 million subscribers! At this rate the target of 20 million broadband subscribers would be reached by 2014 so said Mr Manoj Kohli,Chairman, CII National Committee on Telecom and Broadband and CEO and Joint Managing Director of Bharti AirTel Ltd. Inspite of this slow growth the CII is aiming for 214 million connections by 2014 i.e. in the next 5 years. A tall ask if you ask us. The wire line infrastructure in India is certainly not equipped to provide this growth. What may give it the impetus is the upcoming wimax auctions which may lead to India being connected via Wimax. We have reported earlier on how 20% of the worlds wimax internet connections might be in India by 2012 and that could be the way broadband penetration could grow. There are a...

Reverse Mortgage To Foreclosure In Less Than Three Years
2009-09-11 17:34:00 Anyone who’s ever watched any late night television has seen those commercials for reverse mortgage. They are always touted by older celebrities claiming how safe these things are. For those who actually believe that there’s little risk to a reverse mortgage, here’s a cautionary tale from our faithful longtime correspondent in Tucson- M.R.: Recently I passed a vacant house with a NOTS posted on the front fence. I know the owner of this property — she’s an elderly lady who took out a reverse mortgage in 2006. The NOTS gave the amount, $285,500. Twist, in no way, even during the height of the bubble, was that place ever worth that much. Very few places in zip code 85705 are. Furthermore, the lady was known for feeding every stray cat in the area, and for allowing them into her house. You can just imagine what the place smelled like. After she got the reverse mortgage, she went on a truly baffling spending spree. We’re talking things lik...

September 11: Eighteen years ago
2009-09-11 17:24:00 As I type this memorial services are happening in New York City, Washington, D.C. and Shanksville, PA and the names of almost 3,000 people murdered on September 11, 2001 are scrolling across the TV screen on Fox News. Eight years ago today, our lives changed. Everyone remembers where they were and what they were thinking on that day. Eighteen years ago today, On September 11, 1991, my son James was born. Talk about a life changing moment! I’ll never forget witnessing the birth of my son, looking down at this beautiful baby and feeling overwhelmed with love while thinking, “Oh dear God. What do I do now?” Today he is legally** an adult, and I love him even more than I did eighteen years ago. I’m so proud of the man he’s become. We’ve had some great times, we’ve had some tough times. I think I did some things right as a parent, and I know I did more things wrong. But the kid turned out to be one hell of a human being, and I’m proud to call him my friend and my son. &nb...

September 11, 8 years later
2009-09-11 14:46:00 8 years is a long time, but sometimes it seems like last week.My family was getting ready to leave for a canoe trip in Wisconsin that morning. The car was packed, my bride was writing out instructions for the dog walker, and my girls were getting their boots on in the living room while the TV played in the background. "Hey dad, an airplane just crashed into the World Trade Center". Craig Allen/Getty ImagesWe've talked about this a number of times since then, and we all agree that we were lucky to spend the next 3 days in the middle of nowhere, away from any television or radio. We were spared all those repeated images of people jumping and buildings...

Seven dividend elites: 100 years of payouts
2009-09-04 14:00:00 "While firms have cut dividends at an historic pace over the last 24 months, the fact is that there are still quality companies with long payout histories that represent good long-term investments," says Chuck Carlson. In his top-notch The DRIP Investor he says, "The 7 stocks featured here have each been paying a dividend for over 100 years, have raised dividends annually for at least the last quarter centurt and offer direct-purchase plans.""Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO) has a strong position among this group of dividend elites. The company has paid a dividend continuously since 1893. The firm has lifted its dividend annually for the last 47 years."The firm will continue to face challenges in some of its beverage markets. A Tribute to READING RAINBOW Which Was Cancelled After 26 Years
2009-08-31 23:50:00 Butterfly in the sky, I can go twice as high,Take a look, it's in a book — Reading Rainbow ...File this under "What are you blogging about now that nobody cares about"?Reading Rainbow will not be seen on PBS after a 26 year run. The show started way back in 1983. Sure, you might think who the hell cares. Well appparently, a lot of kids who are all grown up now loved that show and Levar Burton and the kids.As evidenced by all these YouTubers putting out their own version of the Reading Rainbow song, I'm convinced millions upon millions of kids loved that show and probably some parents too. It's O.K. grown-ups you can say it. You watched it with your kids and were a fan. Levar, the grown-up made it seem that way at least. There seems to be some contraversy over this article on the NPR website as to why the show was cancelled.Apparently NPR blamed it on the Bush administration. The commenters are writing in to say PBS has been showing re-runs since 2006 and they were asking for...

Don't worry, be happy, Hossa's got 12 years to heal
2009-07-23 19:08:00 I see where some people aren't worried a bit to hear that Marian Hossa has a right rotator cuff tear. There have been yawns all around at how underwhelming it is. He should heal well before the 12-year contract runs out, they say with a sniff at my ignorance and my knee-jerk skepticism. It's already been 48 years between Blackhawks championships. What's the hurry? He'll be fine after a minor setback that the miracle of modern medicine can easily repair, even perhaps through the no-muss, no-fuss alternative of rehab, which means that the tear has gone into hiding for the present time. It could always return when least expected, like an IRS audit. We can even prescribe some medical...
