SAN'A Yemen persecution of Christian converts
2008-08-21 17:57:00 Fon News says,'SAN'A, Yemen ? Yemeni police have detained at least nine people this year for converting from Islam to Christianity, a security official said Tuesday. The nine were arrested between May and early August and remain in police custody, said the official.Converting from Islam to any other religion is illegal in Yemen and can be punishable by death. But in previous cases, those arrested are usually released after they revoke their new faith and pledge to return to Islam.Three of the nine were detained in west of the capital, San'a, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media. He declined to provide details about the others.A family member of one of the detained said he fears those arrested could face torture or abuse in prison. The Saudhouse
2008-07-09 07:55:00 Updated July 12:Are the Saudis behind Muslim terror most everywhere, or does it just seem like it?After all, 80% of Al Qaeda were Saudis several years ago. What's the figure now? We know that Zarqawi's Iraqi Al Qaeda was full of men from the Gulf, not necessarily Saudi Arabia, but Arabia nonetheless. Fallujah was full of these guys in 2004 during the two horrible US invasions of the town. And support for Al Qaeda is high in the Kingdom. A good 50% of the population supported bin Laden a few years back. The Al Qaeda unit inside Saudi Arabia, Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, had vast support and was able to penetrate into the deepest recesses of the Saudi security forces during its operations. This is how it raided embassies. There were also times during the worst of the AQAP operations that the Saudi security forces just let AQAP escape from their very hands. This was due to huge support for AQAP inside the Saudi security forces themselves. What's happened since? With the death of...

Yemen: 14 Year Old Suicide Bomber Kills 4
2008-07-06 14:23:00 At least four people were killed and six wounded in ?S?ada as a 14-year-old boy detonated an anti-personnel mine that he was carrying outside a government complex, local media reported. This is the first time a child has been used and it remains unclear whether or not he knew he was going to die, sources at the Yemen Times told The Media Line. Saturday's attack came after government forces and local rebels loyal to the Houthi tribe were involved in heavy fighting over the weekend. Sources at the Yemen Times also reported that, for the third day running, the state air force has been targeting areas of combat in ?S'ada. The planes are hovering continually and hitting places where even the government military is present. The soldiers were killed because of either engaging with the Houthis in combat or their proximity to the Houthi camps. Dozens of military soldiers are reported dead because of the air force attacks.SOURCE
Dinosaur Footprints Found in Yemen
2008-05-22 01:14:00 For the first time, dinosaur footprints have been found on the Arabian Peninsula. In ancient coastal mudflats in Yemen, fossils reveal that a herd of 11 gigantic dinosaurs ? sauropods, the largest animals that ever walked on land ? tramped deep tracks into the earth that have lasted roughly 150 million years.Altogether, these new tracks help shed the most light to date on the mysterious history of dinosaurs in the Arabian Peninsula. Only a few dinosaur fossils have been reported so far from the Arabian Peninsula ? isolated bones from the Sultanate of Oman and possible fragments of a sauropod from the Republic of Yemen."No dinosaur trackways had been found in this area previously. It's really a blank spot on the map," Schulp said.viaRelated Post: China: 100,000 Year Old Human Skull Found

Al-Qaeda ready to take over regime in Yemen if collapses
2008-05-14 19:59:00 Yemen Online - A source close to Al-Qaeda said that Yemen’s al-Qaeda is closely monitoring the ongoing situations in Yemen and how this may lead to many repercussions including insecurity, monarchy and even collapsing of the current regime so that Mujaheeddin can take over. The source who talked over the phone said that there are plans and arrangements underway by Yemen’s al-Qaeda however; refused to give further details. The source indicated that the recent attacks that targeted U.S. and Italian embassies as well as other western interests in Sana’a were carried out by al-Qaeda. He denied that those attacks were a failure. “The attacks did not fail and they were messages meant to be sent to different parties and they were already delivered,” said the source.Via Counterterrorism

2008-05-14 12:00:00 My Cotillion sister, Jane Novak, blogs passionately about the corruption of the Yemeni government at her blog, the Armies of Liberation. She is also a contributor at the Jawa Report. As we all know, the government of Yemen has little or no regard for human rights, democratic principles, and freedom for their people. They actively suppress journalists who seek to uncover and promote truth.

