Guthrie Govan: Guitar Player interview
2011-08-10 23:43:00
From Drop Box What pops into your head if I ask you what the top two or three most inspiring live guitar performances are that you?ve ever witnessed? Without even thinking, I would say the most recent one was Derek Trucks. Before hearing Derek, I didn?t know a guitar could sound so vocal. With him, the guitar becomes this transparent thing, and through it we hear this great gospel singer that Derek hears in his head. Presumably, Derek can?t sing like that, but he?s made it so his guitar can. Then there was that mythical Eric Johnson show at the Marquee Club in London in the early ?90s that quite a few of us remember. I?m not much for lists, but if I had to list my top ten favorite live guitar sounds of all time, four of them were probably at that gig. Eric was just so in control of his gear and the notes he was playing. I can also mention that seeing Yngwie Malmsteen made a real impact on me. He wasn?t this academic looking guy just standing there with his music stand. He was go...

Yngwie Malmsteen: In The Dead Of Night - LIVE
2011-08-01 12:58:00
There is a story that goes along the lines of Jens Johansson was playing Presto Vivace and Reprise from the UK album in a local music store during an American tour... then in pops Shawn Lane and the two duet on the track... only for Yngwie to see this happening and not be very happy with Jens for the rest of the tour... anyone care to corroborate that? Anyway, who cares... I think it just shows what great taste Yngwie had covering one of the best progressive albums of the late 1970's, and in my opinion's one of the pest progressive albums of all time. UK - UK, featuring the stunning guitar work of Allan Holdsworth and keyboards of Eddie Jobson and the brilliant drums of Bill Bruford and the vocals of John Wetton. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UK-_(band) In this live video it features Mark Boals (in my opinion Yngwie's best singer) . I would love Yngwie to take a more progressive approach to his playing as his legato playing is just awesome. Yngwie Malmsteen - In The Dead Of ...
Joe Stump,Yngwie Malmsteen: skip fight! November 1998
2011-07-31 15:48:00
First published back in November 1998... triggering a few responses... as we know... only time will tell in the pantheon of guitarists who will win this ultimate skip fight! I notice that you've mentioned quite a few guitar players already, but no Yngwie Malmsteen yet. In general, people seem to think of you as an Yngwie Malmsteen kind of guitar player rather than anything else. Joe: Well, I mean I'm influenced by the same guys as Yngwie is. Yngwie is definitely a major influence on my playing. One of the main reasons is that I'm one of the few people who has more or at least as much technique as he has. So, you know, I'm actually more influenced by Ritchie Blackmore and Gary Moore than Yngwie. And of course I also got influenced by Paganini and Bach, you know, that Yngwie plays stuff right out of their pieces of all over the place. So the scalloped Strats are more a Blackmore influence then? Joe: Well, I mean scalloped Strats, I mean I love Ritchie Blackmore and I love Yngw...

GL0RY - Vodka and ice The Goran Edman The Interview: You also sung with Yngwie J Malmsteen, a wonderful guitarist possibly one of the most legendary people for changing personnel around. What happened with you and Yngwie after Fire & Ice? It is the same old story. I did not receive any publishing money ore statements and became very suspicious about it. I consulted a layer in the Swedish Music association where I am a member, and he became very interested in the case. It took us 5 years before we received the money from Yngwie's private publishing company. There is justice after all. Not much chance of the two of you working together again in the future? He called me about the Inspiration album and wanted me to sing a couple of tracks. After considerations I felt that I did not want to be a part of the Yngwie Malmsteen gallery so I turned the offer down. I have nothing against Yngwie and I agree that he is an outstanding guitar player. I wish him all the best but I will never wo...

KIM: Being a virtuoso comes with it's own rewards and pitfalls, one being the misunderstood artist aspect...what is it that people often misunderstand about you or your music? YM: Oh wow, it would be easier for me to list the things that people didn't misunderstand. I don't think people understand me at all. People have said that I was into magic, living in a dark castle somewhere ...I mean even when I did Overture 1383 on the Marching Out album, people were wondering what the significance of the year was and it was when Lowenbrau started brewing their beer, which I was drinking a lot of...that's where I was then. I think people have a certain idea of what I am doing and a lot of times I think people think that everything I do is figured out, none of it is--it's all improvised. I'm perfectly aware of music theory and all; I have a PHD in that, but once you have that you don't think about it...it's like spelling. The hardest thing for me has been to try and capture the live ...