Yemen: Discontent challenges government
2008-04-23 07:14:00 While calls for secession have been heard, a primary force driving recurrent waves of disturbances in the south and elsewhere in recent months appears to be the poor economic management of Saleh's General People's Congress (GPC) and discontent at its untrammeled domination of the governance system. Public sector and military employment is a fulcrum for southern protests because the security services constitute the largest single employer in a country in which up to 40 percent of the population live in poverty and unemployment stands at anywhere between 20-40 percent. The analyst who requested anonymity explained that, "What is sparking them [the protests] is part of a much larger grievance against the regime. And what you are starting to see now is an increasingly common narrative between what is going on in the south and what's going on in the north [al-Houthi rebellion]. "At their heart, these demonstrations are about the inability of the government to provide bas...

Violence In Yemen Schools
2008-04-22 09:46:00 Yemen is among the nations of the world in which beating of children is still very common. It is used as an educational strategy both of discipline and in teaching. Primary school teacher Ammar Abdullah Naser insists beating children depends on the personality of the child. He says the issue of beating children should be an option for teacher and there are some criteria that rely on the person’s state of condition. “Although beating is a bad principle in educating students, we still use it.” It is unclear whether he referred to the state of mind of the teacher or the student. A study in Yemen asked children their reaction to being beaten. More than half expressed the wish to be understood and supported instead of being hit. They want to be respected as individuals. “I don’t like t be cornered before my fellow clalssmates and be criticized and blamed publicly by teachers” said one twelve year old. Many of the children who were surveyed admitted b...

The famous Russian neo-Nazi video is on this blog here.Updated February 19, 2008:The following tribute to George Habash, leader of the Palestinian Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) was delivered to a meeting organized by the CPGB-ML in Central London on Saturday 10 February 2008. The Communist Party Great Britain Marxist-Leninist, basically a hardline pro-Stalin group, last time I checked. This document is interesting for various reasons. For one, it shows that hardline Communist rhetoric in the style of the former USSR is still popular. The PFLP are lauded for being a hardline Marxist-Leninist organization. It's hard to say whether they still are or not, as they seem to be downplaying this in recent years, and no one really knows what Communism even means anymore. It is true that there was a Communist state in South Yemen, but I am not sure if they accomplished much down there.O...

Archaeologists discover ancient queen’s tomb in Yemen
2008-01-21 10:43:00 Archaeologists have discovered three ancient tombs in the city of Ibb in Yemen, with one believed to belong to a queen from the Hemiriate dynasty. According to a report in Yemen Observer, an archaeological team from Ibb made the discovery in a rocky room, around five meters deep and about 3 meters wide, located in the al-Usaibyah area of the al-Sadda district of Ibb. The room contained large pieces of alabaster, each piece around 150 cubic centimeters. The room also contained a 20 centimeter bronze belt. “The discovery in al-Ausaibyah came about after two tribes began fighting about the discovery the tombs. When local authorities intervened to resolve the conflict between the two tribes, they discovered the tomb,” said Dr. Abdullah Ba-Wazir, head of the General Authority of Antiquities and Museums. Information obtained from local sources suggests that one of the tombs might belong to a woman of royal legacy – maybe a ...

Mister Irrelevant says Hedley Lamarr, to which I say well played, sir. Steinberg has Hitler from teammate Nate Burleson: "I could see that," wide receiver Nate Burleson said of the Hitler reference. "That shows Matt's in a good mood and knows how to keep everybody loose, and at the same time go out there and be a professional on the field." Too loose, perhaps. "The mustache hit me like high beams," Burleson said. "I was eating, and it almost like came up a little bit. "I told him, 'Matt, come on, I'm eating. Let me finish my meal before we make any more eye contact with the mustache.' " When I was in college there was a station that would just cycle sex offenders that I used to watch when drunk....