Yngwie Malmsteen: interviewed by Brian Rademacher at Rockeyez
2010-12-23 20:22:00
Brian Rademacher: What do you feel your biggest accomplishment in music is? Yngwie Malmsteen: The most rewarding thing is I?ve never compromised and I?ve done everything from the heart. I wanted to play honest music and a result of that I?ve influenced a lot of people. Growing up in Sweden as a kid they said I wouldn?t make it because I was playing off the beaten path so do speak, I was playing too crazy and too loud and too fucking fast. My music would never be commercial and I said this is what I do take it or leave it. I did everything blood, sweat and tears from the heart and didn?t do things to get on the radio and yeah back in the eighties I wrote a couple more slick tunes, I guess that was a small compromise. I am also happy with the longevity I?m very happy and blessed with that. Brian Rademacher: How do you feel when a young kid guitarist comes up to you and asks for your autograph? Yngwie Malmsteen: It?s great and awesome. It?s happens so much these days I think cause t...

Yngwie Malmsteen: Jeff Scott Soto discusses life with Yngwie
2010-12-01 22:17:00
Metal Shrine: Working with Yngwie and those two albums, what do you remember from? you didn't audition, do you remember what songs you played or did you just jam? Jeff Scott Soto: I remember it like it was yesterday. I met Yngwie and I basically got the call? I was surprised I got the call because they didn't expect the demos that I sent them. I was 16 years old when I sang it and I didn't even expect that I would get listened to and when I found out later, that out of the box of tapes that they brought to Yngwie, only two were taken out and played for him. The first one that they played him was the absolute worst one that was in the box and the second one they played him was my tape. Everything else they didn't bother with. That is amazing to me, that they got this 18-year-old kid who was 16 on the demo and that was good enough to play for Yngwie at that point in time compared to everything else that was sent to him. I went down to the studio to meet him and he was working on ...

2010-11-23 00:05:00
Now, let's go back to you past: you had a terrible car accident, hadn't you? Oh yeah, very long ago. Around 24 years ago. It was terrible. It taught me never to drink and drive together. I suppose that changed your life. It didn't really changed then, it changed in these last years. I quit smoking and drinking six years ago. I just love to jump on my Ferrari, I collect them, I've four Ferrari now and I'm very happy. I have the sunshine here ... And I stay in my studio playing guitar to wait for something to happen, if I get inspired. It's so much better now, because I had many distractions then, like booze or shit like that. I don't like these things anymore, now I feel happier and I'm more focused and smarter. And what about your life as a musician? Has it changed? (coughs) Yes and no. Like I said before, I'm more focused now than before. Before I was less accurate in recording; now I'm sharp and also pay more attention to precision. more

Yngwie Malmsteen: invisible oranges interview

If people who know nothing about classical music hear your records and want to get into classical music, what three compositions should they listen to? Vivaldi ? Four Seasons. Johann Sebastian Bach ? Brandenburg Concertos. Niccolò Paganini?s 24 Caprices. On your album, on the song ?Shot Across the Bow?, the chords remind me of Pachelbel?s Canon. Was this a conscious reference? Oh, not conscious ? that?s a subliminal thing. I?m proud of you, man, you caught that. That?s good. I?ve always loved that piece. To me, Bach, Pachelbel, Albinoni, Vivaldi ? they?re inside my brain and my soul. When I do something that is spontaneous and improvised, it will still be hugely influenced by all that. For example, the title track ?Relentless? ? it?s a very Paganini-ish theme. There?s a center section that?s totally Bach. It ain?t Bach, but you know what I?m saying? It?s natural for me. Since I started, it?s been absorbed into me. It?s inside me already. I don?t think about it. It?s already there...

2010-11-14 23:04:00
Sleaze Roxx: You mentioned that you are receptive to feedback and one of your biggest critics is your wife. Was it open for Tim to give feedback during the recording of the album? Yngwie Malmsteen: Coming in they know how I work so they don't do that. They don't give any suggestions. I know that it sounds strict, but it's not. The musicians I work with know that their role is to come in and deliver the best possible performance. I see it like Robert De Niro playing a role -- it's his task to bring that character to life. I know that in rock and roll that's not the traditional way of making records. I don't have a guitar riff and have the drummer play along and then bring in the singer to come up with his part over it. I just don't work that way at all. I have to add that with Tim he has the voice that I have been looking for. I don't have to push him hard because he gets it and knows what I'm looking for and it works brilliantly. more

Let me tell you, I have made a lot of mistakes (laughs). I got ripped off blind for years, but I learned my lesson. So, I know exactly what?s going on. Every time you do something, there has to be a lesson. If you make the same mistake more than once, then it?s bad more.
